THE Patriotic Front (PF) Copperbelt Provincial Chairperson Stardy Mwale has suggested that United Party For National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema and Alliance for Better Zambia (ABZ) president Fr Frank Bwalya could have been attacked by MMD members on the copperbelt.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Mr Mwale said the opposition should not always accuse and put blame on the ruling party whenever they are harassed when they come in the province.

“These people also have their own enemies, in fact UPND have mentioned themselves that their number one enemy was MMD, so what if it’s the MMD that harassed him, how does the number three enemy come in,” he said

He said there was need for opposition leaders to stop putting blame on Government but instead concentrate on explaining to the Zambia people what they will do when they come in power.

On Friday, the PF in Lusaka and Copperbelt Provinces dismissed claims by UPND president Hakainde Hichilema that he was attacked by PF cadres while featuring on a radio station in Ndola.

Mr. Clement Katongo said that their investigations carried out by the party had revealed that claims by the opposition party leader were not true.

Mr Katongo said findings by the party are that Mr Hichilema was attacked by ordinary citizens who were not happy with his attacks on President Michael Sata.

He said the PF on the Copperbelt was not even aware of Mr. Hichilema’s presence in Ndola because he was not a factor on the Copperbelt.

Mr. Katongo , who is also Lusaka Province Information and Publicity Secretary, said PF was the most peaceful party in Zambia.
He added that insults and defamatory stories on the president through on-line media was the worst form of violence.

Zambians from different walks of life raise placards with messages to demand for the release of the draft Zambian constitution

A Constitution indaba comprising opposition parties and the Government seeking consensus on the Constitution making process is set for April 30.

Boniface Chembe the Executive Director for Southern Africa Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes-SACCORD, an organisation organizing the indaba has told ZNBC News by telephone that the Indaba will provide a platform for questions and responses in sticky issues regarding the Constitution making process.

Opposition parties have already written to government seeking a meeting, which they say should be chaired by President Michael Sata, to iron out issues regarding the process.

Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba has already welcomed the idea to hold the Indaba.

Mr Chembe says the meeting is expected to bring all stakeholders together and is expected to put them at the same level on where the process is coming from and where it is.

He said the meeting is also expected to discuss the way forward.

Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) has challenged the Zambia police to move in and arrest the Patriotic Front cadres that are threatening to harm fellow citizens.

FODEP Executive Director Macdonald Chipenzi has told Qfm news in an interview that police should not entertain anyone breaking the law regardless of their political affiliation.

Mr. Chipenzi observes that they are citizens who are proposing and committing violence in full view of the police but they are not brought before the law.

On Friday the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) in Lusaka and the Copperbelt Provinces vowed to protect the President and party leadership using whatever means necessary.

Lusaka Province Chairperson Geoffrey Chumbwe said the ruling party is being forced to act violently against opposition leaders due to continued insults against Republican President and the party leadership.

Chumbwe said youths in the party will not fold their arms while the opposition continues to insult the President.

And United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema has expressed disappointment at Zambia police officers who are custodian of maintaining law and order by their actions of running away from PF cadres armed with machetes threatening innocent people’s lives.

Mr. Hichilema says the Ministry of Home Affairs has allowed the situation where the law enforcement is executed only to protect the PF members.

The opposition leader adds that PF cadres are terrorizing people on their legally acquired land but the Home Affairs Minister is mute.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.”

(1 Corinthians 15:3–4, NIV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria

As we celebrate the resurrection of Christ this Easter season, I think about when they crucified Jesus. On that Friday, it was the darkest, most painful, discouraging day of His life. In fact, it was so bad that He sweat drops of blood earlier.

It looked as if His enemies had gotten the best of Him. But, God had other plans. They put Him in the grave on Friday, celebrating their victory, but Sunday morning was a different story. The grave could not hold Him. Death couldn’t contain Him!

The forces of darkness couldn’t stop Him! On the third day, He came out of the grave and said, “I was dead, but now I am alive forevermore!”

One principle that the resurrection teaches us is that God will always finish what He started. No matter how dark it looks, no matter how long it’s been, no matter how many people are trying to push you down, if you will stay in faith, God will always take you from Friday to Sunday. He will always complete what He started in you!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY

Father God, thank You for completing what You started in my life. I trust that no matter how dark things may seem, You are my shining light of hope. I thank You for working behind the scenes to carry me through to the place of victory in every area of my life in Jesus’ name! Amen.

