UPND president Hakainde Hichilema reacts after he was among the party officials teargassed at the Lusaka Central Police Station
UPND president Hakainde Hichilema

United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema has accused the PF government of planning to cause about 30 by-elections in the country.

Mr. Hichilema has told QFM News in an interview that his party is aware that the PF government has allegedly given some Members of Parliament about K100 million each meant to buy off opposition councilors.

He says with the looming by- elections, the country would spend about K300 billion.

Mr. Hichilema added that such huge resources can be diverted to other needy areas in the country for the benefits of many Zambians.

And the ruling Patriotic Front in Southern Province has advised UPND parliamentarians wishing to work with the ruling party not to allow their party president Hakainde Hichilema to intimidate them.

PF Southern Province Political Secretary Brian Hapunda says some UPND parliamentarians in Southern province have expressed interest to work with the ruling party but that they have unfortunately been threatened with expulsion by the top leadership of the party.

Hapunda says the UPND leadership should realize that real development can only be effected by the party in government.

Speaking to QFM News, Hapunda says the PF is not forcing opposition members of parliament to resign from their parties but is only interested in working with the opposition in spreading development.

He says it is very unfortunate to even learn that some of the UPND MPs who expressed interest in working with the government were served with death threats.

Hapunda however says whether the UPND likes it or not, the Patriotic Front is penetrating the province adding that nothing will stop the momentum because people have already made up their minds.

He has since advised the UPND parliamentarians to also take advantage of the assurance of protection to MMD MPs serving in government by President Michael Sata.

  1. Hapunda is a disgrace to youth development. How else can one justify the costly exercise of by-elections unless his lust for power & filling up the belly are priority over development.

Need i remind this despot in the making that development can be achieved through collaboration with opposition members without crossing the floor thereby bloating the self aggrandizement budget.

  2. Hapunda, you are really dull. Let it be known to you that our able UPND MPs in Southern Province are a source of pride for us. They work even when in opposition. Southern Province develops every day because these men and women tell the whoever is in government the truth and nothing but the truth. Most MPs from Southern Province are Professionals unlike the PF Ministers and MPs. Check your records and you will prove me right.

Its Zambia Forward with UPND and HH all the way………..

    • Liar…cheat those who dont read, UPND has the least educated MPs , Just check the parliament website..man dont lie, the PF has the most educated MPs.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia.

    • You surprise me my dear friend. Check the province which is developed apart from the cosmopolitan CB and Lusaka? On the Education of MPs, Go back to the website and see again. PF has the least. UPND MPs are educated. Check your facts again.

    • Usatinama boza iwe kapala, check the parliament  website before feeding us stupid lies. Good move truth hates!

  3. HH and his political life..there is a big question mark! i doubt if this guy will make a big mark in his political career.

    • why doubt when the man is doing fine. HH is the real man who calls a spade aspade

    • Some could view HH as the right man for Zambia. But HH supporters are either arrogant or in denial. HH’s chances of ruling the country are, diplomatically speaking, slim.

  4. PF was a poor party. suddenly they have aquired a lot of money to flush around and buy off MP’s HOW>

where has the money suddenly come from?????

corruption. The Chinese, Trafigura and others have Joined the band wagon.

Mathani and other criminal elements have joined the band wagon sponsoring PF in return for favours.

  5. …I think for once, HH shud grow up. you need 2 go 2 school 2 decern something, how could hh say deffectors are given 100million. workin with ruling party does need one 2 pay its all about numbers. are you telling me HH, you gave william banda and edward mumbi 100million 2 join ur ka part? come on ba hh, grow up man, u wanted politics so wok hard 2 win masses its nt a joke 2 do plotics, dont behave like under five. by-elections ka, yachabe who wudnt want 2 work with the ruling party? the party with money at the moment? get a life buddy!

