Arrows Short Circuit Simukonda’s Awards Party

3

Red Arrows put a dumper on Fighton Simukonda’s 2010 KCM Coach of the Year triumph after beating his Zesco United 1-0 in a rescheduled Super Division Week 11 game played at the Trade Fair Grounds in Ndola on Wednesday.

There was no left-off for Zesco poor run of results over the two week midseason break in which they have collected just one point from their three delayed games played.

An 80th minute goal scored by Arrows and ex-Under-23 midfielder Mwape Mwelwa after the ball came off his knee from a corner in a scrappy match settled affairs.

And the loss came five days after losing by the same margin again at home to ex-league leaders Konkola Blades on July 9.

Sixth placed Zesco on 20 points from 12 games have collected just one point from their three rescheduled Super Division games played during the mid-season break.

Meanwhile, Arrows win sees them go top of the table on 28 points after 13 games played this season with a two-point lead over Blades.

Arrows head into Saturdays resumption of the campaign after a two-week break with a home game against struggling fourth from bottom Nkwazi on Saturday at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka in a Week 14 game.

My resignation not influenced by political hatred towards President Rupiah Banda, Mangani

45
 Lameck Mangani
Lameck Mangani

Chipata Central Member of Parliament Lameck Mangani this mornimg said that his resignation from the ruling party was not influenced by political hatred towards President Rupiah Banda saying it was only a personal decision.

Speaking when he arrived at Chipata airport,Mr Mangani told reporters that he will officially announce his intentions on Saturday and speculations are high that the former Works and Supply Deputy Minister wants to join the opposition PF.

Earlier, Mr Mangani’s sympathisers struggled to mobilse Chipata residents to welcome him following his resignation from the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD).

Mr Mangani who arrived in Chipata district expecting residents to give him a thunderous welcome was snubbed and only a handful of people who are reported to have been
paid showed up at the Chipata airport. Efforts by his sympathisers to mobilise support proved futile prompting them to pay taxi drivers and call boys to masquerade as supporters.

And Chipata residents talked to by ZANIS said Mr Mangani should not contest the Chipata central constituency seat because he had proved to be selfish by dumping the party that made him what he is today saying he was a nobody before he joined the MMD.

Andrew Jere of Jere compound described Mr Mangani as a shameless opportunist who had failed to deliver in the MMD.

Eliness Zimba of Kapata township also expressed disappointment with Mr Mangani saying the wise should judge him by his cunning behaviour.

Ms Zimba stated that Mr Mangani should not be deceived that he had support due to developments taking place in the district because these were Government-initiated and that as area MP he did nothing.

She noted that Government had been initiating a number of developmental projects in order to facilitate the attainment of Chipata district to a city status.

Another resident Timothy Zulu of Mchini compound said Mr Mangani’s actions were shameful adding that people in the district had earlier respected him but did not know that he was actually a snake.

Meanwhile the MMD in Eastern Province has accused Mr Mangani of being an opportunist for ditching the party when elections were approaching.

MMD Provincial secretary, Ezekiel Mtonga said his resignation had brought sanity to the party saying his presence triggered divisions among members at constituency level.

Mr Mtonga said Mr Mangani single handedly picked constituency executive committee members to ensure that they paid allegiance to him.

He stated that the party was now intact as an interim committee had been constituted following the dissolution of the committee that was handpicked by the area MP.

Mr Mtonga also stated that the party had credible members who could contest the Chipata Central Constituency seat and challenged Mr Managani to contest on any other political party ticket so that he could see the strength of the MMD which he said was still popular in the province.

On Tuesday, MMD Chairperson for Elections Gabriel Namulambe and Labour Minister Austin Liato also dismissed as false speculations that they had intentions to leave the MMD.

‘Re – opening of Maamba Mine good poverty reduction step’

10

The Chamber of Mines in Zambia (CMZ) has expressed happiness at the re-opening of Maamba Collieries Limited (MCL) which will create 2, 000 jobs, saying it is a major step towards poverty reduction among the citizens.

CMZ has also said the coal from Maamba is pivotal in the smooth operations of mines in the country and its re-opening is advantageous for the mining industry.

CMZ general manager Frederick Bantubonse said in an interview from Ndola yesterday that the chamber welcomed every opportunity for the country to create employment through mining activities.

Mr Bantubonse said it was good that Maamba would create 2, 000 jobs for the people in that area.

He said coal was a significant ingredient in most mining operations around the country and that having a local source of the commodity was a welcome development.

Mr Bantubonse said since the closure of Maamba Collieries, mining companies had resorted to importing coal and that this was usually a difficult undertaking.
He said it was difficult for most mines to regulate coal stock levels because of the complexities that went with importing the commodity.

“It is not just about the price of buying coal locally but it is also about stock level controls,” he said.
And Zambia Congress of Trade Unions president Leonard Hikaumba said there was need to ensure sustainability of jobs created at the reopened Maamba Mine.

Mr Hikaumba said the labour movement would want to see that the 2,000 jobs to be created once the mine was fully operational were sustained and in conformity to the decent work agenda.

He said Zambia had agreed to the implementation of the decent work agenda which emphasised on adequate pay, respect for workers rights and promotion of social dialogue.

