  1. AND YET ALL THESE VEHICLES PASS THRU POLICE CHECK POINTS………..FINGERS SHOULD POINT AT THE POLICE OFFICERS WHO ALLOWED THIS BUS WITH OVERLOADED PASSENGERS :o

    • Its not the police to blame. Its us the Zambians. Why do we do wrong things and wait for the police to correct them? Why do we jump onto over loaded trucks? Why do we allow drivers to over speed? Havent we shoulted at those who have tried to reprimand them ati niba mawanu? If you dont want police officers to be corrupt on the road, dont commit traffic offences. Chapwa. Iam not a police officer but my experience is that we are always wrong. My vehicle is ever road worthy, I carry my licence, observe traffic rules and when I approach a roadblock, Iam happily meeting government officials. I tease them if I want and am on my way. Thats the way it should be. ITS OUR FAULT.

  2. Lsktimes can you show some discretion with the pictures of the bodies, these people had families for goodness sake.

  3. LT, thanks for the photos at least; we Zambians away from home can actually see what’s happening back home. There’s really nothing great about Great East Road anymore, its a sad picture of the same old road of 47 years ago when we got Independence. I doubt very much if Bwesani Lupiya can do much even if we gave him a second mandate. What we need is a leader with a “WHIP”, a leader who is ‘ruthless’ in doing things despite complaints from the people; some body who is action oriented, aggressive and above all, a Zambian by heart, (not these Nyasalandas masquandering as Zambians. They have let the country down a great deal by stealing from the pipo. Shame on us…..

  4. So stupid human sacrifice acts have not stopped ehh? ati accident lyonse ni kavulamungu and some weird bus, guys such are not normal accidents coz too much blood spilt will one day call out to seek retribution

  5. This is where you see the lack of social services for the ordinary. Who says the dead do not need respect. At least ther should be seen to be sanity and proper handling of the dead. Body bags would have been nice. Ba kapokola!!! mwasebana with your loyalty….. Vote wisely bane

  6. Very sad for poor Zambians, this really shows how corrupt the police are as they have roadblocks everywhere. How did this happen if you truly inspect the buses.

    Sad indeed. M.T.S.R.I.P

  7. This is in indeed a very sad day for the country.my prayers and thoughts goes to the family of the deceased.May there souls rest in Peace.nearly 50years after the so called independence zambia does not have even single motorway. shocking! honestly this can be avoided in a country with better road network.lusaka international airport is a shocking shame!.its just like a rural air strip and yet people like bwezani banda had oportunity to see worldclass air ports like heathrow in london or oliver tambo in johanesburg! and pretend they saw nothing! shame on you! comon guys we have to do much beter than that to avoid un nessesary deaths and embarasements.

  8. Like they say on discovery channels: Accidents dont just happen; they tend to be a critical chain of events that are – ignored in the case of Zambia resulting in serious incidences. When one argues for a minimum dual carriage way, they are called all sorts of names and that they are a PF Kaponya. Having driven on this road, I can assure you that one needs to be a very patient and skilled driver to reach their destination safely. Drivers are so careless, have little regard for life, they are on phones through out, yet they have a single lane each way!! If you wish to over take, you might not manage for over 30km because some user has been struddling the road with impunity; the training is pathetic; the result?

  9. We so much believe that good roads will be built in an election year; after borrowing billions of dollars from some rich country. Yet if we took a step by ste approach; relieving pressure or bottle necks say every after 30KM we do a dual carriage for 5KM; accidents would start reducing. If we say we can do it, we are told BaKaponya ta mwajoba. Now ba educated, see how you have failed Zambia? A country that does not respect engineers will always have such avoidable problems. Yes you might argue this is a one off; but check Kitwe Chingola road? Lusaka Kabwe; and Kafue Mazabuka? Worse we do not learn from mistakes at all. My argument has always been that there is no correlation between education and the decision making process in Zambia. we are our own worst enemy

  10. surely the dead deserve respect to be piled up like that is beyond inhuman, there is a reason as to why we are diffrent from animals.i suppose these images have not been circulated to the wider public to save face.we should be rubbing such tragic occurances in the faces of our politicians so they can feel ashamed and account for what it is exactly they do in goverment.

  11. We speak based on data; MMD 20 years of neglect has exacerbated the infrastructure dilemma Zambia has been having. Unfortunately the result cannot easily be linked to poor government performance by the masses who vote. Seasoned engineers will agree with my analysis that unless a country has total infrastructure managers in government such accidents will be getting worse as traffic increases on Zambian roads. My condolences to the families; Sad because the solutions have been there; Kaunda trained us to develop Zambia, yet tu politician never respect our technical know how to parttake of that development due to their political mediocrity. Tu politician mwaba amalobo ba filaka.

