First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda calls for stiff laws on the management of the country’s natural resources

First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda called for stiff laws on the management of the country’s natural resources. Dr Kaunda said there is need to put an end to unnecessary cutting trees in the country.

Dr Kaunda was speaking at the launch of the National Tree Planning Programme in Kanakantapa in Chongwe district yesterday,

A total of 25 million trees are expected to be planted countrywide during the same programme.

Speaking at the same function, Chieftainess Nkomesha Mukambo II thanked government for attaching great importance to the reforestation and aforestation programme in the country. Chieftainess Nkomesha thanked government for choosing Chongwe as the first pilot area.

She explained that Chongwe district is one of the many towns in the country that have the highest deforestation rates because of its location to the highest charcoal demanding market of Lusaka and the surrounding areas.

The traditional leader further bemoaned the previous government’s neglect to revamping the forest sector a situation she said has continued to accelerate the deforestation rates resulting in most rivers drying up in most parts of the country.

The traditional leader also urged government to emulate the first republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda style of governance of ensuring that tangible measures are put in place to resuscitate the forestry sector.

Chieftainess Nkomesha further thanked the PF government for revamping the many developmental programmes neglected by the previous regime especially those which were of economic value to the country.
The event was attended by several Cabinet Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Diplomats accredited to Zambia.

And earlier President Michael Sata launched the National Tree Planting Programme (NTPP) with emphasis on revamping the forestry sector in the country. President Sata said government will also restructure the forest department in the ministry of lands so that it can effectively implement the national tree planting programmes (NTPP).

Mr Sata said once the department is effectively restructured, it is expected to create more than 200,000 jobs in the short term.

The Head of State said this is in line with the PF government’s commitment to create employment opportunity to the Zambian people a noble task at which it was ushered into government.

Mr Sata said this in a speech read on his behalf by Justice Minister Winter Kabimba at the launch of the National Tree Planning Programme in Kanakantapa in Chongwe district yesterday.

A total of 25 million trees are expected to be planted countrywide during the same programme.

And Lands Minister Wilbur Simuusa said government will soon lift the ban on timber licensing in the country after consultations with key stakeholders.

Mr Simuusa also said government is seriously working out modalities of coming up with serious measures on the rampant charcoal burning in the country, a move he said will assist in streamlining the rampant cutting of timber trees.

Mr Simmusa further said there is need for serious sustainable, management and reforestation programme and called for adequate support from all key stakeholders in the country.

Health Minister Dr Joseph Kasonde unveils the plague to mark the official opening of the refurbished University Teaching Hospital Eye Centre of Excellence in Lusaka, Looking on is the head of eye clinic at UTH, Grace Mutati
Health Minister Dr Joseph Kasonde

THE cholera death-toll in Luapula Province has risen to three, Health Minister Emmanuel Kasonde has confirmed.

Both Dr Kasonde and Nchelenge District Commissioner Joseph Chisakula said in an interview yesterday two people had died from suspected Cholera which has broken out in Nchelenge and Mwense.

Dr Kasonde said the latest cholera deaths had been reported in Nchelenge and that stringent measures were being deployed to curb further deaths.

“Yes I can confirm that we have a total of three deaths from cholera in Luapula and health officials in the Province are doing everything to curb the situation from worsening,” Dr Kasonde said.

Separately, Mr Chisakula confirmed the District was putting in place counter measures to prevent a further spread of the disease.

Enock Kunda died on Tuesday in Mwense District’s Mambilima Mission Hospital where 36 patients had been admitted.

Mwense District Commissioner, Victor Kasuba said 35 patients had been moved from the mission hospital to Mulundu Basic School where a cholera center had been established.

Two other patients had been admitted to Chibondo Health Center. The first cases of cholera were reported on Sunday and samples had been taken to Mansa General Hospital, where results proved positive for the water-borne disease.

District health officials had since appealed to residents in Mwense and surrounding areas to limit their movements particularly avoiding the border areas with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The DRC’s Kasenga District also had confirmed cholera cases.

The Ministry of Health had already put in place various medical interventions including a steady supply of drugs.

Mining sector leads Zambia’s foreign earnings

Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Danish Parliament and officials from their Zambian embassy are dwarfed by giant 300-tonne Komatsu dump truck on their recent visit to the Chingola Open Pits operations of Konkola Copper Mines.

