Striker Lottie Phiri says he has rejoined Zesco United with the aim of helping the Ndola side win the Super Division league title.
Phiri rejoined Zesco last week and on Saturday propelled his side to the semifinals of the Barclays Cup after scoring a lone goal in the
1-nil victory Konkola Blades.
In an interview with LT Sports, the striker believes the league is still open.
“My aim of joining Zesco is to help them win the league. You know Zesco is a big team. Zesco are just five or six points from the league
leaders (Zanaco),” he said.
Zesco are second on the table with 43 points in 23 games and are five points behind Zanaco.
“It is not over until it’s over. In football you never know, look at what happened last season in the English Premier League. So all we
need to do win all our games as Zesco United,” Phiri said.
“If we work together as a team and keep the team spirit high and trust one another we will lift the badge of the team,” he said.
He also hopped to score more goals at Zesco.
Kitwe-based referee Gladys Lengwe will make history next month when she becomes first Zambia female referee at a continental championship.
Lengwe has been selected to officiate at the 2012 African Women’s championship to be held in Equatorial Guinea from October 29 to November 11.
Lengwe, who also handles Faz Super Division matches, has been on a match official’s roaster for the last 12 years and has handled several senior and junior women’s qualifiers.
“To us the appointment of Gladys to be among the elite referees has not come as a surprise because she has been performing very well in all her assignments,” Faz communications officer Erick Mwanza said at Wednesdays press breifing in Lusaka.
Patriotic Front (PF) national youth chairperson Chishimba Kambwili has with immediate effect directed all PF provincial youth chairpersons to stop issuing statements in the media about justice minister Wynter Kabimba’s duo roles.
“Iam directing all provincial youth chairpersons to stop issuing statements to the press about people who are against Mr Kabimba’s duo roles. There is no problem with him having two positions,” Mr Kambwili
said.
Speaking in an interview in Luanshya, Mr Kambwili who is also minister of youth and sport maintained that there is nothing sinister about Mr Kabimba holding two positions.
He gave an example of himself who was serving as minister of youth and sport as well as PF national chairperson for youths.
“If there is a problem with Mr Kabimba holding two positions then I might as well resign either as minster of youth and sport, or as PF youth chairperson,” he added.
The minister said he had of late noted with a lot of concern that some provincial youth chairpersons had been making allegations in the media about certain figures within the party who were reportedly against the appointment of party secretary general Wynter kabimba as justice minister.
Mr Kambwili said the statements being made by certain youths would make people think that there was division and confusion in the party there by making it porous to the enemies of the party.
“This should be stopped as it will destroy the party will not allow any youths to issue statements anyhow. Whoever will be found issuing such statements will be disciplined. Let this come to an end or else heads will roll,” He added.
He has however advised the youths to follow the right channels when raising issues of concern.

The Private Sector Development Association (PSDA) and the Consumer Trust Society (CUTS) have described the one year economic performance of the Patriotic Front government as positive and impressive.
Both organisations have charged that the economic performance of the country since PF assumed office has been moving on the right track especially for a party that is coming from the opposition and needs to settle down.
Speaking in separate interviews with ZANIS in Lusaka today, PSDA Chairperson Yusuf Dodia said despite the party having under gone few changes at administration level that could have hampered development progress, some success have been scored in the economic sector.
Mr Dodia cited the revision of the minimum wage, increasing of the tax exemption threshold for workers, high copper prices and stable inflation as some of the positives moves that government has under taken in order to improve the living standards of the people in the country.
He explained that the acquisition of the 750 billion US$ is also another indication that good economic management can even attract borrowing from developed countries.
Mr Dodia noted that these initiatives have the possibility of improving the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to about 10 percent.
He has further called on government to also consider expand its economic growth through investing in other key sectors such as the manufacturing and the tourism industry.
Mr Dodia has charged that currently not much has been done by government to tap the potential that the two sectors offer towards contributing to the country’s economic development.
Meanwhile, CUTS International Board Chairperson Love Mtesa has cited the takeover of ZAMTEL and Zambia Railways System as some of the decisions that have shown PF’s
ability to address the challenges of people in the country.
