Avap calls for printing of ballot papers locally

2

A civil society organisation has called on Government to pump money in Government Printers to enable the printing firm to print ballot papers.

Anti Voter Apathy Project (AVAP) Executive Director Richwell Mulwani said Government Printers has the potential to print ballot papers if it is funded adequately.

Mr Mulwani told Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the company has in the previous printed important documents which demonstrates its capacity of printing ballot papers as well.

He said Zambia has set a good example in the region through conducting peaceful and free elections hence the need for the country to consider printing ballot papers locally.

Mr Mulwani noted that the printing of ballot papers locally would increase credibility of holding elections and reduce suspicions among political players.

He said the development could also promote transparency in the printing process and give political players an opportunity to monitor the process.

Mr Mulwani also added that the move to print ballot papers locally will greatly assist in reducing cost of having them printed in South Africa.

He wondered why the Election Commission of Zambia (ECZ) should continue printing ballot papers outside the country when the country has the capacity to print the ballot papers locally.

Mr Mulwani said it is high time the local printing firm was empowered unlike empowering foreign printing firms.

He further called on the government to consider funding Government Printers so that the institution is able to print the 2016 general elections.

Katele Kalumba’s remarks can’t be taken seriously-Mabenga

THE Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) says it does not take negative remarks made by its former national secretary Katele Kalumba about the party seriously.

MMD national secretary Michael Mabenga said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the former ruling party does not pay attention to Dr Kalumba’s statements because he is not in the administrative structure of the party.

Mr Mabenga was reacting to Dr Kalumba’s statement that MMD’s loss in the Msanzala parliamentary by-election is a reflection of a structural collapse in the former ruling party.

“Dr Katele Kalumba is nowhere near the administrative structure of our party. We don’t take his comments seriously,” he said.
The MMD, which fielded Peter Daka in the Msanzala parliamentary by-election, lost the seat to the Patriotic Front candidate Joseph Lungu.

On Saturday, Dr Kalumba said the MMD’s loss in the Msanzala parliamentary by-election is an indication that the former ruling party’s structures had collapsed.

Dr Kalumba advised Mr Daka to take comfort in the knowledge that the electoral loss is not his personal failure, but a reflection of a collapse in MMD structures.

He said it is unfortunate that Mr Daka did not win the election despite the fact that he was contesting the seat for the second time, after the September 20 tripartite elections.

Dr Kalumba warned that unless the structural collapse of the MMD is addressed, the former ruling party may not win future elections.

Meanwhile, the MMD in Luapula has directed its district executive committees to begin consultations for a successor to take over from former president Rupiah Banda.

MMD Luapula province chairman Emmanuel Chungu said in an interview from Mansa yesterday that he has given the district executive committee up to the end of this month to conclude the consultations.

“All the names of the candidates who have declared their intentions to stand and their profiles have been submitted. By mid-March, I will be meeting the district leadership to consolidate their findings,” Mr Chungu said.

He said it is important for the MMD to consult widely so that the former ruling party can come up with a party president who will be accepted by all.

“We want to get to the branches through the districts because they are the ones who will campaign for the party,” Mr Chungu said.
He said the MMD in Luapula is not restricting consultations to bona fide members but the process also involves political parties, churches and non-governmental organisations.

“We are consulting all political parties, including the governing party because we believe that the candidate must be acceptable to all,” Mr Chungu said.

UPND will not be pressurised into holding a national convention-Kakoma

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) says it will not be pressurised into holding a national convention because the current leadership is still legally in office.

UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma said in Lusaka yesterday that the party has no immediate plans to hold a convention because the current leadership is legitimate.

According to Article 53 of the UPND constitution, a general assembly is supposed to meet every five years. Article 75 says the president of the party shall be elected by the General Assembly every five years.

The UPND last held a convention which elected leaders, including party president Hakainde Hichilema, in 2006.

And Article 79 says: “A party president shall be eligible for election for an indefinite period subject to the constitution provided that a party president who is elected republican president shall only serve two terms which shall run concurrently with the term of office as republican president.”

“There is nothing illegal about the current leadership and that they will continue in office until the next leaders are chosen,” Mr Kakoma said.

Mr Kakoma said the party will hold its convention at the right time and that at the moment, the convention is not a priority.
He said the UPND will focus on re-organising itself to be stronger.

“We are not under pressure to hold a convention but we will hold one when we are ready. Right now we are focusing on re-organising the party,” he said.

Mr Kakoma said the UPND is a democratic party and that at an appropriate time, the public will be informed when the convention will be held.

He said it may not be soon but a convention will take place as per party constitution.

He said what is important now is to re-organise the party and not to be pressurised about when to hold a convention.

Power Dynamos Breeze Past Japan Actuel

11

Power Dynamos announced their return to Caf club cup competition after a nine-year absence with a bang.

The Arthur Davies side beat Japan Actuel of Madagascar 5-1 away on Sunday afternoon in the two sides Caf Champions League preliminary round, first leg match in Antananarivo.

