Tourism can be a job creation catalyst in Zambia

A man displays his catch from Kabompo River

By J.Sakala
The tourism board or ministry should deliberately attach some of its employees on learning mission to Nations which have succeeded in making tourism their main stem of the economy.Countries like Cuba,Thailand,Brazil,Gambia etc

Zambia’s biggest tourist attraction is the Sun.

All our seasons have conducive weather and this is our biggest asset as people in lands that are devoid of good weather will do anything to get to the Sun.We need to market the sun.

We have the rivers, the lakes, natural caves, national game parks,Victoria falls, traditional ceremonies etc.We need to invest in water sports, looking at every activity the tourist would enjoy with our Rivers. We need to attract tangible partnerships including government partnerships with multi national companies to galvanise tourism.

The Zambian People

Our people are another treasured asset to tourism in Zambia. We are some of the most friendliest people on earth.Being amongst Zambians is an experience one treasures for life.A visit to a typical Zambian village for a European is a tourist attraction in itself and they would pay for it.

Why haven’t we developed the tourism sector to the level that it becomes one of the major employers in the country?

Zambia an Expensive Destination

Some of the reasons are that today Zambia still ranks as one of the most expensive places to travel to and visit compared to other parts of the world. We have disjointed arrangements for tourists.Even with new airlines coming on board:Emirates,KLM etc it is still expensive and you must be very rich to consider Zambia as your holiday destination from Europe.

The more people visit the country the better,we must maximise on the numbers visiting. For example for the average cost of £700 for a return ticket to Zambia from Europe one would go on a 7-10 days all inclusive holiday to the Caribbean ,Thailand,America or other European countries.

Why we aren’t Winning

We need to look at what makes the Zambian tourism so expensive even though it could be the destination of a life time. The flight to the Caribbean will take you the same hours as to Zambia,so why the difference?

Tourism all over the world is package advertised.Road show advertising and by word of mouth is good but does not always reach a wider scale of people.Hence there is need for our Government to engage travel agents in Europe,America,Australia etc and package tourism.

File: Assorted Zambian crafts for sale at the Lusaka Sunday Market

For example if one buys a ticket for K10,000,000 it should enable them to get a flight to Zambia, airport transfer, stay at a hotel or lodge for a specific period of time.Could be Bed and Breakfast, half board or all inclusive depending on pricing.

The tourist should have activities lined up for the period of stay on a day today basis which they could pay from their pocket allowing in foreign exchange.Packaging involves talking to all people involved eg airlines, hotels or lodges, transporters, farmers etc

Unless we package tourism it will not enhance job creation. It will not blossom. We need to co-ordinate tourism. Its a money spinning industry that can surpass any industry in Zambia and can be an answer to the current un employment problem.

Many a Tourist dislike hidden costs-surprise costs.A tourist would like to pay for a package and budget for an amount that they can spend without many surprises.

A well packaged tourism will grow the other sectors of our economy as well, farming will grow as they will be great demand for farm produce in hotels and guest houses. The transport sector will grow, crafts demand etc Tourism can definitely galvanise the economy all round.

A lesson from Cuba

Cuba after the fall of communism in Russia which was their major source of income through trade made a bold decision to boost tourism.Fidel Castro went into partnership with the Canadian companies to boost tourism. They built hotels, lodges and brought in Transtour buses in abundance. They went flat out to market their tourism all over the world.Today Cuba can boast of the Tourist industry employing 45 % of its people.Being a communist country it has opened up other industries as well, like agriculture as more produce has got to be produced to feed the industry.Teachers and other Professionals are being engaged as tour guides for tourists. If we are serious about tourism we need to learn the lessons from Cuba.

