Chambeshi Happy with Power’s Slender Win Over Caala

6

Power Dynamos coach Beston Chambeshi insists he is satisfied with his team’s slender 1-0 win over Angola’s Recreativo de Caala in Sunday’s home CAF Confederation Cup match in Kitwe.

Chambeshi’s Power needed a 70th minute header from striker Graven Chitalu to beat Caala in a preliminary round, first leg match at Arthur Davies.

He told journalists at Arthur Davies that he was comfortable with a narrow score-line.

Chambeshi stated that it was important for Power to start the Confederation Cup campaign with a victory.

“I am happy with the result.I am comfortable with the 1-0 win,” Chambeshi said.

“The win is important for us, it is better we pick a point other than drawing 0-0,” he added.

Chambeshi hinted that he will maintain the team he used on Sunday ahead of the return leg on 2nd March.

Meanwhile, Caala coach Ricardo Formozinho regretted the one goal his team conceded.

“One mistake from my team Power scored but it’s okay we have the second leg in Angola,” Formozinho stated.

Oliver Saasa urges politicians to reduce political squabbles for the country to continue enjoying the good economic performance

Renowned Lusaka based economist Oliver Saasa has underscored the need for politicians to reduce political squabbles for the country to continue enjoying the good economic performance it has recorded in recent years.

Professor Saasa noted that political squabbles have the potential to dampen the good economic strides the country has posted over the years.

He told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that it was imperative that politicians engage in dialogue to sort out their political differences as opposed to causing unnecessary tension in the country.

Prof. Saasa pointed out that a good political environment was cardinal for the growth of the economy as investors can only invest in a country that was politically stable.

He said well meaning citizens should not allow politics to disrupt the good economic indicators that the country has managed to achieve.

And Prof. Saasa has urged the Zambian government to take advantage of the visit by the nine World Bank Senior Executive Directors who are expected in the country tomorrow.

He said government should engage the world economic body on various economic challenges it was currently facing.

He said it was important to highlight challenges the country has faced in sectors such agriculture, railway and tourism to see how the World Bank can help out in maximising the potential which these sectors have for the growth of the country’s economy.

Meanwhile, another Lusaka based economist Trevor Simuumba, said government should be honest about challenges it was facing during meetings with the World Bank Executive Directors.

Mr. Simuumba said honesty will help the country to receive the necessary support it requires to address whatever challenges it was facing.

He told ZANIS in a separate interview that it was also important that the Zambian government and the private sector speak with a united voice in order to have clear discussions with the World Bank officials.

He also encouraged government to have regular meetings with the private sector to discuss challenges the latter were facing in their day to day operations.

Mr. Simuumba noted that it was not ideal for government to only listen to the labour market because the owners of enterprises were the ones who were struggling to make profits.

And the Private Sector Development Association (PSDA) said the country should set an agenda for the meetings with the World Bank officials as opposed to a situation where international organisations dictate the programme during such discussions.

PSDA chairperson Yusuf Dodia said much as the World Bank was useful to the development of the country, Zambia should be in the driving seat on issues that will need to be discussed.

Mr. Dodia observed that this was an important opportunity for the country to discuss with the World Bank on how it can effectively work with the Zambian government to foster development in the country.

He advised government to table among other issues the Sixth National Development Plan (SNDP), the expansion of the railway system in the country, the country’s tourism potential and issues affecting the agriculture sector.

He said these were some of the major issues that would propel economic development in the country.

Let’s have constructive online interactions and not insults-Sakeni

Government Chief Spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni

Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services Kennedy Sakeni has urged Zambians to use internet constructively and avoid abusing the online facilities.

He called for constructive use of internet and avoid abusing such facilities.

“I would encourage internet freedom but that freedom should not be abused to insult others. Let’s have constructive online interactions and not insults, give your point of view and not insults, ” he said

“Insulting the Head of State every day is wrong even if you didn’t vote for him because majority Zambians voted for him. Who would like his father every day insulted online?” he asked.