Midfielder Mukuka Mulenga scored a brace in starting in the 15th minute that gave Power a 1-0 halftime lead.

Mulenga completed his brace on the hours mark after finishing off a Kennedy Mudenda cross before Simon Bwalya made it 3-0 five minutes later.

55th minute substitute Nyaende who had replaced ineffective new boy Graven Chitalu added Power’s fourth in the 70ths minute.

Mario Baraki got Actuel’s only goal of the game a minute later but Nyaende made sure of Power’s emphatic away victory two minutes from fulltime to take comfortable lead into the return leg match on march 3 in Kitwe.

The result puts Power on course for a first round meeting against four-time African champions TP Mazembe in a first leg match on March 24 in Kitwe.

The DR Congo giants are on a preliminary round bye.

Chipungu praises Judiciary for exhibiting high levels of professionalism and impartiality

MMD RUFUNSA Member of Parliament Kenneth Chipungu (l) accompanied by a sympathizers leave High Court after his petition hearing in Lusaka

MMD Rufunsa Member of Parliament Kenneth Chipungu has praised the Judiciary for exhibiting high levels of professionalism and impartiality in the manner they are handling election petitions.

And Mr Chipungu has advised politicians to desist from politics of bitterness saying such politicians are wasting their time and risk going into political oblivion.

Mr Chipungu who is former Sports, Youth and Child Development Minister in the Rupiah Banda administration told ZANIS in an interview today that the Judiciary needs a lot of encouragement from the public.

He said the Judiciary has proved beyond any reasonable doubt that it is independent from the other arm of government (the Executive) and contrary to suggestions from some section of society that the election petitions were politically motivated to weaken the opposition.

Mr Chipungu who is also MMD National Executive Committee (NEC) member and Trustee explained that the courts of law are basing their judgement on the merits of the petition not on political party affiliation.

He stated that this is evident by a number of petitions that were lodged by losing candidates and have since been dismissed by the courts of law based on facts presented in court by the petitioners.

And Mr Chipungu has advised politicians to desist from politics of bitterness saying such politicians are wasting their time and risk going into political oblivion.

Mr Chipungu said politicians that lost in the 2011 tripartite elections should give chance to winners to fulfill their electoral pledges to the voters.

He observed that it will not do for any politician to oppose anything that government does or an Area MP does just to frustrate development in the country.

Mr Chipungu pointed out that the country needs men and women of integrity who can take the country forward and better the welfare of ordinary Zambians.

He pledged to work closely with the new government and the private sector and lobby for development in his constituency for the benefit of the people.

Recently, the Lusaka High Court dismissed the election petition that was jointly filled by losing PF and UPND candidates in the 2011 tripartite elections challenging the election of Mr Chipungu as MP for Rufunsa Constituency in Chongwe district of Lusaka Province.

PF leadership dismayed by Chiefs’ stance on districts re-alignment

Minister for Southern Province Miles Sampa
Minister for Southern Province Miles Sampa

The leadership of the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) in Choma, Kalomo and Sinazongwe districts says it is deeply concerned with the hardline position taken by chiefs in the province to oppose the re-alignment of Chirundu and Itezhi-Tezhi districts.

The party is also disturbed that the opposition United Party for National Development(UPND) is mobilizing support within the province to reject Provincial Minister Miles Sampa.

This is according to resolutions of a consultative meeting for PF leaders from the three districts released to ZANIS in Choma today.

Reading out the resolutions, PF District Chairman for Choma Felix Chilufya said the party leaders had gathered to review resolutions of the two recent meeting of chiefs in the province as well as that of

stakeholders who included members of parliament in the province.

He said the PF leadership from Choma, Kalomo and Sinazongwe was saddened at the strong language and threats of violence used by chiefs against the PF government if it went ahead to implement the

re-alignment of Chirundu and Itezhi Tezhi against the traditional leaders wishes.

He noted that chiefs could have engaged government to find out why it had taken such a decision without resorting to threats.

Mr Chilufya said it was also disturbing that traditional leaders who were supposed to be above partisan politics could advocate for violence when the realignment of the two districts was meant to enhance development in the two districts that have been detached from the province administratively.

He said the move by traditional leaders to also issue scathing attacks on government for appointing PF officials as District Commissioners was done without understanding the rationale behind such appointments.

Mr Chilufya said while the PF officials that had been appointed as district commissioners may not possess university degrees, they were qualified enough in their own special way as they understood the PF manifesto better than those with degrees outside the party.

He said PF was more interested in committed leaders who could implement its manifesto.

“They are saying PF has appointed low calibre people as DCs but let them know that it is not University Degrees that matters but one’s commitment to the people’s cause. The PF officials that have been

appointed may have humble educational background but they are committed to the ideals of the party,” argued Mr Chilufya.

Recently, Southern province chiefs who met in Choma urged President Sata to rescind his decision to realign Chirundu and Itezhi Tezhi dsitricts.