Ambassador Mtesa noted that the receiving of 750 billion of the euro bond is another sign of foreign investment’s trust in the Zambian economy.
He has since advised government to revamp and investment more in the Agricultures sector by increasing farmers subsides.

Zambia Under 20 coach Keagan Mumba is praying that striker Noble Ramsey will be fit for Saturday’s African Youth Championship qualifier against Mali.
Ramsey sustained an injury in a training game on Tuesday at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe where Zambia will host Mali.
Ramsey collided head-on with Ndeke Blades goalkeeper Moses Chola in the warm-up game which the Junior Chipolopolo won by 6-nil.

The head of state described Mama Betty Kaunda as a symbol of Zambia’s pride and decency as the former first lady lived an exemplary life of hard work, sacrifice, dignity and love for the country and its people.
He said that Mama Betty Kaunda leaves a legacy and example of strong family values and unity as she represented dignity of a Zambian mother and will be remembered forever for her exceptional attributes.
President Sata prayed that the Kaunda family takes comfort and solace in the understanding that the entire nation’s thoughts and prayers are with them during this devastating and excruciating period
And The Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) says it is deeply saddened with the passing of former First Lady Mama Betty Kaunda.
MMD President Nevers Mumba said his party has learnt of the passing of Mama Betty Kaunda with deep sadness.
Dr Mumba said God was gracious to the Kaunda family and the Zambian people to have given them one of the most gracious and respectable First Ladies that any nation could have ever asked for.
The MMD leader said in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today that it is the MMD’s prayer for God’s peace and comfort for the Kaunda family during this very difficult time.
“On behalf of the Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD), my wife Florence and on my own behalf, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to first President Dr Kenneth Kaunda and the entire Kaunda family, “he said.
He said the former ruling party stands with the Kaunda family and mourns with them.
Also the United Liberal Party (ULP) president Sakwiba Sikota wished Dr Kaunda and his family God’s guidance and peace during this difficult time of mourning.
“She was always on hand to provide assistance and refuge to any freedom fighters who where pursued by the colonialists and their local collaborators. Mama Betty should be mourned as the Mother of the Nation,” Mr Sikota said
He said in a statement yesterday that ULP recognised the immense efforts Mama Betty involved herself in the struggle for Zambia’s independence.
He said, during her time as First Lady, Mama Betty was never controversial and was always in the back ground appearing at public functions only when it was extremely necessary.
“We recall that as First Lady Mama Betty Kaunda never behaved as though she held a government position. Her conduct was exemplary and at no time did she bring any disrepute to the institution of First Lady,” Mr Sikota said
He urged other First Ladies who would occupy State House to take a leaf from Mama Betty by conducting themselves in a manner that befitted the institution of First Lady of the republic of Zambia.
And The women movement in the country has learnt with deep sorrow, the death of Zambia’s former First Lady Betty Kaunda.
Women for Change Executive Director, Emily Sikazwe has described Mama Kaunda as a resilient, hard working and courageous woman who will be deeply missed not only by the former first family but the entire nation.
Ms. Sikazwe has since called on all political players in the country to, during this trying period for the KK family, put aside their political differences and instead mourn the late Mrs. Kaunda with dignity and honour.
And Non Governmental Organisation Coordinating Council (NGOCC) Chairperson Beatrice Grillo said the demise of the former first lady will leave a huge gap among women despite her preference of maintaining a low profile in governance issues.
Ms. Grillo said the country has more to learn from Mama Kaunda as she was a humble woman who championed peace and unity in the nation not only during the liberation struggle but did so till her death.
Meanwhile, Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) Executive Director, Patricia Ndlovu said Betty Kaunda was an inspiration to her association and women as a whole as she placed great importance towards family life.
Ms. Ndlovu urged the KK family to remain strong and urged the nation to stand by the Kaunda family and console them during this trying period.
Mama Betty Kaunda was born on November 17, 1928 and passed away last evening in Zimbabwe where she was visiting her daughter.

The extra ordinary Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) NEC meeting which met yesterday September 18 has resolved to field a candidate in the Mufumbwe parliamentary constituency by election to be held on November 8, 2012.
