UPND Rally fails to take off as Police seal off venue

Share

Zambia Police

A rally called by the United Party for National Development-UPND- in Lusaka’s Kanyama compound has failed to take off after police sealed off the venue.

This is despite a court order that clearly gave the party a go ahead.

Police were deployed to the area to make sure no one gathers at the intended venue.

And some opposition political party presidents have claimed that the Patriotic Front-PF- government is turning Zambia into a one party state.

United Party for National Development-UPND- leader, Hakainde Hichilema, president of Alliance for Democracy and Development-ADD-Charles Milupi and leader of Zambia Direct Democracy Movement-ZDDM- Edwin Sakala, have charged that the current political scenario is no different from politics of the UNIP era.

And political analyst Dante Saunders has criticized the current political situation in the country.

  1. too bad for PF Government to behave like that. i cannot blame the police because they were acting under instructions from state house. i dont know why sata fears HH. MMD never behaved the way PF is behaving. I regrete my vote…hurrigans!

    • mmd never behaved like that-my foot-where were you when sata was teargased, when he was locked up mwanawasa on trumped up charges of motor vehicle theft

    • @al, Sata was in the forefront of ushering in that infamous motor vehicle law- this was to assist in the punishing one dude called Archie. In fact, when Mwanawasa was informed of how unfair the law was by his AG (G.K), he made sure that the unfair law was amended and it was duly amended. As for rallies Sata held as many rallies to his heart’s content. So be fair!

    • Ba al naimwe. sata store the vehicle but was saved by Chungu who cheated saying chi sata was given the motoka for special security project. u sound pathetic. the CNP if digging his grave. want to see Chingaipe and Jere locked up for comtempt of court

    • ba big mulicipuba plz introduce logic in high school so that people can reason very well before posting thier comments..awe zambians u are down ma brothers and sisters…pf used to have rallies even before going to office wats wrong with hakainde having one?am pf but this is out of control shame on you

    • Its so dangerous to have dull people like you. Such a lousy, old fashioned name on the internet. People like you don’t qualify to be citizens of this planet. You are such a waste of raw materials. Get a life and stay out of this site.

  2. Yaaa kwena eeh even the blind can see what Zambia is being driven into.Zambia police am sure you are in agony to be directed to do what headless chickens can do. I feel sorry for you. Very soon another Captain Solo will be on the radio mukofwako zee maningi Peace be unto troubled Zambians

  3. Much as I am not a supporter of UPND, stifling the freedom of speech, assembly etc is counterproductive to the ideals of the democracy we want to build for our country. UPND must have been allowed to go ahead with their rally. I am sure PF would have if they wanted to hold their meeting today at the same venue.
Police have not proffered any valid reason for cancelling the UPND rally. Whatever they have said is pretext.
Court orders must be respected and in this case, the IG must be held in contempt for disrespecting a clear Court order.
We can do better than this!

    • I completely agree with you! We need to build a democracy not going backwards in the Kaunda days. Those tactics worked at that time of history, but we have moved on. The sympathy vote for HH both locally and around the world is growing and there is not telling how that may galvanise public resentment of the government. Popular revolutions are started by people that are regarded as being poor and nonentity in society. So PF should not take people for granted.

    • But the very police were handy to guard an empty place; a number of police officers=adequate manpower. Not all supporters have Kaponya mentality so I am sure that the UPND ones were going to be peaceful.

    • Sorry, Maxwell – what do you mean that the police could not protect HH at a rally fully of UPND supporters? Why would UPND go after their own man? Sounds to me like you are saying that PF intended to disrupt the rally and cause violence.

In any case, it is incumbent on government to uphold EVERYONE’S democratic rights. Why should any well-meaning Zambian be grateful for a police service that cannot do its job? You sound like an under-4 with such silly remarks.

    • Moron comment by maxwell.
In Britain there are rallies all the time with police protection.
They dont stop them once permission is gained.

A comment from an ignorant fool in Britain.

  4. but where did jere got his phd? he cant reason like somebody who went to school i thot he was a serious kanshi mayo even a grade seven can refuse some orders hahaha lolest

  5. The reason advanced by Solomon Jere for revoking the permit was that officers will be providing security at the stadium in Ndola. Now am left wondering where the officers deployed in kanyama could have come from.

  6. Its so amazing how the negative energy of one individual can influence the calm democracy that so many Zambians have fought for what a shame. Zambia is now a PF and Police nation, the constitution is not followed at all. My heart bleeds for Zambia.:(

  7. PF has just started behaving in the same way MMD did and turning the country into a Police state. Is this ruling with a difference PF promised us when they were campaigning?

  8. @No 2 seems to be frm chinsali village,,u ar de same pipo who ar bringing triblerism in zambia..is their anything in the article talking about tribe?

  9. Our country is at risk of breaking up into pieces. The one zambia, one nation is slowly becoming a bygone thing from the time the pf took over government. More and more regions are getting disappointed with what is going on in this country. Nepotism, regionalism, chauvinsm, politics of intrigue, hate etc are now some of the things prominent in this govt. Democracy is slowly becoming a thing of the past. The rule of law is no more; court orders are no longer respected by those in power. Dictatorship is gaining the upper hand. Quo vadis Zambia?

