Kambwili accuse Zambia Police of storming his residence despite assurance that he will be available for interviews on Monday

Opposition Patriotic Front (PF) presidential candidate Chishimba Kambwili has accused the Zambia Police of storming his residence in Woodlands despite his lawyers informing them that he will be available for interviews on Monday 6th February, 2023. In a post on his Facebook page, Hon. Kambwili claimed that police officers from Service Headquarters arrived at his home on Friday, 4th February, 2023, despite his lawyers from Ferd Jere & Company informing the police that he will be available for the interviews on Monday.

Hon. Kambwili alleged that President Hakainde Hichilema had instructed the police to arrest him for hate speech. On Tuesday, Kambwili took to Facebook to claim that he has intelligence information that the police were instructed by the President to arrest him as hate speech is considered a serious crime. “They have been instructed by the President because he threatened me. He told me this is an offense but I never committed any offense, suffice to say this is not the first time that the President is threatening me,” Kambwili said.

“You sent me a message to say ‘you are going to find yourself in hot soup’ and ‘you will fail to come out of these problems’. Now how do we have a President who threatens citizens and when we say police are instructed from State House, people think it is a joke. What have I done to you Mr. President for you to send police officers? All the records are there. Even the police officers were being unprofessional. I know what instructions they have been given because I did find out from the system. They said ‘the instruction we have been given is to lock you up like [Chilufya] Tayali, not to give you bond and not to take you to court in time for like 10 days.’ Mr. President let me tell you I am used to this.”

Kambwili stated that he did not fear arrest. “I was arrested 16 times and every time I was arrested, I was detained not less than five days. And by the way, I have been to jail. I was in jail for 18 days on political intimidation and political persecution. I am used and for you who brought the call out, bring it tomorrow [yesterday] I will report myself. I will not be intimidated in my own country,” he said. “I will not be scared. Bring the call out or phone me, tell me where I am required because we didn’t collect the call out. So we don’t know what is there but I was told police brought a call out that I should report myself to Force Headquarters.”

Kambwili also stated that President Hichilema seems to have forgotten what they went through together while in opposition. “…even sending them messages saying ‘this is a serious offense’. Don’t try to threaten me. Nalikosa mukati na kunse (I’m strong inside out). Nalishimpula mfwayafye ukwakusha umutwe. Icibemba citili wapapa kalama (I’m on a mission and ready to take any risk. In Bemba we say you are stuck with something),” he warned. “I challenge you we will meet in court and we will see whether I have committed an offense of tribalism.”

Kambwili also announced that he will sue SMEs Minister Elias Mubanga for labelling him a tribalist. “I want to warn Mubanga, Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises, today [Tuesday] I was watching you when you had the Bemba people explaining about tribalism.

Government making strides in controlling cancer

1

The government says it is making significant strides in advancing cancer control.

Mungwi District Commissioner, Muma Musonda noted that reducing the burden of cancer in the country is cardinal in the attainment of universal health coverage.

He says this is in line with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number three which emphasizes on good health and wellbeing for all.

Mr Musonda said this when he officiated at the World Cancer Day commemorations held at Nseluka clinic in Mungwi District yesterday.

He has since urged parents and guardians with girls between the ages of 9 and 14 years to get the full dose of the Human Pupiloma Virus (HPV) vaccine to prevent cervical cancer.

” I also call for girls and women to screen for cancer and go for early diagnosis when you have symptoms suggesting cancer,” Mr Musonda said.

He added “I further urge you to create social support networks to talk about cancer as a strategy to cope with social and emotional impact of cancer.”

Speaking earlier, Northern Province Health Director, Ernest Mutale called on men and women to get involved in conquering the disease saying cancer kills but can be prevented.

Dr Mutale also urged the people of Mungwi to take advantage of the cancer services being provided in different health facilities in the area.

And two cervical cancer survivors, Jacqueline Muma and Elizabeth Munthali shared their experiences of how they were diagnosed with the disease.