The mining sector has contributed more than 63 % of Zambia’s earning from Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) pledges during the third quarter of 2012.

Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) Research, Planning and Policy Director Florence Mumba says out of the total earnings of about $2.8 billion (KR 14.2 billion) the mining sector raked in investment of more than $1.7 billion (about KR8 billion).

Ms Mumba was speaking to ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today.

She said through the FDIs mining had also scored the highest number of pledged employment opportunities of over 1,200 jobs.

Ms Mumba attributed FDI inflows in mining to sound economic policies by the government and also the investor confidence in the Kalimbila project which is to become Zambia’s largest single mine with production capacity of more than 300,000 tonnes of copper outturn.

She revealed that Energy and manufacturing sectors also generated substantial earnings from the FDIs with energy raking in $700 million (about KR 3.5 billion) and manufacturing bringing in $92 million (KR 460 million) and job pledges being 115 and 754 respectively.

And Ms Mumba has said ZDA has identified several sectors for the year 2013 likely to continue attracting FDIs among them infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, agro processing, manufacturing, and energy, stating that the latter was the cornerstone for all development.

She explained that every sector depended on energy and therefore when that sector was sorted all other sectors fulfilled their potential and drove the economic development of the country.

UPND to field candidate in the Mpongwe by election

UPND Deputy Spokesperson Cornerlius Mweetwa

United Party for National Development (UPND) Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa has told ZANIS that his party his ready to take part in the Mpongwe and local government by-elections across the country.

Mr Mweetwa said his party has since received four application letters from its members wishing to stand on the Mpongwe Parliamentary seat.

He said a team of experts has since been sent to Mpongwe to carry out an analysis before a final decision is made.

He said the UPND would want to fill in a candidate of the local people’s choice who understands the situation and problems that Mpongwe has been going through.

The UPND spokesman however stated that his party will take time to scrutinise its members wishing to contest in order to avoid members that could easily be poached.

Mr Mweetwa further told ZANIS that his party will take this opportunity to show the country that UPND is the only credible, reliable and predictable party by providing meaningful discourse on national issues.

He however stated that the party is ready to work with any other opposition parties for the purpose of giving checks and balances to the government but added that it can never work with the ruling party.

Meanwhile Alliance for Democracy and Development president Charles Milupi refused to comment on the matter when asked whether his party was taking part in the Mpongwe By- Elections.

And -Zambia Direct Democracy Movement (ZDDM) President Edwin Sakala says it is pointless for the opposition to filed in individual candidates in the Mpongwe Parliamentary By-Elections.

Mr Sakala told ZANIS in a telephone interview that despite his party not participating in the Mpongwe By-elections it is still discussing with other political parties on which party to support.

He said political parties should learn from the 2011 General elections where votes seemed to have been split among numerous political parties instead of putting up one strong campaign that will yield results than giving more chance for the ruling party to win without any difficulties.

Mr Sakala however hinted that his party in 2016 will be among the strongest opposition parties which will be able to challenge the current government.

Masebo should stop crying like a baby-Belemu

Mr. Ephraim Belemu, UPND Mbabala MP and Chairman for Tourism

UPND Chairperson for Tourism Ephraim Belemu has criticized the manner in which Tourism Minister Sylvia Masebo is handling the ZAWA scandal.

Mr. Belemu who is also Mbabala MP said it was irregular for Mrs. Masebo to fire the ZAWA Directors in the absence of a Board.

“The first thing she did when she became Minister was to fire the Board constituted by Hon. Lubinda when he was Minister responsible for Tourism. She has failed to put in place a Board all this time and she is now making irregular decisions. This is bad governance of the highest order” Mr. Belemu said.

Mr. Belemu who served as Director of Marketing at Zambia Tourism Board before venturing into politics claimed that Mrs. Masebo’s decision to cancel 19 safari hunting concessions was meant to benefit some PF sponsors.

“A Minister cannot just wake up and fire Directors and Managers at a public institution created by an Act of Parliament without recommendations from the Board. This level of interest from Mrs. Masebo in ZAWA is highly suspicious,” he said.

“We know that she was brought in to undo what Hon. Lubinda wanted to do at ZAWA. Hon Masebo is now desperate to reward those people that supported the PF financially. Our challenge to her is to stop complaining and start providing solutions.”