  10. A sad day for Zambia. The worst is yet to come. PF do not mean well and they will fail miserably and if Zambian are normal will speak in 2016.

  11. expect the same from UPND if at all HH will rule. Dont trust this politicians each one will talk nicely just to make him way to state house.

  12. Zambia has no capacity to quench any riot So the best is to prevent it democracy does not mean revolt against Govt.Police have intelligence let HH hold a press conference and tell us what he wanted to say as they way stands police acted in the interest of majority Zambians

  13. Not affected, rally what for??????? If you were told security will not be guaranteed why complain???? its for your safety and those in attendance.

Apply for the permit for another day when it is convenient for both yourselves and the police and move on. Police state, police state chanting will take you nowhere, your aim is to make the regime fail that is what you want, you want violence, so that you attract attention and donors feel pity on you. It is easy for you to win next elections but your strategies leaves much to be desired.

You need to strategies, insults and negativity will not win the mind and hearts of people.

    • Dull thinking/reasoning! But you are dull as usual. Has it ever occurred to you that State machinery is more powerful and the State should have known before hand that they were going to be handicapped thus should not have granted permission, just to cancel it when a weaker party had gone so far in preparation. Dullo dullo!@!

  14. Guys there is no need to be surprised. This is how Zambians are. They are one of the most intolerant people on earth. MMD behaved the same way – PF were not allowed to hold rallies. UNIP before them behaved the same way and UPND will behave the same. At this point Zambia’s salvation only lies in the passing of the old guard and the enactment of a people driven constitution. We need independent police and judiciary services.

  15. @ 21 you need to read the Rise and Fall of Idi Amin then you will understand what the rest of the country is afraid of. Wait until it happens to you that is wheny ou will understand. Tyrants start with political opponents then they move on to ordinary citizens.

  16. Zambia is no longer a democracy, believe me! This man will suspend elections in the unlikely event he remains alive up to 2016!

  17. DON’T COMPLAIN. NO RALLY MAY BE GOOD FOR YOU. TOMORROW ISN’T 2016. YOU HAVE GOT A LONG WAY TO CAMPAIGN B4 2016. IF POLICE SAY THEY ARE UNDER-STAFFED, JUST THANK THE ALMIGHTY JEHOVAH. MAY SOME OF YOU MIGHT HAVE PERISHED AT THE RALLY DUE TO VIOLENCE WHICH EVEN A BABY CAN PREDICT.

  18. the judge who issued that court order must be an imbecile, surely how do you issue a permit over a matter thats bordering on security. PF IS REAPING WHAT IT SOWED COZ WE ADVISED PF TO GET RID OF THE PEOPLE IN SENSITIVE POSITIONS WHO DIDNT SUPPORT PF AND REPLACE THEM WITH THEIR OWN PEOPLE,THEY DID NOT LISTEN. THE JUDGE WHO ISSUED THIS ORDER KNOWS HE COULD NOT VE DONE IT UNIP,FTJ LEVY AND MARABBISH(RB). HOPE ITS NOT JUDGE FLATULENCE CHISANGA AGAIN. ARE THE COURTS WAGING A SILENT BATTLE AGAINST PF.[-(

  19. UKWA IS GONA TURN ZAMBIA IN ANOTHER ZIMBABWE.. I FEEL VFOR PIPO LIVING IN ZAMBIA, AS FOR ME, I WILL NEVER COME BACK TO ZED. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU WHO WASTED YOUR VOTES ON THIS RUBBISH GOVNT SORRY

Monkeys you’re.

  21. Sata ni kama Saddam Hussein,Adolf Hitler,Mussolini,Francisco Franco,Mugabe,Idi Amin,Kim Jong Un na madikteta wengine.Heck, hata hawa ni wazuri kuliko Sata sababu hawakujifanya ati wao ni wapenda demokrasia.

  22. How do you put illiterates like Sata and GBM into power. Primitive!Primitive!Primitive are the three defining words. There is nothing to like about Sata be it as a Person or his Politics. He is the reincarnation of pure evil!

    • You’re just *****s on whom Zambian taxpayers money is been wasted. How is not liking Sata or his politics equate to tribalism Mr Constipated African? Is the word tribalism the first word in your 10 word vocabulary? Most definitely, the word bitterness must be second on your 10 word vocabulary.

As for you Maxwell the clown, please refer to the replies that people have post on your comments! Maxwell you are endowed with the logic of an imbecile! Sigh!

  23. @Mzambia wa zamani my friend if you did history in school or saw the inside of a secondary school classroom you would have been wise enough not to use those leaders names as comparison. If truth is stranger than fiction, you must be truth!

  24. All you NAYSAYERS on here (UPND SUPPORTERS) forget it… We have now the machinery of Power and IN  African politics that means at least 5 terms in office for the RULING PARTY!

You have got to find another leader within your party whose leadership qualities can click with that inner blessed self that distinguishes us Zambians as a people. ( I bet Mazoka is really disappointed in the HEAVENS with this crop of self-serving leaders within the undp…)

  25. Peace is good. I am glad no one has suffered physical harm. UPND and Police deserve our praises for their maturity.

     God bless our nation.