Festus scores again for Arrows

3

Festus Mbewe on Saturday helped inspire troubled Golden Arrows to a 4-1 away win over Platinum Stars.

Mbewe scored Arrows’ second goal in the 45th minute to help them to 2-1 halftime lead before he was substituted in the 70th minute.

The Zambia striker has now scored two goals in nine games since joining Arrows in January on a six month loan deal from Nkana.

Meanwhile, compatriot Christopher Katongo started the match but was not on target before he was substituted in the 87th minute Defender Joseph Musonda was on the bench.

Arrows remain bottom of the table despite the win with 18 points six points behind Free State Stars with three matches left to play.

Government says it is closing-in on people who abuse the online publications to defame others in the name of freedom of speech.

Communication Minister, Yamfwa Mukanga says his ministry is working with security wings, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Zambia Information Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) to curb the vice.

Mr. Mukanga told ZNBC NEWS in interview that efforts are also being made to engage countries hosting people behind some of the online publications in the habit of defaming people.

Mr. Mukanga has also advised members of the public against taking advantage of democracy to defame others.

PF Lusaka Province Youth chairman, Kennedy Kamba on Friday challenged ZICTA and the police to trace and prosecute people in the habit of insulting President Michael Sata on some online publications.

Mr Kamba threatened to close down Zambia Information Communication Technology Authority offices for allegedly failing to locate people behind the online news sites that are anti-PF.

Mr. Kamba accused ZICTA management of failing to trace people who are behind the Watchdog, an online media publication.

Mr. Kamba said that ZICTA should be in a position to know the individuals publishing negative statements against the party and President Michael Sata.

And Lusaka province Information Publicity Secretary Clement Katongo said the party resolved to trace all individuals posting what he termed as malicious things, insults and defamatory comments on social and other media against the president.

“You may wish to know that for as long as someone is using their mobile phone registered in Zambia or laptop connected to any internet provider in the country, they will not run away or hide from their crimes,” Mr. Katonga warned.

He said the party has instructed members and supporters across the country to report anyone suspected to be posting malicious or insulting comments on the president.

Mr Katongo further explained that the party will report all culprits to the law enforcers but will not hesitate to deal with them if the law fails.

Mr. Katongo also urged law enforcement officers to deal with the people insulting the head of state through the media.

“If the law enforcers fail to deal with such internet criminals, we shall have no choice but to deal with them ourselves. Our party functionaries countrywide are on red alert on how to trace and deal with such criminals,” he said.

Nkana fail to impress again

4

Nkana’s interest in the 2014 CAF Confederation Cup is looking very bleak after drawing blank against visiting CA Bizertin at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe today.

Masauso Mwale’s side has now extended its goal drought to six straight competitive games in a period they have picked up five draws and a defeat.

The game was as sparkless as Nkana’s all-round form since March 8 when they last picked up a competitive win and in the first half against the Tunisians only had one good chance on goal.

Shadreck Musonda amazingly blasted his point blank shot over the bar in the 23rd minute with only Bizertin goalkeeper Ben Farouk to beat.

Musonda was about the only outstanding player in Nkana’s lineup and in the 54 minute forced the best out of Farouk again.

The second half was a slightly better especially after midfielder Kelvin Mubanga replaced underperforming and off-form captain Sydney Kalume in the 58th minute.

Mubanga was denied a dream start in the 62st minute by Farouk when the Bizertin goalkeeper saved his long range shot.

Musonda again tested Farouk in the 71st minute but the goalkeeper was again on hand to deny the attacking midfielder.

Nkana now need a miracle next Sunday in Bizerte to pull off a shock result and qualify to the Confederation Cup group stage that kicks off on May 16.

Church challenges leaders in the country to declare zero-tolerance to bloodshed, hatred, mistrust and division

THE Church has challenged leaders in the country to declare zero-tolerance to bloodshed, hatred, mistrust and division.

Saint Ignatius Catholic Church Parish priest Charles Chilinda said leaders should embrace and love one another and preach peace, harmony and reconciliation.

Father Chilinda said this at the parish yesterday during the commemoration of the Passion of the Christ Service also known as Good Friday.

It is a procession to mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

In attendance at the service were President Sata, former presidents Kenneth Kaunda and Rupiah Banda, opposition political party leaders Nevers Mumba, Edith Nawakwi and Mike Mulongoti. UPND president Hakainde Hichilema sent his apologies.

