Political struggle National Youth Chairperson Zanco Mpundu Mutembo has hailed Zambians for maintaining peace and unity after liberating from the British rule in 1964.

Mr. Mutembo who broke the chains during the struggle for the country independence says he is happy that the country has remained united and peaceful and urged Zambians to treasure what freedom fighters died for.

He said as a freedom fighter himself, it pleases him to see Zambians walk up and about freely without being restricted which he said was what him and his fellow youths then fought for.

He explained that he was arrested and handcuffed with chains which he broke in the presence of 18 soldiers armed with guns.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS at State house today Mr. Mutembo narrated that he was ordered to break free from the chains or be instantly shot dead.

Shockingly, he broke the chains in full view of soldiers and photographers who took shots of what seem like magical power.

He explained that all that happened at the force Headquarters where he was first interviewed on his involvement and influence in the struggle before he was subjected to chain punishment.

Mr. Mutembo who became emotional when he was narrating his ordeal , explained that the soldiers were amazed how the chain broke just like some people today do not believe that it was a real chain.

He however admitted that it was really hard for him but he managed to pull hard and the chain napped and the governor raised his hands in surprise.

Mpundu Mutembo got involved in the political struggle against the colonialists in their village in Northern Province at the age of 18 in 1954.

He rose to the position of National Youth Chairperson for the political struggle.

Mr. Mutembo is now a national symbol as his statue has been displayed as a freedom statue along Independence Avenue in Lusaka where the laying of wreaths takes place every Independence Day in memory of the fore-fathers who died during the struggle.

Thousands of Mongu residents in Western Province today turned up at Mongu sports stadium to witness this year’s Independence commemorations under the theme “Celebrating 48 Independence with vision, hard work and unity.”

During his speech ,Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba said Western Province has played a unifying role and contributed immensely to Zambia’s Post-Independence National Development.

Kabimba who is also Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General said it is for this reason that government places the important role played by the Western Province at the centrepiece of its priorities.

“Throughout the history and independence of our country, the Western Province has played a unifying role and contributed immensely to Zambia’s Post-Independence National Development.” He said.

Mr. Kabimba said that government has noted that social and economic development has been slow in Western Province compared with other provinces in last two decades hence the Pf government has already made a practical statement of intent in the Province.

He revealed that government this year allocated K15 billion for various poverty reduction programmes in the Western Province out of which K14.5 billion has been disbursed so far.

Kabimba said the PF government has recorded great progress in developing Western Province in its one year of power citing the earmarking of Lukulu- Katunda- Watopa road, the Kalao- Kalongola- Sitoti road and the Kasempa – Kaoma road under the link Zambia 8000 project.

Scores of Mongu residents lined the streets to watch the marching band during the 48th independencs celebrations in Mongu

Kabimba said government intends to connect Shangombo and Lukulu District to the Nation Electricity Grid in the near future to enhance investment in the two districts.

“Moving into the near future, let me assure the people of Western Province that the PF government intends to connect Shangombo and Lukulu district to the national electricity grid so as to attract investment to the districts” he said

He further said government has started the process of tendering the rehabilitation of township roads in Mongu adding that government will also create paved bricks manufacturing plants in Kaoma and Senanga districts for the purpose of paving all townships roads in the province and turn create more jobs.

Kabimba said in the next four years the PF government will transform the agriculture system to encourage crop diversification and food security in order to tap into the potential of each province in the country.

“The Western Province and the rest of Zambia will continue benefitting from the farmer input support programme (FISP)” he assured.

And in delivering a sermon, Director of Chaplin at the Zambia Air Force Eugene Nyambe noted that there is no worse evil against national unity than citizens dividing themselves on political, tribal, regional and social economic grounds.

Stanchart boss Mizinga Melu relives experience on Emirates flight EK 714

STANDARD Chartered Bank managing director Mizinga Melu has relived the horrendous experience of being on Emirates Airline, Flight EK 714 which caught fire 30 minutes after take-off from the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka on Sunday night.

Mrs Melu, who is also Zambia Daily Mail board chairperson, narrated the hair-raising experience of over 135 passengers and 15 crew members.

“We could have died…Thank God we are alive,” the shaken Mrs Melu said.According to Mrs Melu, all seemed well until 30 minutes in the air when “we heard a bang…it was so loud and suddenly the plane started shaking…Thank God we are alive…I’m traumatised.”Mrs Melu was flying to America through Dubai.

Emirates country manager Khalid Ali Hassan said flight EK 714, which was flying at an altitude of 34,000 feet above sea level, returned safely to Lusaka after an engine failure.

The Airbus 330-200 carrying 135 passengers took off from KK International Airport around 23:00 hours.Mr Hassan said Emirates engineers from the Dubai head office were scheduled to arrive in the country to establish the cause of the fire.

