Government commends China Jiangxi for quality works

1

Muchinga Province Permanent Secretary Tuesday Bwalya has commended China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Limited a constructor, working on the Nambuluma/ Chinsali Boma access road under construction in Chinsali District for exhibiting quality works.

Dr Bwalya said the works done so far are of high quality which will stand a taste of time.

He said such works are commendable adding that he is confident that the contractor will continue exhibiting quality works throughout the project.

ZANIS reports that the Provincial PS said this yesterday during an inspection of the road works in the company of the Road Development Agency (RDA) and other government officials.

Dr Bwalya has since appealed to the contractor to expedite the works saying residents of Chinsali have suffered for many years moving on a deplorable road to and from the junction.

“Residents here move over 20 minutes to the junction on a stretch of 16 kilometers but if this road is worked on, things will change and it is easy to move,” he said.

And China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Limited Project Engineer Maric Kangamba assured the Provincial PS that the remaining works will be completed ahead of schedule.

Mr Kangamba said with the conducive weather pattern being experienced, works will be completed according to the time frame.

“We will also continue with the quality of works on this road, we will not disappoint the government, ” he said.

The Permanent Secretary later visited the Road Development Agency (RDA) offices where he urged RDA officials to strengthen collaborations with stakeholders to ensure consistent road maintenance across the district.

Government committed to supporting the tourism industry

Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba says the government remains committed to supporting the growth of the events and tourism industry.

Mr Sikumba notes that the government will ensure that it implements policies that will contribute to the thriving of the tourism sector.

He added that the government is also using infrastructure development to improve and enhance tourism experience for both local and international visitors.

The media reports that the Minister said this in a speech read for him by Ministry of Tourism Permanent Secretary (PS) Evans Muhanga during the Members and Industry Mixer 2026 organised by the Professionals Association of Zambia (EPAZ).

Mr Sikumba disclosed that the government is using targeted interventions such as improving tourism infrastructure in key tourism destinations.

He said this is aimed at promoting Zambia as a preferred tourism destination.

Speaking earlier, Events Professionals Association of Zambia (EPAZ) Chairperson Cisanga Mwanza says the Association is committed to professionalising the sector and strengthening standards in the hosting of events in the country.

Ms Mwanza stated that EPAZ, as an Association, has positioned itself to serve as a structured interface between industry and the delivery of national events.

“We are a growing body of professionals committed to professionalising the sector, strengthening standards, and ensuring consistent, high quality delivery across events hosted in Zambia,” she said.

She pointed out that EPAZ aims to bring about accountability in the manner how events are hosted and delivered.

Ms Mwanza noted that if Zambia is to compete regionally and globally, there is need to place deliberate focus on standardisation in national event hosting.

She said EPAZ wants to ensure that quality, safety, and coordination in the hosting of events are not left to chance, but are consistently delivered at a high and predictable standard.

Zesco United suspension raise dust

3

The decision by the Zambian Premier League (ZPL) to suspend Zesco United Football Club has left many stakeholders in local football astonished.

‎In a letter to Zesco United, the ZPL said the Ndola club has been suspended from the Super League for taking their grievance regarding ABSA Cup disqualification against FC MUZA to the public courts of law.

‎ZPL chief executive officer Joseph Chimpampwe says football disputes are not supposed to be taken to ordinary courts.

‎Zesco has taken  legal action in courts following their replacement in the ongoing ABSA Cup competition.

‎The legal action followed the controversy surrounding Zesco’s reverse fixture with Mutondo Stars that was played in the first half of the season

‎During the ABSA Cup draws, ZPL announced that, that fixture was counted as a postponed fixture despite Zesco having reached the threshold of count of 17 games at which qualification is determined

‎Zesco was ordered to play Mutondo and lost the match to the minnows, subsequently losing their ABSA slot to MUZA FC in a controversial style.

‎But experienced football writer, Mutheliso Phiri says the decision by the ZPL to suspend Zesco is a breach of FAZ Statutes.

‎”Under the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) Constitution (2021), jurisdiction over internal football disputes is expressly vested in FAZ.Article 62 provides that FAZ shall have authority over disputes between its members. This jurisdiction is exercised through established judicial bodies, most notably the Disciplinary Committee (Article 57),” Phiri wrote.

