Hichilema urges voters to back full UPND ticket in August polls

President Hakainde Hichilema has called on citizens to support not only his presidential bid but also all candidates under the United Party for National Development in the upcoming general election.

Speaking during a public engagement in Mongu, the Head of State said he was aware of sentiments among some voters who intend to vote for him but not for UPND candidates at parliamentary and local government levels.

He stressed that effective governance requires a coordinated team across all levels, including Members of Parliament, mayors, council chairpersons and councillors.

“HH cannot run the government alone… I need UPND MPs to make laws in Parliament,” he said, adding that development can only be delivered efficiently when leadership is aligned.

President Hichilema urged voters across all provinces to support the party’s full slate of candidates to ensure smoother implementation of government programmes.

He also discouraged support for independent candidates, insisting that leadership at all levels should come from the ruling party.

Meanwhile, the President called on aspiring and elected leaders to remain accountable to the people, warning against abandoning constituents after being elected.

He reaffirmed his commitment to continue delivering development, urging citizens to maintain and expand the support they have shown the party in previous elections ahead of the August 13 polls.

US$33 million-dollar water project launched

Government with support from the World Bank has officially launched the Zambia Water Supply and Sanitation Services in Growth Centres (ZWSSGC) Programme for Results, a US$33 million initiative aimed at improving access to safe and sustainable water and sanitation services across the country.

Speaking during the launch, Minister of Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu, disclosed that the programme marks a significant step in government’s commitment to enhancing service delivery and improving the quality of life for citizens, particularly in underserved areas.

Mr Nzovu expressed gratitude to the World Bank for its continued support, highlighting that the financing includes US$27 million under the Programme for Results framework and an additional US$6 million for capacity building and technical assistance.

The Minister noted that access to clean water and sanitation remains a major challenge in Zambia, with only about 62 percent of the population having access to basic water supply, while sanitation coverage stands at approximately 37 percent.

He said the situation continues to expose communities to waterborne diseases and negatively affects economic productivity, especially among vulnerable groups such as women and children.

“The programme introduces a results based approach to service delivery, shifting focus from inputs to outcomes, with emphasis on efficiency, accountability and sustainability,” he said.

Mr Nzovu outlined two key pillars of the initiative, including sector governance reforms aimed at strengthening transparency and accountability within commercial utilities, and service performance improvement to enhance operational efficiency.

The Minister said the initiative is expected to directly benefit over 99,000 people in areas served by Kafubu, Luapula, North-Western and Western water utility companies, with an estimated 1.7 million people set to benefit indirectly through improved sector performance.

Meanwhile, World Bank Country Manager Achim Fock called for urgent governance and financing reforms in Zambia’s water sector, describing them as critical to unlocking improved service delivery and economic growth.

Dr Fock said the initiative represents a major step towards addressing persistent water and sanitation challenges affecting communities across the country.

He said the programme is already delivering early results since becoming effective in September 2025, including the establishment of implementation units, approval of work plans, appointment of new utility boards, and ongoing development of performance improvement action plans.

Dr Fock further linked the initiative to the government’s broader Zambia Water Investment Programme (ZIP), a US$5.75 billion framework aligned with national WASH Compact commitments for 2026–2030.

“However, a financing gap of US$1.27 billion remains. The gap cannot be closed by donor financing alone,” he added.

He also called for stronger coordination among cooperating partners and increased private sector participation to move away from fragmented project implementation

Coach Oswald Mutapa says Power Dynamos must demonstrate the character of champions by beating Kansanshi Dynamos in Wednesday’s rescheduled Super League match away in Solwezi.

Power over the weekend successfully defended the Super League title with four matches remaining in the 2025/26 season.

The Kitwe giants have a 15-point unassailable lead over second placed Red Arrows.

“It won’t be easy, but it is our season to win. So, we have to go there and get the results. It will be difficult, but we have to keep on going, show professionalism by getting results, show people that we are champions through hard work, getting results and nothing else,” Mutapa said.

ECZ opens training for Southern, Muchinga election officers

Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Commissioner, McDonald Chipenzi has urged election officers to uphold professionalism and impartiality as they prepare to manage the nominations process ahead of the 2026 general election.

Speaking during the official opening of the fifth cohort of the District Election Staff Training Workshop on Nominations for Southern and Muchinga Provinces, Mr Chipenzi described the nominations stage as one of the most sensitive and foundational phases of any election.

Mr Chipenzi said the training aims to equip officers with the knowledge and practical understanding required to manage nominations, with strict adherence to the law, Commission regulations, and established guidelines.

“Achieving a clear and uniform understanding across all districts is essential to ensure consistency, fairness, and transparency in the conduct of nominations nationwide,” he said.

He cautioned that the nomination process often attracts significant public, political, and media attention.

“Any misinterpretation of procedures or inconsistency in their application can undermine public confidence in the Commission, therefore your professionalism, impartiality, and strict adherence to the law must guide every action you take,” he added.

ECZ Commissioner urged officers to pay particular attention to candidate qualifications and disqualifications, noting that these areas are often challenged and can lead to disputes if not handled with precision.

He also stressed the need for accuracy in nomination procedures and documentation, warning that errors at this stage can have far-reaching legal implications.

He added that the Commission expects all election officials to adhere to the law without fear or favour, ensuring that the nomination environment remains peaceful, orderly and compliant with electoral regulations.

“As electoral officers, you carry the responsibility of safeguarding the integrity of this process because the public looks to you not only for efficiency but also for fairness and transparency.

“You are the face of the Commission at the local level, and the public’s trust in the electoral process depends on your conduct to a certain extent,” Mr Chipenzi said.

Meanwhile, addressing finance officers, Mr Chipenzi directed them to exercise strict accountability and due diligence in managing the 2.2-billion-kwacha budget allocated for the 2026 General Election, warning that these are public money and no corruption, mismanagement will be tolerated.

He indicated that officers are the Commission’s front line in financial management and must ensure funds are properly retired and accounted for.

“So, we want to see due diligence in the way we manage these 2.2 billion budgets that the government has given,” he added.

He stressed that delays in releasing funds during critical election periods like nominations and polling day could disrupt the entire electoral process.