What we need to do

  1. We need to have our own airline. There have been pronouncements of bringing back a national airline. If we are following through our pronouncement then we are on the right path.A national airline is an asset in packaging tourism.
  2. We need to sort out our road network to be efficient and safe.Tourists like safe and efficient roads. If we did sort out our rail line to a high standard that travel is quick,we would enhance our capacity.
  3. These are some of the things we need to table with our chinese partners, sort out our ancient railways.
I must say there is so much to see in Zambia than in Cuba and most of these other countries. If we did the right things the tourism sector would employ half the population of Zambia.
  4. Ever imagine the disused mines and even the active copper mines being a tourism magnet? The state house tunnels that were exposed in Chiluba era?The beaches in Samfya,Kasaba Bay?Our traditional ceremonies,National Parks etc Zambia is a Tourist gem.
  5. We need to invest so much in that which gives us the identity as Zambians and we need to be proud of being Zambian.Tourists enjoy visiting a country whose people are so proud.
  6. We need to promote our culture.Small things that we think do not matter are the things that the tourist would like to see.Our crafts, our food etc Hey need I not say we need a Chipolopolo museum at Patrick Levy Mwanawasa stadium in Ndola and a FAZ shop?its a tourist attraction as well.
  7. We must make it a point that we promote what is Zambian when tourists come.A Zambian cuisine,a Zambian Beer,Maheu etc
  8. Orderliness is very very important if we have to promote tourism. We also need to conform to the culture of the people we invite.Honest, punctuality, politeness etc these are the ingredients of tourism.Tourism is self Marketing, the people that come will tell others.
We need to learn the lessons and as we look around for what can build our economy I put my finger on tourism.

Olympic workout : Build muscle with Olympic lifts

3

Forget the dodgy leotards and endless gurning; Olympic weightlifting is a very serious sport. The current world-record holder for the clean and jerk, Iran’s Hossein Rezazadeh, owns that coveted title because he lifted a ground-shaking 263.5kg.

These guys are very strong, and almost unrivalled in their power-to-weight ratio. “In this sport, speed is just as important as strength,” says Team GB’s head weight lifting coach Tamas Feher. And even if you’re not interested in entering the 2016 Olympics, this type of training is one of the fastest ways to achieve a strong, muscular physique. “An Olympic lifter’s body is a powerful one, and certainly looks it too,” says Feher.

Your programme

A study in the Canadian Journal of Applied Sport Science found that after eight weeks of Olympic lifting, participants increased their lean muscle mass by 4% and dropped 6% of their body fat. Our plan promises the same and more. Start with Week 1’s workout – created by strength coach Ian Mellis to condition your body for the demands of Olympic lifts. Then over the next three weeks follow the prescribed sessions, billing up to the main event.

Week 1 – 50% 1RM

Week 2 – 60% 1RM

Week 3 – 70% 1RM

Week 4 – 70-90% 1RM

Week 1: Strength and support

Perform this session 3 times, with a rest day between each. Do 5 sets of 5 reps of each exercise, resting 20sec between sets and 60sec between exercises. Aim to shift around 50% of your 1-rep max (1RM).

Kettlebell swings

This move strengthens your lower back – essential for heavy lifts. Stand with a kettlebell between your legs. Drive your hips forward to swing the weight up. Ben your knees as it swings back between your legs.

Dumbbell squat to curl

This builds the power you need to get that bar up to your chest. Squat until your thighs are parallel to the floor, then curl the dumbbells to shoulder height as you stand.

Squat jump

“Acceleration is key for lifting,” says Mellis. “Squat jumps improve power generation through the body.” Squat, then press up through your heels and toes, launching into the air. Land with your knees slightly bent.

Dumbbell push-press

This move will address any strength imbalances between your arms. Rest the weights on your shoulders, bend your knees, then explosively press the weights overhead.

Week 2: Beginner compound moves

You now need to prep your body for specific areas of the lifts. Follow the same plan as for Week 1 (5 sets of 5 reps each), but aim to use 60% of your 1RM.

Goblet squat

This is the foundation of a strong front squat. Grab one end of a dumbbell with both hands and hold it under your chin, palms facing up. Bend your hips and knees until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Then slowly rise back up.

Box jump

“This replicates the central move of the lifts,” says Mellis. Squat slightly in front of a secure box. Jump onto it, swinging your arms forward. Land with your knees bent. Perform continually for 1min, instead of the usual 5 reps.

Upright row

Stand holding a pair of dumbbells in front of your thighs. Raise the weights straight up, keeping your palms close to your body until they’re just below your chin. Pause, go up onto your toes then return to the start.

Military press

“This trains you for the press phase,” says Mellis. Grab a barbell with an overhand grip and hold it across your shoulders. Bend your knees and push the bar above your head, locking your arms.

Week 3: Advanced compound moves

Perfect these exercises before you attempt the main lifts. Again, do 5 sets of 5 reps for each move, this time using 70% 1RM.

Romanian dead lift

Bend to pick up the barbell with an overhand grip. Use your thighs to raise the bar and straighten your legs. Lower the weight down to just in front of your shins. Straighten up, pushing forward with your hips.

