MMD National Secretary, Katele Kalumba has questioned why party chairperson for Information and Publicity Ben Tetamashimba is making Presidential ambitions an issue.
Dr. Kalumba says the issue currently is praying for Dr. Levy Mwanawasa’s quick recovery.
Asked whether he has any presidential ambitions, Dr. Kalumba said it is not an issue now.
He explained that people who have Presidential ambitions have announced their intentions.
Dr. Kalumba said he has NEVER said anything against Mr. Tetamashimba and advised him to STOP putting words in his mouth.
Mr. Tetamashimba, at a press briefing in Lusaka Tuesday, accused Dr. Kalumba of using President Mwanawasa’s illness to further his presidential ambitions.
Meanwhile, Dr. Kalumba says he has written to the party disciplinary committee to examine the petitions received from provincial and district party members countrywide against Mr. Tetamashimba.

Lets face the facts, Tetamashimba is just afraid of loosing his job. He is quite indisciplined that he even has the audocity to hold press briefs instead of talking within the party. I can see that thats the end of bootleaker Teta..

Maybe it is time to form a Coalition party of the clean guys and Kick the last of the MMD out of power once and for all. The problem in MMD is that all the good guys who can run the country effectively are not “gate keepers”. They were just brought in from outside and they are not even politicians. As such they have just concentated on good governance which is good of course. Unfortunately in politics like ours. You also need to be good at governance and as a politician. But to be honest. MMD in their last convention defined their downfall. Whether we like it or not LPM is not coming back in the same position. The strong gate keepers like Mabenga, Katele, Munkombwe, Kavindele regretably will be incharge. This is reality. I agree with all those who are calling for a critical look at a possible leader that can take up presidency going forward. It is my strong opinion that we should not repeat mistakes of the past, neither should we be given a surprise candidate who turns out to be a good leader as the case with Mwanawasa. Why do i say so, currently only MMD is in all the branchs , wards of the entire country. I doubt one would find a branch or section of the PF in Kalabo district? or one for UPND in Luapula! this is reality on the ground.
PF is much concentrated in Lusaka and the copperbelt, we dont have PF in NW, Western , Southern Province.

Mulongoti in an interview in Lusaka at his Kabulonga residence said Tetamashimba’s position on the issue of succession bordered on arrogance and was devoid of humility.
Mulongoti said it was sad that Tetamashimba who had never issued any statement to wish President Mwanawasa a quick recovery was pretending to be caring for the President.
He said the party and all MMD national executive members expected Tetamashimba to exhibit a sense of humility.
“The issue of succession is nothing new. He himself Tetamashimba is on record, even advocating that President Mwanawasa must stay until 2011. But he wants to pretend now. We object to his optimism where he wants to show that he loves the President more and that he is more sincere,” Mulongoti said. “What is most unfortunate is that Tetamashimba was silent all along. He never even said or wished the President quick recovery on behalf of the NEC. We expected him to do that, but he never did that. The next thing we hear is his statement about succession being issued at an inappropriate time. And as government we are very embarrassed.”
Mulongoti also challenged Tetamashimba to disclose more people who did not care for President Mwanawasa as he claimed.
“We were hoping that he would correct himself but he hasn’t. It’s not right for any government official or junior minister to pursue a stance that borders on arrogance. I challenge him to expose more on this. What we don’t want is for him to use the President’s sickness as an opportunity for him to push whatever agenda he wants to push,” said Mulongoti.
Some MMD members also condemned Tetamashimba’s succession remarks.
Luapula Province minister Chrispine Musosha said it was inhuman to talk about the succession of President Mwanawasa who is currently admitted in hospital.
He said it was too early to start talking about succession.
Musosha said it was un-African to talk about inheriting someone who was still living.
Chisamba MMD member of parliament Moses Muteteka said it was wrong that the issue of succession had arisen when President Mwanawasa was unwell.
Muteteka said the President’s relatives had even cancelled family celebrations such as weddings and parties.
The squables over LPM’s successor in MMD is ineviatble. LPM created a leadership crisis when
(1) He suspended the elections for party Vice president
(2) He appointed a UNIP member to be Vice presidednt.
If RB was either MMD VP or A senior MMD member, by now GRZ would have invoked article 39 and followed the necessary steps to replace LPM. Constitutionally RB is the right guy to replace LPM temperarily while we await the GE. But he is not an MMD member, Thats where the problems start. The best option although highly unlikely is LPM miraculasly wakes up. But as things stand bress yourselves for a political show down in MMD. Its just a matter of time.The Dice has been cast.

I think Katele is just being persecuted because if the state had a strong case against Katele, he would have been in jail by now. Now that ‘Lawyer wama Lawyer ‘ is out of action, Katele might get a fair trial provided that judges involved in the case don’t have their own political interests. Dr. Kalumba’s cases should be dropped so that he focuses on campaigning to take over MMD and Republican Presidency.

I think the issue here is not really about Dr Katele Kalumba, it is because of his Luapula – Bemba connection that some people have a problem with. I think most people believe that if Dr. Kalumba becomes President of Zambia, he will get Dr. Chiluba and others off the hook of the persecution currently coming from the state against some members of Dr. Chiluba’s gov’t. The issue of juju does not cut it for me. If you are calling Dr. Kalumba a juju man you might as well call all traditional leaders juju people because we all know that when neccessary traditional medicine is needed for protection against the enemy of some kind. The state was after Dr. Kalumba clearly for political reasons and nothing more and therefore, Dr. Kalumba saw the need to consult traditional medicine experts for HIS protection. Such allegations need to be proven and so far no one has been able to do that. In the legal world, the say Justice delayed is justice denied.

Suspension or expulsion of any MMD NEC official can only be done by the approval of the Party President. The Government and the MMD are going to face a constitution crises in so far as descpline of members and ministers will be concerned. For as long as Mwanawasa is in ICU, no one can dismiss any erring Minister or suspend any MMD NEC officials. This is a lesson to Zambia. We should not make constitutions that fit individuals. The VP is not even acting, He does not posses any executive powers until the LPM is officially declared incapacitated.