‎”The Disciplinary Committee is the competent body mandated to hear cases and impose sanctions in accordance with Article 60 (Disciplinary Measures). Any determination of misconduct, and any resulting sanction, must therefore originate from the Disciplinary Committee. While Article 61 (Arbitration) prohibits the submission of football-related disputes to ordinary courts, any alleged breach of that provision does not, in itself, confer sanctioning authority on the ZPL. It is the exclusive preserve of FAZ judicial bodies to determine whether a breach has occurred and, if so, to impose appropriate sanctions.”

‎Phiri said the ZPL overstepped when sanctioning Zesco.

‎”The action taken by the ZPL is, in substance, disciplinary. It is a sanction, and as such, falls squarely within the jurisdiction of the FAZ Disciplinary Committee.”

‎”The correct procedure should have involved the ZPL charging ZESCO United for misconduct and affording the club an opportunity to be heard through the FAZ Disciplinary Committee. The action taken is therefore procedurally flawed as it is not backed by due process,” he remarked.

‎”It is a decision taken without lawful authority, in breach of the constitutional framework governing football in Zambia, and is therefore ultra vires, null, and void,” Phiri concluded.

‎Issues of football cases going to the public  courts of law are not new in Zambian football.

‎Football administrators Damiano Mutale and Elijah Chileshe previously sued the then Andrew Kamanga led FAZ over their controversial suspension from football.

‎Currently, ZPL chairman Kephas Katongo is still under a court injunction obtained from the same ordinary courts by a ZPL member called Elijah Lungu, owner of a women’s team.

‎Lungu was disqualified from contesting elections where he wanted to challenge Katongo for the ZPL chairmanship last year.

‎Lungu has opted for ordinary courts instead of the Court of Arbitration for Sports but he has neither been suspended nor expelled as the statutes demand.

‎Almost one year on, Katongo has not functioned in his position as ZPL Chairperson because of that injunction obtained from the ordinary courts.

Football authorities are being accused of playing double standards on the Zesco case.

Government Promises UNZA Sanitation Relief in 10 Days

17

A sanitation breakdown at the University of Zambia has drawn sustained public attention, with government setting a 10-day timeline to restore conditions as emergency and long-term measures are rolled out at the institution.

Water Development and Sanitation Minister Collins Nzovu said students should begin to see relief within that period, following a series of interventions targeting the sanitation system at the Great East Road Campus. The situation escalated after severe sanitation and water problems triggered protests by students, raising concerns about health risks and living conditions.

The unrest was compounded by the death of a student who drowned in a pit that had been dug to repair a blocked sewer line, adding urgency to the response and intensifying attention on the state of infrastructure at the institution.

Nzovu, who toured the campus, attributed the sanitation challenges to indiscriminate disposal of waste, which has led to blocked manholes and system failure. He said the response would go beyond immediate repairs, with plans underway to redesign parts of the sanitation system as a long-term solution.

The redesign will include installation of new manhole covers and adjustments to improve the durability and efficiency of the system. Authorities say the aim is to prevent recurring blockages and reduce the pressure on existing infrastructure.

Emergency measures have already been put in place. These include extending operational hours at faecal sludge treatment plants and deploying water bowsers to support sanitation conditions on campus while repair works continue.

Zambia National Service personnel have been deployed to assist with clearing blocked systems and restoring functionality. The intervention forms part of a coordinated effort involving multiple institutions tasked with stabilising conditions within the set timeframe.

Zambia National Service Commander Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi has also pledged to fast-track the establishment of a pump station by Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company to improve the handling and disposal of sewer effluent. The pump station is expected to play a central role in strengthening the system once immediate works are completed.

Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company Managing Director Jilly Chiyombwe said cooperation between authorities and students will be important in addressing the sanitation challenges. She stressed the need for responsible use of infrastructure and proper waste management to support the effectiveness of the interventions being implemented.

The response at the campus has not been without controversy. During a visit to the institution, Solochi was seen distributing cash to students. The incident drew reaction from governance activist Laura Miti, who questioned the gesture and its relevance to the sanitation problem.