Party President Nevers Mumba said that his party remains hopeful that its partners, the UPND and other opposition parties will support the opposition cause by not fielding their own candidates.
Dr Mumba said this will enhance the already good relations that exist amongst the opposition political parties.
He said the MMD’s support for the UPND in both Chongwe and Livingstone is symbolic of the party’s commitment to strengthening opposition bonds and co-operation.
Dr Mumba stated that the future holds great opportunities for the opposition.
The Mufumbwe parliamentary seat fell vacant after the resignation of former Member of Parliament Stephen Masumba from the MMD to join the ruling Patriotic Front.
Meanwhile, Former MMD Mufumbwe Constituency Member of Parliament Stephen Masunba has refuted allegations that he has started campaigning in Mufumbwe ahead of the November 6 parliamentary by elections.
Mr. Masumba described the accusation as false and a sign of desperation from the opposition political parties who he accused of peddling blatant lies against him.
Speaking to ZANIS in a telephone interview in Lusaka today, the former parliamentarian said he was not in Mufumbwe but in Lusaka waiting for the commencement of official campaigns which is slated for October 11, 2012.
Mr. Masumba wondered why the opposition was fond of always crying foul and advised them to stop peddling unfounded speculations which he said do not help them.
He challenged those accusing him of campaigning in Mfumbwe to go and check for him at his house in Lusaka where he is currently staying and prove that he was not in Mufumbwe constituency as alleged.
He stated that there is no way he can start campaigns before the official date set by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).
Mr. Masumba also refuted allegations that his campaign team in the area was dishing out money and Chitenge materials at Katumba in Kizela, Tandiza and Chawama areas.
Some opposition political parties accused Mr. Masumba of having started campaigning publicly in the area when the official period is only from 11thOctober, 2012.

United Party for National Development (UPND) member William Banda has been acquitted for his offence of attempted assault to MUVI television Journalist Lloyd Kapusa.
Mr Banda who appeared today before Lusaka Magistrate Boniface Mwiinga in the company of his lawyer Martha Mushipe pleaded guilty to the offence when the matter came up for plea on September 4, this year.
This is in a matter were Mr Banda was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm contrary to section 248 of the penal code and chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.
However today when the matter came up for commencement of trial, complainant in the case Lloyd Kapusa made an application to court to have the matter withdrawn.
Mr Kapusa told court that he intended to withdraw the matter after carrying wider consultations adding that the media has been in the forefront in preaching peace, forgiveness and reconciliation therefore he saw it fit to forgive Mr Banda.
He further told court that Mr Banda has shown remorse for his action, and did reservedly apologize in person to him, to media organizations and the nation at large.
In passing ruling on the application Magistrate Mwiinga told court that it was the complainants constitutional right to withdraw the matter if they feel so according to the criminal procedural court section 201 and section 8.
Magistrate Mwiinga however told the complainant to inform the court on any conditions that he felt should be attached to the withdrawal.
In response Mr Kapusa told court that he had no conditions to add but that his condition was that of forgiveness.
But Prosecutor Cephas Ng’onga reminded the complainant that the court has every right to refuse the withdrawal if there are no sufficient grounds adding that there had been media reports published in relation to the matter suggesting that the two had meet and that there was an inducement given to the complainant for him to withdraw the matter.
Further Mr Ng’onga asked Mr Kapusa to clarify the statements so that the court could record a pure withdrawal than that of an induced withdrawal.
Mr Kapusa however told court that if such statements where there then the police at which the report suggest they met should have the record but later changed and told court that his withdrawal was merely out of forgiveness.
It was at this point that defence lawyer Martha Mushipe asked court to stop interfering with the complainant’s stance adding that the complainant had stated his reasons and was satisfied to have the matter withdrawn.
Meanwhile Magistrate Mwiinga told both parties that in the interest of justice and reconciliation in accordance with section 201 and section 8 upon which reconciliation were established in the constitution an acquittal can be granted or denied considering the prevalence of such cases in the country.
But he further told court that he had no objection but to guarantee an acquittal to the defendant.