Mr. Belemu said Mrs. Masebo has spent a lot of time complaining about the state of the wildlife sub sector without offering any credible solutions.

“She should stop crying like a little baby, if she has seen planes carrying our animals illegally then the question should be what has she done about it?”

The UPND Tourism Chairperson also observed that Mrs. Masebo’s statement on animals being airlifted has the potential to compromise national security.

“We have been told by Ministers of Defence and Home Affairs that our borders and airspace are fully secure and now Mrs. Masebo is telling us that our airspace is porous and foreigners are easily airlifting our animals illegally. She is in government and she is supposed to be telling us what her government is doing to stop this if at all it is happening.”

During a news briefing on Wednesday, Mrs. Masebo claimed that some high levels of corruption at ZAWA have led to some foreigners illegally airlifting Zambia’s wildlife from game parks.

Mulongoti urges church body to condemn injustices and speaks out against Masebo’s revelation of loopholes in the Zambian airspace

Mike Mulongoti addressing the media at the conference

Former Works and Supply Minister Mike Mulongoti has come to the defence of Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia Executive Director Reverend Pukuta Mwanza on his sentiments of the alleged abuse of the Public Order Act, with a call on other church mother bodies to condemn injustices in the country.

Speaking in an interview , Mr. Mulongoti said he is shocked that government has come out strongly in condemning Reverend Mwanza for speaking against the injustices in the country.

He encouraged Reverend Mwanza and other stakeholders to be strong and continue speaking for the voiceless in the country.

The former cabinet minister says it is highly hypocritical for the PF to turn around and stick to the laws they condemned while in opposition.

Mr. Mulongoti said the Patriotic Front should not forget that while in opposition, they enjoyed whenever the church condemned injustices by the MMD government.

He has therefore urged Chief Government Spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni to find solutions to issues that Zambians want the government to address as opposed to condemning the truth.

Chief Government spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni was recently quoted as saying that the Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) and Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) in particular were issuing statements that were “inflated and lopsided” on the Public Order Act.

It is clear that the EFZ executive director Pukuta Mwanza and FODEP’s McDonald Chipenzi are determined to ignore the fundamental realities of governance for selfish motives.

“To suggest abuse of power by the State especially on the Public Order Act is the worst form of lies and deceit that can ever come from two self-respecting leaders of the civil society that claim to mean well for the country,” Mr Sakeni said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mulongoti says the revelations by Tourism Minister Sylvia Masebo that some people have secretly been flying planes into Game parks to illegally airlift government trophy, has the potential to jeopardize the country’s security.

Mr. Mulongoti said the matter is sensitive and that Ms. Masebo should have sealed the loopholes secretly without alarming the nation,a situation he said raises security questions.

PF leadership in Mwinilunga want District Education Board Secretary removed for sharing a platform with opposition UPND MP

28

Mwinilunga District Education Board Secretary, Dorothy Maseke has come under fire from the Patriotic Front (PF) leadership that want her removed from the district in the area for sharing a platform with opposition UPND MP, Stephen Katuuka.

The PF leadership, led by Mwinilunga district chairman, Godfrey Foloshi and Constituency chairman, August Kampelembe, presented a petition to District Commissioner, Victor Kayikesi today demanding the removal of Ms Maseke.
Mr Kayikesi confirmed receiving the petition which he said he will send to North Western Permanent Secretary, Augustine Seyuba for a decision.

The DC said the ruling party leadership in Mwinilunga is incensed by the decision of the DEBS to hold a meeting in Kayama Ward alongside the UPND MP, Mr Katuuka.

Mr Kayikesi said the PF leadership has also accused Ms Maseke of allowing the opposition MP to drive on her official GRZ vehicle when travelling to Kanyama Ward where the date of a by-election has already been announced.

The DC said he has been in touch with Ms Maseke, who has told him that she went to the area to discuss with the community over the plans by provincial education authorities to open the new secondary school which has been under construction.

The provincial administration plans to open Kayama Technical High School on January 14, 2013.

Asked about his view whether he thought Ms Maseke’s visit had a political campaign motive, Mr Kayikesi said it was difficult to know her political position.

He said what has sparked the demands by the PF leadership to have the DEBS removed is that she was in wrong company of an opposition leader in an area that is politically sensitive due to a local government by-election that is underway.