Weighted box jump

“It’s explosive strength that gets the bar off the floor,” says Mellis. Perform the move as per the instructions for Week 3, except this time hold a weight plate or dumbbell in each hand. If 70% 1RM is too much, go lighter.

Clean

This is where it all comes together. Bend to pick up the barbell. Keep your chest high and drive up through your heels. When it reaches hip-height, shrug your shoulders to pull the bar in front of your chest. Rest it above your collarbone.

Front squat

“Here’s where the power comes from to lift the bar over your head,” says Mellis. Rest a barbell on your shoulders. Sink into a deep squat, then push up to the start position. Tense your glutes throughout to achieve maximum output.

Week 4: The grand finale

Feeling the benefits of your training doesn’t require months of hard slog. With 3 lifting sessions each week you can pack on 6kg of lean muscle in just 8 weeks. For muscle building, perform 3 sets of 8 reps at 70% 1RM. For strength and power, aim for 2 sets of 2 reps at 80-90% 1RM.

The clean and jerk: step one

A
Squat down behind a barbell and grab it with a shoulder-width overhand grip. Keep your arms extended fully – this forces your upper-back muscles to pull the bar up.

B
Drive upwards with your legs, lifting the bar. When it reaches thigh height, pull your shoulders back, bend your knees, rotate your wrists and catch the bar with your palms facing upwards.

Clean and jerk: step two

C
Now push back up through the balls of your feet to stand up straight with the bar resting across the top of your chest. Take a breath and get ready for the final phase of the lift.

D
Bend the knees then explode upwards, pressing the bar overhead. At the same time, put one leg forward and one back to aid the overhead press. Walk your feet together, champion.

The snatch: step one

A
Stand behind the bar with your feet just wider than shoulder-width apart, shins touching the bar. Drop down and grab the bar with a very wide overhand grip, arms completely straight. Get ready to explode up.

B
Keeping your chest high, your back straight and head up, push upwards through your heels to stand. Keep the bar as close to your legs as possible throughout the movement until it reaches your thighs.

The snatch: step two

C
Now, pull your shoulders back and bring the bar up fast, flipping it over onto your fingers. Swoop underneath the bar by dropping into an overhead squat position, as shown. Now for the final push.

D
Press up through your heels, until your legs are straight, keeping the bar locked-out over your head throughout. Congratulations: this technical move is a true test of your coordination and strength.

NGOCC demands HH apology

UPND president Hakainde Hichilema
UPND president Hakainde Hichilema

The Non Governmental Organizations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has demanded the arrest of former UPND National Youth Chairman Joe Kalusa’s for threatening to organize party youth on the Copperbelt to gang-rape FDD leader Edith Nawakwi in order to teach her to respect married men like UPND Hakainde Hichilema.

The women movement has also demanded that UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema retract his recent statement and apologize to Ms. Nawakwi and the nation at large for his sexiest attacks on the female gender.

NGOCC Chairperson Beatrice Grillo in a statement released to QFM News the media reports attributed to Kalusa are retrogressive not only to the democracy of the nation but also towards the fight against gender based violence and in particular violence against women.

Ms Grillo says Kalusa’s threats are a danger not only to Ms. Nawakwi but to society at large.

She says it is shameful for a public figure and supposedly future leader to engage him-self in acts of perpetuating violence against the female gender.

Ms Grillo adds that differences in opinions should not be the basis for threatening violence as amicable ways of resolving difference should always be sought.

She appeals and urges the youths in the political parties not to be used as tools of violence stating that the Zambian youths have much more to offer to the country than being brainwashed into violence.

She says NGOCC calls upon Kalusa as a matter of urgency to apologize to Ms. Nawakwi and the women of Zambia for the anguish caused by his careless threats.

Ms Grillo states that as the women’s movement, they have listened and read with dismay over the recent days unwarranted attacks on the FDD leader, adding that the unfolding tension between Ms. Nawakwi and Mr. Hichilema is a source of concern and unfortunate especially that it is has deteriorated to the use of unpalatable language.

She says NGOCC is of the view that the two leaders have a lot to offer and should therefore engage in dialogue in order to find a lasting resolve to their differences rather than insulting each other in the media.

Ms Grillo further states that it is NGOCC’s considered view that Mr. Hichilema sexiest attacks are uncalled for and should not be tolerated in this day and era given the fact that Zambia as a country has ratified various protocols and conventions on the elimination of violence against women.

