Nevers Mumba has been elected Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) president with a landslide victory over his closest rival Felix Mutati during the party’s 3rd extra ordinary convention held in all the ten provinces.
Dr. Mumba polled 870 votes in the re-run against 422 votes of Mr. Mutati.
Returning officer Clement Zulu declared Dr. Mumba as duly elected president of the MMD at the party secretariat in Lusaka which was the totaling center.
A re-run was inevitable as none of the seven candidates managed to amass the 50 percent plus one threshold required by the party Constitution.
In the preliminary stage, Dr. Mumba outclassed his opponents by polling 548 votes representing 41.7 percent while his closest rival Mr. Mutati managed 366 votes representing 27.8 percent.
Former finance minister Situmbeko Musokotwane was third with 280 votes representing 21 percent with Kasempa Member of Parliament Kabinga Pande polling 89 votes representing 6.7 percent.
Other candidates are Kapembwa Simbao who collected 20 votes representing 1.5 percent and Chisamba Member of Parliament Moses Muteteka managing 5 votes with Enock Kavindele collecting only 4 votes.
And speaking shortly after the announcement of results, MMD national chairperson Michael Mabenga who was acting president said the results reflect the will of the general party membership.
Veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga urged the losing candidates to support Dr. Mumba in reorganizing ands rebuilding the party ahead of the 2016 general elections.
The convention also saw the amendment of MMD constitution to allow for two positions of party vice president where one will be in charge of administration and other will oversee economics.

Good results for Democracy. We need somebody who can neutralise PF from Northern and Luapula Provinces come 2016. Lusaka and copperbelt are shifting sands and soon PF will lose popularity but Northern and Luapula is the last line of defence for PF. Well Kabimba told Sata that should ignore Nevers but I guess now can shallow his words. It would nice to get the pattern in each province becuase that will indicate the appeal of Nevers across the country. Nevers will be a good apposition and will compliment HH. The challenge will be national appear for 2016.

This is simple assassin. It is called segmented votes. Too many candidates 100/5 = 20%. That is why there was a run off. This gives a chance to people who were supporting a candidate who has lost in the first round to support a second best choice. At least the leader of MMD was clearly democratically elected. @87. Analyst why don’t you look at the courses that are taken in an MPA programme before you go blurrbing about taking a degree in economics. The point is a master of public administration degree has an economics component. Public economics, development economics, health economics, International economics are modules that are taken in an mpa. Dambisa Moyo was admitted to an Oxford economics ph.d on the basis of her Harvard mpa.
One can study 1 or 2 courses in economics as part of their degree but that does not make him an economist, in this age it is important for a president to be an economist it gives confidence to the voters/citizens. Just a suggestion no need for insults.

Congratulations to the MMD for holding successful party elections. The immediate task of the new party president is to UNITE the paty.He should bring life to the organization by putting in place party structures starting from the Section,Branch, Constituency, District and Provincial. Rebrand the party.Reorganize the party manifesto to suit current economic demands which the current ruling party has failed to take advantage of.UNITE the country which seems to disentergrating by bringing back our motto of ONE ZAMBIA ONE NATION. He should condemn all forms of nepotism and tribalism which seem to have found fertile ground over the last 6months. He should recognize other ethnic groups which we have seen being mar marginalized .He should highlight the clear failures of the current party.
Judging by the reaction Dr Mumba’s victory in the MMD party presidential race is a significant development. Love him or hate him, he cannot be ignored. The folly of underestimating the chances of any political candidate in Zambian politics is clear for all to see. Just consider former late president’s Chiluba and Mwanawasa and even the current President- all were underestimated but went on to win the national elections. As someone has rightly said, this is a call to duty, not new or unlike the call that all political party and national presidents have had. How Dr Mumba answers this call may be personal but the answer will be judged by the Zambian people and posterity.Â
Some of our distinguished leaders before have failed lamentably to live up to the expectations of the people and to meet the demands that a call to duty requires. I pray for Dr Mumba because as a Christian the bible demands that he demonstrate a much higher level of leadership, vision,integrity, sacrifice, respect, common sense and above all humility. The bible in Luke 12:48 says that to whom much is given much will be required and to whom men have committed much, they will require more. I pray for Dr Mumba to be very strong and courageous. The timing of his success cannot be taken lightly. My prayer is that he will reflect deeply on his personal life, past failures and missteps and that he will constantly seek the wisdom and help of God who never fails.Â

The popularity of Nevers was already measured in 2001 when he came out number 9 out of the 11 contestants. After the rejection of MMD in the recent polls, there was need for major re-branding just as Late FTJ opted for Mwanawasa during a period when everyone detested MMD and a candidate from Northern or Luapula provinces. Anyway, regardless of whosover is MMD president, it is inconceivable to imagine MMD winning the 2016 elections, even if PF failed to grab a second term in office. Even a political animal in the name of William Banda has already smelt the rat. Depending on how UPND positions itself now and prior to the 2016 elections, the battle will be between PF and UPND.

People have a tendency of seeing other people in the past … it happens in life all the time. In 2003, the Zambian Think Tank had a heated debate on Zambia Online moderated by Chanda Chisala. Kavindele was VP to Levy (MHSRIP) and I said the best politicians are those with the capability to join forces with others in the common fight. I gave an example of NCC’s Mumba initiating a series of acquisitions and mergers including leveraged buy-outs with then AZ’s Akashambatwa, ZDCs’ Mung’omba and my own UNIP’s Tilyenji to form an entirely new party. I underestimated him because soon afterwards, he initiated his own merger with the MMD and became VP replacing Kavindele. I said then, Nevers will be President one day and the rest is history.
I do not know why some people are celebrating Mumba’s victory. Do you even know what plans he has for the country or if he has any at all? At least we knew what Mutati and Musokotwane were offering in terms of economic plans. The problem of Zambians is they follow personalities and tribe rather than what the individual is offering philosophically. Those who follow the blind end up in a ditch.
I was thinking SMALL, Nevers responded BIG! Those who are underestimating him, simply don’t know the guy … he is smart, articulate, well connected, affable, educated, exquisite, loyal, relevant, eloquent and he is the next President of the smart people of the Zambian Enterprise. At 52 this year, he is a pretty good candidate for 2016 and even 2021. The strategy worked, I appreciate the fact that you really wanted to talk to me before you left the United States a month or so ago. You have been in government before, you have sat in parliament as VP before and you understand the system … nothing can stop you now. Congratulations Dr Mumba. Please have a canibinet in waiting for the next 4 years with a vigorous national development program and emphasize on democratic governance. Alfrica has the oldest presidents and this trend should be changed starting from Zambia. Provide checks and balances in the legislature. And make sure that corruption in eradicated and separation of powers between the judiciary, legislature and excutive is upheld. Make sure Zambians in the diaspora are able to vote in 2016. Most if not all will vote for you since you are cumputer literate.

Usually characters such as Nevers Mumba at one time may fall from grace spectacularly. When you put such an image of being man of God, or firebrand Pastor, a Mr Clean, corruption free person, there could be serious skeletons in the closet.