  12. Please imwe ba LT I know that you want to enlighten us on the accident. However please remove the last picture. It is not right that they piled up the bodies like that. Neither is it right for LT to display them. Put yourselves in the families shoes seeing your loved one in heap like a sack of potatoes.

  13. Terrible…please remove the photos of the bodies, the wreckage photos are distressing enough…how can you stack bodies like that in the morge!!

  14. The driver of the bus fu.c.k.e.d up big time. The position of the bus tells me that the bus was overtaking and collided the with truck head on and this ***** was flying going by the way the bus broke into pieces. The bus owner must be caged. The 25 year old drivers should not be allowed to do long distances, In KK era even though I was boy, I can still remember that the drivers were old, experienced and responsible men. Not this dagga smoking bafoons who licences from the streets.

  15. #14 to #15

You got a point there. I drive on the N2 Road in Eastern Cape lot and your suggestion is what is implemented there. What they have done is have a few section every 30 Km where there is a dual carriage way to allow over taking and there is also a large section of yellow line to allow motorist give way to those that are fast , this can be implemented in Zambia without braking the bank

Dual Carriage way for 540 km is just not economic as SATA is now claiming. Is he going to give Dual carriage way to ever Zambia roads. I think the old man is just politicking.

  16. WE EXPECTED TO SEE A MOBILE HOSPITAL AT THE SCENE OF THE ACCIDENT, ADMINISTERING FIRST-AID……….OR IS IT THE SAME OLD EXCUSE OF ‘NO FUEL’?????????…….WE CHALO CHA ZAMBIA WEEE!!!!!!!!

  17. LT, the word is SENSITIZE, not “sensitive”!
You are MISTAKEN to think that people after seeing these photos will be afraid to overload or over speed! It has been tried before, & all research points to the fact that it doesn’t work.
Reasons being 1] The targeted people, may not even see them!!!! so pointless!! 2] People speeding/overloading at time of doing so, believe it won’t happen to them, & for most, it won’t!!! 3] LT editorial team SHOULD HAVE RESPECT FOR THE DEAD!!!! How do you think the families of the deceased will feel, displaying their loved ones the way you have??? Just to make headlines! THE BIGGEST MEDIA SCANDAL, currently ongoing, is about HOW THE PRESS HAVE TREATED THE DEAD & THEIR RELATIVES (In fact NOT AS EXTREME AS YOU!!) They simply listened in to conversations.

  18. This is what PAZA should be addressing – THEY SHOULD IMMEDIATELY POST ON THE BLOG TO GIVE US THEIR POSITION ON THIS PUBLICATION!!!
IN such an instant, before publishing, CONSENT should have been obtained – FROM THE NEXT OF KIN!!! I wouldn’t be SURPRISED IF YOU ARE SUED OVER THIS ONE, & RIGHTLY SO!!! Kabwela was hauled to court, even though she had consent!
SHIKAPWASHA should indeed be having a CHAT WITH YOU BOYS!!!

  19. When we say the development proclaimed by RB and his servants is a farce. Some learned bloggers insult us as Kaponyas etc. The main roads in Zambia are terrible. They are death traps. All those who use these roads will agree with me. But we find people hopping from one diplomatic mission to another arguing because they never use those roads. They have abandoned their relative in rural areas and assume that all roads in Zambia are like portion  from town to the airport junction. Even Zimbabwe, the country with no access to some financial institutions for more than 5 years now has better roads and infrastructure. How on earth can you pile human remains like that in a morgue?

    • say mmd govt of the past 20yrs to include cronies like sata, mulongoti, nawakwi, masebo and all others who now want to look like saints, or angels at the right hand of the Father.

  20. Road transport sector in Zambian is very pathetic, horrible and nasty, police officers are too incompetant to understand their job, its high time Zambia came up with laws to prevent this reckless things to happen again. God service us.

  21. No beds in hospitals? Is this what is called a hospital?? Where is the development RB and his blind followers always singing about?

It’s all bcoz of corruption in Zambia why this is happening-if there was no corruption, the police would not have allowed this bus to beat all the numerous road blocks which are only there as a means of survival for our poorly looked after police officers. Shame RB, VIVA SATA!!!!

  22. This loss of life is not warranted at all. Bus operators and other public transport operators need to employ persons with minimum level of college education.Secondly both operators of the truck and the bus involved in this accident must be sued for compensation even if it means them closing their businesses. Thirdly drink driving or taking illicit drugs when one is driving should be a non bailable offence and should carry the same sentence as armed robberies or there about.