Impeccable sources have also disclosed that the British manufacturers of the Rolls Royce engines and other aircraft body are expected in the country to launch comprehensive investigations.

The manufacturers are “seriously concerned” about the fault because it is the first time an airbus 330-200 has developed such a serious fault which could be a manufacturing error, the sources said.

“The aircraft landed normally, taxied to the stand and passengers disembarked. Passengers were accommodated in hotels and have now been re-booked on alternative flights with Emirates or other airlines. The safety of our passengers and crew is of utmost importance and will not be compromised,” Emirates spokesperson Ms Gillian Langmead said.

A check for some of the affected customers at some hotels in Lusaka yielded no results as management at the hotels declined to disclose clients lodging on the Emirates account.

But impeccable sources at Kennth Kaunda International Airport disclosed that the engine is extensively damaged and requires replacement and that blades snapped and ripped through the engine cover.

The sources said about three port side fan blades snapped off the propeller and shot through the engine nacelle (engine cover or housing), causing a big hole.
The port side is the left hand side of a plane occupied by the captain while the co-pilot occupies the star bode on the right hand side.
The sources said the development caused a fire to the engine which the pilots managed to put out using an inbuilt fire extinguisher operated from the cockpit.

“The plane left at 23:00 hours and the next flight we were going to service was KQ [Kenya Airways] after clearing Emirates but we received information when it was 64 miles [about 103 kilometres] away from Kennth Kaunda International airport, that the Emirates plane had an engine fault.

“It had an alternative of landing in Ndola but the airport does not operate for 24 hours, and it is limited in capacity to handle such a big plane,” the source said.

The source added that the plane also had another alternative of landing in a neighbouring country but could not because of instability in that country.
And a check at the airport found an investigations team made up of officials from the Department of Civil Aviation and Zambia Air Force, inspecting the affected engine and taking photographs for preliminary investigations.

The plane had been towed away from the apron and its engine covers were visibly covered with black soot. It was cordoned off with masking tapes.
Airport officials were by press time searching for possible debris which could have fallen from the plane, to no avail.

Former MMD National Secretary Katele Kalumba, has dragged Labour Minister, Fackson Shamenda to court for allegedly grabbing a piece of land from him.

Dr Kalumba who is a former Finance Minister has since asked the Lusaka High Court to grant him an injunction to restrain Mr Shamenda from carrying out any developments on the said land.

This is contained in a writ of summons filed on Monday before the Lusaka Principal Registry by Dr Kalumba of Lake View house, Natende, Chiengi district, Luapula province.

He has sued Attorney General Mumba Malila as the second defendant pursuant to the State Proceedings Act Chapter 71 of the Laws of Zambia.

He is seeking a declaratory that the re-entry by the Commissioner of Lands on the said plot was null and void and an order that Mr Malila should give back the said Certificate of Title L 318 to him or alternatively to Dr Kalumba and be the re-registered beneficial owner and issued with a Certificate of Title.

Dr Kalumba is further seeking damages, profit accrued, interests and costs from Mr Shamenda.

He contends in his statement of claim that he was the holder of Title number L318 relating to Plot number 9395/M situated in Lusaka province and that Mr Shamenda was purported to be the holder of Certificate number 185050 relating to Lot number 9395/M situated in the same province.

Dr Kalumba said he was at all material times ending October 19, 2012 the registered owner of the property situate in Lusaka and known as Lot Number 9395/M, Lusaka.

He said by October 9, 2012 the Commissioner registered in the Lands and Deeds Registry a Certificate of re-entry and on October 12, 2012, the Registrar of Lands issued a new Certificate of Title number L8550 to Mr Shamenda.

He said when he acquired the said property, he engaged Aquanova Limited to carry out construction of developments but the police had started using the same land as their recreation place and as such it was not available for development.

He said he approached the Commissioner of Lands and attempts were made to give him an alternative piece of land but the same never came to pass.

Dr Kalumba said when the Commissioner of Lands failed to give him alternative land, his wife delivered building materials to the place but was advised by the people he found at the site that the land belonged to Mr Shamenda.

He said this was done without any notice given to him adding that there were no lawful grounds which existed for forfeiture or re-entry of the said property before allocating it to Mr Shamenda.

Dr Kalumba said as a result of Mr Shamenda’s behaviour, he has suffered loss and damages the reason he was seeking relief from the courts of law.

He is being represented by Vincent Malambo and Company.

No new reports of violence in Mufumbwe – ECZ

Electoral commission of Zambia Public Relations Manager Cris Akufuna says the commission has not received any fresh cases of electoral violence in the Mufumbwe by-election campaigns in North-western province

Mr. Akufuna said some commission officials who are currently on the ground in the area have not given flesh cases of electoral violence indicating that the campaigns among political parties are going on smoothly.

He told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka that should the commission receive further cases of electoral violence in Mufumbwe, Members of the public would be informed through the media.