    • Sorry Bongo, it seems you live outside planet earth or r reasoning is parochial. Working wth government is different from defecting which the ruling party is ENCOURAGING IS costly and requires some luring. A zmk100m is actually too low. As for me, the ruling party has offered me ZK150million plus making my home area a district. You can imagine how morally weak MPs respond to such incentives.
You may be interetsed to know, i am seriously thinking on the idea

    • IWE,
PF IS ENCOURAGING MP’S TO DEFECT. PF IS SPENDING TOO MUCH MONEY ON BY ELECTIONS. SO WHERE IS PF GETTING MONEY FROM.SUDDENLY PF IS THE RICHEST PARTY IN ZAMBIA.

HOW COME WHEN A FEW MONTHS AGO THEY WERE A POOR PARTY. CORRUPTION IN PF HAS TAKEN CENTER STAGE. LET US REMOVE THEM. LET US TOPPLE THEM.

CITIZENS POWER CAN DO IT SINCE OUT SOLDIERS CANT DO IT AS CAWARDS AND NOT EDUCATED HENCE NOT SEEING THE ATROCITIES PF COMMITTING.

  6. HH never learns about making unsubstantiated claims but neverless he himself has given each of his MPs about K300 million and made them to sign that when either of them leaves the party they immediately pay back the money given and thats what he uses to intimidate his MPs. He can now obviously feel the heat and he knows that a number of his MPs are at crossroads. Politics is about numbers that why him as an enclave leader tried to form that unholy alliance with clueless Mumba, now that the selfish scheme has fallen flat fac down he is seeking attention by propagating the usual song of bye election this and that. This tonga on oath has seen his Sinyinda also crumble, shame.

    • Which work are you performing? We’ve mealie meal shortages already on the Copperbelt. You are just a bunch of clueless buffoons, kleptomaniacs, and tribalists!

    • Ba guy take it easy. PF was popularly voted into office by the people of Zambia therefore it follows that only the Zambian people will remove PF. No other means of removing PF.Learn to leave with this fact. Sela twibeko naifwe, mwaiba sana ba MMD na ba UPND.

  8. # 12, money from by elections comes from govt coffers not party coffers. Can someone provide evidencd that PF is encouraging MMD MPs to defect. PF has only promised to retain them To stand for the same seats if expelled. PF has identified MMD MPs contribution to the well being of this nation but its the MMD thats frustrating the initiative. If MMD can stop harassing the Mps then there would be no need for a by election

  9. I advise Zambians to focus on education and financial stability to avoid over dependence on government.

    • Spot on well articulated. To Develop this country it will have to be about what we have to offer and not what we can get (adapted from the wise words from John F Kennedy). This is the approach countries that have developed have taken.

  10. Ok who should take development to rural or people on the ground? Is it MP or government through line ministries. Can someone educate me.

  11. If this is how HH hopes to make hiz “presence” felt on the political arena, then am afraid he iz making a very big mess of it.

  12. Hakainde Hakainde Hakainde we need proof otherwise you are just ranting, this is because MMD made a mistake to expell Masumba and subsequently lost, now that was a lesson to all other MPs who were told would be expelled…no wonder these greedy opposition chaps are crying faul…opposition MPs work with PF no sane party president will expell you…..

  13. K100m  is not a lot of money, by UK standards that like £10 000 same money, that collectively in about 10 years I have given to Zambia through clothes, gifts and money.

It doesn’t make sense ridiculing what HH is saying, because he must have some concrete evidence
As a PhD student I suggest we don’t sweep such statements under the carpet just like that, an resorting to name calling, under 5. etc

    Thanks

    • You are not a PhD student unless you can provide evidence. As for your donations, they are pretty insignificant over 10 years. Let’s dis aggregate that: You have been donating K10m per year and K833,000 per month which equals about 104 pounds. This is clear evidence that you have not worked in a well paying job because you would have given out more. This is pure evidence that you fall under the taxation threshold in the UK of 8,105 per year. Fact!