The commemoration which was characterized with drama and dance was celebrated under the theme, ‘ Closing care gap- everyone deserves to access cancer care’.

In attendance were Sub-Chief Mutale Mukulu with his village head persons and some senior health personnel from both Kasama and Mungwi districts.

Mungwi is one of the districts in Northern Province with a low uptake of cancer screening and prevention services as testing equipment is yet to be fixed in most of its health facilities.

Opposition Leader Urges Government to Prevent Cholera Outbreak from Reaching National Epidemic

3

Brian Mundubile, the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and Presidential Candidate for the Patriotic Front, called on the government to take decisive action to prevent the cholera outbreak in Vubwi from becoming a national epidemic. The Vubwi District in Eastern Province recorded three new cases of cholera on Saturday, bringing the total number to 31.

Mundubile expressed disappointment in the failure of the New Dawn Administration to deal with the looming cholera outbreak, which the PF Government had successfully controlled for several years. He praised Vice President Mutale Nalumango for launching a cleaning exercise, but emphasized that a lasting solution to waste management was necessary.

The leader of the opposition urged councils to take responsibility for daily street cleaning and to acquire the necessary equipment for waste management. He expressed concern over the critical shortage of drugs, which could lead to disastrous consequences in the event of a cholera outbreak in other parts of the country. Mundubile emphasized that preventing a possible cholera outbreak was more important than curing it, and that the government should take necessary preventive measures to ensure the safety of Zambian citizens.

Hon Mundubile called on the government to take immediate action to address the issue of waste management and prevent the spread of cholera. He stressed the importance of preventive measures and the need for councils to acquire necessary equipment to maintain clean streets and prevent the outbreak from becoming a national epidemic.

Government Accused of Neglecting Mopani and Konkola Copper Mines for Profit

2

The future of Mopani Copper Mines and Konkola Copper Mines has been a topic of much debate in recent days, with different opinions emerging from different quarters.

Patriotic Front Presidential Candidate, Amb. Emmanuel Mwamba, has accused the government of neglecting the mines in order to degrade their assets and create social and economic desperation on the Copperbelt, so that the mines could be given away to investors for a song. In an interview with Prime Television’s “Matters Arising,” Mwamba stated, “Government has been quick to find millions of dollars to clear outstanding debts, such as owed to Maamba Collieries, Copperbelt Energy Company and Mozambique, but demonstrates reluctance to promote production at the two mines. This is a clear ploy to degrade the mine assets and create social and economic desperation for the people on the Copperbelt.”

Mwamba urged the government to find resources to meet copper production targets and take advantage of high copper prices currently prevailing. He called on President Hakainde Hichilema to resolve the crisis and said, “The mines are wholly owned by government and it is easier to make decisions around investment and securing an equity partner. The government must find resources to meet copper production targets and take advantage of high copper prices currently prevailing.”

On the other hand, Advocates for National Development And Democracy Executive Director Samuel Banda and Zambians for Peace, Unity and Development President Ronnie Jere have called for the government to hand over KCM to Vedanta Resources as the legal owners. Banda, who is on the Copperbelt together with his Zambians for Peace Unity and Development counterpart Ronnie Jere, stated, “KCM and Mopani are strategic assets and sources of employment and business opportunities. We appeal to the people of Copperbelt to give Vedanta a chance to operate KCM so that they can restore the much-needed employment and business opportunities.”

Jere added, “It is disheartening to see how people on the Copperbelt are suffering and going without meals due to increased poverty levels. We reiterate our earlier calls that a decision to hand back KCM to Vedanta be made as soon as possible to restore the mining glory on the Copperbelt.”

In response to these calls, Mwamba rejected assertions that Vedanta Mineral Resources should be allowed back to own KCM. He stated, “Records show that Vedanta was a bad investor who wilfully declared fake losses, failed to pay taxes, polluted rivers and degraded the mine assets. Vedanta failed to develop Konkola Deep Mine, which has known copper reserves worth over $200 billion, but chose to make quick profits by importing concentrates from the Democratic Republic Congo.”