Another meeting held in Choma of stakeholders who included members of parliament also resolved to reject Mr Sampa as Provincial Minister.

Is the Post Newspaper suffering a brain drain?

80
Special Assistant for Press and Pubic Relations George Chellah with President Sata.

By Daimone Siulapwa

It is very difficult to see how the Patriotic Front (PF) would have been able to win last year’s general elections without the support of the Post newspaper. Maybe, they would have managed in a way, seeing that the majority of Zambians in general and voters in particular, had grown increasingly disaffected with the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD)20-year- rule.

Either way, the Post did play a very pivotal role towards Michael Chilufya Sata’s decisive victory in the September 20.

It will be remembered that in the 2006 general elections, Michael Sata and the PF did stand a good chance of winning those elections; in fact, some sections of society believe that they actually won. However, the Post was not on their side then, and they eventually lost, although it must be said, by not so a big margin.

Just like in last year’s general election, Michael Sata rode on a platform of anti-China and lower taxes, two issues that endeared him well with the urban youth. But also, he promised to quash all the corruption charges that former President Frederick Chiluba was facing. This stance, some believe, helped him win votes in the Luapula province. However, his support for Chiluba did not go well with the Post, who were determined to see the former President brought to book by late President Mwanawasa for all the wrongs that he did while in power for 10 years.

In a way, the Post somehow threw their support behind Levy, and did help him to win the 2006 general elections. Following his death in 2008, and the subsequent by-election that followed, the Post seemed to be in the middle until the MMD chose its presidential candidate. Clearly, the Post were not in favour of Rupiah Banda, instead, they preferred Ng’andu Magande, then Minister of Finance.

But with Magande losing to RB, as the former president is fondly referred to, the Post was willing to give Sata some space. And to his credit, he changed his stance over Chiluba.

While RB had taken a soft stance on Chiluba, even refusing to register the London judgement and also refusing to appeal his criminal case here, Sata promised to do the exact opposite once voted into power. That earned him the support of the Post, which takes strong issue with corruption matters.

And from 2008, the Post has been with Sata, giving him unprecedented coverage wherever he went. When the PF entered into a Pact with the United Party for National Development (UPND), the Post in a systematic and sometimes obvious manner, worked to ensure that Michael Sata was President of the Pact.

When it became clear that the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema was also interested in the Presidency of the Pact, the Post did everything to make him, and the majority of Zambians, believe and understand that the interests of the Pact were better served under the leadership of Sata.

After the pull-out of the UPND from the Pact, the Post again, did everything possible to make it known that UPND and HH were not a factor in the elections, if anything, they better accept the reality of being a junior partner.

In the end, the PF and Sata won the general elections, and subsequently formed government. Since then, the PF government has appointed a number of staff from the Post to various positions, some in the diplomatic service and others at State House.

Some of these appointments include George Chellah as the his special assistant for press and public relations, Amos Malupenga as the permanent secretary at the ministry of information, broadcasting and tourism, Eddie Mwanaleza, chief photographer State House, Thomas Nsama, photographer, State House while others like Joe Kaunda, Chibaulwa Silwamba, Patson Chilemba, Chansa Kabwela and Yvonne Shibemba among others have been appointed to the diplomatic service. Word has it that more are likely to be appointed.

Now, these appointments are understandable, President Sata is not only showing appreciation, but is also being seen to show real appreciation to the Post for the wonderful work they did on his behalf, to ensure that he ascended to the highest office in the land.

With the kind of coverage that was seen from the public media, particularly the Zambia Daily Mail, Times of Zambia and the state broadcaster, the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), Sata and the PF would have had difficulties winning the elections without the tacit support of the Post.

It is with background that the appointments are somehow justified. But then, by the Post allowing such senior and experienced personnel to leave, are they not risking it too much? Is this not a brain drain to the Post? Is the Post going to successfully fill-up the spaces left by these experienced members of staff?

This is of concern to us readers of the Post, particularly those of us who appreciate and understand where we are coming. We do appreciate the role that the Post has played for two decades in advancing our democracy. And precisely because of that, we do not want a situation where it runs itself in a ditch, by retaining only staff that may not be able to live up to the high standards that have been set.

Of course, one ought to realise that an organisation cannot entirely depend on one person or a selected few. If anything, the Post has in the past lost some valuable journalists such as Bright Mwape, undoubtedly, one of their brightest reporters in the two decades that they have been running.

That said, one would want the Post to retain some formidable reporters. If anything, every newspaper goes for the best in the industry, and always fights to keep its best reporters and editors. If it means promoting or improving their conditions of service, then be it. Or if it means poaching, then also be it.

As a keen follower and reader of the Post since its inception, I would want to see it retain the best that there is in the industry so that it can continue playing its role of a watchdog with very sharp teeth!

One Moment In Time With Whitney

7

By A Kasonde

On Saturday, 11th February 2012 what had started as a rumour sadly turned into reality. The legend that was Whitney Elizabeth Houston died unexpectedly and in yet to be explained circumstances when she was found motionless in a bathtub. So in less than 30 minutes (between the time she told her team she was going to have a bath and the time they found her helpless) the lady, who had a 3 decade entertainment career and who to many was simply known as “the Voice”, was no more.