  14. Well said and good. Good, good my brother and, you must also keep on reminding these stupid naive unthoughtful figures such this Hapunda fella, that us die hard believers in our traditional approaches which are always and have always been based on simple Tonga calculations of accepting what is deemed to be correct and fair, that we can do without Sata and his clonies. We cannot allow such madness to take root in our society whereby traitors such as this Hapunda chap is taking advantage of our passivity and the inability of our majority villagers who cannot question his critical appraisal in PF’s administrative affairs in Southern Province. These traitors must be shown where they belong and must not be allowed to divide our people for sake of this Sata chap and his clonies.

  15. That is your tax money and your so-called Eurobond at work. Don’t be surprised if in 2016 you are busy seeing graders raising dust in your area pretending to be putting up roads. Watch this space!

  16. Inasmuch as we like other tribes across the length and wideth of Zambia because of intermarriages between our us and other tribes, we should be given ample opportunities to determine who should be recognised as a genuine Tonga leader, of course HH, not these hungry lazy opportunists like this Hapunda who jumps at any slightest offer from the chaiman of corruption, Sata. Do not choke our throats with drunkards who are pulled out of tarvens and then you install them as our representatives. And yet, you prepare written speeches for these losers laced with lies designed to arrest minds of our Tonga villagers, we are not as naive as you think that we are. Hapunda, you are an id..iot and you are cursed.

  17. # 22 Goodless of NO GOOD indeed! The opposition are right now irked by the victory of the PF and Masumba in North-Western province. The By-election in Mufumbwe was caused by the MMD who expelled Masumba for closely working with the PF government. The message from the masses is very simple for opposition leaders; work with the GRZ to effectively achieve development. You would rather have sycophant UPND leadership threaten MPs with expulsion or death for working with the current government for development and economic emancipation of its people? The traditional Tonga superiority, you are advocating will not take HH and his followers like you anywhere. I am totally against tribalist approach to politics and this is what is slowly, but surely killing Hakaindes’ political career.

  18. MP for sale, preferably to the ruling Party. Contact me for terms and conditions.Only re-based currency (ZMW) will be accepted.

  19. HH reads watchdog alot. It is a pity he does not realise that ZWD is just chewing his money. This story was on watchdog two days ago. And they even lie to him that it is the most read media in Zambia. How can Tongas sink so low to believe this

  20. The fact that so far only pipo in the diaspora have responded to this story only shows that online media is not popular in Zambia

  21. Goodless as your name suggests it is no surprise that nothing sensible is coming out from you, what do you mean by ” that we can do without Sata and his clonies.” whats wrong with the minority clans kansi..? dont be swayed by HH

  22. If Zed had just 8 more people who think like MundiaM and myself that would be 10 citizens with brains then I can assure you that our motherland would prosper but aweh shuwa its just supporting ka HH on tribal grounds…shame….well said MundiaM

  23. Does HH have facts?HH now has realised that he has no direction and that he might lose his MPs who have realised HH is misleading them!!

  24. Oh yes, we are aware of Tonga families whereby most Tonga women are married to Bemba men. In such given circumstances all of those children speak fluent Bemba and they also speak Tonga. Besides that, some children prefer to speak Bemba to Tonga and I am not suggesting that Tonga is a lesser tribe by any standards, my underlying argument is that you cannot afford to hate Bembas or other tribes knowing that within your own family there are a lot of Bembas. When one marries someone, two big families unite as one. I for one all my sisters were married to Bemba men and some of them are still married to Bembas. And I have about 28 nephews and nieces who are Bembas and their off-springs, also are Bembas. Why should I hate my own fresh and blood. We are very proud simple people.

  25. @Mwila chuma No, 27. nah it simply means we are they majority having enough meals for the energy required to blog here my tonga bro. besides, chinese phones there dont connect to the net, i surely cant talke of laptops aisha

  26. The question of working closely with the PF government is still a burning and bruising one by any standards. An argument by analogy, it is as good as saying that, simply put, one size fits all heads in a given village. This is wrong indeed, as long as I fully and earnestly understand my village upbringing without fusing my child developmental stages with this western education, I am fully aware that people should be given their own autonomy especially when they intend to decide about their own destiny. If the PF regime wants to effect developmental change anywhere across all inches in the republic, I see nothing which inhibits them from implementing such intentions because they enjoy the mandate to postively change all Zambians. We want some of autonomy so as to help the poor.