  26. Another victory for the PF!

Anywayz, time will come when the current ‘ruling’ party shall be the ‘former ruling’ party. It always does. It’s as sure as the clock hitting mid-night tomorrow.

  27. simply coz the bitter scumbag was denied permit should not put zambia at crossroads. What intellectual thing was this scumbag was going to say at the rally that he hasnt said thus far apat from preaching hatred and bitterness. hh we are tired of you causing unnecessary disturbances/distraction to grz governance.[-(

    • I sorry to say Zambia is behind because of fools like you. What good things was the president saying at his rallies before going into power. At one rallies they were busy producing cabbage as a symbol for the late mwanawasa. this blind support will not Zambia any where. We must learn to condemn when our party makes a mistake or else we will never learn. Some of these happenings should be blamed on MMD because they kepot manipulating the constitution to stay in power for every and now we have someone that loves power backed by a very presidential power centred constitution

  28. simply coz the bitter scumbag was denied permit should not put zambia at crossroads. What intellectual thing was this scumbag was going to say at the rally that he hasnt said thus far apat from preaching hatred and bitterness. hh we are tired of you causing unnecessary disturbances/distraction to grz governance

  29. To be born in Zambia is not your fault but to remain and die in Zambia definetly is your problem!
I hate zambia, I read this and I can’t help but question people who have decided to live in Zambia forever. You only realise you are blessed when you see such chaotic nonsensical repugnant acts from afar.A country where people die from curable diseases like headache, toothache, backache, faceache etc.Politics are in shambles, actions are never succinct for a well versed educated person to understand what goes on in their heads!
If you have a chance, leave that banana republic called Zambia ,please leave and never return!

    • Makaveli there is no perfect place on earth. the US has over 15 million people who are poor – that more than the entire Zambian population! In the UK, in France – people die in winter because they have no heating systems! What is important is to work toward a more perfect society…! I however agree that stopping the UPND rally was uncalled for.

  30. True definition of a failed State.
    What is Sata afraid of?
When HH said it at first, I thought he had gone too far. But after seeing this govt coming to bloom, I agree with HH: This chimbwi alibe plan for sure.

  31. Police said they could not allow the UPND rally because of lack of manpower but deployed enough manpower to seal off the rally venue this morning.

  32. The PF are making UPND even more popular. They got permsiion they got the court order and PF does this? I am in all for freedom of speech.
I am not a UNPND supoorter be this should not be allowed to happen in Zambia

  33. Timely warning to HH, MILUP, NEVERS and other opositon leader. HE MCS ni DONCHI KUBEBA. He wants to develop this country and he has no time for jokers and Bantustand party leaders. He will mercilessly deal with them.

  34. The reason given by police is the weakest they could have dreamt of. What happens if they get permission for this weekend when there will be no football to use an excuse. Police cannot tell that there so thin on the ground that one event makes them unable to provide security for one more event. What will happen when there are bi-elections with all the parties wanting to hold rallies. We will be told only PF can hold rally because all police cowards will be protecting the president

  35. The headline should have been Police Stop UPND Rally because it did not fail to take off on its own! Solomon Jere, wapya baisa!

  36. @Maxwell, WE DO NOT WANT TO READ YOUR FOOLISHNESS. PLEASE GO AND BLOG ON THE POST NEWSPAPER WEBSITE. I AM SURE THEY WILL TOLERATE YOUR ASS KISSING DULLNESS.

  37. Dont kudabwa. something must be done, Elijah commanded death on 50 soldiers and the last time i checked God still answers prayers. Lets start praying and commanding something.

  38. You were warned by Chanda Chimba, you had options but you chose Sata so deal with it do not regret just enjoy. God gave you the change you wanted so that next time you will chose wisely. In 2016 Chose wisely….

  39. Makaveli you’re a black second class economic refugee good for sweeping white shit wherever your black ass is. Home is best

  40. @miponto
You are right. first we need to ask God to forgive all the foolish Galatians who voted for Sata despite his HISTORY. Then we should start praying and commanding for the revival of P/cancer and heart attack so that he is relived off his duties.

  41. I am a PF supporter and i dont agree with what the police defied the court order, where did they get the guts from.Sata should say something

  42. The PF has failed on its promises and appears not to have a developmental plan.
There is no evidence that jobs have increased. Many capital projects in areas like Siavonga are coming to an end and it is likely that locals will return to fishing.
    PF has lost support generally.
Zambia is fast becoming a police state.

  43. PF is fast losing support.Even the Kaponyas are losing faith. Please PF don’t destroy our motherland. Our forefathers fought and died that we might live in a free and prosperous Zambia.Lets pray for Zambia.

  44. My friend cybersmart #69. Who lied to you that PF is losing popularity?? Infact PF has gained alot. I stay a teacher and live in Mkushi myself.

  45. The police should be properly used as instruments of promoting democray. To protect citizens as they attend meetings is society. Our country is a symbol of democray in southern africa. The President should allow for difference of opinion to prevail. It is good for the country. Zambians love Zambia equaly.