Others were cabinet and deputy ministers, members of Parliament, diplomats and senior government officials.

Father Chilinda said he was pleased that President Sata and opposition leaders responded favourably to his invitation to celebrate the mass.

“It is a great day for us, as people who have gathered here today rarely do so. When I spoke to President Sata, he gladly accepted the invitation to join other leaders at this service.

“Who would have ever thought Mr Sata would sit next to Mr Banda? And who would have ever thought RB [Mr Banda] would sit next to Wynter Kabimba [Minister of Justice]?” he asked.

The clergyman said it is not the will of God that Zambians should be divided but rather remain united.

“There is too much violence in our country. Political cadres are fighting each other everyday. These are some of the vices that are part of the wound of Christ,” he said.

Father Chilinda said leaders and Zambians as a whole should love one another regardless of their status in society.

“Today you might be a politician and tomorrow you will be an ordinary citizen. God is the ultimate boss,” Father Chilinda said.

He said the coming together of President Sata and other leaders should mark a new chapter in the history of the country.

“I hope today marks a new beginning for all of our leaders here with us. I hope this is not just a PR [public relations] or show-off by our politicians. Let us engage so that Zambia can once again be known as a beacon of peace, hope and love,” he said.

And giving a sermon, assistant parish priest John Mwelwa said Zambians should unite and thank God for the country’s Golden Jubilee independence celebration.

“50 years is not a joke. Let us love and forgive each other. Let us start afresh as a nation to make this country a better place.

“Let us remain united and celebrate in peace as this gesture will be a great present to our founding father Kaunda, who is celebrating his 90th birthday,” he said.

After the service, President Sata escorted Dr Kaunda to his vehicle and had a brief chat with Mr Banda before leaving the parish.

MMD National Youth Secretary Tobias Kafumukache addresses journalists at the party secretariat in Lusaka

MMD National Youth Secretary Tobias Kafumukanche has called on Inspector General of Police Stella Libongani block the planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of opposition party.

Mr. Kafumukache says if the NEC meeting is given a go ahead there might be chaos as there is a petition process yet to be concluded.

He said it would not be conducive to hold the NEC meeting before the petition process of the removal of party president Dr. Never Mumba from office and holding of a national convention is concluded.

He said it was the Secretariat ‘s role to call for the NEC meeting after a consensus from all stakeholders and not the office of the party’s president.

Mr. Kafumukache said this during a press briefing at the Party secretariat in Lusaka today.

And a visibly annoyed Lusaka Province Chairman Watson Mtonga who stormed the secretariat after receiving a report that Kafumukache was holding a Press Briefing said it was not right for party officials to rush to the media when they have differences within the party.

Mr. Mutonga said party officials should learn to resolve issues within the party than insulting each other in the media

Now PF youths threaten to close down ZICTA offices for failing to track people behind online news

Ruling PF youths in Lusaka have threatened to close down Zambia Information Communication Technology Authority offices for allegedly failing to locate people behind the online news sites that are anti-PF.

PF Lusaka Province Youth Chairperson Kennedy Kamba has accused ZICTA management of failing to trace people who are behind the Watchdog, an online media publication.

Mr. Kamba told a media briefing in Lusaka yesterday that ZICTA should be in a position to know the individuals publishing negative statements against the party and President Michael Sata.

He has since appealed to ZICTA to work hard and ensure that people behind the online malicious publications are exposed and should face the law.

And the PF on the Copperbelt has confirmed that its cadres attacked UPND President Hakainde Hichilema in Ndola last weekend.

Speaking at a joint media briefing with the Lusaka Province leadership in Lusaka, PF Copperbelt Province Chairperson Stad Mwale said that the PF is a peaceful party but is provoked with anyone who uses bad language against President Michael Sata.

Mr. Mwale who is also a member of the PF Central Committee said all opposition leaders visiting the Copperbelt should first get permission from the party failure to which their tours will not be successful.

And Lusaka Province PF Chairperson Geoffrey Chumbwe warned that anyone who will insult or use vulgar language against Mr. Sata will be the party’s number one enemy.

Mr. Chumbwe dismissed claims by FDD leader Edith Nawakwi that the PF administration has recruited 6,000 cadres into the Police Service.

