Last Action Hero Departs To End Golden Age

0

How many of us remember the date October 18, 2005?

Very few of us do. The date, the moment is a now almost forgotten memory.

It was the day that legendary light heavyweight boxing icon Lottie Mwale died in Lusaka after a long battle with poor health.

On May 6 this year, ex-Commonwealth and Zambia featherweight champion Charm “Shuffle” Chiteule passed away at Kabwe General Hospital after suffering from Malaria.

Will that date in another 12 months also become a forgotten moment in time?

Chiteule, who was until his death Zambia Amateur Boxing Federation president following his election to the post last October, was put to rest at Old St Mary’s Cemetery in Kabwe on Friday, May 9 as his passing marked the end of an era.

He was 54.

Chiteule was the last surviving member of the 15-round masters from Zambia’s boxing golden age that spurned two decades from the mid 1970’s to the early 90’s

He joins fellow contemporaries in that big boxing ring in the sky led by the legendary Mwale, Chisanda Mutti and “Big Joe” Sichula.

Chiteule’s passing has left the nation without a living boxing legend in a decade and a half that has seen the solemn departure of the quartet who all enjoyed varying success in their professional boxing careers in Europe.

His professional fight record stood at 34 bouts broken down to 28 wins of which 13 were via knockouts, with 1 draw and 5 losses-2 of those defeats by way of knockdowns.

The highlight of Chiteule’s career came on May 5, 1980 in Lusaka when he won the Commonwealth title via a technical knockout over Dave Needham of the United Kingdom.

Two years later, he lost at home in his attempt at the Africa crown when he was defeated by Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson, retiring in the 10th round of the 15-round bout.

At the end of his career, Chiteule retreated to Kabwe going into business but was never very far away from the sweet science that brought him fame.

Chiteule was a constant figure present at most amateur and professional events around the country and also lent his hand as an official and organizer.

A respectable figure all-round, Chiteule was also the authoritative voice of boxing on TV and in print over the last 20 years.

His death should not be cue that his passing will become a forgotten memory in the sad manner it has affected Mwale’s troubled legacy and the other three late peers.

Meanwhile, in another 8 weeks time, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) begins construction of a multi-million Dollar Olympic for Hope Project just north of Independence Stadium in Lusaka

The centre will comprise over a dozen international standard sports facilities that will be used in part for Zambia’s hosting of the 2011 All-Africa Games.

One of the standout facilities that will be built there will be an International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) regional boxing training centre.

IOC director of International Cooperation and Development Thomas Sithole said Zambia was bestowed the honor as landlords of the AIBA regional training centre because of the country’s rich boxing heritage led by the golden quartet who were products of the amateur ranks.

The centre will be built, funded and managed by AIBA and will be the second only such amateur boxing facility in Africa after Tunisia centre.

It will be very befitting that the golden quartet’s memory be immortalized at the Lusaka AIBA Centre once it is completed as a lasting tribute to the men whose sacrifice in the square circle influenced Zambia’s selection for its location.

Chief Sinazongwe has expressed disappointment with the Mines Ministry for giving out prospecting licenses to private investors to carry out explorations of minerals in the district without the consent of the local people.

The Chief said at his palace when the Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry Director of Industry Siazanga Siakalenge and the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) Director Glyne Michelo paid a courtesy call on him.

“We also have local geologist and hunters who have learnt the art of identifying minerals, and government maps for areas where there are minerals should be shared with my chiefdom so that we can work as one,” Chief Sinazongwe said.

He said government should set up a place that should be reversed for future investment rather than offering license to people that may not have the capacity to mine adequately.

The Chief said currently most of areas where minerals are found in his chiefdom have been taken over and urged the team to consider visiting Chief Mweemba area where there were also huge deposits of coal and other minerals.

Uncooperative colleges to face closure

6

Government has said it would not hesitate to shut down colleges that fail to meet stipulated standards of operating as institutions of higher learning in the country.