Mr Sakeni said most bloggers who were insulting others and daring the Government were young people between the ages of 25 and 45.

And Kennedy Sakeni said government was working hard towards equipping the public media in Livingstone ahead of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) General Assembly in August this year.

Mr. Sakeni said government was committed to providing basic tools to the public media so that they could effectively cover the UNWTO general assembly.

He commended the media for the important role they have continued to play towards Zambia’s successful co-hosting of the UNWTO general assembly by highlighting the country’s tourist attractions and the preparations it is making.

”It is pleasing to note that the media in the country have remained reliable allies from the time Zambia won the bid to co-host the UNWTO General Assembly to date. Hardly a day passes without reading or hearing something to do with the UNWTO in the media,” he said.\

[pullquote]“Insulting the Head of State every day is wrong even if you didn’t vote for him because majority Zambians voted for him. Who would like his father every day insulted online?” he asked.[/pullquote]

The minister was speaking in Livingstone yesterday during an interactive press briefing with Livingstone based Journalists at Protea hotel.

He however urged the media to intensify their efforts in publicizing the event and educating the public about it.

He said the event will leave a lasting impact and impression on the country’s tourism and economic fortunes.

Mr. Sakeni said so far preparations in terms of logistics, conferencing and hospitality, point to a resoundingly successful UNWTO General Assembly.

The Minister has since called on the people of Livingstone to be exemplary in their reception and hospitality towards the visitors who will come to Livingstone to sample some of the world’s best tourist attractions.

And Mr. Sakeni has said the issue of the partial restructuring of the Ministry of Information and Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) headquarters was unacceptable adding that government was doing everything possible to ensure that the issue was addressed.

On the sit in protest by the Zambia Daily Mail workers two days ago but who have since resumed work, Mr. Sakeni said the problem lay in lack of recapitalisation.

He observed that all the public media that include the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), Times of Zambia and Zambia Daily Mail need recapitalisation.

He added that the vision of the Patriotic Front (PF) government was to recapitalise the three public media institutions.

”As for now, we need to live and manage ourselves. There are boards running these institutions except for one whose committee is being reconstituted. We will first leave it to the boards but the most important thing is to recapitalise before we think of anything else,” he said.

Police have intercepted two trucks in a syndicate of suspected stolen copper in Mkushi district of Central Province.

Mkushi District Commissioner (DC) Christopher Chibuye has commended Police in the district for their swift action to foil the suspected theft of 23 tonnes of copper cathodes.

Mr Chibuye, who confirmed the incident to ZANIS, said police had acted quickly to thwart a case of suspected theft of copper cathodes involving 2 trucks which were found along Great North Road in Mkushi’s Katuba area yesterday.

The Tanzania bound truck laden with 23 tonnes of copper cathodes was stolen after the driver was allegedly drugged by a woman whom he had given a lift.

The driver gave a pregnant woman a lift in Ndola and during the journey the woman offered some drinks to the driver and his lorry boy.The security officer accompanying the truck did not take the drink. The driver and lorry boy started feeling drowsy and later found themselves dumped by the road side.

Central Commissioner of Police Standwell Lungu who confirmed the development said the driver and lorry boy were dumped on the road side after Mkushi district and only gained consciousness much later to find the truck disappeared.

Mr Lungu said the two, upon regaining consciousness, reported the matter to police who in turn found a group of people offloading the copper onto a different truck within Mkushi district. The woman and her accomplices, however, managed to run away.

Mkushi District Commissioner (DC) Christopher Chibuye disclosed that reports indicated that the copper cathodes were coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and were in transit to Tanzania. He said the suspected theft of the cathodes involved the transfer of the metal from one of the two trucks found on the scene to the other truck. The District Commissioner further mentioned that one of the trucks was a Zambian owned Scania truck bearing registration ACR—4360, saying that its ownership was traced back to a Kitwe based company named Emageoy Enterprise.Mr Chibuye the cathodes were being loaded on to the containerized Scania truck, from the Tanzanian owned DAF truck registration T-610 BKN, adding that its ownership had been traced to Imara Express Ltd of Dar-e-Salaam.He also pointed out that police had attributed the success of the operation to a tip-off from members of the public, adding that it was important for the Police and residents to continue upholding this cooperation in curbing crime.