Miti raised concerns about the source of the funds and asked why resources had not been directed earlier toward fixing the sanitation system. She also called for clarity on the decision behind the action and whether further explanation would be provided.

Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu said he had not seen the video at the time of commenting but suggested the commander may have acted out of concern for the students. He reiterated that Zambia National Service had been tasked with addressing the sanitation challenges at the institution.

Chiengi Member of Parliament Given Katuta questioned the incident, asking why a uniformed officer was distributing money to students and calling for clarity on how the funds were sourced.

Socialist Party presidential advisor Brian Hapunda called for a forensic audit into the use of funds linked to sanitation works at the institution, raising concerns about accountability in the handling of public resources.

The sanitation problem itself remains the central issue. Blocked systems, poor waste management and infrastructure limitations triggered the protests and continue to define the response now underway.

Government has placed the intervention within a defined timeline, with progress expected to be visible within 10 days. The outcome of the works, including restoration of sanitation systems and improvement of conditions on campus, will determine whether the situation stabilises within that period.

Mutinta Hichilema health centre commissioned in Sinazongwe

First Lady, Mutinta Hichilema, has handed over a newly constructed rural health centre in Siatwiinda village of Chief Mweemba’s area in Sinazongwe District, Southern Province.

The health facility, which has been named after Mrs Hichilema, has been built with support from the First Lady of the People’s Republic of China.

The media reports that the facility comes with 21 hospital beds, five pediatric beds, three delivery beds, five wheelchairs, 60 blankets and other assorted items.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mrs Hichilema assured the people of Sinazongwe that they will enjoy quality health services, adding that the facility must be guarded jealously.

Mrs Hichilema said the health facility is a reminder of the friendship and unity that exists between Zambia and China.

“During a state visit to China in 2023, I had the privilege of engaging with the First Lady of the Republic of China, our discussions focused on improving the health and wellbeing of the women, children and vulnerable communities.

And during this engagement, she committed to support us on the construction of this health facility,” she said.

Mrs Hichilema said the friendship reflects the enduring Zambia-China partnership that has existed from the time of Chairman Mao and Zambia’s first Republican President Kenneth Kaunda.

“Today we are witnessing this vision where the community will access treatment without traveling long distances, especially our pregnant mothers,” Mrs Hichilema said.

The First Lady has since encouraged the people of Sinazongwe to guard the facility against vandalism for their own benefit.

Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Han Jing, reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Zambia in the area of health and other sectors.

He noted that the health facility is a consensus between the two First Ladies, adding that health is the pillar of Zambia-China cooperation.

“China will continue supporting Zambia and this health facility will ensure every child can come into this world in a safe environment,” Mr Jing said.

And Minister of Health, Alex Katakwe, said the construction of the health facility is a clear testimony of Mrs Hichilema’s determination to provide quality health care services closer to the people.

“Every Zambian has the right to access health services and this is a clear example,” Dr Katakwe said.

And Southern Province Minister, Credo Nanjuwa, said the provincial administration is committed to ensure primary health care services are provided regardless of how remote the area is.

Meanwhile, Sinazongwe Member of Parliament, Gift Sialubalo who is also Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, thanked the First Lady for the gesture, saying the health facility will help the people of Sinazongwe to access health services within their reach.

One Dead, Two Injured in Choma Motorbike Crash

2

One person has died while two others sustained serious injuries following a collision involving two motorbikes in Choma, Southern Province.

The accident occurred yesterday around 08:30 hours in the Madabaza area along the Namwala Road, about 102 kilometres south of Choma.

Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Hostern Habila, aged 52, of Sichoba Village in Chief Macha. Habila was riding one of the motorbikes at the time of the accident.

Mr. Namalongo also identified the injured as Godfrey Munkombwe, aged 53, who was Habila’s passenger, and Justine Muchindu, the rider of the second motorbike.

He explained that the accident occurred when Muchindu failed to keep to his proper lane and collided with Habila’s motorbike.

As a result of the impact, Habila sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot, while the two injured victims were rushed to a nearby health facility for medical attention.

