Mutapa Praises Bulaya For Arrows Brace in CAF Confed Win

0

Red Arrows technical advisor Oswald Mutapa has praised striker Felix Bulaya for delivering the victory in Saturday’s CAF Confederation Cup win over Young Buffaloes of Eswatini.

The fringe Chipolopolo striker scored a brace on his continental debut in Arrows 2-1 home victory over Young Buffaloes during their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round, first leg match played at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

“He did very well this is one player who can go very far,” Mutapa said.

“He can play more than he played on Saturday and I think with a bit of a push, he can be able to lift this team to higher heights.”

Bulaya struck in 28th and 59th minutes to hand Arrows the advantage to take into the final leg on September 18 in Manzini.

But Arrows lead was narrowed by Sandile Gamedze who scored Young Buffaloes lone goal in the 74th minute to cut the margin heading into the final leg.

“It is good start in that we have three points although it is still the knockout stage,” Mutapa said.

“In the second leg everyone has to fight hard to qualify.”

Winner of the preliminary tie will host Premiero do Agosto of Angola in the second round, first leg match next month.

Zamtel Applauds President Hichilema’s Focus On Digitalization

6

Zamtel has commended President Hakainde Hichilema for recognizing the critical role that the digital and knowledge economy plays in enhancing productivity across all sectors of the economy.

Zamtel Corporate Communications Manager Changwe Kabwe says it is gratifying that President Hichilema in his maiden address to the National Assembly highlighted how digital transformation affects every aspect of human, social, political and economic activities.

Mr Kabwe said Zamtel is elated that President Hichilema’s administration fully appreciates that digitalization presents huge opportunities for developing countries like Zambia.

“It is pleasing that the Presidential Speech touched on the core issues around the need to kick start the digital revolution in Zambia. The tone sets a very good platform for players in the digital space to play their meaningful role in actualizing the intentions of the government and Zamtel is ready to contribute,” Mr Kabwe said.

He said Zamtel is well positioned to play a critical role in harnessing this potential by helping the government increase the adoption of digital channels in the provision of goods and services.

Mr Kabwe stated that Zamtel, through its Innovation Hub, is ready to partner with Start-Up software development companies for youth entrepreneurs and build capability to develop innovative solutions to help deliver services in sectors such as finance, health, agriculture, tourism, manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade among others.

Mr Kabwe observed that the pledge by President Hichilema that his administration will support innovation and creativity through home grown solutions across all sectors of the economy fits in with the Zamtel corporate strategy.

He said with the widest network footprint and clearest network, Zamtel has invested heavily in infrastructure to enhance connectivity and service delivery.

“We are building over 1009 new communication towers across the country mainly in remote areas, so far we have over 800 sites that have been switched on and this is proving to be a game changer in the way people communicate and conduct commerce,” Mr Kabwe concluded.

Be cautious over importation of onions, Government advised

12

KAYPRO Research Institute, a local Agro based company has called on the government to be cautious over the importation of onions to ensure that it does not negatively compromise the market for the local produce.

KAYPRO Research Institute Director Frank Kayula said the country is able to produce enough onions to meet the local demand and that importation of cheaper onions may affect the market price of the commodity, which may not be favourable to the local farmers as the cost of production has been high.

Dr Kayula noted with concern the need for the ministry of Agriculture and food security to do a grass root assessment with farmer organizations and the farmers themselves on how much onion is being produced and the local demand of the commodity.

“It is not fair for the farmers to produce the onions and yet there is so much which is imported into the country from South Africa,” he said.

He said the government through the ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has Extension Officers who look at the availability of the food and it is high time that they are put to good use before the country starts importing the commodity.

“We have plenty of onions which are produced by the farmers in the country to meet the local demand,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kayula has attributed the rise of the commodity to high demand and low supply of the commodity.

He highlighted the rapid depression of the kwacha as one of the reasons for an increase in the price of the onions on the market.

KAYPRO Research Institute Director said government should instead start regulating the sale of the commodity by the farmers so that they do not exploit the consumers.

However, a local trader at City Market Beatrice Muwowo has noted a reduction in the price of the commodity.

“We are happy that we are now buying onions at a cheaper price than it was when the importation of the commodity was banned,” she said.

Mines’ performance impressive despite Covid-19 – Mangimela

6

North Western Province Permanent Secretary, Willies Mangimela says the mining sector has performed well in the past two years despite the Covid-19 pandemic that the country has been experiencing.

Mr Mangimela said from 2015 to 2018, the country performed well in terms of revenue collection due to increased production from the new mines.

He added that the revenue being collected from the mines is expected to grow further during the coming years.