Recently, North Western province Police Commissioner Eugene Sibote also refuted reports that Mufumbwe parliamentary by-election campaigns are marred with violence.

Mr. Sibote said political activities leading to the Mufumbwe parliamentary by-election next month are going on peacefully and that any reports suggesting otherwise are not true.

He told a media briefing in his office that sufficient police manpower has been deployed to prevent any form of political anarchy during the by-election period in the area.

“We have sufficient police officers in Mufumbwe and so far so good in terms of preventing political violence and protecting the residents of Mufumbwe,” he said.

Mr. Sibote said as Provincial Police Commissioner, he was going to shift his office to Mufumbwe to work alongside his officers.

He also disclosed that more police officers from other regions have been brought in to beef up the North Western province police manpower deployed in Mufumbwe.

He said this move must not be misconstrued by anyone for anything else, other than the fact that Zambia Police has a national mandate of protecting the lives of people, and to that effect police officers from other parts of the country can be deployed anywhere it is deemed necessary.

Mr. Sibote has since warned that anyone harbouring plans to cause violence in Mufumbwe will be met with the full force of the law and used as an example to show that it does not pay to break the law.

Zambia Police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela

In an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Ms. Kanjela described the reports as unfounded and misleading.

She said police officers accommodated in Police Camps are not entitled to housing allowance but those not residing in the camps.

She stated that the sentiments being peddled by some media houses are untrue and that they should be brushed aside.

Ms. Kanjela said the September and October payslips do not contain any changes to that effect.

She advised some people circulating this rumour to desist from doing so because it is un ethical and dangerous to mislead the public.

Sata should be the last person to condemn those shunning Uhuru celebrations-Nevers

MMD president Nevers Mumba during a press briefing
MMD president Nevers Mumba during a press briefing

MMD leader Dr. Nevers Mumba has stated that it is hypocritical for President Michael Sata to condemn opposition leaders who have decided to shun Wednesday’s commemoration of Zambia’ 48th Independence anniversary.

At a news briefing in Lusaka, Dr. Mumba said President Sata has gone on record has one of the politicians who never attended any state functions whilst in opposition.

“It is hypocritical for President Sata to turn around and criticize our decision to stay away from such celebrations because he never attended any in the ten years in opposition,” Dr. Mumba added.

He said attending celebrations at State House might be misconstrued to mean that he was happy with the manner in which President Sata is administering national issues.

Dr. Mumba said staying away from State House functions is another signal that the opposition has declared a dispute with government over key national issues.

“I don’t need to have tea at State House with President Sata to make him aware that things are not well in this country. I would rather stay home with my family and have tea at my house although I may not have enough Sugar in my tea or I would even spend time with the poor at the Village than sit and drink tea at State House,” Dr. Mumba said.

Meanwhile, Opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) will not attend tomorrow’s independence celebrations because the party has not received official invitation from the government.

FDD Secretary General Nathan Mulonga has confirmed the development in an interview with ZANIS today adding that the party would have loved to participate in the independence celebrations.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr. Mulonga described the incidence as an oversight on the part of Cabinet Office.

“As FDD, we have not received an invitation letter to attend the 2012 independence celebrations. We could have loved to participate but we can’t. I think it’s an over-sight on the part of government,” he lamented.

And Mr. Mulonga has advised Zambians to desist from excessive drinking because it is counter-productive.

“People should avoid drinking too much but concentrate on areas which realise economic independence,” said Mr Mulonga.

He thanked the fore fathers for liberating Zambia politically noting that the nation has achieved a lot since attaining independence 48 years ago.

But Zambia Empowerment for Development (ZED) Secretary General Kelly Mukonka confirmed that his party has received official invitation from government to attend independence celebrations at State House tomorrow.

Mr. Mukonka told ZANIS in a separate interview that his party will participate in the independence commemorations .

“ZED received the invitation letter from government and we shall attend the independence celebrations at State House,” Mr. Mukonka said.

But Cabinet Office Permanent Secretary In-charge of Special Duties In’utu Suba said the government expected all patriotic Zambians to take part in the celebrations.

Ms Suba stated that she sent invitation letters to all stakeholders including political parties to attend the Independence Day celebrations because national events were not restricted only to the ruling Patriotic Front party.

Ms. Suba slammed opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema to shun Independence Day celebrations at State for selfish interests.

Mr. Hichilema has indicated that he will boycott this year’s national event which falls on October 24, 2012 saying it was a sheer waste of time.

The theme for this year’s independence day is dubbed,” Celebrating 48 years of independence with vision, hardwork and unity.

President Michael Sata is tomorrow expected to honour freedom fighters and other eminent Zambians for their distinguished contributions to the nation as part of independence celebrations.

And commenting on this year’s theme, President Sata said it is most appropriate as it underscores the need for the nation to be visionary and focused in its quest to attain socio-economic development.