Whitney was not an average American singer with a scripted background. She was born on 9th August 1963 in Newark, New Jersey – a town that would later, befittingly, provide her final resting place. She came from a middle class family. Her father was an Army Serviceman and Entertainment Executive while her mother Emily known by her friends as Cissy was a gospel singer and choir director at her local church. As expected, Whitney was raised with strict Christian values with a passion for music. She grew up with stars because at just 5 years of age her mother along side her cousin Dionne Warwick were performing as backing singers for the King that was Elvis Presley. And when only 12, Whitney was asked to sing lead vocals in the Choir at the Sunday service in her local Church – New Hope Baptist Church.

However, two years later Whitney was singing backup in her mother’s cabaret act. Whitney’s mother always knew that her daughter would be big in the music business and that she had an amazing voice. But she was adamant that Whitney first needed to grow through life, do her school, go through teenage life and then if something came up when she was 18 that would be Whitney’s decision to make. Indeed many people who knew Whitney at the time were waiting for her first big music break but when the break came, it was not a music break Whitney and her friends were waiting for. Instead, a gentleman working for Click Modeling Agency spotted Whitney in Midtown Manhattan and thought she would be a huge success in modeling.

Whitney’s face went on to feature on the cover of Seventeen Magazine making her one of the first African American girls to feature on the influential magazine of that time. Her striking looks and girl next door charm made her one of the most sought after teens of her time. Apart from Seventeen magazine, she also featured in Cosmopolitan, Glamour and Young Miss, and also featured in a number of commercials.

However, and despite her success in modeling, the now 18 year old Whitney always felt that music was her first love and so she went back to back her mother in the cabaret act. It was during one of these acts that an 18 year old Whitney was spotted first by Gerry Griffith then as a Local Music Promoter who went on to be an Executive at the influential Arista Records – a records production company headed by Clive Davies. Griffith took Whitney to Davies and persuaded him to listen to her. The music mogul had no second thoughts about Whitney. He knew that he had struck gold and immediately signed her.

In April 1983, Whitney signed her first music contract – a one year contract with Arista Records. It was a partnership that was to last a lifetime for Whitney.

The then 19 year old Whitney was taken on a TV show to perform for the very first time and when she did, it was clear that her appeal was not just black or white or pop or Rn’B …she had a general appeal to everybody. Whitney’s self-titled debut album was released over 27 years ago and sold more than a million copies in less than 6 months in America alone. Whitney was well and truly all the way to super star status with only her first album. But it was her single Saving All My Love For You that introduced this young girl who could do no wrong in the recording studio. She has been described as being like Cinderella in this fairytale where she is the beautiful princess who could do no wrong in the recording business. When her first album reached the store shelves, people were simply astounded by her astonishingly powerful voice. The single became an instant classic.

Her second album simply titled Whitney released in June 1987 put her doubters, if any, in their place by not only churning out million more copies and debuting at No.1 but by also producing yet more huge all weather songs such as the feel good I Wanna Dance With Somebody, the mellow Didn’t We Almost Have It All, the dance ballad So Emotional and the healing Where Do Broken Hearts Go.

Her career in the 80’s was a pure success and she had awards and Grammys to show for it. It was a case of everything she touched turning into gold and platinum. She was a huge success all around the world. At 27 Whitney was invited to sing at the 1991 American Super Bowl and didn’t she rock as she mesmerised the audience in and out of the Tampa stadium when she sang the rendition of the Star Spangled Banner – the American anthem. Due to the overwhelming success and response to her performance, Whitney went on to produce the song as a single and it went on to peak at No. 20 making her the only act to turn the national anthem into a pop hit of that magnitude. Whitney went on to donate all the proceeds from the song to the American Red Cross.

Suddenly, Whitney was the toast and talk of town and huge successful artists were queuing to line up with her. However, it was not just the music industry that was taken by storm, the reserved and respected film legend, Kevin Costner had to delay his movie in order to have her star in it and when she did, the blockbuster that is The Bodyguard was a huge success. She sang 6 songs on the movie’s soundtrack including the dramatic never fading all time great that became her signature song, I Will Always Love You.

I Will Always Love You was not just a signature song of iconic performance but it also went on to become the all-time best selling female song of all time and spent over 20 weeks on the billboard charts. It is hard for people to appreciate that in fact this was not a new song but a song that had been done by the ageless Dolly Parton. However, Whitney sang it so well and in her own way and style that a lot of people associate it with her rather than Dolly Parton.

And, Dolly Parton herself has always been gracious at the work and fame that Whitney gave to the song. However, this was not easy. Put it simply it’s like a new star taking on a Beyoncé classic and making it her own. It is hard to see but that is exactly what Whitney did to Dolly Parton taking away a song from the legend and making it her own thereby taking all the credits for it.

