Zambia national boxing team coach Kennedy Kanyanta has described 2013
as a difficult year for the sport.
Kanyanta popularly known as The Moving Trap said he regrets Zambia’s
failure to win medals at major international competitions.
Zambia’s bid to mint medals at the 2013 AIBA World Boxing
Championships in Kazakhstan flopped when boxers Gilbert Choombe and
Kaonga exited the competition empty handed.
“2013 was a very challenging year for Zambian boxing on the
international scene. This was a very difficulty year we have had ups
and downs,” he said.
Kanyanta said failing to win medals at the AIBA Boxing Championships
in Kazakhstan was painful.
“It was a bitter pill to swallow considering that I am used to winning
medals when I was a boxer and I am used to seeing my boxers win medals
as a coach,” he said.
“I really apologies to the nation and the Zambia Amateur Boxing
Federation because we didn’t fair well in Kazakhstan,” Kanyanta said.
He was however consoled by the three medals Zambian boxers won at the
2013 African Zone Six Senior Championships in Botswana last July.
“One of the memorable times that I can recall is when we had the Zone
Six in Botswana where we had two silver medals and one bronze. It was
a competitive championship,” Kanyanta added.
The national boxing team coach said he was hoping that 2014 would be a
better year for Zambian boxing.