He called on the new owners of the mine to adhere to the decent work agenda which he said always motivated workers.
Mr Hikaumba commended the Government for attracting more investments in the mining industry that were creating jobs meant to better the lives of Zambians.

Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia also hailed the creation of 2,000 jobs, with president Joyce Nonde-Simukoko saying the union had always pressed for more jobs for the citizens.

She, however, said it was also important that quality, permanent and pensionable jobs were encouraged.
“We are very happy with the creation of jobs at the re-opened mine but it is also important that quality, permanent and pensionable jobs are created.

“The unions should therefore negotiate for quality jobs for the workers,” Ms Simukoko said.

Maamba Mines Collieries was re-opened last week by President Rupiah Banda where he said the Government would continue to implement policies, measures and programmes aimed at improving Zambia’s economic climate and the people’s livelihood.

The president reiterated Government’s commitment to making Zambia the preferred destination for capital investment in the mining industry.

He said that he was concerned about the high level of unemployment, poverty and poor business opportunities in Sinazongwe, adding that the re-opening of the mine was in part an answer to his concerns.

Exchange of words between Masebo and Rupiah disappoints Kabanda

80
Citizens Forum Executive Secretary Simon Kabanda

Citizens Forum executive secretary Simon Kabanda has expressed disappointment at the exchange of words between Chongwe Member of Parliament Sylvia Masebo and Republican President Rupiah Banda in the media.

Mr. Kabanda says it is disappointing that leaders can spend time on personal attacks against each at the expense of addressing issues affecting the Zambian people.

Mr. Kabanda says national leaders are expected to spend time talking about how they intend to reach out to the many suffering Zambians.

He says the differences Ms. Masebo has with President Banda will not provide an income to the many youths suffering in the country.

Mr. Kabanda has since urged politicians against being personal as they sell their manifestos to the Zambian people.

He says Zambians want politicians who will deliver development, not those who thrive on character assassination of others.

And the United Party for National Development (UPND) has accused republican President Rupiah Banda of not committing to dialogue ahead of the forthcoming tripartite elections.

UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma says it will be very difficult to resolve post election disputes this year if stakeholders are not willing to embrace dialogue.

Mr. Kakoma has told Qfm that dialogue is the only solution to problems pertaining to elections adding that his party supports the move by the church to hold an indaba for political leaders to iron out differences that arise during elections.

He says it is unfortunate that ever since President Banda assumed office in 2008, he has not taken a step to promote dialogue among political stakeholders in the country.

Mr. Kakoma who is also Zambezi West Member of Parliament has since urged political parties in the country to engage in constructive dialogue in the run up to the polls.

Various stakeholders have been calling on political players in the country to embrace dialogue in order to resolve differences in the political arena.

NAC against prostitution legalization

20

National Aids Council (NAC) board chairperson Bishop Joshua Banda says legalizing prostitution will be a misplaced priority.

Bishop Banda however acknowledges that certain countries depending on their culture consider prostitution as a profession.

Speaking during the grand launch of the MUVI TV 2011 season three Ready for Marriage in Lusaka last evening, Bishop Banda said the ability of people including sex workers to reform must not be overlooked.

The NAC board Chairperson who is also Northmead Assemblies of God Church overseer has commended MUVI TV for the idea behind the new ready for marriage; noting that the women involved are vulnerable in their own rights hence the need for assistance.

Councilors cited for gross mismanagement

5

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has accused suspended councilors of gross mismanagement of the council’s property.

The LCC activities were alleged to be marred with corruption and gross negligence which forced the Minister of Local Government and Housing to suspend the councilors.

Local Government Administrator Solomon Sakala claims that the council was completely run down under suspended crop of civic leaders.

Mr. Sakala told MUVI TV News that the local authority has made tremendous improvements without the councilors.

Early this year government suspended the council following allegations of corruption in allocation of plots by the councilors.

Resign, LAZ bosses told

23
LAZ President Mwenya Musa (r) and Stephen Lungu (l)
LAZ President Mwenya Musa (r) and Stephen Lungu (l)

THE Committee of Citizens has challenged Law Association of Zambia president Musa Mwenye and honorary secretary Paulman Chungu to resign from the organisation for dragging it into partisan politics.

Executive director Gregory Chifire yesterday accused Mr Mwenye and Mr Chungu of using LAZ as a platform for spearheading their personal and partisan agendas.

He accused the two of being PF sympathisers.

Mr Chifire said in a statement issued in Lusaka yesterday the partisan inclination of the two has the potential to divide the association and draw it into public odium and ridicule.

He said Mr Mwenye and Mr Chungu are contravening the provisions of the LAZ Act with impunity.

Mr Chifire said the abuse of LAZ by the two and other individuals has affected the confidence of members of the public in the association.

“It has become increasingly difficult for the general public to respect the views and activities of LAZ because of the compromised positions some individuals have taken in an attempt to mortgage the association to the Patriotic Front (PF),” he said.

Mr Chifire said the Committee of Citizens is not surprised that individuals such as Mr Chungu have come out strongly to defend their president, Mr Mwenye, over the several politically inclined statements he has issued recently because they are both sympathisers of the PF.