Science and Technology Deputy Minister, Lucy Changwe, said colleges should ensure that they provide quality education to their students in order to benefit the country.

Ms. Changwe was speaking when she paid a courtesy call on Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Kelvin Kamuwanga in Chipata yesterday.

She said all institutions of higher learning should register with the Technical Vocation Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) and adhere to all guidelines to ensure that their learning environment was conducive.

“We are on record of saying we are not wasting time and we are going to shut or deregister those that do not follow the regulations,” she said.

Zambia may not achieve 8% growth if.., Chibiliti

26

Secretary to the Treasury, Evans Chibiliti says Zambia may not achieve the projected seven per cent economic growth rate this year if the power outages the country is currently experiencing are not resolved soon.

And Mr. Chibiliti has called for concerted efforts in immediately finding solutions to the prevailing electricity shortage in the country, saying the issue of power deficit was not only a government and ZESCO challenge, but an economical problem.

He said a prolonged electricity deficit would derail Zambia’s efforts to attain a middle-income country status.

He was speaking in Kafue today soon after touring the Kafue Gorge Power station.

Mr. Chibiliti said the delay in resolving the power crisis which Zambia and other Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries are faced with has a negative bearing on the economic prosperity of the nation and the Zambian people.

Earlier, Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary (PS), Peter Mumba, called on government to consider pumping more funds in the energy sector.

Mr. Mumba cited neighbouring Namibia and South Africa as countries that have heavily invested in their energy sectors in order to cushion the current electricity blues.

He however said, with the pace at which government, ZESCO and other cooperating partners were working, the restoration of electricity supply at full capacity would surely be guaranteed.

Mr. Chibiliti, Mr. Mumba, ZESCO Managing Director, Rodnie Sisala, senior ZESCO and officials from the ministry of Energy, and ministry of Finance and National Planning are on a 2-day familiarisation tour of the Kafue Gorge Power station.

League Preview: Buffaloes, Zesco Lining Up to Oust Young Arrows

11

Green Buffaloes and Zesco are bearing down on league leaders Young Arrows with just one point separating the three sides at the top of the table going into Saturdays week 9 league games.

Young Arrows lead the table on 16 points while Buffaloes and Zesco are 2nd and 3rd respectively, level on 15 points though the army men pip the side from Ndola to second place thanks to a better goal difference as the league enters Week 9 on Saturday.

Young Arrows host Lusaka Dynamos, Buffaloes travel to Roan United while Zesco await Red Arrows in Ndola.

Young Arrows have struggled to muster a win in their last 3 matches despite still dominating the top spot but are still unbeaten this season after 8 games played.

Alfred Mulao’s men’s last win came 4 games ago in a 1-0 home win over Zanaco in a delayed week 2 game on April 23.

Since then, Young Arrows have recorded draws against Zesco, Power Dynamos and Nkwazi in their last 3 league matches.

Dynamos on the other hand have not lost for the last 30 days in the last five matches in which they have collected 9 points out of a possible 15 points since losing 1-0 at home to Nkwazi April 5 at Queensmead Stadium.

The highlight during that same good spell has seen Dynamos collect their only 2 wins of the season with similar 1-0 victories over Green Buffaloes and Zanaco.

Meanwhile, Buffaloes host Roan at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka in search of their 4th straight league win.

Triumph over 10th placed Roan would to keep them in serious running for the top spot should Dynamos record an upset at Nkoloma over Young Arrows.

However Zesco, who will be without head coach Wedson Nyirenda who is away in Germany on a 3-week coaching workshop, know they must improve against Red Arrows after coming from behind to finish 1-1 on May 4 at Young Arrows.

Victory over Red Arrows at home in Ndola will give Zesco’s title defence some respectable credentials.

And at Sunset Stadium, Zanaco hosts promoted Nkana with the visitors hoping to record their 2nd top-flight win in Lusaka in as many games since they returned after 4-years in division 1.

