Vice President Guy Scott has visited First Republican President Dr Kenneth Kaunda. ZNBC’s Effie Mpande reports that Dr. Scott who was accompanied by Eastern Province Minister Charles Banda and his Senior Private Secretary Robert Kamalata chatted with Dr. Kaunda for about six minutes.

Doctors have advised Dr. Kaunda to stay in bed for observation. Dr. Kaunda has thanked the Vice President for visiting him. Dr. Scot has assured Dr. Kaunda that he will be fine. The Vice President observed that Dr. KAUNDA is stressed following a restless week.

First Republican President Kenneth Kaunda is unwell and has been admitted to the University Teaching Hospital-UTH-in Lusaka. Dr Kaunda is suspected to have been stressed following a busy week and the death of his wife.

Dr Kaunda’s Press Aide Sunday Musonda said that Dr Kaunda is now being observed by a team of medical doctors. He said that Dr. Kaunda has had a restless week after returning from Durban South Africa where he had gone to receive the Mahatma Ghand Peace Award earlier this week.

Mr Musonda said that Dr Kaunda has not rested as he had to rush to Zimbabwe where his wife Betty died on Wednesday.

Earlier in the morning, Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda, Geoffrey Mwamba for defense and Wynter Kabimba for Justice went visited Dr Kaunda at UTH.

The three cabinet Minister were brief about Dr Kaunda’s condition by Health Permanent Secretary Peter Mwaba.

Meanwhile, Muchinga Province Minister Malozo Sichone has advised mourners traveling to Chinsali to attend the burial of Mama Betty Kaunda to consider lodging in Mpika district.

Mr Sichone is concerned that a number of mourners may be stranded because Chinsali has insufficient lodging places.

The Minister says Chinsali district does not have enough lodges and hotels to accommodate all mourners traveling to the area.

Mr. Sichone has also advised motorists to carry enough fuel because Chinsali does not have a service station.

  1. Wishing him a quick recovery to mourn the departed wife. Our prayers are with the family, may the Almight give them strength

  2. So sorry to hear about super KEN. As it’s always speculated, the death of one spouse always has a serious impact on the life of the surving spouse in older couples. We pray for your full recovery KK, the world still needs you. RIP mama Betty!

    Sad weekend for Umupondo!

  3. Get well KK. You fought for our independence and if it wasn’t for you the people of Zambia would have suffered under the system of apartheid like SA

  4. You deserve our respect. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of sorrow. Please get well because I will cry if anything happens to you.

  5. The way Zambians mourn is very stressfull to the immidiate family members. He shouldn’t have been allowed to hug and greet everybody, its very stressfull for an old man.He should have been given enough time and space to rest.

  6. Kaunda was born in Chinsali and ruled Zambia as a dictator for solid 27 years. During the time meanwhile Chinsali has had no service station at all? Politicians are hopeless at everything. Wonder why people hero worship them like gods.

    • He was a national leader not a chinsali leader. If he took development to chinsali you would have said he was practising regionalism.

    • This is not the time to criticize KK for whatever you deem as his past errors, its time to side with him during this very difficult period having just lost his companion of 60 plus years.
There is a lot of good KK did. He stood up to the British, his efforts saw firstly the break up of the “stupid” Federation which then led to the Independence of Zambia. For we Zimbabweans KK was instrumental in bringing the Smith regime to an end and this ushered a new republic ruled by blacks.

  7. The photo attached to this story is very revealing. It shows that Kabimba and GBM find it uncofortable to face each other. These two men will never work confortably on a single round table. Tribalism at its best. in a PF Govt.

  8. ZAMBIANS, THIS TOPIC SHOULD NOT BE AIRED HERE DUE TO THE MOURNING PERIOD WE ARE GOING THROUGH. ATI PA BWINGI TAKWABA UKULUBA.

MY VIEW IS THAT WE SHOULD REVIEW OUR POLICY ON FUNERALS AND BURIALS.

THE IDEA OF RECEIVING AN INVITATION CARD IS IMPORTANT.