Meanwhile management of Amazon Security Systems revealed that the impounded copper cathodes belonged to Trafigura—Impala metal transportation and processing company.Amazon Security Director, Kibombwe Chabu, stated that his security firm was aware of the source and destination of the copper cathodes as it had a contract to provide security services for courier as well as storage of metals such as copper cathodes of Trafigura-Impala Company.Mr Chabu said that 23 tonnes of copper cathodes coming from the Congo were on board the DAF truck that was supposed to be en-route to Dar-e-Salaam in Tanzania.

Transport and Communications Deputy Minister, Panji Kaunda, also visited the scene where the two trucks were stationed, as he was coming from Northern Province on Road Traffic Safety Agency (RTSA) patrols.

Col Kaunda said he was cheered by the prompt response of police officers towards the suspected theft of the copper cathodes, and urged the officers to keep up the good work.

By press time, police officers that were stationed at the scene where the two trucks had parked in the bush in Katuba area, had succeeded in transferring the trucks from Mkushi to Kapiri Mposhi Police station.

According to the advertisement published in Sunday Times of Zambia, ZRL invited eligible bidders to float tenders to supply the materials, track equipment and tools.

The tender was floated on February 12, 2013 and would close on March 5, 2013 before 14:30 hours.

He said ZRL would ensure that the railway system promoted national development and ensure people travelled safely for work between towns.

CDDR to Launch Video Series Exposing Rights Abuses by Zambian Government

55

The Coalition for the Defence of Democratic Rights (CDDR) is announcing the launch of a series of online videos displaying evidence of alleged civil and human rights abuses by the current Government of Zambia.

The first video of the series, released today on YouTube and the CDDR website, contains footage of police brutality exercised against opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema and numerous members of the United Party for National Development (UPND) on August 9th 2012, when police fired tear gas canisters indoors, causing a stampede and several injuries.

Mr. Hichilema, as well as other opposition leaders such as Nevers Mumba of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD), have faced multiple politically motivated arrests in recent months based on highly questionable grounds as part of a recent campaign of persecution by the Patriotic Front (PF) government.

The videos are being published in support of a recent application presented before the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) requesting an independent investigation into serious and persistent violations by the Zambian government of President Michael Sata and the PF. Following a widely covered press conference held by opposition leaders in Johannesburg on Feb. 12, the Zambian government has cracked down harder, issuing threats and even initiating a controversial bid to strip immunity of former President Rupiah Banda without providing any details of allegations.

Future videos to be released shall address unlawful persecution of the MMD as well as civil society groups, incitement of ethnic violence by individuals such as President Sata and Minister of Justice Wynter Kabimba, and instances of misconduct by Mutembo Nchito, the Director of Public Prosecutions, and Fred M’membe, the owner and editor of the pro-government newspaper, The Post.

The CDDR welcomes anonymous submissions of video evidence of rights violations on its website, whether they are recorded on smart phones, security cameras, or amateur video. The board of directors of CDDR emphasizes that only through high-level exposure can we accomplish our goal of instilling accountability, ending impunity, and returning Zambia to the rule of law.

More information on the CDDR’s activities and the full copy of the Commonwealth Report can be read at http://cddr-zambia.org.

Evidence against Rupiah demanded before immunity is lifted

28

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has challenged the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and other law enforcement agencies to come out clear and provide the nation with evidence that would necessitate the lifting of immunity of former republican president, Rupiah Banda.

YALI says this will help to remove speculation and doubts from certain sections of society that the former Head of State is being persecuted at the instigation of persons or bodies who harbor hatred or seek vengeance against him.