Mwamba called on President Hichilema to make decisions that would benefit the country beyond his presidential terms and said, “ZCCM-IH must hold equity in all large-scale mines, including Lumwana and Kalumbila, for the country to have meaningful benefit from its mineral resources. The government must make decisions that will benefit the country beyond the president’s terms in office.”

The future of KCM and Mopani remains uncertain, with different opinions emerging from different quarters. Regardless of the outcome, the people of Copperbelt hope that the situation will be resolved soon to restore the mining glory in the region and bring back employment and business opportunities. Mwamba, Banda, and Jere all agree that the government must make a decision that will benefit the country in the long-term. The people of Copperbelt hope that the situation will be resolved soon and that the mines will return to commercial production, bringing back employment and business opportunities to the region.

President Hichilema Assures Citizens of Effective Measures to Improve Mealie Meal Situation in Zambia”

5

President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia has assured citizens that the New Dawn government has put in place effective measures to address the issues surrounding mealie meal, a staple food in the country. During a church service interaction at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, President Hichilema took the time to address the concerns of citizens and assure them that his administration is committed to improving the situation.

“Our assurance to everyone is that we have put measures in place to ameliorate the issue of mealie meal. We encourage you to continue investing in your restaurants and work hard as that is the only way to maintain your source of income,” President Hichilema said. He also expressed happiness about the appreciation of free education delivered by the UPND government and called on citizens to take advantage of market booster loans being offered by CEEC and expand their businesses.

“We are aware of the challenges faced by small businesses, especially in light of the current economic climate. That’s why we are committed to providing the necessary support to help our citizens grow their businesses and create more jobs for our people,” President Hichilema added.

However, not everyone is convinced that the government’s measures will be enough to address the rising prices of mealie meal. The National Association for Smallholder Farmers has expressed frustration with the government’s failure to find a lasting solution to the problem. Association Executive Director Dr. Frank Kayula said: “Stakeholders expect both the government and experts to understand that mealie meal prices can only be stabilized through sustainable long-term measures, not short-term solutions.”

Dr. Kayula criticized the government’s approach to the issue, saying: “The intermittent injection of cheap maize from the Food Reserve Agency to millers is an unsustainable short-term solution that will continue to disadvantage consumers and create constant headaches for the leadership.” He added that the root cause of the high mealie meal prices lies in the expensive maize and chemical fertilizers that contribute to the high cost of production.

“The cost of production for mealie meal is exacerbated by expensive chemical fertilizers which gobble more than 65% of the total costs of maize production, thereby causing high prices for the commodity on the market. The government must address this problem at its core,” Dr. Kayula said.

Despite the concerns expressed by the National Association for Smallholder Farmers, President Hichilema remains optimistic about the future of the economy. “I remain confident that the economic recovery plan put in place will drive the country towards prosperity. My administration remains determined to do whatever it takes to ensure a stable economy,” he said.

Will Edgar Lungu Pull a Quick One?

24

By Prince Bill M. Kaping’a Political/Social Analyst

When you hear someone like Charity Banda, the deposed Lusaka province Chairlady, say there’re machinations to dribble certain PF presidential aspirants out of the race and impose former president Edgar Lungu as a torch bearer in the 2026 elections; take time to analyze the developments in the former ruling party before you dismiss her assumptions. It’s increasingly becoming clear by the day that there are actually outrageous Machiavellian maneuvers to facilitate the possible return of ba Lungu to the throne.

If at all there’s one individual with ultra-presidential ambitions in PF, it is no other than the PF acting party president himself, bo Given Lubinda, AKA Zayelo! This is something that he has never attempted to shy away from like many other cowards in our political dispensation. If you may recall, he was actually one of the contenders in quest to replace Michael Sata at the Mulungushi Rock of Authority. At the end of the day, Edgar Lungu claimed the crown by a mere show of hands with bo Lubinda going on to serve as Justice Minister, even though he had never been to any law school himself, and he would put his charm and charisma to greater use defending the notorious Bill 10! Doesn’t it therefore bother you that of all the people, bo Lubinda’s name is missing from the list of candidates positioning themselves for an eventual showdown with HH in 2026?

