LCC begins to replace street lights in Lusaka

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has dismissed claims from some sectors of society that it has failed to maintain street lights in the capital city.

Council Public Relations Officer, Henry Kapata, said the council has started replacing street lights in some areas of Lusaka using the K10 billion, which the government gave to the local authority last year.

Mr. Kapata told ZANIS in Lusaka today that on the Great East Road, the council intends to replace the yellow bulbs in the street lights with much brighter colours.

He said it was sad that people think that the council did not want to see the capital city look as beautiful as it could.

He complained that some members of the public decide to vandalise street lights as soon as the council puts them up.

Mr. Kapata has since warned of stern action against those who like vandalizing the street lights.

He has since called on the members of the public to report any vandals to the council or the police, adding that the local authority would not hesitate to take serious action against such.

The Public Relations Officer has also called upon motorists to be cautious on the road to avoid hitting into the street lights that the council has put up.

Mr. Kapata also said the council can only put street lights in residential areas that have their streets named.

He has since commended residents who have resorted to put up street lights in their areas using their own resources, saying this would enhance security.

He said there was need for people from the public, private sector to work closely with the council to develop the capital city.

Meanwhile, Mr. Kapata has said the council has commenced making marking lines on the Kafue road.

He said the council has engaged a constructing company called Kaliff International Company (KIC) from the neighbouring Zimbabwe to do the job.

He said the constructing company has been given enough time to a good job on the road, warning that if it does some shoddy works, the council would look for another company to do the job.

  1. WHEN A ZAMBIAN IS SMILING JUST KNOW HIS/HER FRIEND IS IN TROUBLE BUT WHEN S/HE IS SAD JUST KNOW HIS FRIEND IS ENJOYING. ALL PEOPLE WHO WILL COMMENT FALL IN ONE GROUP CITED.

  2. Mr. Kapata, you speak very well on LCC projects especially during traffic watch but little comes out of your talk. Secondly do we need KIC from Zim to do the job, this is where we have missed the point in Zed, we are busy empowering other nationals in our own land. Who will have the power the foreigners of course, there must be a deliberate policy in ensuring that Zambians are part of such contracts directly or indirectly

  3. do they have to get some people rom different sectors for them to change street lights?

  4. Morning all
Lisa, since when did street lights ever appear mu ghetto? I have no hope for street lights in my Garden compound. Besides, wouldn’t it look ridiculous for an overgrown footpath (kabili that is what the township roads are) full of mud like in Garden township spotting streetlights?
    Good day all

  5. Zimbambean company….for marking white lines on our roads????? God help us. ninshi wat will Zambians do kanshi. whats wrong with these people placed in government. I suggest we start a PROUDLY ZAMBIAN campaign. importing only creates wealth for foreigners. **==

  6. Let me clarify before am attacked. Usually in the past street lights were erected in suburbs and esp. on main streets Kafue, great east and north roads. I am reap from Chilulu compound and I bet those lights wont get there. I am not implying ghetto in a bad way but just areas usually forsaken

  11. #21 Its because he is given some Talk Time by MTN. But he must prove himself. I thiink he is just let down by his bosses at the council. Will give him the benefit of the doubt

Development is not a simple process its a multi dimentional process involving political ,social and economic aspects.I understand we can make very important contributions to the growth of the national economy but labour is not the only missing ingredient.

  48. #70, ladies are always comparing the kind of love they receive and that which their friends receive. So if you have no cash like me, Whoops, they will leave you for a guy who drives a better van.

  49. Terminator

DRIVERS SHOULD BE SUEING LCC FOR DAMAGE TO THEIR CARS, COS THOSE POT HOLES ARE SO BAD.

  50. Carolyn

The problem is, Ladies like their men to tell them ” I love you” each and every second! :x. But thats unlike of a man! unless inga balimulisha!

  51. #99. Lets not use such language here. This is a public forum and we need sanity. Such language portray a picture of where each one of us comes from or his behaviour. No one here is interested in such language.

  52. Luapula fish #101 it was just a question, but you have answered it by posing more questions to it. Just answer my question sir.

  53. Baby C the entertainment was great…..as usual. Just that I entertain myself most of the time. I wish I could have a good samaritan to do the ENTERTAINING

  54. SISTER

These days good samaritans want a pay in kind after an entertainment! you are better off alone!

  55. It is a long belated move. Where was DISS / Council and RDA all this time? The Directors of the three Institutions must be replaced especially RDA being the mother body. Anyway his time is up and can this position be made open to the external world for us to get quality material to manage our Road Network? And Council ensure u maintain the lights ka!!!!! And fellow bloggers comment on the article at hand not, amairrele. Chao

  56. Do we need a foreign compamy to come and mark our roads with white lines sure. Some of these things should be limited to local companies.

  57. #108.Sister just use finger dear! Some good samaritans are bad boys you’ll wish you’d stuck to your toys.

  58. #108 Baby C u sound so lonely and have given up on getting married from your tone. Am I speculating?

  59. i just hope those lights won’t be too bright for our drank drivers coz pa zed three in evry five motorists esp on wknds are senselessly drank. don’t you know that booze na malaiti bapongoshi? viva black streets!

  60. kzn, uli wabufi. How about that Lady who rolled into the side drain. Did u c the post of yesterday or is it today’s.

  61. # 111 and 114 are on the point. However, Zed engineers are to blame as well. How do they explain the melting of sabina – Mufulira road, the patches on the recently constructed Luanshya by pass road and many more failures unnoticed country wide. Do we have the right pipo in these institutions or are mere rubber stamps, maybe its just about time we had new heads in these institution. By the way # 111 I read in the post, Mbita Chitala is eying one position of Chairman for RDA, I hope change comes. Engineers be practical no more theories.

  62. 23 Jenks I want to personally go to the affected areas to check if the works are really under way. I hate it when people lie to me on such progressive issues. If nothing is being done by Friday next week, I will challenge LCC’s Henry Kapata.

I will also want to know if the load shedding will affect the street lights, because it will defeat the whole purpose.

  63. I dont want to demonise councils, but i hope the think tanks will go back home to practise these principles. **==

  64. # 43, i think you’v even lost all your finger prints in tring to keep yourself warm. And plz dont blame the weather, you are just a musterbation addict. Silly you.

  65. #118 natcase, so u think that lady rolled as a result of poor lighting, iyooo! she was from seeing someone’s husband. women world over are known to be very gud drivers. they don’t roll that easily. open yo eyes

  66. this is very interesting topic. Thanks to the good idea of putting street lights in part of lusaka. Nomba marking of roads really, that does not need a foreiger to mark. Pantu even those ba kaponya in lusaka town when mobilised to do the job they can do it. The only problem with our GOVT is that they want to give a different face to Mugabe that they are still involving his people. If young men of zambia cannot even be recruited for road markings, what jobs will they do that dont need papers or qualifications mwe bantu??? Ingineers could be there and just tell our zambian boys to mark epela. What sort of empowerement is this to the locals? I think some of these brain matters are black. dead!