In 1995, Whitney returned to the screen with the black movie’s very own desperate women in Waiting To Exhale. It was a movie that brought together four powerful soulful divas in Angela Basset, Loretta Devine, Lela Rochon and of course Whitney herself. The movie was success in portraying black women as middle class professionals and caring mothers rather than as stereotypes. Whitney was of course a singer first and foremost and what was lovely about her screen acting is that they were accompanied by her songs. Thus, she sang three songs to the Waiting To Exhale movie sound track: Count On Me that she did with Ce Ce Winans, Why Does IT Hurt So Much and Exhale (Shoop Shoop). It is worth noting that the soundtrack to this movie was produced by Whitney and the legend that is Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. Babyface, who wrote all the songs, wanted Whitney to perform all the songs but she declined saying she wanted it to be “an album of women with vocal distinction.”

In 1996, Whitney featured in yet another high profile movie, The Preachers’ Wife, this time starring alongside the majestic Denzel Washington. It was yet another success for this remarkable character. Her role and career was so powerful that a few people dare to remember that her mother also featured in the movie. The soundtrack to the movie which she did went to become the largest selling gospel album of all time.

In 1998, Whitney was back to doing what she did best, music, and recorded an album titled My Love Is Your Love that was inspired by and seen as a pure dedication to hubby Bobby Brown. In 2009, after a long absence she came back with the album I Look To You which debuted at No.1 on the billboard’s 200.

Awards

Whitney’s third US single How Will I Know not only peaked at No. 1 but also propelled her to being the first female African American artist to receive consistent heavy rotation on the then White dominated MTV show . Whitney has been credited with opening doors for most black women in the music industry notably Anita Baker and Janet Jackson. However, her influence extended far and beyond and was responsible for acts such as Mariah Carey, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Alicia Keys, Kelly Roland, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Jenifer Hudson to name but only a handful. Beyoncé told Globe a few years ago that Whitney inspired her to get up there and do what she did while Lady Gaga who gave a shout out to Whitney when she received a Grammy at the 2011 Grammy Awards said that she wrote her song Born This Way while thinking about Whitney’s vocals.

In August 2001, Whitney signed the biggest record deal in music history with Arista/BMG. Meanwhile, songs such as Greatest Love Of Them All, How Will I Know, I Look To You all raked in awards for Whitney. In 2009, the Guinness World Records listed her as the most awarded female act of all time. She released 7 studio albums, 3 movie sound track albums all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification. She is the only artist to chart 7 consecutive billboards number ones.

Whitney amassed so many awards and achievements that it seemed untrue to recall that at only 15 she sang in the background vocals for Chaka Khan’s hit single I Am Every Woman which she later sang herself and made it her own on her monster selling The Bodyguard soundtrack album. The album Whitney also produced four different No.1’s making her the first female artist to produce such a result from the same album.

In November 1999, Whitney was named top selling Rn’B female singer of the century, The Bodyguard soundtrack was named top selling soundtrack album of the century. Whitney also won the best artist of the decade while Essence ranked Whitney 5th on the list of 50 most influential Rn’B stars of all time. She has been described as diva to end all divas.

Whitney The Role Model

Whitney was a great supporter of Nelson Mandela and was a strong anti-apartheid campaigner who, as a model, publicly refused to work for agencies who dealt with the apartheid regime of South Africa. In 1988, Whitney joined other stars at Wembley Stadium in London to celebrate then imprisoned Mandela’s 70th birthday.

In 1989 WH set up a foundation to help children around the world. The foundation raises money for children affected by homelessness, aids, cancer and issues of empowerment. In 1990, Whitney was the spokesperson for a Youth Leadership Conference hosted in Washington DC. This enabled her to have an audience with then US President George H W Bush Senior at the Oval office to discuss associated issues. In 1994, Whitney attended and performed at the White House state dinner in honour of the then new South African President Mandela. Whitney went on to perform 3 concerts in South Africa in honour of Mandela and she donated the money to various charities in South Africa.

Good Girl Gone Bad

With the success of her first two albums, Whitney became an international crossover superstar the most prominent since Michael Jackson appealing to all demographics. However, some black critics felt that she was selling out arguing that singing on records lacked the soul that was there when she performed live concerts. At the 1989 Soul Train Music Awards, Whitney was booed when her name was called out. It was at this event that Bobby Brown then as a “King of Hip Hop” himself decided to shield Whitney and offer a hand of protection to the shy and vulnerable Whitney in a community that she was not used to.

It was this act of care and a sense of protection from Bobby Brown that swept Whitney away and the two took off on a courtship that would last 3 years before marrying in July 1992. Whereas a lot of people felt that Bobby was not good enough for the girly and almost angelic Whitney, she felt nothing but love for the man who himself was once an international Rn’B icon. Whitney in fact did a duet with Bobby titled We Have Something In Common in which they reminded the public that there much more between the couple apart from the love and the money. In March 1993, Whitney gave birth to her one and only child Bobbi Kristina Houston Brown and then sang My Love Is Your Love which was seen as a dedication to Bobby Brown for good measure.