Police have since urged motorists and motorbike riders to observe road safety regulations, including keeping to their designated lanes, in order to prevent such accidents.

Nalumango Dismisses Crash, Assassination Claims

4

Vice-President Mutale Nalumango has dismissed as false and malicious social media claims alleging that she was involved in a helicopter accident in Eastern Province.

In a statement issued by her Press Aide Njenje Chizu, the office clarified that the Vice-President has been safely carrying out a tour of duty to assess the impact of floods in Northern, Eastern, and Luapula provinces.

Chizu condemned what he described as a growing trend of misinformation, particularly from individuals linked to opposition groups, aimed at creating the impression of discord between President Hakainde Hichilema and Vice-President Nalumango.

He also dismissed claims suggesting that the Vice-President was nearly involved in an “arranged plane crash” intended to harm her, describing the allegations as reckless propaganda that threatens national peace and security.

“At no point has there been any attempt on her life, nor has any aircraft in her entourage experienced or come close to an accident,” Chizu said.

He has since called on law enforcement agencies to take action against individuals spreading misleading information online, warning that such claims have the potential to cause unnecessary panic and instability.

Matambo calls for action against false claims

2

Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo has urged Police officers in the province to be alert and arrest those that are creating false stories of having their body parts missing.

Speaking at a Media briefing in Ndola, Mr Matambo said those that are creating false stories of body parts missing are instilling fear amongst the people which should come to an end.

He has assured the people in the province that they are safe and that the peace being championed by President Hakainde Hichilema is still prevailing throughout the province.

Mr Matambo said the province has known and experienced peace since 2021, and that no one has experienced any brutality in the province such as being tear gassed or attacked for wearing any party regalia.

The Minister has expressed sadness that people who claim their body parts are missing, when checked are found with their body parts intact.

He added that a person was killed because of these acts, hence the need to ensure that people bringing such confusion are arrested.

Red Arrows minding their own business

3

With seven matches remaining officially in the season, Red Arrows coach Chisi Mbewe is not bothered by the one-point gap against Super League leaders Power Dynamos.

Second placed Arrows on Wednesday cut Power’s lead at the top of the table to one point after edging Nkana 2-1 away at Nkana Stadium in Wusakile.

Arrows moved to 51 points after playing 27 matches, while Power who have played 24 matches sit on 52 points.

“We are not looking at other teams,” Mbewe said in a post-match interview.

“I think for us we are taking each game at a time and I think we have targets we are working on,” he said.

On the victory over Nkana, Mbewe said not conceding first at Nkana Stadium gave the Airmen an edge over Kalampa.

“We knew that playing Nkana wasn’t going to be easy. I am happy that the team applied itself well in the match. It is a sweet victory for us,” Mbewe said.

Nkana assistant coach Josphat Nkhoma blamed the home defeat on poor defending.

“You could see the goals Arrows scored came as a result of loose marking in defence. This is the only thing we need to work on. In the striking force and midfield, we played well,” Nkhoma said.

Nkana have dropped one position down to number 12 with 31 points in 27 matches played.

Sampa’s Conviction Shows Law Is Not Selective – Imenda

UPND Deputy Secretary General Gertrude Imenda has said that the conviction of Kelvin Sampa for theft proves that the law is not selective.

Her remarks follow the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court’s decision on Tuesday to sentence Sampa, a UPND member and former Kasama MP, to three years’ imprisonment with hard labour in a matter where he was accused of theft and forgery.

Lusaka Acting Chief Resident Magistrate Irene Wishimanga also acquitted Sampa on one count of theft by agent amounting to $70,000 in cash belonging to investor Kunihiro Fugishima, stating that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

Reacting to the development in an interview on Wednesday, Imenda said people should not join the ruling party expecting to be shielded from the law. “This conviction sends a strong message that no one, regardless of political affiliation, is above the law. Members must uphold integrity and accountability in their actions,” she said.

She added that the party respects the judicial process and urged Zambians to have confidence in the courts. “Justice has been served where evidence was proven, and where it was lacking, acquittals have been made. This reinforces the independence of our legal system,” she added.