This is in a matter where it was alleged that Mr Banda on August 22, this year did assault Lloyd Kapusa thereby occasioning bodily harm when he was filming at Woodlands police station when Mr Banda was being interrogated by government joint investigation team for been in possession of properties suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Gerald Phiri participated in the just ended London 2012 Olympic games and qualified for the Semi-Finals of the mens 100 metres by running 10.16 seconds in his round 1 heat and coming 3rd, in doing so running a season’s best, he then went on to the semi-finals and ran 10.11 another seasons best but came 5th, outside the qualifying spots for the final.
KAPA187: Tell us about yourself.
GERALD PHIRI : Well…my name is Gerald Phiri, I am the Zambian record holder in the 100m and 200m (10.06 and 20.29sec). I was born at Ndola Central Hospital on October 6, 1988. I lived in Zambia for a few years before my family migrated and we eventually found ourselves in Great Britain where I grew up. In May I graduated from Texas A&M University and I recently moved to Orlando, Florida where I now train with my new coach, Lance Brauman (who also coaches Tyson Gay- the 2nd fastest man in history at 9.69sec)
KAPA187: How did you get started in athletics and what made you take it up seriously.
GERALD PHIRI : My Physical Education teacher discovered me at sports day in 2002 when I was in grade 8. It was not until I won English School’s Championships in 2003 when I began to realize that I was kind of good at it. I have since won numerous titles in the UK and USA where I showed that I was one of the best up and coming talents in the sport and I decided to take it up seriously to see how far I can go.
KAPA187: Who motivates you, both in life and in athletics?
GERALD PHIRI : As far as athletics is concerned, I look up to Tyson Gay because of his hard work and determination to be the best. Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt are also great sources of motivation. They are amazing athletes and hopefully one day I’ll ascend to that level in the sport.
In everyday life my family is a big motivation to me. They are always there to encourage and support me and I want them to be proud of me as a man both on and off the athletics track.
KAPA187: How was your experience at the 2012 London Olympic games?
GERALD PHIRI : Overall I was pleased with my first Olympic experience. It was exactly what I expected it to be as far as how well it was organized and I also had the opportunity to meet many great people and athletes from all over the world. My only disappointment was the cost of tickets for my family to get into the stadium to watch me run.
KAPA187: How did you get yourself prepared for your event ,mentally and physically?
GERALD PHIRI : Physically the Olympics was just another competition on my calendar. I trained with my coach and training partners in Amsterdam while we got used to the weather and time difference in Europe. Mentally, my coach helped me relax and we focused more so on making sure my body was healthy. I knew if I was healthy I would go into the games with confidence.
KAPA187: Reaching the semi-finals of the men’s 100m was a great achievement, how did it feel running against the likes of Usian Bolt.
GERALD PHIRI : When I line up I don’t think about this person and that person. I focus on what my coach has taught me and give my best effort. It’s always great to race against the best though, that’s how you bring out the best in yourself.
KAPA187: You placed 5th in that race with a good time of 10.11 seconds, which is .05 away from your personal best. Were you satisfied with your performance?
GERALD PHIRI : I was very disappointed with my performance at the Games. My goal was to make it to the finals and unfortunately I failed. I made some small errors in my technique which hampered my performances but you live and learn and I’ll try my best to ensure I don’t make the same mistakes next time. When you have 80,000 people in the stadium it’s not easy to stay composed especially when you are carrying your whole country’s hopes on your back… it’s very hard.
KAPA187: Were you satisfied with the support you got from Zambia?
GERALD PHIRI : Well that depends on what kind of support we are talking about. As far as encouragement and kind words, I received a lot of Facebook messages and some emails from my fans in Zambia and it was very nice and motivating to see that people recognized my achievements. I want to personally say thank you to everyone who supported me throughout the games.
Financially speaking I receive NO financial support from Zambia. I am in the top 15 in the world and I’m Africa’s number #1 sprinter. It costs a lot of money to become the best in the world I have to pay my coach, medical expenses, travel expenses (I have to fly all over the world for competitions), food, rent and other bills such as electricity. When you are a full time athlete it is very difficult to afford all the expenses because it’s your only job and source of income and I wish I had support to help me pay for some of my expenses. People don’t understand the financial burden that comes with being a full-time athlete. Usain Bolt for example has a net worth of $20.6million so obviously he is able to afford all the expenses needed to stay on top of the world rankings. Bigger countries have a lot of money invested in sports and it’s no surprise that they are doing so well.. If I was to run for Great Britain (where I grew up) at the next Olympics, I would be making 4-5times as much money as I make right now. If Zambia is serious about winning medals they need to invest in sports, you don’t wake up one day and think you’ll go out there and win a gold medal.
