Sata’s allegations on fuel, misleading, irresponsible and provocative – Shikapwasha

103

shikapwashaGovernment has described Patriotic Front leader Michael Sata’ s media statement that President Rupiah Banda is about to hike fuel prices to subsidize ‘thieves’ involved in fuel procurement as misleading, irresponsible and provocative.

Chief Government Spokesperson Ronnie Shikapwasha says Government is saddened by Mr. Sata’s allegations.

Lt. Gen Shikapwasha said in a statement to ZANIS last evening that the statement by the opposition leader only reflects his poor understanding of running of government and his propensity to tell lies.

He said government is deeply concerned that Mr. Sata was deliberately misleading the nation into believing that prices of fuel were determined by the President.

Gen Shikapwasha stated that it was only the Energy Regulation Board which has the mandate to determine the prices of fuel and that the criterion had nothing to do with government.

He explained that local fuel prices are determined by the cost of supplies from the source and transportation among other market forces.

Gen. Shikapwasha who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Minister said contrary to Mr. Sata’s assertions, all these factors are not determined by the President.

He dismissed Mr. Sata’s allegations as regrettable and uncalled for.

Gen Shikapwasha said Mr. Sata’ s allegations against President Banda were only a reflection of the kind of leadership that Zambians should expect if he was given an opportunity to lead the nation.

He said it was clear from the statement that the opposition leader’s governance style would also involve fixing fuel prices from State House just to appease suppliers.

Gen. Shikapwasha added, “ As for the thieves that Mr. Sata is referring to in the procurement of fuel, we can only say, it takes a thief to know a thief.”

Mr. Sata is quoted in one of the daily newspapers as having said President Rupiah Banda wants to hike fuel prices to subsidize thieves involved in the procurement of fuel.

Chibombamilimo seeks RB’s intervention in Mpulungu water crisis

5

MPULUNGU Member of Parliament Lameck Chibombamilimo says he has written to President Rupiah Banda to help source for funds to avert the water problems in Mpulungu district.

And as the critical shortage of tap water in Mpulungu enters day eight (8), health officials have warned of a looming serious waterborne disease, which they say district officials might find difficult to contain.
In a telephone interview from Lusaka today, Mr. Chibombamilimo said President Banda was aware of the water problems the people of Mpulungu were experiencing.

He expressed hope that a permanent solution on the matter would be found in the shortest possible time.

“Yes I can confirm that I have written to the president to help over this matter and I decided to involve the Head of State himself as a last resort because despite several meetings and conversations I have held with top officials from Chambeshi Water and Sewerage company and the Ministry of Local Government and Housing, no tangible results have been realized.” , said Mr. Chibombamilimo.

He noted with regret that the Director of Local Government has no capacity to solve the water problems in Mpulungu, adding that it was clear from the operations of Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company that the water utility firm had failed the people of Northern Province in general and Mpulungu in particular.

“We have been putting in our best because the problem of water had been a long outstanding issue in Mpulungu. I personally have gone to the electronic media, MUVI TV, ZNBC TV. I have held several meetings, made numerous phone calls to people at Chambeshi, the Minister of local government, the director and several top officials, all in a bid to find a lasting solution to this problem’’, narrated Mr. Chibombamilimo.

He alleged that there were some forces in Mpulungu who were trying to politicize the water crisis, saying however that such maneuvers will not succeed because all avenues have been explored including informing the Head of State over the matter.

He said in his opinion, an area the size of Northern Province must have three water utility companies to share the 12 districts because Chambeshi water and Sewerage Company had failed to provide the service to the people.

And in Mpulungu, the water crisis has continued to deepen with no solution in sight as of today.
Residents who have been patiently waiting for explanations from Chambeshi water and sewerage company for the last one week have not got any and several have been seen crisscrossing the township with containers and buckets on their heads as they search for safe water points.