Imenda further called on political office bearers to maintain transparency in their dealings, saying it is crucial for building public trust and strengthening democratic governance.

“The ruling demonstrates that our institutions are functioning and that the law applies equally to all citizens. It should serve as a reminder to all public officials to act responsibly and ethically in their positions,” she concluded.

Mundubile Has Decampaigned Himself by Saying He Wants to Rule Like Lungu – Milupi

UPND Alliance Chairperson Charles Milupi has said that Brian Mundubile has decampaigned himself by stating that he wants to rule the country like former President Edgar Lungu.

Milupi added that Mundubile’s statement confirms there is no substance in the opposition.

On Tuesday, Tonse Alliance president Brian Mundubile said that once elected, he will lead the country in the footsteps of the late President Lungu, who he claimed left the nation united.

Responding, Milupi criticized the remark, saying it shows a lack of originality and vision. “By aligning himself with the leadership style of a past president, Mundubile has effectively decampaigned himself. Zambians deserve new ideas and leadership, not a replication of the past,” he said.

He further urged voters to carefully consider the track record and proposals of opposition candidates, noting that the country needs leaders who can offer real change and development rather than nostalgic promises.

Milupi’s remarks come amid increasing political activity as parties prepare for the 2026 general elections, with candidates outlining their vision and policies ahead of the campaign period.

I Am Offering Zambia Something Different – Mudolo

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) presidential hopeful Willah Mudolo has unveiled plans to demolish and rebuild Zambia’s major learning institutions, pledging that his government will not tolerate unsafe and outdated infrastructure.

Mudolo said that, if elected, his administration will tear down dilapidated structures at institutions such as the University of Zambia, Copperbelt University, Mulungushi University, and Northern Technical College, replacing them with modern facilities that meet international standards.

He explained that the new campuses will feature safe learning environments, quality student accommodation, and ensuite facilities, aimed at restoring dignity and safety in the education sector.

“The massive reconstruction programme will be completed within 24 to 30 months,” Mudolo said, describing it as a practical and time-bound plan to fix the country’s universities.

He assured that learning would not be disrupted during the process, highlighting plans to expand online education and provide temporary facilities for critical programmes such as medicine and science.

“I am offering Zambia something different… we will end this cycle of neglect and rebuild our institutions properly,” Mudolo said.

The announcement comes in the wake of the tragic death of 18-year-old University of Zambia student Emmanuel Bwalya. Yesterday, UNZA students took to the streets to protest after a fellow student drowned in a pit that was being dug to repair a blocked sewer system.

Mudolo said the incident was not just an accident but a reflection of leadership failures by past administrations, which left students in unsafe and inadequate learning environments.

He added that after more than 60 years of independence, it was unacceptable that universities in Zambia remain outdated and dangerous, emphasizing that his plan is not only about infrastructure but about creating a system that supports students and prepares them for the future.

Once Elected, I Will Rule Like Lungu – Mundubile

TONSE Alliance president Brian Mundubile has pledged that, if elected, he will lead the country in the footsteps of the late President Edgar Lungu, who he says left the nation united.

Mundubile emphasized that the Alliance is committed to ensuring peace, even for those who previously sought to divide the country, noting that vengeance should be left to God.

Speaking during a media briefing  while welcoming new members into the Alliance, Mundubile called on party supporters to work together in promoting national unity and development.

He urged citizens to embrace reconciliation and to prioritize the nation’s interests above personal or political differences, saying that a united Zambia is essential for sustainable progress.

“The late President Lungu demonstrated leadership that brought people together, and we must continue in that spirit. As a nation, we must focus on peace, dialogue, and inclusivity,” Mundubile said.

He added that the Alliance would not discriminate against anyone based on past political affiliations and that all Zambians would have a role to play in the country’s growth.

Mundubile also appealed to political actors to respect the democratic process, cautioning against actions that could incite division or unrest.

“Our mandate is to serve the people, and we call on everyone to contribute positively. The path to development is through unity, collaboration, and respect for each other,” he stated.

The event saw a large turnout of new members, who pledged their support to the TONSE Alliance and committed to promoting peace and stability in the country.