  27. We the real villagers do not accept cosmetic changes which do not have any guarantees or any life span. Such changes are as good as lip stick or any ladies facial make ups which when washed with mere luke warm water simply disappear. If normal American men and women failed to change my life style in their own cities, I do not ever think that, nor does anything cross my mind that any African stands a chance to redefine my identity of a pure undiluted villager. We are all working in these marble air-conditioned buildings with diverse races but this is another passing phase and our villages are our final places of rest. The PF government should stop dancing around the cream of the matter by accusing HH of delaying development but should in lieu of that, just develop the country.

  28. IN MORE RELEVANT NEWS- CHELSEA MANAGER ROBERTO DI MATEO HAS BEEN SACKED! ZAMBIANS WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT POLITICS!

    • Agreed Zambianz worry too much about politks, though it iz unavoidable, the sacking of Di Matteo by Chelsea doezn’t qualify to be “relevant newz” but just some item people can relieve themselvez from ADD, FDD, HERITAGE, MMD, NAREP, PF, UNIP, UPND and a clustre of other partiez.

  29. HH,tamwaleka ubuwelewele…”SELENI TUBOMBEKO”. Honestly speaking, even my granies at the village can not buy this cheap type of politics from this man.Who does not want to associate self with the party in power? maybe only the likes of Chifine,Lifwekelo,Mumbi,Chimumbwa,Chanda Chimbwi the rest want.No need even to spend money on them, they just cross over willingly.Cheeky Monkey,be realistic ma politics aya ka.

  30. HH statement is unsubstantiated unless I am wrong. However, Hapunda’s statement is sad when coming from a youth. If this is the kind of youth we dream will be politicians in future, then we are on reverse gear. Who says only constituencies that have PF MPs will get development? Is that how PF understands development? Then in my modern understanding of national development, they must be voted out of power. Development is for every Zambian and every place in Zambia regardless of political affilliation. HAPUNDA should concentrate in this objective and not fight his former party until it is dicapitated. As an ordinary Zambian, I am most interested in developmental result and and not One Party System building. We left that a long time ago.

  31. Hahaha,HH the man calls it as he sees it.This HH man and his vast wealth is enough proof that Tongas are superior to other tribes.

  32. Sue the PF or shut up. You are aware that there are allegations. Do you know what an allegation is? An allegation is an unproven and unconfirmed report. Hakapuba Hakapena

  33. I am tied of the Rants of this man. Please HH tell Zambians what you will do differently from what the PF is doing? How you will develop Zambia so that the people of Zambia come and vote for you in 2016. But you are busy childishly ranting , why? Be a mature man as to give direction to the country.

Peace and Prosperity to Mother Zambia.

  34. #41, YOU ARE RIGHT. HH MUST SUE THE PF GRZ. HH IS EDUCATED ENOUGHT TO KNOW WHAT TO DO AND WHERE TO GO AND COMPLAIN. NOT IN THE MEDIA OTHERWISE PF IS NOT STUPID NOT TO SEAL THE LOOP HOLES IF THEY SURE DID DISH OUT SUCH HANDOUTS.

    • sure we do know about that story but he never expelled them did he? actually they had gone to the ncc which jast wasted our money. fogotten already?

  35. There he goes Mr Alarm HH with his alarming statements without founded truth. If taken to court again he will the laws being applied are colonial, what sence can one get from this man??? He just blows up like a baloon. Nonsence !!!!

