A senior education officer has expressed worry at the numbers of female pupils getting married to some Chinese road contractors in Mpika district of Muchinga province.
Ministry of Education chief standards officer Vengi Sinda disclosed that the trend of school going girls getting married to contractors has become rife in Muchinga province because of the construction works of new roads taking place.
Speaking during the official opening of the Campaign for Female Education (Camfed) annual general meeting in Lusaka today, Mr. Sinda said early marriages have contributed to girl children absconding from school.
He cited Muchinga and Northern provinces as regions that have recorded a high number of girl child absenteeism at grade seven.
Mr. Sinda has since recalled having visited a Chinese road construction camp along the Chama-Matumbo road where he found school going girls married to Chinese nationals.
He has since implored civil societies and nongovernmental organization (NGOs) to initiate programmes that will discourage girl children from getting married to foreign road contractors.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sinda has paid growing tribute to Camfed for supplementing government’s efforts in shaping the future of vulnerable young women in Zambia.
And speaking earlier, Camfed Co-Director for Zambia Regina Lialabi said the organization has continued making positive strides in its quest to empower the orphans and vulnerable young women.
Ms. Lialabi noted that the organisation was determined to ensure that vulnerable young women have access to quality education.

Having married a white man myself in the past BUT Now thankfully divorced, I would not say that there is anything in marrying out of race and caste; if it is for love it’s okay. In this case it is suspicious that they are doing it for immigration purposes, Zambia Immigration must make sure to reject issuing citizenship to these men marrying school going kids on grounds that it is not acceptable.

Zambia should be and is a country of laws. What is the legal age for marriage in Zambia? If we do not set standards in our coubtry someone else will dectate them to us. It should be illegal to touch a girl under 18 years of age. Protect the future through these young beautiful souls. Those Chinese will go back to China and leave these girls helpless with kids. There is no way in hell these Chinese men will go to China with these black girls as wives. Someone needs to look at this matter seriously.
The legal age in Zambia is 16yrs. Most rural kids only start going to school at the age of 13 due to the long distances to the nearest schools. That means by the time they reach grade 5, they are well over the legal age. Therefore the road contractors are very much in order.
Stating their worries is the only thing all government officials are good at. Look mates, we put you in power so that you can govern and implement laws that ensure our common ideals and values are respected. It is foolish to state that you are worried about zambian women marrying foreigners and very much borders on discrimination. Are you talking about under age women or what? Because from my experience and especially in the rural setting many school going females are over the legal age of consent. This article lacks any susbstance unfortunately. This is not news.
The issue is are they getting married at all, either under tradition/customs or legally? I suspect they are just co-habiting any maybe the girls families not even involved? But then again the girls families may be involved and have even received lobola..but for poverty go along

I remember meeting up with a chinese business partner, he brought his fellow china man along. We all greeted each other and afterwards, my business partner’s friend wiped his hand against his coat as if he had just touched something dirty. My business partner was embarrassed, so was I and shortened our meeting to 10 mins. I wasn’t going to be treated like that. The next time I met them, I refused to shake hands. He knew what I meant by that.

I agree with your general sentiment. It’s a free world and there should not be rules on which skin color should go to bed with which skin color. Although I have to agree with Mr. Stephen Banda’s point on the age of these girls. I’m guessing (I’m not 100% sure) that the consenting age in Zambia is 18. If these girls are of a consenting age, they should be free to make their own mistakes. Or find true love, if that’s what it is.
…poverty is obviously a factor….the approach must not only be one sided on our little angels, also involve parents/guardians but mostly the Chinese characters….tell the buggers that they are free to marry but as per our Zambian customary laws, they need to obtain consent from their wives they left in china…for the bachelors, they need to fill in commitment affidavit form at the ministry of home/foreign affairs…..otherwise they will be committing an offence if they don’t …you will see no China man going for the so called marriages of convenience….