However, the DC said what he knows is that the DEBS has been working under instructions from the Provincial Education Office to have the uncompleted school opened.

He said the party officials are also against the idea of opening the new secondary school when the toilets are not completed and there is no water, electricity and text books.

Mr Kayikesi said he supports the view of the party officials that the school must not open because the environment is not yet conducive for learning.

Micro Finance Service Providers’s lending interest rate capped at 42% by Bank of Zambia

61
Bank of Zambia
Bank of Zambia

The Bank of Zambia has with immediate effect introduced a cap on the effective annual lending interest rates that licensed non-bank financial institutions can charge their customers.

This follows similar recent measures taken on commercial banks by the central bank.

Bank of Zambia Head of Public Relations Kanguya Mayondi in a statement released to media said that this measure has been necessitated on account of the exorbitant interest rates that some non-bank financial institutions have continued to charge their customers.

Mr Mayondi explained that the capping of interest rates is aimed at making borrowing from non-bank financial institutions more affordable and equitable especially to the vulnerable micro-borrowers served by this sector.

He said that as a consequence, the maximum effective annual lending interest rate for non-bank financial institutions designated as microfinance service providers by the Bank of Zambia shall not exceed 42%.

He said that consequently, the Bank will designate non-bank financial institutions qualifying under this measure.

Mr Mayondi added that the maximum effective annual lending rate that will be charged by all other non-bank financial institutions will not exceed 30%.

He said that the interest caps of 42% and 30% have been arrived at by multiplying the commercial bank maximum effective annual lending interest rate, which currently stands at 18.25%, by factors of 2.302 and 1.644, respectively.

He stated that the Bank of Zambia will periodically revise the factors applicable to the non-bank financial institutions interest caps, in response to changes in economic fundamentals and the commercial bank rate.

Mr Mayondi further added that the conditions will apply to new loans written, while existing loans will be allowed to run their course on the current terms unless refinanced.

Meanwhile the Bank of Zambia has directed commercial banks and business entities to accept cheques issued prior to 1st January 2013 in the old currency.

Head of Public Relations Kanguya Mayondi said that the central bank has received reports that certain business entities and some commercial banks are turning away customers holding cheques prior to 1st January 2013 in the old currency.

Mr Mayondi said that cheques issued prior to 1st January 2013 in the old currency are just as good and should accordingly be accepted and processed.

He reminded all business entities and commercial banks that the cheques have a validity period of six months and therefore cannot be deemed to be invalid because of the currency rebasing exercise.

Mr Mayondi said that Cheques, therefore, should be accepted accordingly as they will be processed through the banking system by dividing the amounts by 1,000 to convert the values into the rebased currency.

He said that the Bank of Zambia, in this regard, wishes to remind all business entities and commercial banks that cheques issued prior to 1st January 2013 and in the old currency must be recognized and accepted as payment in order to ensure that well-meaning customers are not inconvenienced.

The Committee to Protect Journalists wants action against Koffi

Congolese musician Kofi Olomide is mobbed when he arrived at Jesus Soul Winners chapel in Lusaka
The Committee to Protect Journalists has called on authorities in Zambia to thoroughly investigate accusations that Congolese musician Koffi Olomide attacked a freelance photographer on Friday at a concert in Lusaka.

News reports said Olomide attacked Jean Ndayisenga at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel as the photographer attempted to take a picture of the musician.

Ndayisenga said Olomide kicked him in the face and damaged the flash of his camera, news reports said.

Ndayisenga, a Rwandan commonly known as “Mandela,” sought treatment at UTH and reported the attack Kabwata police station.

Police Spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela said the case had been transferred to Lusaka Central Police and that they were investigating.

The Sunday Mail cited concert organizer Suke Chile as saying Olomide had denied the allegations.
News reports said Olomide could not be reached for comment.

“A photographer should not be subjected to assault while covering a musical performance,” said CPJ East Africa Consultant Tom Rhodes. “We urge authorities to investigate this reported attack and bring appropriate charges.”

Olomide arrived in Zambia last week to perform three shows.

News accounts also reported that the musician has faced assault charges in the past.

In August, he was handed a three-month suspended prison sentence in the Democratic Republic of Congo for assaulting his producer.

