The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) has openly annonuced that it is ready to sponsor demonstrations and civil disorder to protest the suspension of the three judges in Zambia.
The party has also opposed the subsequent setting of the tribunal to hear the judges’ cases and called for Malawian judge, Lovemore Chikopa to Malawi go back to Malawi following recent adjournments to the appeal hearings against the tribunal.
UPND political advisor to the president Douglas Siakalima made the announcement during a an event in Lusaka where 400 members from the MMD led by former Lusaka Province chairperson, William Banda joined his party.
Mr Siakalima said the party would protest the suspension of judges Philip Musonda, Charles Kajimanga and Nigel Mutuna.
“We must mobilise this party. This party must be a mass party. There is going to be chaos in this country if the PF is not stopped, there will be chaos in Zambia. And I am not joking, I am just warning you,” he said.
My advice to Judge Chikopa is that he should go back to his country,” he said.
Earlier, Mr Banda said his decision to join the UPND had caused severe harm to the former ruling party, especially in Lusaka.
“My joining the UPND has sent shockwaves to the PF and especially the MMD because I have brought with me prominent people from all structural levels of the party at the provincial level. We want to move the UPND forward and strengthen the party from the grassroots,” Mr Banda said.
He said despite the criticism over the defection to the UPND, he would remain committed to boosting the opposition party’s performance ahead of the next general elections.

Some statements made by UPND leaders leave a lot to be desired. Calling for civil disobedience means militant protest and organized forcible resistance, this I think is crossing the line and giving ammunition to Sata to cage these leaders. Demonstrations are better of left to activists. Furthermore, UPND , I think was to eager to embrace the notorious and belligerent Vigilante #1, William Banda to the chagrin of many people. People are still scratching their heads on this decision.

This is the beginning of the end of the UPND. Zambians know that our Judiciary is rotten to the cole. Even after suspending the three Judges, our president his excellence Michhel Chilufya Sata refused to retire Judge Musonda so that the tribunal could do its job before any one gets retired or fired. I know that the Presidents is keeping the chief justice for the same reasons. How could a party of intelligent people (the UPND) sink so low by accommodating Thug William Banda and start parroting his political lines? Banda was one of the major reasons MMD lost our trust and HH still embraces him? I am no political analyst but I can assure UPND that you are so dead.
I foresee Chief Justice Sakala being retired and Justice Mambilima taking over as Chief Justice.
William Banda caused UNIP to fall in 1991, he led the MMD to its downfall in 2011 and now he has even started early to destroy the UPND. Anyway, its a plus for the PF to have Banda in the opposition as he will use his vigilante ideas and cause chaos in the opposition and make them useless to the masses by the next elections. You will see chaos in Livingstone by-election.
Does the UPND honestly feel these judges, especially Phillip Musonda, are clean? For a party whose own president Mazoka was cheated of victory by the judiciary in broad day light one would have thought they would embrace this move wholeheartedly. Further, we all know The Govt Proceedings Act makes judge Chisanga’s ruling a big fuss, so just what the hell is UPND up to?

Can someone educate us please no insults, what was the right channel for Mr Membe and Nchito to use if they felt they were grieved by the handling of their situation in court ,which is also available to any average Zambian. We do not want the whole of Zambia to be dragged into a case that involves the non payment of their $14 billion. My second question is would an average Zambian who is grieved by a decision in the court be also offered the same kind of tribunal, just asking please no insults. I think every Zambian agrees that the judicial system, civil service etc needs an overhaul but the timing of calls of cleaning the judiciary may be questionable, why not immediately after September 20th with a clearly laid out plan or next month etc, why now during the $14 billion case.