The author has endeavoured to critically analyze the unfolding events in the former ruling party and safely arrived at this theory. Brian Mundubile, the PF Legal Affairs Chairman, who also doubles as leader of the opposition in parliament, appears to be the favourite to take over the mantle as party president. And he seemingly enjoys tacit approval from both the acting party president bo Lubinda and of course, the former president Edgar Lungu. However, Mundubile is a stranger in PF. His roots are firmly anchored in MMD just like the other two candidates Dr. Chitalu Chilufya and Emmanuel Mwamba.

Given this background, Mundubile cannot easily marshal the support of the grassroots, hardcore adherents that easily connect with the likes of Miles Sampa, Chishimba Kambwili or GBM whom they view as the true owners of the party. This may even be the reason why the party is dillydallying to go for the convention as the top brass probably understands that his of defeating the trio are as impossible as it is for the Camel to pass through the eye of a needle.

In one way or another, Mundubile will be imposed as party president with Given Lubinda relegating to his substantive position as vice president. And we get closer to 2026, there will be a clarion call from within the party for Edgar Chagwa Lungu to step out of retirement and challenge Hichilema. As a matter of fact, some impatient party members have already started chanting they want Lungu back! And being a cunning and sly politician that he is, he will of course insist that he should be left out of politics as he’s enjoying his retirement. And when the time is ripe, he will then pull a quick one!

But where does this leave bo Lubinda whom we earlier said would be eager to move into Plot 1 Independence Avenue should chances allow? You must be a dimwit to believe that bo Lubinda can just wake up one day and forego his presidential ambitions just like that! Ba Lungu has probably assured bo Lubinda that he will just come back to finish off his final term and then pass on the button to bo Lubinda with Mundubile assuming the role as vice president. Who would reject such an offer from a man who has all the resources to his name?

Don’t argue with us, we’ve seen such things happening in Russia……

Government embarks on data collection for Freedom Fighters who fought for Zambia’s Independence

14

The government has embarked on data collection for Freedom Fighters who fought for the country’s Independence.

This came to light when Permanent Secretary Special Duties, Wisdom Bwalya paid a courtesy call on Mpika District Commissioner, David Siame yesterday.

Mr Bwalya said there is need to bring freedom fighters together and create a genuine data base for all those who fought for the country’s independence.

“I have been in some districts where there are many groups claiming to be freedom fighters, but their age does not correspond to people who are truly freedom fighters, hence making it difficult for Government to help the freedom fighters,” said Mr Bwalya.

He added that his meetings with District Commissioners has been necessitated so that a register for the actual freedom fighters can be created and put in the national database.

Mr Bwalya said this will make it easy for Government to help them when need arises.

“Government is committed to ensuring that the lives and welfare of our freedom fighters are safeguarded hence this undertaking,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mpika District Freedom Fighters Chairperson, Raphael Bwali has commended Government for the move to formalise the database for all Freedom Fighters in the country.

Mr Bwali said that Freedom Fighters have gone through numerous challenges as most of them are ageing and need Government support.

” It is saddening to hear reports of people who did not participate in the struggle for freedom claiming to be freedom fighters, a situation l strongly condemn,” said Mr Bwali.

And Mpika District Commissioner, David Siame said that Government is concerned about the welfare of the freedom fighters and would like to reduce the challenges faced by them.

Mr Siame said that his office will ensure that the deserving freedom fighters are mobilised.

“I will work with them to ensure that they mobilise themselves to fit into the Government program,” He said.

Government committed to working with chiefs – Masebo

1

Minister of Heath Sylvia Masebo says traditional leaders remain an integral part of the government system through which it reaches out to the people.

When she paid a courtesy call on chief Mnukwa of the Ngoni people upon arrival in Chipata district, the Minister said that the government was ready to work closely with traditional leaders because they are the cornerstone of national development.