“Swindled” Kaputa businessman writes to Toyota President seeking a new car and compensation

53

A Kaputa based businessman who claims that Toyota Zambia swindled him has now written to the President of the Toyota Motor Corporation seeking a new car and compensation.

Dr Andrew Tafuna, a farmer explained in documents obtained in Lusaka that he bought a Toyota Hilux Double Cab from Toyota Zambia in April 2010 at a cost of 200 Million Kwacha (old Kwacha).

He explained that on his way back to Kaputa, the vehicle started developing clutch problems and had difficulties reaching Luapula Province.

“I contacted Toyota Lusaka and they promptly sent their men to tow the vehicle back to Lusaka and I and my two daughters followed them back to the capital,” Dr. Tafuna said.

He says on their way back to Lusaka, they were involved in a road traffic accidents resulting in the vehicle having some heavy dents.

Dr. Tafuna has demanded that he be given a brand Hilux Double Cab and compensation for the loss he has suffered from not having the use of his vehicle since 2010.

From the email responses obtained, Toyota maintains that the specific range of Hilux Double Cab that Dr. Tafuna wanted has run out of stock and can only offer him a Toyota Delux 4×4 but that he will need to top up close to US$ 10,000.

“I bought a brand new vehicle from their showroom, it developed faults and I reported. As we were bringing the vehicle to Lusaka, we get involved in an accident and my daughters suffer shock and trauma, I seek for a replacement and compensation and they are now asking me to pay another US$10,000. This is a scandal and Toyota Zambia wants to swindle me of my money,” Dr. Tafuna said.

The aggrieved farmer has now written to the President Of Toyota Motor Corporation seeking redress after concluding that the Lusaka office does not want to resolve the matter amicably.

In his letter to the President and representative Director of Toyota Motor Corporation dated 24th December 2012, Dr Tafuna explains that he bought a Toyota Hilux Double Cab from Toyota Zambia in 2010 and that the very first day he got it, problems on his vehicle started.

Dr Tafuna says all he wants now is a new vehicle and compensation from Toyota Zambia for loss of business as well as to cover all the costs that he has incurred while waiting for the vehicle to be repaired.

Hunt for Successor – Stop the Sata Dynasty

90

sata-conference

By Field Ruwe

It is 2013. If this year the opposition does not find a way of organizing itself, we are stuck with Michael Sata for the rest of his political career. I can tell you now that the Sata Dynasty is in the making and once created it will be impossible to dismantle. We will become a North Korea. Zambia will become a totalitarian hereditary dictatorship and a “Hermit Kingdom” like Zimbabwe, isolated from the rest of the world.

Why do I say this?

It is because our “Democracy Index” is fast falling. The Democracy Index is supposed to measure the state of democracy in a country. It is based on 60 indicators grouped in five different categories: electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, functioning of government, political participation and political culture.

After a year of Sata’s presidency, Zambia has failed in all the categories and can now be categorized as a “flawed democracy” operating under a fledgling authoritarian regime. All signs point to a single-party state organized around Michael Sata (founder of the Patriotic Front Party), his family, and closest allies. Read Wynter Kabimba’s twisted lips: “It is not the PF who wants the one-party state. It is the people of Zambia.”

We may have succeeded in stopping FTJ from a third term bid. We must not bank on this one. There is a big difference between Frederick Titus Chiluba and Michael Chilufya Sata. Chiluba was covertly (quietly) aggressive. In trying to dominate and control us, he was deceptive enough to hide his behavior and true intentions. In the end we caught him—just on time.

Sata is the opposite. He is overtly (openly) aggressive. When he is determined to get something by hook or crook, he is open, direct and without shame. He uses “Reward Power” tactic to destroy his opponents. Beneficiaries respond in kind by blackmailing, defecting, or by carrying through with orders, requests and directions.

[pullquote]As at December 31, 2012, opposition parties were circling the drain like refuse, and it may be safe to say goodbye to almost all of them[/pullquote]

Remember how when he was sworn in, he made the destruction of The Post a priority? Right before our eyes, he ransacked the paper and left only the shell in the name of Fred Mmembe.
A year later, the newspaper is toothless and its Managing Editor wallows in the corridors of power, avoiding being run over. He spends the bulk of his time defending his ego and hoping for a bright day. Today, George Chellah, Amos Malupenga and other former senior staff have assumed powers beyond him.
Sata is still using distraction and diversion techniques to keep Mmembe off focus so that he can keep himself free to promote his self-serving hidden agenda.