Mr Mangimela said this in Solwezi yesterday when he officiated at a stakeholder’s campaign meeting dubbed “Copper for Development”.

“We expect revenue from the mines to grow in the coming years under the able leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema,” he said.

Mr Mangimela pointed out that the government is committed to ensuring that the spending of mining revenue is directed to specific sectors for development in all provinces.

Meanwhile, North-Western Chamber of Commerce Executive Secretary, Juliet Sakala appealed for transparency on how the revenue from the mines is being utilized.

Ms Sakala said huge taxes are being paid to government from the mines and should be utilized and distributed equally.

She is also called on the increase in shareholding for Zambian investors in the mines.

And Senior Chief Mujimanzovu of the Kaonde speaking people said North-western province does not mine copper only but gold as well, adding that there is need for information to be given on how much gold is being mined from the province.

The traditional leader said the local people are not benefiting much from the mines, hence proposing for a law to be put in place that will look at how the locals can benefit from their mines such as the giving of licenses to the locals.

And the organisers of the meeting, Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) said the copper for development campaign’s goal is to ensure citizens participation in proper use of mining revenue.

CSPR representative, Gerald Mutelo, in his opening remarks, said the aim of the campaign is also to promote inclusive policy reforms in the mining sector and the use of revenue from the mines.

Mr Mutelo added that they hope to see the use of revenue from the mines to diversify and grow other sectors such education, health and agriculture.

The stakeholders meeting was organized by CSPR in collaboration with OXFARM.

ZACCI to work with Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise

5

The Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry have pledged their commitment to collaborate and work with government to ensure that the creation of the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises is productive and yields desired results.

ZACCI president Chabuka Kawesha said the introduction of the ministry responsible for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is seen as a positive because it is capable of creating over 4 million jobs through SMEs.

Dr Kawesha suggested that the ministry of commerce, trade and industry and the ministry of finance should work closely with the newly created ministry to establish ways on how to impact local and international markets through SMEs.

He said the ministries should jointly review reforms and regulations that will enable SMEs access services and ease operations within their respective location.

In an interview yesterday, Dr Kawasha noted that the ministry should also consider decentralization as well as working closely with local authorities so that all SMEs are involved.

“Government should ensure that services, be it statutory instruments, land requirements and others are available at local level,” he added.

The ZACCI president also called on government, through the ministry of commerce, trade and industry and the ministry of finance to urgently look at plans around reducing costs of doing business in Zambia.

He recommended that government should deliberately develop routes that SMEs can use to easily access local and international markets.

“There is great potential for SMEs to supply goods and services to Congo, but the road infrastructure going to the DRC is very weak. Roads leading to major markets must be addressed,” he said.

Dr Kawesha expressed confidence that the ministry of small and medium enterprises will succeed when the challenges SMEs face are addressed.

Open Letter to Edgar Lungu Former President of Zambia

73

By Prince Bill M. Kaping’a Political/Social Analyst

Dear Sir,

After attending Church service in Chainda compound accompanied by a phalanx of news crews as has become your habit whenever you choose to attend Church gatherings, you issued some very alarming statements which border on threatening our national cohesion and security. This was in reference to President Hichilema’s choice of appointment of commanders of our security wings, and of course presiding officers of our august house – Parliament.

You were quoted as follows in the September 6, 2021,issue of News Diggers publication, “It is for you to judge who means well. Because I heard remarks in Parliament like One Zambia, One Region and that is worrying. It is a political statement, One Zambia, One Region or One Zambia, One Nation. If we see what is going on, we are worried. Seriously speaking, I think they should do more about the One Zambia, One Nation motto to ensure that it is seen in the practical implementation of policy making decisions and also positioning of people.”

With due respect Sir, it is hypocritical of you to talk about tribal balancing now when you neglected to do so 7 years you were in power! Your very stay in State House was tainted with crass tribalism and regionalism!

You are the same person that saw nothing wrong with your senior government officials issuing derogatory remarks against other ethnic groups. Did you ever censure your running-mate Nkandu Luo, and other ministers were speaking ill of a certain tribe? Who sponsored Chishimba Kambwili to fly around the country during the last campaigns to demonize the same ethnic group? Wasn’t it you or your cohorts?

In case you’ve forgotten Sir, you are the same person who as Home Affairs Minister wanted me charged for TREASON in 2012 or there about when I authored an article titled “SATA’S FAMILY FOREST EXPLAINED.” The article went to greater lengths detailing how the PF government went out of the way to appoint Cabinet ministers and senior government officials from one particular region at the expense of others. Clearly, this didn’t sit well with you since you are the apostle of tribalism, and hence you wanted me condemned to hell!