The 2012 independence theme is dubbed, “celebrating forty-eight years of independence with vision, hard work and unity.”

The President hinted that the national vision for the country under his administration is to become a prosperous middle income country by 2030.

He said this would translate into increased income levels for the people and enabling them to have access to decent health, education, shelter, food, clean water, sanitation and other basic needs thereby poverty levels in the country will significantly be reduced.

President Sata urged the Zambian citizens to improve productivity in their respective sectors and strive to have a positive attitude and mindset towards work as a country because no one will develop this country but ourselves.

President Sata is tomorrow expected to lead freedom fighters, defence chiefs, diplomats accredited to Zambia and senior government officials in laying wreaths at the freedom stature.

Kitwe Central Baby swap case: Minister castigates management and orders immediate DNA test

Kitwe Central Hospital
Kitwe Central Hospital

Copperbelt Province Minister Mwenya Musenge has taken a swipe at Kitwe Central Hospital management over the negligence that resulted in a suspected baby swapping case at the institution.

Mr Musenge who yesterday, visited the parents of the baby suspected to have been swapped with another a month ago at Kitwe Central Hospital after delivery said it was unacceptable for such cases to occur when deliveries are conducted by well trained personnel.

He urged medical professionals to be extra-careful when dealing with such maternal cases.

The minister has since directed the hospital Medical Superintendent John Mwewa to ensure that DNA test is immediately conducted to clear the suspicion that the parents could have over the parentage of the baby.

Mr Musenge also donated assorted baby clothing and groceries for the baby.

The Copperbelt minister further assured the family that government will ensure that the baby’s father who has been suspended for work because of the baby case is called back by his employer , Kitwe United Football Team.

And Kitwe Central Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Mwewa said the hospital management is making arrangements for the DNA test to be conducted so that the parentage of the child is determined.

Dr Mwewa said the child and the parents will on Thursday this week be sent to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka where their blood samples will be taken and sealed in their presence and then sent to South Africa for testing.

Meanwhile the couple that has accused some Kitwe Central Hospital medical staff of swapping its baby has insisted that the baby they are keeping is not theirs.

The couple is also resisting to take the baby for a minor operation needed to treat some medical condition on the baby’s navel.

Last month a couple from Kitwe’s Buchi-Kamitondo township accused Kitwe Central Hospital staff of having swapped their baby boy with a baby girl after delivery.

The Mother of the child Anna Mwanza narrated that when she delivered at Bush Clinic, she was shown a baby boy but after being referred to Kitwe Central Hospital, she was given a baby girl.

And Dr Mwewa , the Kitwe Central Hospital Medical Superintendent said there was no baby swapping but the baby could have just been mistaken for a baby boy due to a growth she had on the genitals.

Lusaka Magistrate Willie Banda yesterday refused to grant bail to a Zambia business woman on grounds that she has more than one passport.

Rosemary Mwasakandu aged 49, a resident of Kitwe’s Parklands area appeared in the Lusaka Magistrate Court for plea on a matter where she is accused of being in possession of more than one passport without authority contrary to section 55 of the Immigration and Deportation Act number 18 of 2010 of the laws of Zambia.

Mwasakandu a Zambian by birth is believed to have been married to Mr. Abdoulaye Ndiaye a Canadian and Senegalese national in 1996 but later divorced in 2006.

After denying the charge before magistrate Banda, Mwasakandu made an application for bail saying she had been in police custody from the day she was arrested.

In passing ruling on the application Magistrate Banda told the court that it was not easy to trace Mwasakandu in this case due to the controversy surrounding her passports.

However, Mwasakandus’ lawyer Andy Wright argued that there was no law in Zambia that prohibits women to adopt the nationality of their husbands if they were married to a foreign national whose country permits them to do so.

Mr. Wright further argued that by virtue of Mwasakandu being married to a Canadian man she had the right to have a Canadian nationality and passport bearing her husband’s sir name.

He added that according to the Tanzanian investment laws, when an investor is considered as a major investor they are entitled to acquire the Tanzanian nationality.

He said there was nothing complicated in the matter adding that Mwasakandu was her father’s name and Ndiaye was her ex-husband’s name through which she acquired the other two passports.

However, Magistrate Banda maintained his stance and denied bail to Mwasakandu.

Particulars of the offence her that Mwasakandu rosemary, a Zambian national while in Kitwe on unknown dates but between July and October 2012 did without authority for dual nationality had in possession three valid passports namely Zambian passport number ZN 291038 in her name, a Tanzanian passport number AB307945 in the names of Mwasakandu Rose Gwekabini Glynn and a Canadian passport number WS161821 in the names of Ndiaye Rosemary all with passport photos impressed on them.

Magistrate Banda further set November 1, 2012 for mention and commencement of trial on November 20 while Mwasakandu will be remanded in police custody.