Nkana celebrated their 1st visit to Lusaka with a 1-0 win over City of Lusaka in a week 2 on March 21.

But Patrick Phiri’s side will find Zanaco led by Roger Kola and Co a different prospect to the blunt of City.

In the other Week 9 games, Nchanga Rangers visit Kabwe Warriors, Nkwazi host Green Eagles and City are away at Power Dynamos in Kitwe.

2nd from bottom Chambishi and 16th placed Konkola Blades clash in an all-basement match at Konkola Stadium in Chililabombwe.

Levy Mourns Boxer Charm Chiteule

13

President Levy Mwanawasa has sent a message of condolences to the family of the late veteran boxer Charm Chiteule who died on Tuesday, this week at Kabwe Mine Hospital.

President Mwanwasa said he learnt with regret of the untimely death of the legendary boxer.

This is contained in a message of condolences also extended to the president of the Zambia Boxing Federation (ZABF) Stephen Simpemba made available to ZANIS by Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations John Musukuma.

Dr. Mwanawasa said the late Chiteule is fondly remembered for his quick foot movements in the ring which he earned him the nickname “Shuffle”.

President Mwanawasa said many who watched the late Chiteule’s fights will remember him as an entertaining but formidable boxer.

“On behalf of the government, the Zambian people and indeed on my own behalf, I wish to convey to you and through you to the bereaved family and the boxing fraternity, our heartfelt condolences on the untimely death of Chiteule. Many of us who watched his fights will remember him as an entertaining but formidable boxer,” Dr. Mwanawasa said.

Chiteule died in Kabwe Mine Hospital, Tuesday, after suffering from malaria.

The death of Charm, 54, effectively draws the curtain on the golden era of Zambian professional boxing.

Charm retired from boxing in 1984 after an illustrious professional career.

The Zambian legend belonged to the era of Lottie Gunduzani Mwale, Chisanda Kent Green Mutti and John Big Joe Sichula.

This is the group that put Zambia’s boxing flag at its highest in the 1980s.

Charm was President of the Zambia Boxing Federation at the time of his death.

At the height of his career, Chiteule challenged Ghanaian boxing legend, Azumah Nelson in 1982 for the Commonwealth and African Featherweight belt but lost on a 10th round technical knock-out at Woodlands Stadium in Lusaka.

Last year during independence celebrations, Dr. Mwanwasa honoured the late Chiteule with “The President’s Insignia for Meritorious Achievement” in recognition of the boxing glory he brought to mother Zambia and for his contribution to the development of the sport in the country.

Corruption Has Become More Widespread-Chief Justice

63

Chief Justice Ernest Sakala has said that it is saddening that corruption has become more widespread in the country despite robust efforts to curb the scourge.

He was speaking during the official opening of an Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) workshop for the judiciary in Lusaka today.

He pointed out that every sitting of the judicial service commission deals with no less than five to ten disciplinary cases involving judiciary staff in corruption related matters.

He noted that corruption has become complex and was being committed using sophisticated methods.

Justice Sakala pointed out that the foundation of corruption is human greed and desire to accumulate wealth dishonestly.

Justice Sakala further said that corruption stands as one of the biggest deterrents to growth and poverty reduction in Zambia because corruption does not only distort the economy of the country by making business expensive but also because it makes life expensive and perpetuates poverty in the society.

Justice Sakala urged the judiciary to be part of the fight against corruption.

He told the magistrates present at the workshop to strictly adhere to the judicial code of conduct and eliminate human greed of accumulating dishonest wealth.

The Zambia Congress of Trade Union, ZCTU, has accused Chief Government Spokesperson, Mike Mulongoti, of interfering with the 2008 Collective Agreement Negotiations signed between Civil Servants and Allied Workers’ Union and the National Union of the Public Service Workers.

ZCTU Vice President Sam Phiri charged that Mr. Mulongoti’s actions are blatant interference in the bargaining process.