  23. #21 good poit.where is the mobile hospital in eastern province. The great east road is not bad though you need good drivers. Driver is to blame. The police who were in the bus are to blame. The bus owner is to blame. The people are to blame for tolerating overloading when there are too many buses. The public should be empowered to text the police imergence phone line and report overloading and driver bad behavior including overspending and drunkenness.

  24. Wasting money on mobile clinic, if there was a hospital with good facilities those bodies would have been kept properly. Shame on the Government, they even forgot some bodies were buried under the trailer. Thanks for our Preisdent Mr Sata for passing by. The police have to revisit this over loading of passengers.

  25. IN A MIDDLE INCOME COUNTRY….. BODIES OF HUMAN BEING HIPED LIKE BAG. VOTE WISELY. AND LT PLZ SHOW RESPECT BY REMOVING THE PHOTO OF BODIES AS IT DOES NOT ONLY EMBARRASING YOUR SPONSORS WHO DECIDED TO BUY MOBILE HOSPITALS INSTEAD OF UPGRADING EXISTING FACILITIES BUT ALSO SHOWS THE LACK OF RESPECT FOR THE DEAD

  26. LETS NOT LIE. ZAMBIA/MALAWI BUSES DO NOT BELONG TO GBM…..IF THEY WERE BY NOW THE GVT COULD HAVE EVEN GRABED HIS LICENCE TO GAIN POLITICAL CAPITAL

  27. The twovers who caused that accident if their bodies were tested,; I am pretty sure 1000 times over the Kachasu limit. Food for thought for the Zed police if ever they exist!

  28. BEING A PUBLIC TRANSPORT DRIVER SHOULD BE TAKEN VERY SERIOUS IN ZAMBIA. COLLEGES FOR SUCH SHOULD BE SET UP AND ONLY THOSE THAT OBTAIN CERTIFICATES FROM THOSE COLLEGES SHOULD BE ELIGIBLE TO DO THAT. THEY NEED NOT LESS THAN ONE YEAR CLASSROOM LESSONS INCLUDIN PSYCOLOGY AND COMPLETE TECHNOICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE BUS. MINIMUM AGE SHOULD BE 30. LOSING LIVES LIKE THAT IS AS GOOD AS MURDER: THE OWNER OF THE BUS SHOULD RECEIVE SEVERE PUNISHMENT.

  29. I used to go to school in Eastern Province and I always used to breathed a sigh of relief every time we passed Nyimba or reached Chongwe as this road is twisty and hilly very dangerous, adding dual carriage  would reduce accidents but only slightly as it will only just increase the speeding two fold. The problem is the bus drivers who have a cavalier approach towards speeding and are always racing towards Chipata at neck break speeds. Why not make it more costly, then incorporate more training in acquiring that PCV/ PSV license and also deduct points or suspend the license and charge the Bus Companies hefty fines if their Bus drivers are breaking the law.

  30. Cont’d
Only then will drivers and operators think twice as they have invested heavily in their professions and them.
Looking at these photos honestly if I was a leader I would be ashamed just like the Chinese PM is at the moment after the high speed train accident that claimed 45 lives at least in China Emergence authorities have the fuel to reach the sight of the accident.

  31. Ba President Banda if you have access to the internet please tell us sir… Is this the middle income you preach about the one that is tattooed on your fat pot-belly? Since now you’ve got a honorary doctorate please explain to us articulately. Where are those Economists when you need them let them collect data and give forecasts….
In developed countries 10+ people losing lives on a road accident and there will be a Public Inquiry..

  32. I see even No. 5 Mr. Capitalist – 3 E’s steering economic growth has empathy and even says “This is sad. God help us.” What he should really be saying is “God help RB.”

  33. The RTSA Road Traffic Act No.11 of 2006 should be repealed to enforce PSV Drivers conduct and impose stiffer fines for careless driving, drunken driving etc. These type of accidents will continue as drivers are allowed to drive long distances without rest since the law is weak in this aspect. Drivers drive from Chipata to Lusaka and proceed to Livingstone or Copperbelt without any rest period.

  34. Lord have mercy on the poor souls! LT thanks for giving us an imaginative insight of the road carnage we read or hear about. I sympathize with the anger and frustrations of the commentators but at times it is good to bring to the fore the “raw” data to drive the point home! The pictures tell a clean story about the state of institutions at play; transport, roads, health, police/RATSA etc and the need to jack these up! We truly need a no nonsense action oriented WHIP to get things done! Mind you cholera is wamuyayaya unless people for their own good get whipped to construct toilets and adopt hygienic standards. Responsible institutions must consider seriously the genuine concerns and proposals to curb such disasters by subscribers

  35. Same dishonest men and women regrouping to cheat the poor Zambians that they can improve things…..oh my GOD!!!!!!!!!.

