The Ministry of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education has explained the revision of the school curriculum which will be officially launched tomorrow, Wednesday 15th January 2014.

Speaking during a media breakfast in Lusaka this morning, Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary, Dr Patrick Nkanza cited the factors that have motivated the review of the curriculum as Technology change, new learning areas, new priorities and change of learning and teaching systems.

Dr Nkanza said that the drivers of the curriculum are to meet individual needs, societal expectations, labour market demands, social and economic changes as well as the global changes.

He added that the sources of information for curriculum review are the Education plan of 1996, Vision 2030, National Implementation framework, the Education Act of 2011, National Development Plans and the Baseline surveys and reports.

Dr. Nkanza said that the Pre School Curriculum will include 60% free and guided play while 40% will be Academic which will also include the use of familiar local language.

He added that the primary and secondary curriculum will include the introduction of ICT, entrepreneurship education, business studies, design and technology studies among others.

Dr Nkanza has further indicated that the implementation of the revised curriculum may take up to three years.

  1. Excellent! And all these subjects like Technology, ICT and Entrepreneurship will be taught in Bemba or Bisa!

    • I may reserve some serious comments. However,

Do we have adequate teachers to teach these local languages in School?

I have lived across Zambia, from mapatizya, Kopa, Namwala, mapatizya, Mazabuka, Mpika, Nkole mufumu, Kopa, Chipata to Lundazi. Most of these teachers are not locals>

Wish well Dr in your new discovery.

    • My first language was NDebele, learnt Tumbuka, Nyanja Tonga, Bemba Lozi, but i can not speak Ndebele apart from greeting. So it might a good waste of time.

Just open night schools so that PF militarist can learn 1+1 and how to pronounce Three instead of flii

  2. Please do not experiment these so called local languages on our children. So much confusion already because your revised curricula not ready and the noble teachers do not know what to do

  3. English is also our local language please allow our kids from our areas to use them. while those in chibolya should use Chibenye (Nyanja mixed with Ichibemba).

  4. I agree with Dr, there is need to change the curriculum to suit the emerging technology and also learners ought to learn entrepreneur for them to be effective business men $ women in this country. language barrier isn’t a problem

  5. It is total confusion unleashed by the PF. Who told you that all households in , say, Lusaka use vernacular at home ? So what in what language are children from English speaking homes going to be taught ?
And what happens to teachers who dont know vernacular ? And just how do you teach ICT, maths , science in vernacular ?
And to which schools are the Minister’s children going , do they go to the same schools where vernacular is the medium of instruction ?
I call upon parents to reject this experiment which risks Zambia producing children who cant compete in the global market . Parents Unite !

    • @ Rotten. Which part of this sentence “the Pre School Curriculum will include 60% free and guided play while 40% will be Academic which will also include the use of familiar local language” don’t you understand? No one has said that ICT, Maths or Science will be taught in vernacular, but a local language will also be taught. YOU ARE the danger to your children if you can’t interpret such a simple idea.

  6. Zambian education curricula need to change. We learn too many irrelevant subjects right from primary school to university and end up knowing something about everything but end up being good at nothing! If someone is going to be an electrical engineer there is no need to learn history and accounts for example. That’s why most Americans and Europeans don’t know where Zambia is, but they know how to write for example some software. Learning in local language will enhance comprehension of the subject mater, but English should tag along. Students at universities already discuss amongst themselves complicated courses in local languages for better assimilation.

  7. If you ask me,government should have first taken into consideration that not all these teachers in western, southern, luapula provinces etc are familiar with the local language of the province they are serving from.I urge the government to put to table this matter again.Anyway I don’t even see this revision lasting.

    • For example, at the University of Zambia, members of staff are from all corners of the country, then you want to false my children to learn which language? we foreigner lecturers, which language are you going to teach.

Poeple like those link to UK doing PhD, how. Enrolment will start in Grade 4

  8. As someone making easy money teaching English in Asia.
I would say dont use zambian languages instead perfect our English pronunciation
and learn native English Expressions in order for us to be able to compete on a
global standard. Japan, south korea, china are paying big deal
for using their native languages. we can’t afford that. the first four years of children is very
important for language development let them use English it will be more helpful to them.

  9. It is for this reason we have so many educated f o ols in this country.Like these that hallucinate here.Commenting on matters they little or not understand.Bravo all stackholders involved in this new development!

  10. I want to thank to all people who have came up wth an exllent idea.survival skills and recognition of our own lang, our mother lang,God gave us!shuld we neglect our roots?no we are zambians not english,if u mislead yo children in tokng foreign lang only,u hav tu knw yo identity.