The Minister also said the government is willing to work with everybody in order to foster development.

She explained that the new administration will unite the country by taking development to every part of the country without favoritism.

And chief Mnukwa pledged to work with the government under the leadership of President Hichilema in order to foster development.

The traditional leader said chiefs have the mandate to work with the day’s government to foster unity and national development.

The traditional leader said meaningful development can be attained if chiefs work with the government of the day

He has however urged people to support President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision for Zambia.

Ethiopians apprehended in Isoka – Immigration Dept

6

The immigration department has apprehended 10 Ethiopian nationals for illegally staying in the country without proper documentation.

Immigration Department Public Relations Manager, Martin Nshinka said the Immigration Office in Isoka apprehended the 10 Ethiopian nationals during the immigration – led operation conducted with the support of police held in the early hours of Saturday February 4,2023.

Mr Nshinka said the operation was carried out following information received from a concerned member of the public that a Toyota Hiace Registration Number AID 6897 which was carrying Ethiopians was being pursued by unknown persons in a Prado Registration Number ABJ 3055.

“With the help of the public, armed police and Immigration officers began following the two vehicles and found the Prado which had lost control and careered off the road in Ndingindi Village between Nakonde and Isoka District at around 02:00 hours and besides the vehicle were three Ethiopians,” Mr Nshinka said.

He added that the Officers later found an empty Toyota Hiace parked at a house and began searching the nearby bushes where they found nine more Ethiopians bringing the total to 12.

Mr Nshinka stated that amongst the 12 Ethiopians, six sustained injuries and are currently admitted to Isoka District Hospital while the remaining six have been detained at Isoka Police Station and a motorcycle registration number MC 473 CSA was also discovered at the scene.

Mr Nshinka said both drivers of the vehicles managed to escape, and it is believed that there could be more Ethiopians still unaccounted for and the search for the escapees is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Department of immigration as part of the ongoing crack-down on human trafficking and smuggling of migrants, the Department on February 3, 2023, apprehended one Zambian and a Zimbabwean suspected to be involved in human trafficking.

Mr Nshinka said the duo was nabbed at Oasis Truck Park in Chirundu by Officers based in Lusaka following a tip-off and are currently detained in police custody pending prosecution.

And in another development, the Department of Immigration has also secured the conviction of a 29-year-old Zambian for the offence of aiding and abetting illegal immigrants contrary to Section 46(a) (v) as read with Section 56(1) of the Immigration and Deportation Act No.18 of 2010 of the Laws of Zambia.

“Facts are that Emmanuel Mbewe, a Resident of Kaunda Square Stage Two was arrested on July 9,2022 after his relatives brought him to the immigration headquarters with the instructions of the Department. He was charged with aiding and abetting a Malawian Couple that was in the country illegally when he took them to his Aunt’s House in Lusaka’s Chudleigh Area,” he said.

Mr Nshinka noted that Immigration Officers nabbed the Malawian Couple at the Chudleigh House on July 8, 2022, for unlawful stay, following a tip-off from members of the public. During the Officers’ visit, Mbewe was not present.

He stated that his case was concluded on 1st February 2023 when the Magistrate Court in Lusaka convicted and sentenced him to pay a fine of K 60,000 or in default 2-years imprisonment with hard labour and has since paid the court fine and has since been released from detention.

Further, the Kabwe Regional Immigration Office on February 1, 2023, effected nine deportations and 48 removals.

“The exercise was aimed at decongesting the Correctional Facilities. Those deported were nine Burundians and three Tanzanians who completed serving prison sentences for the offence of unlawful presence in the country. Those removed after paying court fines for unlawful presence were 27 Burundians, 12 Tanzanians, six Somalis, two Ugandans, and one Rwandese,” Mr Nshinka added.

He encouraged members of the public to continue reporting suspected cases of illegal migration, human trafficking and smuggling of migrants to the nearest Immigration Office.

Mr Nshinka Further, said that the conviction of the 29-year-old Zambian should serve as a timely warning to Zambian citizens and residents who are in the habit of aiding, abetting, and harbouring illegal immigrants.