KAPA187: This year Zambia had a small team going into the Olympics, what do you think needs to be done in order to have a larger representation in 2016.
GERALD PHIRI: There’s a need to invest a lot of money in sports. At the grass roots level there’s a need to develop a solid program that will help identify the best local talent from a young age. 2016 is only 4years away and there’s also a need to find athletes in the 18years and older category who will be able to represent Zambia well in Rio. It’s also very important that these athletes are supported financially so they can develop to a standard where they will be able to do more than just show up at the Olympics. Making the Olympics is not difficult we want our representatives to be a force to be reckoned with. Athletes need to be supported and developed starting today. You don’t wake up one day in 2016 and just expect spontaneous results from athletes. Let’s support and develop athletes starting today… it takes many years of training and development in order to be a great athlete. On top of that Coaches are a big component of success, we need to develop our coaches who will be guiding the athletes through the next Olympics. Personally I believe we need to hire people from other countries that are doing well such as Kenya, USA, etc. and have them help us build solid infrastructure then train Zambians to take over and sustain this new system. There’s a reason why these countries are consistently successful at the international level, why are we not using their expertise to build solid foundation in Zambia?
KAPA187: While at the Olympics did you get an opportunity to watch any other sport apart from athletics?
GERALD PHIRI: Unfortunately I was only able to watch other sports on TV. Maybe next time.
KAPA187: Are you taking part in any athletic competitions in the near future?
GERALD PHIRI: I just finished my 2012 season. I will not have any more competitions until April or May 2013.
KAPA187: What words of encouragement do you have for young up and coming athletes in Zambia?
GERALD PHIRI: I’d just encourage them to hold on to their dreams and don’t let anyone tell them that they can’t achieve their goals. What God has for you is for you, no man can take it away! Work hard, and stay focused!
KAPA187: What other hobbies do you have, and is there anything your fans will be surprised to know about you?
GERALD PHIRI: In my spare time I like to spend time with my friends and family, I watch TV or listen to music… Once in a while I’ll play around on a piano. I also play with my dog and video games.
I guess there’s a lot about me that my fans don’t know… 5 things are:
A. I want to be a successful restaurant owner and chef when my athletics career is over.
B. I have lived in 4 different countries (Zambia, South Africa, UK and USA).
C. I can compete for Great Britain and USA if I opt to do so.
D. I want to visit Egypt one day. I want to see the pyramids with my own eyes. There’s a lot of history there.
E. I briefly played semi-professional football when I lived in the UK.
KAPA187: Any last words…
GERALD PHIRI: Zambia has the potential to be a force in the world of sports but a serious initiative in needed to develop coaches and athletes. We need to make sports a part of the culture.

His Excellency Mr Rupiah Bwezani Banda, the Fourth President of the Republic of Zambia, has described the death of former First Lady Mama Betty Kaunda as a sad chapter in Zambia’s history.
This is contained in a statement issued to the media by Mikatazo Wakumelo Administrative Assistant in the office of the Fourth Republican President.
President Banda has also urged all Zambians to honour the late Mama Kaunda by emulating her patience, love and tolerance, attributes that made her a loyal companion of her husband and Zambia’s founding President Kenneth Kaunda for 66 years.
The former Head of State says, having known the Kaunda’s for over 50 years, he is deeply touched by Mama’s Kaunda’s demise and it is his prayer that Dr Kaunda, the Kaunda family and the entire nation will be granted God’s strength to bear the burden of death.
“Mama Kaunda was a mother to all of us. She has been unwell for a long time and it was always our desire that she would be healed. But it is sad that it has come to this. Indeed, our plans are not God’s plans.
“On behalf of my wife, my family and indeed on my own behalf, it is my wish that all Zambians will mourn our departed former First Lady with dignity and abundant love,” President Banda says.