Reward Power

It is with this same “Reward Power” weapon that Sata wishes to blast the opposition and create a one-party state. He put it to test back in June 2012 when he seduced Elias Chipimo (NAREP) and Edith Nawakwi (FDD) to accompany him to the Rio+20 summit in Brazil. He took them on a trip so as to lower their defenses. He wanted them to surrender their clout and ability to fight him.

He chose them not because they were the most aggressive opposition leaders. They posed the least threat. As a master manipulator and explorer, he was exploiting their greatest weakness—lavishness and opulence. Both Chipimo and Nawakwi have experienced certain kind of pleasure in the past; Chipimo through up-bringing, and Nawakwi through the MMD. Sata wanted them to relive it.

By asking them to accompany him on a free jolly ride overseas, he awakened in them the desires they have very little control over. With this positive reinforcement, they succumbed to him, and he felt respected and comfortable in their presence.

When he posed with them for photographs at Heathrow in London, and in Brazil he was showing us how powerful a manipulator he was and how gullible the opposition was. In the end, using his “Reward Power” weapon he knocked the molars out of their mouths. With only a few teeth left, Chipimo and Nawakwi went down their knees and thanked him for wounding them. They have not been the same since—more so Nawakwi.
I have said it before and I will say it again, FDD is going nowhere with Nawakwi at the helm. Marksman Sata shot her off the radar when he appointed her to oversee investment in the bio-fuel enterprise.

Religious vote

He quickly reloaded his “Reward Power” and turned it on a Catholic Priest of all the people—Father Frank Bwalya. Sata knows that religion is always a factor in Zambian politics. He uses Christian rhetoric to portray an image of empathy, morality and truthfulness, and makes political gain from his image as a Catholic.

There are about three million Catholics in Zambia (about a quarter of the population), making the church the largest religious institution. Previously, the church was a collaborator with the ruling party to preserve the status quo until the Evangelical FTJ declared Zambia a Christian nation. With that the Catholic Church was relegated to a pressure group and an auditor of public life.

In the past years the church has, intentionally or unintentionally, fronted a young Zambian priest, Father Frank Bwalya, to pose as a political activist. Sata knows how dangerous Bwalya is. Back in 2010 when Bwalya was arrested on suspicion of calling for the removal of Rupiah Banda, there was a massive protest.

Although they are friends, Sata knows that Bwalya is an ambitious agitator and provocateur, running an “opposition party” called “Get Involved or Die Zambia.” He is perhaps the biggest threat. Sata crippled him with a ZESCO Board member blast. He too has not been the same since.

The Opposition

As at December 31, 2012, opposition parties were circling the drain like refuse, and it may be safe to say goodbye to almost all of them. Fully aware of their vulnerability, Sata has turned his “Reward Power” arsenal into a weapon of mass destruction and he is shooting at the opposition trapped as they are in the drain.

Working within his presidential powers and with no care for consultation he is poaching opposition law legislators and party executives—offering many of them deputy ministerial jobs and executive positions in the corporate world.

It was a gesture such as this one that sent Nawakwi’s FDD in disarray in 2003 when Mwanawasa awarded key members of her party cabinet positions; Dipak Patel (Commerce Minister), Geoffrey Samukonga (Deputy Commerce Minister), and my buddy Chance Kabaghe (Deputy Agriculture Minister). Sata is not doing it in the same spirit as Mwanawasa. He is hoping that the appointments will put the last nail in the coffin of the opposition.

First, Sata has targeted the MMD, a party hamstrung by its own internal divisions. Even though to some people Nevers Mumba has made some impressive strides in this short period, it is too little too late.
Like Andrew Kashita has said, the MMD is on its deathbed. I have repeatedly said that it has long stopped to breathe. Now I can predict that the MMD is headed for a big splinter. It will take something pretty dramatic to stop the tsunami.

Nevers Mumba

A political dilettante, Nevers Mumba, is handing Sata a real opportunity to completely annihilate and cremate the MMD. His failure to find a way of connecting with his rivals in his party is most unfortunate and could be at his own peril, politically.