YALI governance advisor Isaac Mwanza said his organisation will only support the lifting of Mr. Banda’s immunity if law enforcement agencies and government show solid evidence.

Mr. Mwanza said YALI is concerned with a growing cartel of criminals who wield too much power and are willing to use their resources to defend each other and abuse public trust for selfish interests.

In a statement to QFM, Mr. Mwanza has since asked the nation to firmly oppose such people who want to break the law and abuse public trust.

He has also called on civill society organizations and the media to wait and keenly look forward to evidence from law enforcement agencies on the alleged wrong-doing by Mr. Rupiah Banda before they could form opinions that incite and unnecessarily excite the nation to rise against the former President in the absence of such evidence.

Mr. Mwanza says YALI will stand to support government in its duty to protect public resources and bringing all persons connected with plunder of public resources to book as long as the due process of the law is followed and that the accused are treated in accordance with laws of natural justice.

[/pullquote]”It is government’s responsibility to provide food to the people. I task you (DC) to ensure food is brought and given to the people faced by hunger here,” he said.

And Dr. Scott has demanded for a comprehensive report from Minister of Tourism and Arts Sylvia Masebo on the human-animal conflict in chief Sikute’s area.
Dr. Scott told Mrs. Masebo to coordinate with the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) and provide a report before the situation gets out of hand.
His directive follows complaints from chief Sikute’s representative Headman Ngenda who said at the same rally that elephants and other wild animals were eating and destroyed people’s maize fields in the area.Headman Ngenda said villagers are therefore threatened by hunger.

Dr. Scott has meanwhile reiterated government’s commitment to improving water and sanitation and rehabilitating of infrastructures such as schools, roads and health posts. He further said government was aware of the current ban on timber which he said has indirectly affected the people who depend on timber for their livelihoods.

Ms. Kabanshi said government would also construct a modern market in the area.

“Politics is not food. You can’t eat politics every day. Do not listen to finished politicians from the opposition but align yourselves to the ruling PF because modern politics goes with time,” he said.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Charity Katanga told ZANIS in Mazabuka yesterday that 32 year old Musuka Kawengo of Libuyu Compound in Livingstone allegedly destroyed a PF Chitenge material last night at Focal Point bar.

She said the material that was alleged to have been destroyed was taken to Libuyu police station and will be used as an exhibit at the courts of law tomorrow when the suspect appears in court.

Meanwhile, unknown people in Livingstone have attacked two lovers that were found having a good time in a car which they parked a few kilometres from the Livingstone weighbridge along the Livingstone-Lusaka road.

Mumbwa District Commissioner Sunday Shamabanse has predicated a poor crop yield for the 2012-2013 farming season.

Mr. Shamabanse lamented that Mumbwa has recorded an increase in rainfall which has caused floods.

He said the floods will affect most of the farmers’ crop yield in the district this year.

He told ZANIS today that the situation poses a serious challenge to the farmers who largely depend on farming as a sole source of income and livelihood.

Mr. Shamabanse said 18 villages in Nangoma and 17 in Mumbwa constituencies have been greatly hit by floods.

He said the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has already distributed relief food and some tents to affected families to cushion the impact of floods.

The District Commission said his office, with the help from the DMMU, has since embarked on a programme of giving out mosquito nets and chorine in bid to avoid outbreaks of malaria and diarrhoea diseases as most water sources were likely to be contaminated.

He said most of the roads in the district have also become impassable due to the floods that have hit the area.

Mr. Shamabanse however, stated that the affected roads will only be worked on by government when the rain season is over.

He observed that it was difficult for government to commence any works on the roads and drainages since the district was still receiving heavy rains.

Meanwhile, Mr. Shamabanse has thanked government for the youth empowerment fund allocated to Mumbwa.

He said the funds have assisted youths in the district to venture into small and medium enterprises.

Mr. Shamabanse cited a youth group in Nangoma area that invested the money into a hammer mill which has since benefited a lot of local people.

Vice President Guy Scott has reiterated that he was entitled to using government resources on any kind of public duty he undertakes.