Mr. Chumbwe said Ms. Nawakwi lied to the nation and that her statement has the potential to cause fear among citizens.

Shinde Stadium to be re-opened in May

6

Mighty Mufulira Wanderers have announced that the renovated Shinde Stadium will be re-opened in the first week of May.

Mopani Copper Mines have rehabilitated the stadium at a cost of about K500, 000.

Club vice-chairman Philip Zyambo said Shinde Stadium will be ready for use in two weeks.

“Shinde Stadium will be ready at the end of this month. In the first week of May we will go back to our home ground,” Zyambo said.

Last month, Mighty prematurely used Shinde Stadium for their FAZ Division One North opener against Kitwe United which they won 2-1.

But after realising that the stadium was not yet ready Mighty requested FAZ to reverse their home matches until Shinde was fit.

“When we played Kitwe the stadium was not ready. The dressing rooms were not yet renovated, so we requested FAZ to allow us play home matches away,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mighty have begun this year’s season on a good note after picking seven points from four matches.
So far the club has two wins, a draw and a loss.

Nkana seek redemption in Confed Cup

1

Nkana on Saturday begin their quest for a place in the group stage of the 2014 CAF Confederation Cup when they host Tunisia’s Club Bizertin at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.

The two teams clash in this pre-group stage first leg tie in Wusakile hoping to enhance their chances of advancing in the Confederation Cup.

Nkana and Bizertin have never met in any competition.

Masauso Mwale’s team on Saturday enter Nkana Stadium with a five-game winless streak that has seen the team fail to score.

But Mwale has remained confident that Nkana will record a positive result against Bizertin.

“We are ready for the match and I know goals will come,” he said.

Bizertin coach Nabil Kouki said:”We are all ready. You know when we play every time we play to win.”

Nkana are in the Confederation Cup pre-group stage playoffs after being relegated from the Champions League following a 5-0 aggregate loss to Egypt’s Zamalek last month.

Sixteen opposition political party leaders have written a letter to President Sata requesting for a meeting over the constitution making process.

The opposition Presidents want to discuss the release of the final draft constitution to all stakeholders and the road map leading to the adoption of the constitution.

The opposition leaders have also proposed that President Sata chairs the meeting.

This is according to an open letter released in Lusaka today.

The 16 opposition leaders include Alliance for Better Zambia President Father Frank Bwalya, UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema and MMD’s Nevers Mumba.

Others are New Generation Party President Humphrey Siulapwa and Heritage Party President Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda.

Zambia in tobacco bumper harvest

7
Minister Wylbur Simuusa
Minister Wylbur Simuusa (R)

Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Wylbur Simuusa has disclosed that Zambia expects to harvest tobacco worth more than K750 million in the 2014 season.

Mr Simuusa said this when he officially opened the 2014 National Tobacco Marketing season in Chipata and mandated the Tobacco Board of Zambia (TBZ) to run the floors in Eastern province.

The Minister expressed happiness at the harvest projections of 45 million Kg of burley, virginia and fire tobacco valued at more than K750 million compared to 41.4 million kilograms of tobacco valued at about K711.3 million which was produced in 2013.

“This is a great achievement for the country and it is in line with government policy of making agriculture the mainstay of our economy as tobacco production and processing are showing clear and progressive foot prints in the creation of employment and generation of foreign exchange,” he said.

He stated that farmers and stakeholders in Eastern province should come up with a sound association to run the tobacco floor in 2015 as the province has a capacity to have a formidable Association to run the tobacco floors.

Mr Simuusa said other provinces have associations to run the floors in place saying he has no doubt that Eastern Province can manage the floors just like other provinces.
Mr Simuusa said that the country has suitable climatic conditions, arable land and water resource and available labour force and market that can make Zambia produce more tobacco and other cash crops in the region.

He however, challenged the industry to double their efforts and increase tobacco production from the range of 40 million kg to more than 100 million kg in the next five years.

Mr Simuusa said there is also need for the industry to replenish the environment through tree planting and implementing good agricultural practices .

And speaking at the same function TBZ Board Chairperson Reuben Mahombe said tobacco is a major source of income for small scale farmers in Eastern province and the country at large.

Mr Mahombe said TBZ has since 2011 been running floors in Eastern Province due to lack of a formidable association to manage the floors.

He also said plans are also under way for TBZ to construct a processing plant in Chipata to add value to tobacco and create employment for the people in the region.