He stated that the maximum penalty for these offences is a fine of up to hundred and fifty thousand (K 150,000) or 5 years imprisonment or both.

Over 100 Chief palaces to be constructed this year – President Hichilema

18

President Hakainde Hichilema says government is targeting to build over 100 Chief’s palaces for the year 2023 as well as complete the palaces that are still under construction.

President Hichilema says the government is committed to institutionalize the Chieftaincy and restore decency for traditional leaders through construction of suitable offices and residential areas for chiefs.

“This year we have targeted to construct over 100 palaces and complete the ones that have been under construction since the year 2014. We want to institutionalize the palace with proper water articulation, some form of lighting using solar energy or other forms, build offices and meeting rooms. This time we are doing things differently” he said

Speaking when Senior Chief Kambombo of Chama District paid a courtesy call on him yesterday afternoon, the President said government is in the year 2023 focusing on addressing community concerns including infrastructure development and other emerging issues that need attention.

He emphasized that government will ensure that all road constructions are done at the right price, right quality and within the set framework and added that government will give construction to the local contractors.

The Head of State added that the increased Constituency Development Fund(CDF) is meant to improve the livelihoods of the people and has directed that the chief be represented on the committee to ensure that their views are heard

“The chief should have representation in the CDF committee so that the Chief’s views are well represented, the church will be represented too. We want the communities to prioritize their projects” he added

And Senior Chief Kambombo has thanked President Hichilema for moving Chama District back to the Eastern Province from Muchinga Province, stating that developmental projects that were disrupted as a result have since restarted

“We are grateful for the bold step you made of taking the district back to Eastern Province from Muchinga. We are even begining to see more development partners in the District,” he said

The Royal Highness who was speaking through his spokesperson Nixon Chilekwa appealed to the President to help the District with the rehabilitation of roads and bridges which he said are in a deplorable state.

He further requested for the president to facilitate purchase of an artificial limb and transportation to aid his movements since he had a surgical operation that left him with one led

“The Chief is having mobility issues as you can see his leg was amputated. We are asking that you can assist with an artificial limb to aid with the movements” he added

President Hakainde Hichilema has been engaging with traditional leaders with the last one being Chief Mpezeni last month.

Power Dynamos End 4-Game Winless Drought

0

Power Dynamos ended their four-match winless drought on Saturdays with a laboured 1-0 away win over Napsa Stars at Edwin Emboela Stadium in Lusaka.

The FAZ Super League leaders last tasted victory in their final game of 2022 on December 10 and returned from the Christmas break to gather four straight draws.

Fredrick Mulambia scored the easiest of goals in the 12th minute when the unmarked defender in a one-on-one situation beat Napsa goalkeeper Rodwell Mkwanya.

Mulambia benefitted from the hard work done for him by Power’s new signing Andy Boyeli who after a powerful run on the left released the ball for the defender.

But Mulambia could not continue due to an injury and was substituted in the 24th minute and was replaced by Godfrey Ngwenya.

Power extends their lead from three to point points on 42 points after the victory.

Forest stays second after salvaging a point away from fourth place Green Buffaloes in the second kickoff of the Emboela doubleheader.

Jack Chirwa fired in a free kick in the 18th minute to give Buffaloes a one-nil halftime lead.

Forest’s equalizer came in the 53nd minute when Quadri Kola converted a penalty after he was fouled in the area by Cephas Mulombwa.

Buffaloes later had the woodwork to thank when Mulombwa failed to beat goalkeeper Clement Kasongo.

Buffaloes, FC MUZA and Forest have 35, 36 and 38 points respectively in that top four bracket chasing Power.

Meanwhile, Nkana drew 1-1 away at fellow relegation strugglers Chambishi to post their second straight draw.

Eighth placed Zesco United’s game against Green Eagles will be continued on Sunday morning after it was suspended due to rain at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

Zesco takes an overnight 1-0 lead.

