The United Party for National Development says it will not be part of calls for President Rupiah Banda to step down because of parentage issues.
Deputy Spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa says the UPND wants to champion issue based campaigns ahead of the September, 20, elections.
Mr Mweetwa says the UPND is ready to meet President Banda and the MMD in this year’s elections.
Mr Mweetwa was speaking in an interview with ZNBC News in Lusaka on Wednesday.
PF Intentions
The Patriotic Front (PF) intends to petition several international bodies over the parentage of President Rupiah Banda.
Party General secretary Wynter Kabimba says the PF will write to the African Union, SADC and the United Nations challenging president Banda’s parentage.
Mr Kabimba was speaking in Lusaka on Tuesday.
And MMD National Secretary Richard Kachingwe says it is sad that the PF wants to politicize the parentage of president Rupiah Banda at the expense of addressing issues affecting Zambians.
Major Kachingwe has urged the Patriotic Front to concentrate on issues of development instead of cheap propaganda ahead of next month’s elections.
And the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions-ZCTU says it is politically insane for the opposition to cast doubt on President Rupiah Banda’s parentage.
ZCTU Secretary General Roy Mwaba says people doubting President Banda’s parentage should be condemned because the head of state has served the country in different portfolios before assuming office as head of state.
Mr. Mwaba says it is unfortunate that some politicians raising uncertainty over Mr. Banda’s parentage worked with him at state for many years in the UNIP era.
He told ZNBC in an exclusive interview that President Banda’s parentage is not an issue as far as Zambians are concerned, because the head of state is truly Zambian.
Mr. Mwaba has called on political parties to base their campaigns on real issues affecting the people and not on personalities.

Why this pertinent issue of Presidential Candidate’s parentage which is in The Constitution of Zambia would not be addressed beats me. What is the point of the Constitution then? PF Kaponyas may not like this but the UPND are wise in this matter. All they are saying that it is not part of their campaign plan to descredit others on the basis of the nationality of their parents. They take this stance even though they know that of the three front runners, their candidate is likely to be the biggest winner in the event that both PF and MMD lodged and won their cases with which legal bodies. Sata is not devoid of accusations of foreign parentage/roots himself. Besides, this is very cheap propaganda in this day and age. This is an issue for those that are strong minded and not the meek ones like HH. Zambia is a nation that was born out of sweat by those that paid heavily through blood and torture by the colonialists. And the constitution is the only safeguard for its sovereignty and must be adhered to. Two things come up with regard to Mr Banda.
1. He was not born in Zambia but Zimbabwe from parents that migrated to Zambia as he has failed to refute Ambassador Milton Phiri’s statements.
2. Did he lie under oath that both his parents were Zambians by birth?
Now that has not been ascertained right now, but I hate to see Zambia being, by default, a colony of Malawi or Zimbabwe. When this issue was brought up by Ambassador Phiri, it was incumbent upon our Chief Justice to have looked at it. He failed.

The sister she was visiting was RB’s mother. RB has never denied living in Livingstone. In short Dr. Aleke Banda and RB ‘s mothers were sisters. PF leader, Michael Sata, has charged that the deplorable poverty levels that traditional leaders and people of Eastern province have continued being subjected to, was clear evidence that President Rupiah Banda was not Zambian.

Zambians who worked in Wankie (now Hwange) in the 1940s-50s were to learn that this Mine Town had a diversity of people that embraced Zambians (Bemba, Ilas Kundas, Lozis, Luvales, Ngonis, Tongas), Malawians (Chewas,Tumbukas, Yaos) and the Tanzanians (Mwachusas being prominent). This trend was also reflected on the Copperbelt’s Northern Rhodesia. Therefore, the migration of Sata’s parents from Mbeya to settle in Mpika is NOT surprising. In this regard Sata himself is ‘100%-non-Zambian’. There is no part of Northern and Luapula Province where the name “SATA” features repeatedly. Such names as Musonda, Mulenga, Chanda, Kasoma are very common in Zambia. When Sata dies, this will mean the final deletion of this foreign sirname from the archives of National Registration.