However, even though Whitney was seen as a very good girl with the perfect image of the 80’s and 90’s, she changed dramatically by the year 2000. Whitney’s behavior changed drastically, was late for interviews, photo shoots and cancelled performances. Her weight loss also added to rumours that she may have been on drugs but Whitney rubbished the stories as baseless.

Whitney did an interview with Diane Sawyer in 2002 to promote her forthcoming album. The interview was the highest rated television interview in history. However, Whitney again denied drug rumours when she said “First of all, let’s get one thing straight. Crack is cheap. I make too much money to ever smoke crack. Let’s get that straight. Okay? We don’t do crack. We don’t do that. Crack is wack.”

After years of controversy and turmoil, Whitney separated from Bobby Brown in 2006 and was granted divorce in 2007. In September 2009, Whitney appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show to give her first interview in 7 years that was billed as the most anticipated music interview of the decade. Whitney admitted to using cocaine and said this was an everyday thing with Bobby.

It is important to stress that despite these demons Whitney appeared to have turned the corner. She came back and stated that her past was behind her. The music world welcomed her back like a lost child and everybody wished her well. Her last album, I Look To You also contained I Didn’t Know My Own Strength which seemed to vindicate her commitment to overcoming her past and being back. However, Whitney once confessed in an interview that “The biggest devil is me. I am either my best friend or my worst enemy.” The public will forever wonder which Whitney was in that bathtub on that fateful day.

Therefore, even though her death is yet unexplained and mourners did not face up to what a lot of people seem to think was the cause of her sudden death, this did not stop the fuming Celine Dion to give her damning verdict “Whitney’s talent was an inspiration but she had been dragged down by drugs and bad decisions. “It’s just really unfortunate that drugs, bad people, bad influences took over. It took over her dreams, her love and her motherhood. ..time after time we lose people taking pills to perform, pills to wake up and pills to go to bed.” A lot of people will support such comments but in a closed society that is Hollywood such words are not spoken enough.
Religious Even In Turmoil

Whitney had weaknesses, and many at that. However, what remained visibly true even when she sank low was her loyalty to God. It was clear throughout her life that she appreciated that God had been kind to her and for this she always tried to repay her debt at every opportunity. Thus, even at the time that her drug troubles were the talk of town she famously stated on a trip to Israel in 2003, that “I have never felt like this in any other country. I feel at home, I feel wonderful.”

Some of her most powerful songs contain lyrics either praising God or identifying him as the only one who can help overcome. It was therefore befitting that in her last ever public appearance at her long term friend’s (Kelly Price) party Whitney decided to go on stage and in a cracking voice sang the Jesus Loves Me song. It was reported that in weeks leading up to her death she talked a lot about Jesus and how she was looking forward to meeting him.

A Genius At Work

Despite what happened later in her life there is no denying the fact that Whitney was super talented with her voice. Her songs have changed people’s lives the world over. With Whitney there was no gimmick no tricks and no over elaboration there was just the voice. And, believe it or not, she did not even have to sing semi naked to sell her records, she did all effortless. Whitney is said to have been blessed with an astonishing vocal range and an extraordinary technical skill, but what truly made her a great singer was her ability to connect with a song and drive home its drama and emotion with incredible precision. Clive Davies described Whitney as a beautiful person, a talent beyond compare while adding “You wait for a voice like that for a life time.”

Whitney was angelic and she displayed divine talent in her gorgeous singing voice. Dolly Parton commented on hearing of her passing that “I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, Whitney, I will always love you.” P Diddy simply paid tribute by declaring that she was the greatest voice he ever heard.

New York Times – Her voice was clean and strong, with barely any grit, well suited to songs of love and aspiration. Hers was a voice of triumph and achievement, and it made for any number of stunning, time-stopping vocal performances.

Whitney was a pop diva, no doubt. No one rivals Whitney in her exquisite vocal fluidity and purity of tone, and her ability to infuse a lyric with mesmerising melodrama. Whitney was, alongside Michael Jackson and Madonna, one of the artists who hybridize pop in the 80’s though her strategy was far less radical than that of her peers. Jackson and Madonna were by turns lascivious and brutish and, crucially, willing to let their production speak more loudly than their voices, an option Whitney never went for.

Her gift was so rare, so impossible to mimic. She was someone more to be admired, like a museum piece, than to be emulated. We were blessed to listen to her music, to dance to it and to make memories with it. Unfortunately, they do not make them like her these days. But like she said “If I should die this very day. Don’t cry, cause on earth we weren’t meant to stay…”

Farewell to and RIP Whitney the lady who sang with clothes on one moment in time.

Movie review :Safe house

2

Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds star in the action-thriller Safe House. Washington plays the most dangerous renegade from the CIA, who comes back onto the grid after a decade on the run. When the South African safe house he’s remanded to is attacked by mercenaries, a rookie operative (Reynolds) escapes with him. Now, the unlikely allies must stay alive long enough to uncover who wants them dead.