The Ndiyo Plate

3

By Mwizenge S. Tembo, Ph. D.Emeritus Professor of Sociology

One of the most significant aspects of the Zambian staple meal by which the nshima is ultimately identified with is what in English and among Zambians is called “relish”. Relish is an English somewhat poor equivalent or translation, which obviously, does not precisely reflect or capture what Zambians often realize is the very fundamental and transcending essence of the dish. The relish is a second dish that is always and without exception served with the nshima. It has many indigenous equivalent names. Among the Tumbuka of Eastern Zambia it is known as dende, among the Ngoni and Chewa of Malawi and Eastern Zambia it is known as ndiyo or ndiwo, and umunani among the Bemba speaking people of Northern Zambia and the Copperbelt Province.

The ndiwo second dish, which is always served with nshima, is often cooked from domestic and wild meats that include beef, goat, mutton, deer, buffalo, elephant, warthog, wild pig, mice, birds, rabbits or hare, antelope, turtle, alligator or crocodile, monkey, and chicken eggs. Green vegetables include domestic or garden grown like rape or repu, collard greens, cabbage, pumpkin or squash leaves (kwanya, chiwawa, mphangwe), sweet potato leaves (chimphorya), pea leaves (mtambe), cassava leaves (chigwada, katapa), bean leaves, kabata, nyazongwe, or bilizongwe leaves.

There are numerous wild green vegetables that include katambalala, chekwechekwe, katate, lumanda, and numerous others, which are all referred to by the very well-known generic name of delele or thelele among people of Eastern Zambia and Malawi. There are anywhere from 20 to 30 of this group of thelele vegetables. Other types of ndiwo or dende include fish, peanuts, peanut butter (chibwabwa or chimphonde), chipokoro, numerous types of wild mushrooms, and many varieties of beans and peas.

Because the delele and other groups of vegetables are always so plentiful and easily available in the natural environment, it is one ndiwo that is frequently held in contempt. In rural Zambia the daily conversation will often focus on how difficult it is to get ndiwo. Someone will invariably complain that they have been eating delele for three straight days. Since any type of meat protein is the most scarce, it is the most valued or desired. In fact there is a special term that is used for that irresistible desire or yearning for meat which is known as nkhuli in Eastern Zambia and Malawi.

The pair of nshima and dende, ndiyo or ndiwo is therefore the most significant Zambian meal. One is rarely possible without the other. The nshima and ndiwo are like Siamese twins, the left and the right hand, student and teacher, husband and wife, male and female or mitt and glove in American baseball parlance. Having nshima without ndiwo or the reverse is possible but is always regarded as a serious anomaly or oddity. If the cook induces the condition of eating nshima or ndiwo on its own, it would be regarded as lack of proper planning. If the diners induce the condition, they would be regarded as having poor judgement or being immature or careless.

One excellent reason for why nshima and ndiwo always go together is that they complement each other. Nshima eaten by itself is rather relatively plain and bland. Although if you are an experienced, seasoned, and sophisticated traditional eater of the meal, the nshima has its own subtle differences in taste and flavor depending on the type of mealie-meal and how it was cooked.

In fact when Westerners and other non-Zambians first eat nshima, their typical reaction is: “God, why don’t you add butter, sugar or something to give it some taste or flavor?” But that is exactly the beauty and deeply acquired taste and appreciation of nshima in that it is the dende, ndiyo, ndiwo or relish second dish that gives it the unique taste or deliciousness. The nshima therefore accentuates the ndiwo and the reverse is also true. Eating the nshima by itself will fill the eater but without any taste of ecstasy. Eating the ndiwo by itself might be gratifying but the individual will not feel full or satiated. Eating nshima by itself is known as kusoza among the Tumbuka people of Zambia. Among the Chewa, kusinkha refers to eating ndiwo or relish by itself in the absence of nshima.

Parliamentarian donates mattresses, blankets to Chaanga School

7

United Party for National Development (UPND) Siavonga Member of Parliament, Darius Mulunda has donated mattresses and blankets to Chaanga Combined Day School aimed at bettering the sleeping quarters for pupils.