  36. #50 Last sentence is an appeal to institutions mandated to provide various social services if they do read LT to seriously consider adopting some of the proposals the distraught contributors to LT raise for they exhibit genuine concern towards finding solutions to the general well being of mother Zambia

  37. WE NEED HAVE THIS ROAD TURNED INTO 2 WAY LINE OF EACH SIDE OR MORE WILL DIE.THIS WHAT THE GEVRNMENT SHOULD TALKING ABOUT AND NOT SATA EVERY TIME.

  38. I’m lost for words, it’s like looking at images from a war zone, may be even worse. May the Lord be with the families affected by this.

  39. Where were the Police officers manning the never ending POLICE CHECK POINTS and the TRAFFIC POLICE?Please do away with MOST of these PERMANENT POLICE CHECK POINTS and the division of TRAFFIC POLICE.These guys are so corrupt such that their interest is staffing their pockets at the expense of HUMAN LIFE PROTECTION. The check points have been turned into PAY POINTS.Mount ROAD BLOCKS when necessary.Take for instance the CHILILABOMBWE TRAFFIC OFFICERS,I have traveled both the length and breadth of Zambia, but I have never come across UNFAIR and CORRUPT OFFICERS like the aforementioned. Please do something.

  40. If LT didn’t show the picture of dead bodies,we wouldn’t know that the bodies where actually dumped on the floor and we would not begin to question about the mobile hospitals and other things that we expect to see in such a situation..so i say LT was right in putting up the picture of the dead bodies.

  41. Thats the kind of turmoil they want us to go back to… My name is Phiri you wont see me in Zed anytime soon.

  42. Passengers are also to blame in these buses. There are many buses shuttling between Zambia and Malawi. Why should you allow yourself to be cajoled into jumping in an already overloaded bus? I have at times stopped to blast careless minibus drivers and have gotten the end of a tongue lashing by the passengers when clearly they stand to lose should anything happen. We are just too casual as we go about our business….why should two people accept an extra passenger on a seat meant for two?

  43. Drip is the only thing that hospital can afford from the look on these pictures. Chiluba’s funeral’s gobbled up millions but we cant even spend a thousand to buy beds for that hospital.SHAME.

  44. Stop this childish behaviour of blaming the government whenever some stupid individual has made a calamistic mistake. Even a fool can gauge how fast they should drive taking into account the condition of the road. The president of the country does not come into the equation. Drivers should reduce the speed. On my trip from Lusaka to Mongu I witnessed how fast bus drivers were driving. Responsibility should fall to the individual drivers.

  45. For those who lost there loved ones in this accident may God accompany them and may the souls of those departed rest in peace.

  46. The speed limits on Zambias roads are crazy. In luskas residential areas like chelston you have 80km/h ! on those bad single carrage ways you have 120! crazy!

    • Monica, what a way to go sure. I had no idea that Monica was in this bus. You were the friend to my children who gave them wisdom. I will always treasure how you saved their lives. God knows best. God knows why you had to go like that, so sooner than your time. May your Soul rest In Peace. It’s so painful to hear how you were found, head open, without an eye, on top of other bodies, face down, hands clutched together “in prayer”. The police have a lot to answer for. This money they collect in exchange of human lives, will not take them to heaven but to hell-fire! G–o–d Help Us!!!!

  47. :((
My mother Monica Kirk was one of the people killed in this tragic accident. I flew out to Zambia and buried on the 1st of August. I knew that the mortuary situation was bad, but to actually see it is terrible. She had gone to pick up workers on the Malawi border and was only out in Zambia for about a month trying to finish off a project. I feel robbed of a wonderful, intelligent, caring and hard working mother and grandmother for my children. I hope these bastards get done and that the government implement rigorous checks on these bus companies. I feel so angry and sad, as nothing done will ever bring her back, but hopefully things can change for others- people who have no choice through work etc but to use these dangerous roads.

  54. Just came across this article and it is shameless on so many levels. It does make its point felt but it does so at the price of the families of these poor souls.
The problem as I see it is not the road blocks them selves, it is the insulting low standards that police staff live in all of East Africa. If you live just one step above village level and your tasked to represent the law, what will the outcome be,,,,, I think its obvious.
These police staff are asked to live in poverty and at the same time are suppose to have unwavering loyalty. Reality does not work this way, you will always feed your family first. and this is the result.