They have also been wondering why Mpulungu, with a mass water body in lake Tanganyika just on the door step could continue to experience erratic water supply and shortages annually.

Sources at Chambeshi Water yesterday advised residents to brace themselves for hard times ahead because the submissive pump that blew up last week and caused the water shortage had not been procured.

Meanwhile District Director of Health Lemmy Situnyama today warned of an outbreak of a serious waterborne disease if an urgent solution to the water crisis is not found.

He said Mpulungu district hospital had been adversely affected by the water shortage and is currently operating below par.

“Just find some time to visit the maternity ward, there is blood all over the place because of deliveries. The toilets are also in unhygienic condition. Laboratory tests we’re saying these are the worst affected areas because they need water on a 24 hour basis to run effectively, now with the week long water crisis…you can imagine what is happening!”, Situnyama explained.

He revealed that patient minders at the hospital have now resorted to doing their laundries directly from the lake adding however that this was a health risk.

“To cope with this crisis, we have hired the fire brigade truck from council to ferry water to the hospital but this is extremely expensive in fuels and allowances for people involved especially that our resources have diminished because of the famous financial scandals in the Ministry,’’ he said.

Dr. Situnyama said his main worry was that people were drawing water from unsafe points like the lake and were taking it directly without chlorination.

He advised that in future, water utility companies like Chambeshi Water and Sewerage Company must prioritize the provision of water to critical institutions like the hospital because such facilities need running water throughout.

Dr. Situnyama appealed to the company to quickly solve the water crisis and restore normal operations.

Lundazi PF members pass vote of no confidence

3

Several Patriotic Front (PF) members in Lundazi district of Eastern Province have passed a vote of no confidence in their District Executive Committee which they also accused of allegedly being in office illegally.

This is contained in a petition letter signed by 30 PF members from Lundazi Central, Chasefu and Lumezi constituencies and copied to the party’s General Secretary in Lusaka and the Provincial Chairman.

The petitioners allege that the District Executive Committee members, who were hand-picked in 2001, are all from Mnyamadzi ward in Lundazi Central Constituency and have failed to run the party effectively by not calling for meetings.

They further claimed that the behaviour exhibited by some members who refused the appointment of Daudi Mbeba as PF Lundazi District Political Secretary made by PF President, Michael Sata, is an insult tantamount to insubordination to the leadership of the president.

The petitioners charged that it was disrespectful to the national leadership for a district to refuse appointments made by president Sata.

The District Executive Committee members are reported to have told Mr Mbeba to go back to Lusaka and work with Mr Sata and not in Lundazi.
But PF District Vice Secretary, Patrick Nyirenda, dismissed the allegations as baseless and instead accused the petitioners of being used by Mr Mbeba to stir trouble in the party.

Mr Nyirenda also accused Mr Mbeba of imposing himself on the party as District Supervisor, when the position of District Party Organiser is for an employee of the party who receives a monthly salary and instructions from the district.

The Vice Secretary observed that the majority of the petitioners were not genuine members, saying according to investigations most of them are from UNIP.

He further disclosed that the party, in consultation with the provincial leadership, has since suspended Mr Mbeba from the party pending disciplinary action against him.

The Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO) has announced that its customers across the country should expect intense load shedding.

Corporation Public Relations Manager Lucy Zimba told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that this is because of one of its generators that was taken out at Kafue Power Station recently.

Ms. Zimba said the generator was taken from the station about two weeks ago for urgent maintenance works.

She said the maintenance works are a routine for the corporation to ensure that the power station is in shape.

Ms. Zimba said the situation is expected to normalize by mid next week after all the works have been done conclusively.

She said a total of 165 megawatts power outage has been affected as a result of the development.

Ms. Zimba has since appealed to its customers to bear with the national power utility company because it is doing everything possible to ensure that the situation is normalised.

Mid this year the ZESCO Kariba North Bank power station, was partly gutted forcing the power utility company to increase load shedding to most of its customers to cushion the loss.