As encouraged by President Hichilema when swearing in his officials; I have taken time to scrutinize his cabinet and of course compared it with yours……..it stinks of utter tribalism and regionalism! You had completely ignored people from some certain parts of the country simply because they didn’t vote for you. What sort of father of the nation were you?

I am now listing the two examples hereunder so that citizens can make their own judgments:

President Edgar Lungu’s cabinet

You may conclude from this list that Bally has bent over backwards to ensure that his cabinet represents a national character as per promise during the elections. All the provinces are represented……this is how it should be! You must apologize for the various crimes you committed whilst in office.

WEEKEND SCORECARD: Nkana Bench Backs New Boys After Loss to Nkwazi

0

The Nkana bench is backing its new-look team to deliver after tumbling in their FAZ Super League Week One home game on Sunday against Nkwazi.

Beston Chambeshi fielded five new players in his starting XI in Nkana’s 3-2 loss to Nkwazi in Kitwe.

Some notable new faces included midfielder Jacob Ngulube who returned to the club two years after he left for stints at Kansanshi Dynamos and demoted Napsa Stars.

But the spotlight was on ex-Zambia U20 and U23 goalkeeper Bradley Mweene who has joined Nkana from Portuguese 4th division side club AD Sanjoanense.

Mweene conceded two early goals in the opening ten minutes of the game.

“If you look at the team that we have, we have new players and it takes a lot of time for players to gel so such mistakes are there in the game and what is important is the next game,” Nkana first assistant coach George Chilufya said.

Meanwhile, Nkana are off this weekend because their Week Two opponents Zanaco have a CAF Champions League game this Saturday against Akonangui whom they have just beaten 2-0 on Sunday away and are currently in transit back to Zambia from Equatorial Guinea.

Shooting incidence at Kasenseli gold mine saddening

15

Mwinilunga Town Council Chairperson, Jonathan Chinyimba has bemoaned the shooting incidents that took place today at Kasenseli gold mine in Mwinilunga district between the residents and the state police.

Mr Chinyimba who described the ongoing mining operations at Kasenseli as illegal, called for an immediate end to the life threatening clashes and shooting of innocent youths at the mine.

North-western Province Deputy Commissioner of Police, Fred Mulenga confirmed an incident where an unarmed man was in the early hours of today shot at with a rubber bullet.

Mr Mulenga added that the incident happened when the victim was in a group of others and allegedly wanted to force their way into the mine area.

Mr Chinyimba has since called on President Hakainde Hichilema to quickly engage an investor who will translate the benefits of the mine to the community through job creation before a lot of lives are lost.

‘’Mr President kindly take this issue seriously and open this mine so that people of Mwinilunga are empowered,” he said.

The civic leader expressed worry that any delay to engage a serious investor at the mine will see continued clashes between the state Police and residents who go to the mine to earn a living.

Mr Chinyimba noted that residents of Kasenseli will continue mining because of high poverty levels in the area, provided there will not be any investor engaged to create employment for the local people.

6

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary, Elias Kamanga has advised public service workers to acquaint themselves with the UPND manifesto to ensure that their programmes are in-line with the aspirations of the ruling party.

Media urged to report on alcohol abuse

4

Southern Africa Alcohol Policy Alliance (SAAPA) president, Phillip Chimponda, says alcohol can be an obstacle to national development if not controlled.

Speaking during an interactive media workshop in Kabwe today, Mr Chimponda observed that the media in the country only talk about alcohol when there are alcohol-related harms such as accidents, Gender Based Violence (GBV) and crime among others.

Mr Chimponda complained that the situation has further been compounded by the failure to implement the National Alcohol Policy which was approved in 2018.

He said his organisation and its alliance partners expect that the damage related to alcohol will be mitigated if the media would get interested and report more on alcohol related issues.

Mr Chimponda has blamed the failure to implement the National Alcohol Policy of 2018 on lack of commitment by the previous government, political interference and the lack of implementation mechanism among other pertinent issues.

He has since disclosed that his team will soon be meeting President Hakainde Hichilema to share their aspirations on the control of alcohol consumption.

He said his organisation and alliance partners were inspired by President Hichilema’s inaugural speech in which he addressed the issue of alcohol use in the country.

He stated that it is time that policy makers start seeing the consequence of alcohol on a productive young population.

He called on government to be committed in the provision of resources for the implementation of the policy.

Meanwhile, Southern Africa Alcohol Policy Alliance (SAAPA) Technical Advisor, Jonas Ngulube, said the media is a key partner in highlighting the adverse effects of alcohol.

He noted that Kabwe district is a good example of where bars operate within or near school premises while the law is very clear and forbids that.