WHY DO WE MOURN PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT EVEN CLOSE TO US? DO WE PRETEND? THERE IS NEED TO SERIOUSLY REVIEW THIS MATTER.

    • You seem to have shed your cultural values!! SHE WAS WIFE TO FIRST PRESIDENT, & as the saying goes, BEHIND EVERY SUCCESSFUL MAN, THERE IS A SUCCESSFUL WOMAN – She has been by his side since he led the country to independence to date!! So she deserves some respect from you too!! we have lost a mother to the nation!! A funeral IS NOT A PARTY, attendance comes from deep within oneself to pay respect to the departed, YOU NEED NOT HAVE KNOWN THEM PERSONALLY. It is a respect for our mortal finality!!

  9. Common sense, my question exactly. How can the birth place of the liberation struggle have no fuel station and it called a district and provincial capital? Be serious. And the provincial minister is also dumb. As if Mpika has adequate accomodation. This is a lesson to all Zambians. Develop your home area so that when we escort you we will have somewhere to sleep

  10. #12, Mpangwe – Actually, looks like all the Bembas (in the picture) are trying to exclude kabimba from their conversation.

  11. #17, Gundix, Take it easy, this is just a msg board. For your information, I am a Bemba blissfully married to a Tonga for more than two decades.

  12. Cool it! Anyway, since there is insufficient lodging you should carry tents (there are a lot of wild, open spaces to pitch) – OH! Carry a spade and bucket, too… For fuel – well, do the right thing and create enough space for those 25 litre containers you bought cooking oil in —- no, that won’t do; I hope you guys have a culture of camping. This announcement should not be a big deal! Meantime KK get well, mourn your beloved and rest well.

  13. We wish KK a quick recovery. We understand that the Kaunda Children are divided aboiut burying their mother in Chinsali. Panji has been bulldozing the decision on political grounds, but the other siblings are of the view that she did not come from there and should either be buried in Malambo or in Lusaka. Watch this space, more data to emerge.

  14. #22,she was born there, read her profile.yes she is from malambo,in eastern province.my view is the big man would love to be buried there also.otherwise lusaka would be the best place for rest.

  15. Orevour MAMA betty…and quick recovery PAPA ken…some of us we could nt have been here had it not been 4 your couregeous indepence fight of course with other heroes….

  16. #11 and #12: comments kuwayawaya fye.You talk like some one suffering from the disease of mind.Your views are totally out of the issue at hand. I will give u -100% you lunatics…mature 4 better.

    • Tom! This is the point, Politicians can not bring any form of development, however, Kaunda thought he could in which case he squandered a lot of resourses for the Zambian people with no consiquences on his part. If you asked him a question, as a journalists, he could not answer, he told you and I quote “Sit down you stupit *****”. Kaunda took over the Zambian Economy when the Kwacha was 1 to 2 to the Great British Pound GBP. Today 1GBP = ZMK7100.
Tom if you thought Obama and the democrates are providing good leadership, I would not be surprised coz you’re the people who think that development comes from redistributing wealthy to the poor not hard work. Wait while you’re there in America when Obama takes the US economy down while you continue supporting him like you did with Kaunda

  17. @Planzo

Mama Betty will be buried wherever the family decides. Lusaka or Chinsali. It would be good for her to be buried in Lusaka though, looking at the health of the husband. However, please note that wherever she will be buried, he will not be buried their with her. he is going to heroes park.

  18. @Rest in peace Mama Betty #15
If you are complaining too much about everything in terms of attending the funeral of the late lady, Betty Kaunda, hey why don’t you take a leave from attending the funeral. I am pretty sure the rest of the attendants can/will do without irritants like you ‘Rest in peace Mama Betty’ #15. Consider yourself discharged from your social responsibility you initially charged yourself with. You know what, you irritate me like them people, the PF hierarchy and them rest of the rank and file membership. I don’t give it a dame what the hell you will think about after reading them email, dig it. Hey, who cares ‘B’ . Rest in peace them late respected lady. Go well. Ashes to ashes and dust to dust, amen.