Chaanga Combined Day School lies in the outskirts of Siavonga District off the Bottom Road and provides limited and improvised weekly boarding facilities to some girls while the rest are renting in nearby villages.

ZANIS reports that Mr. Mulunda handed over the mattresses and blankets to some pupils during his visit to the school following a request that was made by both school management and parents to consider helping girls that come from far flung areas of Siavonga.

The parliamentarian disclosed that the government is in the process of upgrading the school into a fully-fledged boarding secondary school so as to enable pupils to be accommodated within their school precincts.

Mr. Mulunda further disclosed that using some money from the 2023 Constituency Development Fund (CDF), the government will build a modern dormitory with waterborne toilets and other auxiliary facilities in line with the presidential directive.

Earlier, Chaanga Secondary School Section Deputy Head teacher, Mulaka Phiri said lack of proper dormitories at the school has made it almost impossible for management to monitor the activities of the pupils especially the girls that are renting in nearby villages.

Ms. Phiri described the situation as bad as some of the girls are reportedly falling prey to manoeuvers of some unscrupulous men that are enticing them some goodies in exchange for sex.

And in a joint vote of thanks, Monde Mboyonga and Aubrey Mangwanda, commended President Hakainde Hichilema for introducing the “Free Education Policy” that has enabled pupils from poor families to access education.

The two pupils further commended President Hichilema for directing schools to ensure that no pupil sits on the floor during lessons.

The pupils pledged to work extra hard in school as a way of showing appreciation to their area member of parliament’s kind gesture of supporting them with beddings and other assorted school requirements.

Mr. Mulunda is accompanied by Siavonga Town Council Constituency Development Fund Committee (CDFC) Chairperson, Lubinda Mubiana and Mulimya Ward Councillor Sydney Simweemba.

Put God first in order to achieve positive results – President Hichilema

24

President Hakainde Hichilema has urged citizens to put God first in everything they do if they are to achieve positive results.

The President says nothing meaningful can be done if citizens do not recognize God in their lives and business.

Mazabuka flood victims assured of Govt help – Vice President

Vice President Mutale Nalumango has visited families affected by floods in Mwanachingwala Ward of Magoye Constituency in Mazabuka District, with a pledge to send additional tents from the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).

About 345 families in the ward were affected by floods, while 120 have been relocated to a centre at Mukuyu Primary school were 30 tents were set up to accommodate them.

Speaking when she visited the flood victims at the Centre in Mazabuka on Friday, Mrs Nalumango said DMMU was sending 50 extra tents to accommodate more families in addition to blankets, sugar, water and salt as the affected families’ belongings were submerged in water.

“We could have come earlier but we had a problem of accessibility. I have noted that so many households have been affected, livestock has been lost, infrastructure has been destroyed, crossing points, bridges, schools have had roofs blown off and some health facilities have been affected,” she said.

Mrs Nalumango said the floods were unprecedented, and Government did not foresee that so many people would be affected by the excess water.

She said Government would help all affected citizens regardless of their location and would continue mopping up resources to work on crossing points and bridges that had been affected by the flash floods.

The Vice President however, urged the local leadership to make use of the five percent component for disasters under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF).

Earlier, Mazabuka District Commissioner Oliver Mulomba said 120 households were affected by floods in the district.

Mr Mulomba said other than the households, most of the crossing points, culverts and roads in Mwanachingwala Ward had been destroyed.

“The people in Mwanachingwala Ward are grateful for the support from DMMU but we need more help for the affected families,” he said.

And Magoye Member of Parliament, Mweemba Malambo said due to the insufficient number of tents, not all affected families were brought to the centre at Mukuyu Primary School.

Mr Malambo said the other affected families were currently squatting elsewhere.

He appealed for more tents, food and sanitation facilities for the affected families.

While in Mazabuka, Mrs Nalumango was accompanied by Southern Province Permanent Secretary Namani Moonze and she has since returned to Lusaka.