Church will not rest until justice prevails over the deportation Catholic Priest-Bishop Lungu

Bishop George Lungu (R)

CHIPATA Diocese Bishop George Lungu has said the Church will not rest until justice prevails over the deportation of Lundazi Catholic Parish Priest father Viateur Banyangadora.

Speaking during a homily to cerebrate the 75th Anniversary of Chipata Diocese held at St Anne Cathedral in Chipata yesterday, Bishop Lungu reiterated that the Church would not rest until the Government revokes the deportation of its clergy for the sake of unity.

The prelate who did not want to dwell much on the deportation of Fr Banyangadora alleging that the issue was “still hot” only reminded the Catholic faithful during the celebrations that the church would not rest until justice prevailed on the matter.

“I would like to inform you that the Church will not rest until justice prevails on the deportation of Fr Banyangadora for the sake of unity. I do not want to dwell much on this issue because it is still a “hot issue”, but I can assure you that the church will not rest until justice prevail on the matter,” he said.

Last month, a combined team of security wings apprehended Fr Banyangadora, 40, a priest of Rwandanese origin from his residence in connection with the sermon he delivered in church during a homily which was allegedly seen to have been in the spirit of inciting people to rise against the Government.

The clergyman was later transferred to Lusaka for further interrogations before being deported.

Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu announced few days later that Fr Banyangadora, who was a holder of employment Permit No 008955, was deported to Rwanda because he was found to be a danger to the peace and good order, contrary to Section 39(2) of the immigration and Deportation Act No 18 of 2010.

Bishop Lungu said the Government violated human and constitutional rights of their priest despite him being in possession of a Rwandanse passport.

Meanwhile, Bishop Lungu has said the Catholic Church is saddened with reports that some Catholic pupils in other mission schools were being mistreated.

“The Church is disturbed with some reports that some catholic pupils in other mission schools were being mistreated by school authorities. We hear that sometimes rosaries are confiscated from these pupils by school authorities without any proper explanation,” he said.

Bishop Lungu said the other mission school authorities should tolerate other religions in their mission schools just like the Catholic tolerated non-Catholic pupils learning in Catholic schools.

Western Province needs to reduce its extreme poverty by 26 % to meet MDG-UN Country Rep

20
Nalolo Member of Parliament Inonge Wina visits her constituency and inspects school infrastructure and staff accommodation.

UN Country Representative, Kanni Wignaraja, says Western Province needs to reduce its extreme poverty by 26 per cent in order to attain the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target on extreme poverty by 2015.

Ms Wignaraja said though national poverty figures are falling slowly, the poverty levels in Western Province still remain a challenge as shown in the Zambia Human Development Report from 80.3 per cent in 2006 to 80.4 per cent in 2010.

She was speaking in Mongu yesterday when she presented the Zambia Human Development Report for 2011 on Service Delivery for sustainable human development at Country Lodge.

And Western Province Permanent Secretary, Bert Mushala, has requested for cooperating partners, particularly the UNDP, to assist in contributing to strengthening the capacities of planning units.

Mr Mushala noted that development planning plays a pivotal role in service delivery and ultimately sustainable development, hence the need to put in place mechanisms that will help to gauge the performance against the agreed service delivery standards.

He observed that without fundamentally result-oriented development, it would be impossible for agendas to move forward and challenged all to peruse gender responsive, evidence and human rights based developmental programmes.

Western Province Police Deputy Commissioner Lombe Kamukoshi disclosed the development to ZANIS in Mongu yesterday afternoon.

Ms Kamukoshi said Chazele was arrested around 15:00 hours in Mwandi village of Kalabo district where he has been hiding after police launched a manhunt for him following the tearing up of about 500 copies of the Draft Constitution booklets in Mongu two weeks ago.

She said at the time of his arrest, Chazele was found chairing a meeting in a house at a village located 40 kilomitres from Kalabo Boma.

Ms Kamukoshi further said that Chazele will be jointly charged with the 15 other Barotseland activists currently undergoing trail in Kaoma district for alleged malicious damage and conduct likely to cause the breach of peace.

On 6th September this year, a group of unruly Barotse royalists tore up about 500 copies of Silozi draft constitution booklets in front of Mongu District Commissioner stressing that Western Province was no longer a part of Zambia hence there was no need to participate in the ongoing constitution making process.

Two Pros Join Zambia Under-20 Camp

4

The Zambia Under-20 team has been beefed up by two foreign-based players.