PROS

  • This movie being set in cape town, south Africa was a good choice , had good scenery .
  • Denzel Washington was excellent in his role as always ,  Ryan Reynolds also put up a good performance.
  • It has non-stop action and the story line will keep you at the edge of your seat.

CONS

  • Some of the action scenes were seemed force and not really necessary.

FAVORITE QUOTES

Matt Weston: Don’t Worry, I’ll take it from here.

Tobin Frost: First rule is to protect your house guest. I’m your house guest.

CONCLUSION

It is not the best movie Dezel Washington has stared in , but it is still a very good movie. The story line has twists and turns , it is not predictable .  Ryan Reynolds was great in this movie , in most of his other work he is some-what of a comedic character ,but in this one he had a more serious role. He plays of a young, idealistic and ambitious field agent on his first assignment that is desperate to impress and get out of the boring ‘babysitting’ safe house job.

Mwinilunga District Commissioner Victor Kayekesi has refuted media reports alleging that the 2012 recruitment exercises of nurses at Kalene school of nursing was marred with corruption.

Mr Kayekesi told Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in an interview that the article published in one of the on line newspapers was false and defamatory in nature.

The article published alleged that the recruitment and selection process of candidates to undergo training as nurses at Kalene school of nursing in Ikelengi district of North-Western province was characterized with corruption.

He explained that the panel appointed to carry out the recruitment exercise was chosen according to the Ministry of Health and General Nursing Council guidelines and standards.

Mr Kayekesi wondered why the aggrieved person chose to rush to the media instead of reporting the matter to the Police or District Commissioner’s office.

He said at no time did his office receive any complaint from the general public in the manner the recruitment exercises was conducted.

Mr Kayekesi stated that a competent selection committee was instituted to carry out interviews comprising of officers from the Office of the Vice President, District Education Board Secretary (DEBS),Community representative, Human Resources Management Officer, Clinical Tutors, Dsitrict Medical Officer and Midwife for the district.

Meanwhile Kalene Mission Hospital Executive Director, John Woodfield said the mission is dismayed at the malicious article.

[pullquote]“I am very disappointed that a news website such as Zambia Watchdog, which prides itself on presenting accurate information to the public, would publish such unsubstantiated allegations from anonymous people.[/pullquote]

Dr Woodfield said the selection process was transparent and free from malpractices as opposed to the reported story in the on line media.

He disclosed that the selection committee was verbally abused and threatened for simply sticking to the stipulated guideline by the General Nursing Council and Ministry of Healthy by those who did not meet the criteria for entry.

Dr Woodfield said the panel strictly adhered to the stipulated standards and selected deserving candidates without biasness.

“I am very disappointed that a news website such as Zambia Watchdog, which prides itself on presenting accurate information to the public, would publish such unsubstantiated allegations from anonymous people.

Investigative journalism would be able to confirm that the DEBS and Senior nursing officer are both female, and would also be able to confirm that no one can be selected without achieving the appropriate grade 12 qualifications first as all grades are independently reviewed by the General Nursing Council,” he complained.

Dr Woodfield said the author of the defamatory and malicious article wants to deliberately undermine members of the selection panel who were tasked to carry out the recruitment exercise with unfounded reports.

ZESCO launches pre-paid services for electricity in Livingstone

2
ZESCO Head Office

Zambia Electricity Supply Cooperation(ZESCO) Senior Manager Electro-Technical Services Changala Nswana says ZESCO would soon commence the installation of prepaid meters in Livingstone and was targeting 14,000 residential and 1,000 commercial customers.

He said this yesterday in Livingstone during the launch of prepaid metering system project which arose from the successful pilot project which started in Lusaka and Copperbelt Province in 2006.

Mr Nswana explained that said phase 1 which began in Lusaka’s Emmasdale township was a great success for ZESCO because the customers accepted it adding that this is what has prompted ZESCO management to spread the installation of prepaid meters to other towns in the country.

He said so far the project had been successful in the Copper belt and Lusaka and that the power utility company was now rolling the project to Eastern province, Central, and Southern Provinces.

Mr Nswana said in its bid to cater for the target of 450,000 customers with prepaid metres, ZESCO has procured 400,000 prepaid meters from Zambia Electrometer and about 115 from South Africa.

In Livingstone, Mr Nswana said ZESCO had already established two vending centres for the sale of power units at ZESCO Regional office and Mosi-o tunya office.

He further added that the company had contracted 4 third party vendors in Ellaine Brittel, Dambwa, Maramba, and Linda compounds in Livingstone to make it easier for customers to access units.

Mr Nswana said ZESCO aims to have up to 90% of customers country wide on prepaid metering system by the end of 2012.

Meanwhile, ZESCO Customer Service Manager, Patrick Mwila urged members of the public to report any one found selling the prepaid meters because they were free of charge.

