President Banda has called for peace and unity among all Zambians to enable the country continue with the success scored by the late President Levy Mwanawasa.

President Banda said his administration would ensure that the budget for 2009 targets the problems of all the Zambian people wherever they are.

He said despite all bad things and insults being hauled on him together with his ministers, permanent secretaries and other leaders, he would respect and work for all Zambians.

Mr Banda called on all Zambians to block bad leaders who want to win the presidency on tribal lines.

He called on Zambians to give his administration enough time to address the problems the country is facing as the new budget only came out about two weeks ago.

The President said this on his arrival at Mongu Airport to grace this year’s Kuomboka ceremony.

President Banda was received by Provincial Minister, Antony Mufulalali, leaders of the Lozi Royal Establishment and other high ranking officials.

Mr Banda is accompanied by the first Lady, Thandiwe, MMD national chairperson, Michael Mabenga, and Chief Analyst for press, Dickson Jere.

Speaking earlier, MMD national chairperson, Michael Mabenga, said Zambians should give President Banda and his administration time to implement his programmes and policies as he has just started working.

Mr Mabenga thanked the President and the government for the quick response to the flood situations and assured the President that no person will die of hunger as long as the MMD remains in power.

President Banda is also expected to view flood-affected areas from Libonda to Mongu.

Mr Banda is expected to return to Lusaka tomorrow afternoon.

Ever wondered why you are where you are today? Well a major contribution to your current status is your attitude. Winston Churchill once said “The optimist sees opportunity in every danger; the pessimist sees danger in every opportunity.”

Attitude is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than what people do or say. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. Some may say; if I had a good job I would have a good attitude! Isn’t it more truthful to say that if a person had a good attitude they would increase their chances of getting a good job?

Thomas Jefferson once said nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal while nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude.

What is a good attitude?

It’s a way of thinking positively that says:

* I can control my life and achieve my goals.
* I am responsible for the choices I make.
* My past does not matter; I can change my future.

Wherever you go, no matter what the weather, always bring your own sunshine.
You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control your attitude toward what happens to you and in that, you will be mastering change rather than allowing it to master you.

James Truslow Adams said Seek out that particular mental attribute which makes you feel most deeply and vitally alive, along with which comes the inner voice which says, “This is the real me,” and when you have found that attitude, follow it.

How sell yourself to others

The best way to sell yourself to others is first to sell the others to yourself. Check yourself against this list of obstacles to a pleasing personality: interrupting others; sarcasm; vanity; being a poor listener; insincere flattery; finding fault; challenging others without good cause; giving unsolicited advice; complaining; attitude of superiority; envy of others’ success; poor posture and dress.

Learn to be assertive, not aggressive. Be nice to everyone. That doesn’t mean letting other people take advantage of you, but it does mean looking for ways to get what you want-win without forcing the other person to lose.

It is possible to find win-win solutions to almost any situation (yes, there are exceptions, but they’re rare), but most of us need to learn how. We were raised on the idea of competition, where in order for me to win, you have to lose. In order for me to pass you have to fail.What we need to learn now is that we don’t have to play by win-lose rules — you can change the rules! People can only hear you when they are moving toward you, and they are not likely to when your words are pursuing them. Even the choice words lose their power when they are used to overpower. Attitudes are the real figures of speech.

Life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you … we are in charge of our Attitudes.

Government has set aside K3 trillion in this year’s budget for infrastructural developments projects.

Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister, Felix Mutati, said infrastructural development had the capacity to promote competitiveness in economic activities, adding that the construction sector had for a long time been the highest contributors to the country’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP).

Mr Mutati was speaking in Lusaka last evening during a public discussion on Public Private Partnerships in the face of the global economic credit crunch held by the National Council for Construction (NCC).

Mr Mutati said in the light of the global recession, there was need for business modules such as the Public Private Partnership (PPPs) to be strengthened by putting in place measures that would enable the private sector to thrive.

He added that government would see to it that the PPPs’ policy is passed and that the process of acquiring business licences is revised.

Mr Mutati observed that the current system of acquiring business licenses was too long due to high levels of bureaucracy at institutions responsible for the issuance of licenses, saying there was also need for the licenses to be compressed by getting rid of unnecessary levies.

He said government would therefore see to it that institutions dealing with the registration of prospect businesses are automated to improve on efficiency and reduce on costs of registering businesses.

The minister said government had realized the need to create a favourable environment for the private sector to boom, thereby creating more jobs which the country was in desperate need of.

He said government alone would not manage to attain economic growth but that it would create an environment that would promote partnership with the private sector in developmental projects.

Earlier, NCC Board chairman, Dr Francis Ndilila, said there was need for the construction sector to take advantage and implement more construction projects to create more jobs.

Dr Ndilila said the construction sector should reverse the 1970’s scenario which saw the sector create jobs four more times than now.