Sweden based youngster Peter Mulenga and his DR Congo counterpart Simon Kapengwe have joined camp in Kitwe ahead of Saturday’s 2013 African Youth Championship qualifier against Mali.

Coach Keagan Mumba revealed that Mulenga of Swedish side BK Hacken and Kapengwe from TP Mazembe joined camp on Sunday and took part in the Monday work out at Kitwe’s Arthur Davies Stadium the venue for the crucial qualifier.

“The players arrived yesterday (Sunday),Simon Kapengwe from TP Mazembe and Peter Mulenga of BK Hacken in Sweden and today they are part of training,” Mumba said.

Mumba disclosed that he has dropped Suwilanji Mwabala of Danish side Kolding FC.

“We have released Suwilanji. He needs more time, he is a good player,” he added.

Mumba declared the Junior Chipolopolo injury free ahead of the second round, first leg match.
“We are lucky that we don’t have injuries. Lubambo Musonda of National Assembly who had a calf injuy is back in training.”

Weekend Scorecard: Saileti Set Top 6 Finish For Nkana

3

Nkana coach Zeddy Saileti has set a top six target at the end of the season.

This follows Sundays 2-1 win over Green eagles that saw the record 11-time league champions enter the top 8 bracket of the 2012 Faz Super Division for the first time this season.

“We have to finish in the top six,” Saileti said.

“The way we are playing we have improved so much and now deserve to be in the top six.”
Nkana have never failed to finish inside the top 7 since returning to the Super Division in 2010.

Since Saileti’s predecessor and close friend Linos Makwaza was fired after losing 3-1 to Red Arrows on July 21, Nkana have lost just once with two draws and five wins and are now unbeaten in two games.

Nkana’s form is in total contrast to period between April 14 and July 21 when they could only muster nine draws and three losses that led to Makwaza’s departure.

“It is big surprise but being in a coach in football you have to go through many things and I think that was just a passing phase but when we got the winning formula everything has been going well,” Saileti said.

Zambia does not need Eurobond-HH

Hakainde Hichilema
Hakainde Hichilema

UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has condemned government’s decision to borrow USD 750 million Eurobond.

Mr. Hichilema stated that there is nothing for the PF government to be excited about following the successful issuance of the bond.

He said Zambia does not need to borrow from private lenders adding that the PF government could have generated more than USD 1 billion from the mining windfall tax in two fiscal years.

“In one fiscal year, Mwanawasa raised over USD 400 million, with today’s copper price, Zambia could raise over USD 600 million from the windfall and the increased mineral loyalty taxes and that is close to the USD 750 million they are singing about,” Mr. Hichilema said.  [pullquote]“In one fiscal year, Mwanawasa raised over USD 400 million, with today’s copper price, Zambia could raise over USD 600 million from the windfall and the increased mineral loyalty taxes and that is close to the USD 750 million they are singing about,” Mr. Hichilema said.[/pullquote]

Mr. Hichilema advised the government to explore other prudent ways of mobilizing capital for infrastructural projects than rushing to the Euro market.

He warned that Zambia will quickly get into a debt trap which will negate all the gains the country has made following the HIPC debt relief.

Mr. Hichilema also cautioned PF leaders against reckless borrowing and mortgaging the future of the country.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) vice president for administration Richard Kapita has also disclosed to the media that the Zambia Police Service has once again denied the UPND a permit to hold a rally in Mongu district this week.

This is the fourth time the Zambia police service is denying the UPND a permit to hold a public rally after the canceled Kanyama and Chawama rallies in Lusaka.

Mr. Kapita has noted that the security concerns being raised by the police have nothing to do with the UPND planned rally.

He has appealed to Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba to intervene in the matter. Mr. Kapita said that the UPND will not allow the Zambia Police Service to continue denying them an opportunity to interact with the people at grassroots level.

Meanwhile,GET Involved Zambia Executive Director Father Frank Bwalya has said that he was saddened the actions of police who had continued to deny the United Party for National Development (UPND) a permit to hold its public rallies in Lusaka.

Fr Bwalya said it was unconstitutional for the police to deny UPND with permits adding that the denial could create a bad image of all good developments that PF was achieving.

“It’s sad my heart bleeds to see police denying UPND with a permit. PF is doing a lot of good things for the country but the issue of trying
to block UPND from holding its rallies is not good,” Father Bwalya said