Dr. Scott said he was not in any way abusing government resources even when he was campaigning in constituencies where there were parliamentary by-elections.

He said Zambians were free to amend the constitution to remove some of his entitlements if they felt that government resources were being abused.

He was speaking in Livingstone yesterday when he featured on the Vic Falls Radio programme known as “At Check Point”.

Dr. Scott was reacting to allegations that he was abusing public resources by going round to campaign for the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) candidate, Lawrence Evans, in the forthcoming parliamentary by-election in Livingstone.

He argued that when third Republican President Levy Mwanawasa died in 2008, former President Rupiah Banda, who was then Vice President, had access to a helicopter, a plane and vehicles for his easy mobility.

“You the people of Zambia have the freedom to change the constitution because that is law. I can move here and there as your Republican Vice President. If you don’t want that, l urge you to make submissions to the ongoing constitution making process which is the technical committee,” he said.

[pullquote]“I am completely intolerant of corruption myself and if there was anything going on in PF which was not being attended to properly, I would have made noise even though I am Vice President.[/pullquote]

And responding to a questions from callers in Livingstone when he featured on Falls FM Radio Check Point’ Programme, the Vice President Guy Scott said that he was intolerant to corruption and that he could have spoken out if there were any corrupt practices in the Patriotic Front (PF).

Dr Scott said the PF spent its own resources transparently when it was in the opposition for 10 and half years until Zambians voted it into Government in 2011.

He said the ruling party would not let Zambians down and start engaging in wrong vices such as corruption.

[pullquote]“It doesn’t mean that allegations on high profile people in PF are true. People make a lot of claims including saying that the recent accidents are as a result of Satanism,” he said.[/pullquote]

“I am completely intolerant of corruption myself and if there was anything going on in PF which was not being attended to properly, I would have made noise even though I am Vice President.

“We are not greedy or materialistic people. Even President Sata is not materialistic,” he said.

Dr Scott urged Zambians to give the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) time to investigate corruption allegations within PF as opposed to concluding that the ruling party had corrupt elements when ACC investigations were not yet concluded.

“It doesn’t mean that allegations on high profile people in PF are true. People make a lot of claims including saying that the recent accidents are as a result of Satanism,” he said.

Luka Milanzi Hopes for Better Fortunes at Zesco Utd

Malawian midfielder Luka Milanzi says he was targeting to play regularly at Zesco United where TP Mazembe have loaned him.

Milanzi has joined Zesco on a one-year-long loan deal after struggling to command a place in the Mazembe team.

He told LT Sports in Kitwe that he was excited to join Zesco.

Milanzi stated that he was not content to stay at Mazembe minus playing.

“They (Mazembe) didn’t give me much time to play that is why I asked for this loan move,” he said.

” That is why I am here I want to play. Being a player is about playing,” Milanzi stated.

“I am feeling good and the boys (Zesco players) are very friendly so it is good to join them,” he added.

Zesco had interest in Milanzi before he joined Mazembe.

Power beat Caala in Unconvincing Fashion

16

Power Dynamos beat RC Caala of Angola in their 2013 Confederation Cup preliminary round first leg game at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

And as the score line states, it wasn’t easy for Power who needed a second half goal to seal their home win in labored fashion.

Power have a huge mountain to climb going by their performance today.

Their off-season signing in ex-Forest Rangers striker Nasha Kaya failed to show any quality to match the yellow shirt he had the privilege of wearing on Sunday.

Kaya was the epitome of a poor first half for Power in which they failed to take a single quality shot on goal.

Furthermore, midfielder Mukuka Mulenga also failed to show any of that spirit he displayed after rising the bar with Zambia on its way to flopping at the 2013 Africa Cup in South Africa.

Redemption for Power came in the 70th minute when striker Graven Chitalu headed in a cross from Kennedy Mudenda to give them a respectable home result to take away to Angola on March 2.

Power must now get a draw at Caala to ensure they book their first round passage.