“ I want to take this opportunity to warn our customer to report to us any one selling these prepaid meters because they are free and should only be installed by ZESCO personnel,” said Mr Mwila.

And ZESCO Demand Side Management Manager Mr Wilcliff Chipeta said ZESCO got a loan worthy US $2 million which is about K10 billion from World Bank and purchased 1,000,000 Compact Fluorescent Lights for free distribution to its customers.

Mr Chipeta said 18,000 energy saving bulbs will be distributed in Livingstone District and urged the residents to exchange three ordinary bulbs with CFLs to prevent energy loss.

He also said commencement of installation of solar geysers will soon be communicated to the residents.

Many Livingstone residents have welcomed the projects which they said would drastically help them to cope with the huge bills and save money.

Ms Elizabeth Mbalwe noted that prepaid is a good thing because it is one way of teaching people how to budget and avoiding accumulating huge bills as they were free to control their power consumption.

Government denies an individual investor 20, 000 hectares given to him by a local Chief

62

Government says it will only give 1,000 hectares of land to Jan Wessy Jacob Boatha, an investor who was allegedly given 20,000 hectares of land by Chief Kaindu of Mumbwa district in Central province for the purpose of game ranching.

And Chief Kaindu has denied receiving K50 Million down payment from the K500 Million cost of the land that extends across Kafue river allegedly sold to Mr Boatha.

Central Province Permanent Secretary Edwin ZUMBUNU told ZANIS in Kabwe yesterday that government could not give a huge chunk of land amounting to 20,000 hectares to one person because this was too much.

Mr Zumbunu said out of the 20,00 hectares the investor required, only 1,000 hectares will be offered to him while 19, 000 hectares will be given back to the people in the area so that they could continue with their life set up.

He further explained that after consultations and verifications, part of the land would be given back to the Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) to also continue managing wild life.

Mr Zumbunu pointed out that 1, 000ha would be big enough for Mr Boatha to keep wild animals and allow the other part be used by the local people for cultivation and other activities.

And Chief Kaindu said it was not true that he was given K50 Million by Mr Boatha as down payment from the alleged K500 Million cost of the 20,000ha of land.

Chief Kaindu told ZANIS that the matter was exaggerated by a Ward Councilor in his chiefdom who allegedly instigated villagers to protest and petition government through the then Mumbwa District Commissioner Lemmy Chibuye.

Chief Kaindu who was accompanied by Mumbwa District Commissioner Sunday Shamabanse, accused the named Ward Councilor of trying to cause confusion by making unsubstantiated allegations.

He said Mr Boatha was in fact just interested in working with the Mpusu community by providing funds for developmental community based projects which would ease people lives in the chiefdom.

“Boatha want to assist with funds for development in my area which he would deposit in a development account. This money would not be given to me, I will not even see this money because it will go straight into an account to which I will be a signatory,’ Explained Chief Kaindu.

But in November last year, Mpusu villagers complained to government that Chief Kaindu was allegedly selling land without consulting his subjects.

The villagers were concerned because the size of the land in question which they said extended across Kafue river and included part of the game management area.

He Has another Seed for You

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“…For God has appointed another seed for me…”
(Genesis 4:25, NKJV)

TODAY’S WORD from Joel and Victoria
In Genesis, Eve went through a great disappointment. Her son Cain killed her son Able, the first murder in the Bible. I’m sure Eve, like any mother, was devastated and heartbroken at the passing of her son. But I love what Eve said in Genesis 4:25, “God has appointed another seed for me.” In essence, she was saying, “I don’t understand it. It doesn’t make sense, but I trust God. This is not the end. He has appointed another seed.”

Friend, when you go through things that you don’t understand, it is not the end. Nothing is lost in the kingdom. God is going to appoint another seed, and that seed represents the future. It indicates what is coming. If you will let go of what didn’t work out, let go of the hurts and pains, then for everything you’ve lost, God will appoint another seed. You’ll give birth to more in the future than you lost in the past. Keep praying, keep believing, keep hoping because God is for you. Trust Him and embrace the good things He has in store for your future!

A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father God, You are the giver of all life! You give life to my dreams, life to my relationships, and life to my mortal body. Today I choose to release the past and embrace the gift of life You have in store for my future in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Arrows Fail to Strike Down Leopards

7

Red Arrows interest in this years Caf Confederation Cup is looking very bleak after they were held at home by Royal Leopards from Swaziland in a preliminary round, first leg match at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka today.

Arrows’ frontline led by Dube Phiri failed to find their way past Leopards impressive goalkeeper Mphikizuzi Dlamini.

Dlamini twice kept out attempts by Bruce Musakanya in the 40th and 48th minute.

Mwape Mwelwa too had a good chance in the 51st minute saved by Swazi international goalkeeper who also shutout a Bronson Chama free kick in the 58th minute.

Meanwhile, Leopards best period in the game came in the last 10 minutes when Nxumalo Zweli saw his header scrape off the horizontal from a corner won after Luwawa had parried a Sabelo Sangweni shot in the 81st minute.