Meanwhile, Mr Chifire has said his organisation is saddened by the LAZ leadership’s failure to condemn the PF for barring some media institutions from attending the opposition party’s recent general conference.

He wondered why the PF prevented the public media from covering its meeting when LAZ is on record to have strongly accused the ZNBC of bias in news coverage.

When contacted for a comment, Mr Mwenye declined to speak.

Kitwe City Council Management acted unprofessionally-Kitwe Mayor

37
Some Kitwe residents in the centre of town

Kitwe Mayor Elias Kamanga has accused Kitwe City Council (KCC) management of acting unprofessionally by withdrawing his official mayoral vehicle. The Kitwe Mayor said he is disappointed that KCC management failed to follow procedure in the matter.

“The council acted unprofessionally. They are denying me the benefits bestowed on me by Kitwe residents. I am disappointed with the town clerk (David Kabanda), and I told him because they did not follow procedure. This is a policy matter. The full council meeting should have come up with a position and not the management,” Mr Kamanga said.

And Police in Kitwe yesterday recorded a warn-and-caution statement from Kitwe mayor Elias Kamanga in connection with allegations that he refuelled Patrick Mwanawasa’s vehicle with 73.4 litres of petrol worth K 635,000 on a council account.

The MMD Copperbelt Task Force and Kitwe City Council have filed official complaints at Riverside police station on Mr Kamanga’s alleged theft of fuel from the government.

Mr Kamanga and police sources confirmed the mayor’s questioning in separate interviews in Kitwe yesterday.

Mr Kamanga arrived at Riverside police station at 14:00 hours in the company of his lawyer, where police officers recorded a warn-and-caution statement from him.

“I opted to remain silent before the police officers. I told the police officers that there is nothing to talk about,” Mr Kamanga said.

Kitwe City Council spokesperson Francis Wasamunu confirmed that the local authority has lodged an official complaint against Mr Kamanga in an interview yesterday.

“We have just lodged an official complaint to the police over the fuel that Kitwe mayor Elias Kamanga gave to Patrick Mwanawasa,” Mr Wasamunu said.

The Kitwe City Council on Monday withdrew the mayoral vehicle for Mr Kamanga because he was allegedly using it on personal and political errands.

And Minister of Local Government and Housing Brian Chituwo has commended the Kitwe City Council management for withdrawing Kitwe mayor Elias Kamanga’s official vehicle.

Dr Chituwo has commended the Kitwe City Council (KCC) management for withdrawing Kitwe mayor Elias Kamanga’s official vehicle.

On Monday KCC management withdrew Mr Kamanga’s official mayoral vehicle because he has allegedly been using it for personal and

political errands.

And chief Government spokesperson Ronnie Shikapwasha says Government is disappointed with Mr Kamanga’s alleged abuse of his office, and has warned Zambians against entrusting the Patriotic Front (PF) with leadership in this year’s elections.

Dr Chituwo said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday he supports the local authority’s decision to withdraw Mr Kamanga’s official mayoral vehicle.

He said it is unfortunate that Mr Kamanga ignored the guidelines on the usage of mayoral vehicles.

“I support the action taken by council management to withdraw the mayoral vehicle from Mr Kamanga. I would like to take this opportunity to warn other mayors countrywide against abusing mayoral vehicles. They must follow the laid down procedure on the usage of the mayoral vehicles,” he said.

Dr Chituwo also said allegations that he has withheld Constituency Development Fund (CDF) are not true. He said that K39 billion was released to the Ministry of Local Government and Housing for CDF.

“For councils that have not submitted the financial returns for 2010, the ministry requested the office of the provincial local government to verify in case of abuse of the funds before such councils can be considered for 2011 CDF. Members of Parliament must tell the people that this is Government money meant for development,” he said.

And Lieutenant General Shikapwasha castigated Mr Kamanga for allegedly using his official mayoral vehicle on personal and political errands.

“First of all, this is what we are telling Zambians that when you vote for the Patriotic Front (PF) and its leaders you end up shooting yourself in the leg,” he said.

Lt-Gen Shikapwasha said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that it is unfortunate that Mr Kamanga has allegedly been abusing the mayoral vehicle.

“These people in PF are desperate and they should not be trusted with the governance of the country. I was in Kitwe recently, and I am aware about the illegal land allocation going on at the council, which is

being perpetuated by the councillors,” Lt-Gen Shikapwasha said.

He warned Zambians against voting for PF in this year’s tripartite elections.

Lt-Gen Shikapwasha accused Mr Kamanga of allegedly illegally allocating plots to some Kitwe residents.

He also condemned Mr Kamanga for refueling Patrick Mwanawansa’s vehicle with 73.4 litres of petrol worth K 635,000 on a council account.

And Zambia United Local Authorities Workers Union (ZULAWU) general secretary Noel Kalangu commended KCC management for withdrawing Mr Kamanga’s official mayoral vehicle.

“We are disappointed with what is happening at Kitwe City Council. We are told that our members are being called names and intimidated. The refueling of Patrick Mwanawasa’s vehicle was wrong and we condemn it,” he said.