Where is his pastoral knack to bring the lost sheep together? Members like Major Richard Kachingwe have a right to freely express their fears and grievances, even to doubt their leader’s loyalty to the party.
If it is true that Mumba’s readmission to the MMD was rejected at a meeting chaired by Mwanawasa, MMD National Chairman Kabinga Pande, who Kachingwe says attended the meeting, should confirm or deny the claim. And if indeed Mumba is still running the Reform Party he should issue a statement to clear the air and apologize to his new followers. Being leader of the party does not make him indispensable.

Most of all, Pastor Nevers Mumba should have publicly castigated the people who beat up Kachingwe and prayed for their forgiveness. How is he going to save Zambia if he cannot save people in his own party? Expulsions and suspensions are fodder for Sata.

Hakainde Hichilema

As for Hakainde Hichilema, he has not gone over the hump of identity and belonging. His party is still usurped by tribal politics. He is struggling to tap into the people’s natural fear of supporting what they perceive as a “Tonga” party.

When he travels beyond southern province people see him the same way they saw Harry Mwaanga Nkumbula—a political leader of the Tonga people. This perception limits his ability to expand and pose a formidable challenge to the shrewdest and craftiest of them all. If elections were held today, Hichilema would still be playing fiddle to Sata.

This is Hichilema’s sixth year since he assumed the leadership of UPND and immediately received the endorsement of KK and got 25% in September 28, 2006. Many were hoping for an upward trend, but it has not been the case. He has remained in third position with a declivity performance of 19.7% in 2008, and 18.17% in 2011.

I have said it before that of all the opposition leaders, he understands Sata better. He has looked into Sata’s bloodshot and fierce eyes and seen what other opposition leaders have not. He knows how crafty and narcissistic Sata is. After the experience he had with him, it is etched in his mind that Sata is an exploiter of the worst kind.

This year Hichilema needs to figure out how to win. He needs to move his base from Lusaka to the Copperbelt and create strong UPND branches in Mansa, Kasama, and Chipata. There are a lot of disgruntled PF, MMD, and UNIP supporters to tap on in these areas. Most of all, the UPND and MMD must find a way of creating an impervious alliance.

Godfrey Miyanda/Tilyenji Kaunda

As for senior “politician” Brigadier General Godfrey Miyanda, he’s is not worth the mention. He is either a smart conman or a heartless exploiter. Same can be said about Tilyenji Kaunda. The Heritage Party is fictitious and UNIP is deceased. As for the remaining opposition parties, I shall treat them the same way the U.S. treats the Green Party.

This year an energetic and assertive leader with social and political influence, one who is charismatic enough to enlist the support of miners on the Copperbelt, marketeers and kaponyas, chiefs, and religious leaders around the country, must emerge among us and put an end to this one-party nonsense. Come on Zambians, let’s make this a better democratic country—a country in which we all have an opportunity to realize our dreams. Happy New Year!

Kabwe Warriors have sold their influential Zambia midfielder Rodreck Kabwe to Zanaco.

The talented 22-year-old moves to the 2012 Faz Super Division champion for an undisclosed fee.

Kabwe moves to Zanaco together with club mate and midfielder Richard Kasonde who also arrives at Sunset Stadium on a permanent deal.

The deal will see five Zanaco players move in the opposite direction to Godfrey ‘Ucar’ Chitalu Stadium.

They will include midfielder Ignatius Lwipa who has been on the sidelines at Sunset for the last two seasons.

Meanwhile, promoted Warriors welcome back promising midfielder Misheck Chaila who is expected to step into the role Kabwe has left.

Chaila has been on a 12-month loan deal at Konkola Blades in 2012.

Warriors have just made a quick return to the Super Division this season following their demotion in 2011.

Meanwhile, Veteran defender Laughter Chilembe says he is pondering his next move following the expiry of his contract at demoted side National Assembly.

Chilembe, a former Zambia right back, said he is yet to decide whether to remain at the Lusaka outfit after his one year contract at Assembly expired on December 31.

“I will decide the way forward soon. Right now I can’t say I am leaving Assembly because we are yet to discuss although my contract has expired,” Chilembe told LT Sports in Kitwe.

“But I have not retired, when I do that I will tell the nation.”

Prior to joining Assembly, the former Nchanga Rangers player was clubless in the 2011 season after leaving Power Dynamos at the end of the 2010 campaign.