  36. #S 1 AND 2, IT’S THE OPPOSITION THAT SAID THEY WILL BE OPPOSING EVERYTHING TO FRUSTRATE PF DEVELOPMENT AGENDA AND THE OPPOS ARE THE ONES TO BLAME. DON’T THINK PF IS GOING TO REMAIN ALOOF AND WATCH OPPOSITION FRUSTRATE DEVELOPMENT. THEY HAVE TO WOE MPs CROSSOVER

  37. Something worth analysing here. Is the PF government now telling the electorate that put in power that consitituences that voted for the opposition cannot receive any development? Is it MPs that bring development to a constituency or the government in its pursuit of its development plans for the country? What is the meaning of the bargain that PF is now making is to advance its development agenda or its upto something? What is difficult for PF to deliver development to all parts of the country without tempering with the measures which ought to provide checks and balances?ARE WE GOING TO CONTINUE POLITIKING EVEN AFTER ELECTIONS? Surely the must be a stop to this and a decision be made to move foward by minimising ways that can easily cause confusion.

    • No what they are saying is an MP in the opposition should not be hounded out of their party for being appointed to a position in government and when they coorporate with government. The problem is the opposition wants government to fail at the expense of not developing mother Zambia. All they care about is being in power themselves and if that happens they are forgetting that they will need support and will end up being in charginheriting a lot of problems. We should all work towards a common good regardless of political affiliation.

    • PK, I totally agree with your reasoning here. Everyone seems to be focusing more on the blame game. We now find ourselves missing to identify the root causes of the ills we are experiencing and the opportunity to come up with pragmatic solutions.

  38. HH please start by providing evidence of the past 5 lies you have told. Clear yourself in court for the malitia story then we will start listening to you. This under5 is a perpetual liar. No wonder he has turned UPND into an Under5 Tribal Tonga political Bitter party. We need issue based politics.

  39. HH is a disgrace to his party and his family. Badala try the something else politics is not in your blood. You have failed lamentably , I wonder if really the masters you have was genuinely obtained because your behaviour is far less that of a graduate!Foolish underfive

  40. Mr Hampunda , your reasoning is backwards ! Tell us about any development in yr own life? Chimbwi no plan, people like u are not after development but their own belly, we shall not be fooled with yr cheap politics

  41. #s 36 and 39, I THINK YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE LOGIC. TAKE FOR INSTANCE THE RECENTLY ANNOUNCED BUDGET WHICH WAS ACCEPTED BY THE MAJORITY OF ZAMBIANS AND PRAISED BY THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY. THE OPPOSITION POLITICAL PARTIES OF HH AND NEVERS NEVER ACCEPTED IT AND PLANNED TO SHOOT IT IN PARLIAMENT- MEANING VOTING AGAINST IT. THIS IS HOW DEVELOPMENT CAN SURFER. ANOTHER EXAMPLE WOULD BE WHEN THE GOVT NEEDS TO CREATE MORE PROVINCES AND TOWNS TO FACILITATE DECENTRALISATION. THE OPPOSITION MAY INFLUENCE THE PEOPLE OF SAY SOUTHERN OR WESTERN PROVINCE TO RESIST CHANGE. IN THE MEANTIME DELAYING DEVELOPMENT IN THAT AREA(S). SO, THE BEST THING TO DO IS PLAY NUMBERS IN PARLY. THE LARGER THE NUMBER OF PF MPs THE SMOOTHER THE BUSINESS RUNS. MIND YOU IT WAS THE OPPOSITION THAT SAID THEY WILL BE…

  42. …OPPOSING EVERY GOVT MOTION/MOVE. SO, WHAT DO YOU THINK THE GOVT SHOULD DO? OBVIOUSLY, ACCEPT DISMISSED MPs FROM THE OPPOSITION TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF MPs IN PARLY AND HENCE REDUCE RESISTANCE. SELA TUBOMBEKO, BULULU.

  43. stupid thinking by hapunda to think that development can only go where there is a pf mp,sata is head of state of zambians regardless of which political party one is from.lets not injure democracy hunger, poverty, wamuyaya in govt and greed .

  44. These guys are like watching a horror movie… Or maybe belenya??? Any way cant just figure out what the hell they are doing.

  45. :d Is there any desire surely to foster development for southern province MP’s. Opposition for the sake of opposition really saves no purpose.

  46. Very great post. I simply stumbled upon your blog and wanted to say that I have really loved surfing around your weblog posts. After all I’ll be subscribing to your rss feed and I’m hoping you write again very soon!
