The United Party for National Development (UPND) have issued a statement to allay fears that their party President Mr Hakainde Hichlema was not eligible to contest national elections based on the fact that he has been at the helm of the party for two terms.
In a statement released to the media, UPND Chairperson for Legal Mr Hakainde Hichilema is eligible to contest the 2016 elections according to UPND constitution.

Some calls or rather advise to “consider” changing a party President are lebelled “mischievious and misleading”.
One has to accept that Zambia is a democracy and therefore “wamuyayaya” is nolonger conducive and should be done away with. You have conventions and the like to allow for democratic practices to filter through.

Do not bring PF into your HH problem. Ask your constitution to explain what it means by stating that every 5 years UPND will hold a convention to elect the President. Has this been done before HH declares himself a candidate for 2016. Does he own the party and that he does not need to be re-confirmed or rejected by the convention?
PF is not and has never been scared of HH. If anything we enjoy beating him in elections. It will be easier to beat him again in 2016. This will helped by a potential higher country voting average since it will be a normal election year. To be honest if a leader looses a party an election they have to go no matter what. But in the case of HH it was a close call and it would be reasonable to let him have anther go in just about a year’s time. His circumstances would justify that. The case of Dr. Mumba has to go, whatever the case. RB might have been the cause of his predicament but well he should have out-played RB to show that he has the beef to lead the once vibrant party. I think my obsession with Dr. Mumba has a history. I first meet Dr. Mumba as a vibrant pastor at Mulungushi Hall in his Zambia shall be saved days and I thought he was great. He brought to Zambia some of the great pastors from around the world. Later that year he was broadcasting his Zambia Shall be saved live from Botswana and we were watching it in Zambia. At the time I thought Dr. Mumba was going to make Jesus to come back. But along the way Dr. Mumba got side-tracked, formed NCC which he said was a Christian coalition but later became a political party. Dr Mumba cheated all of us. He needs to repent. The said article does not restrain anyone from calling for a convention, it simply suggests possibility of party president standing as many times as possible.
I would like to believe that this possibility is exploitable if, and only if members are agreed – he can even stand 100 times, as longer as he keeps loosing.
But, the said article does not bar anyone from suggesting to change the sitting president of the party UPND.
If anyone feels they need to participate and be given chance to democratically challenge the incumbent, they cannot be stopped on account of that article; the legal man knows that.

I think UPND as a party is very institutional and not a personal party for HH. I strongly believe that at the right time he will step down. If their constitution allows the sitting president to continue, that surely can’t be a problem to talk about.

This was a close election. HH lost by a whisker. If anything, he deserves a re-match with Edgar Lungu. That is what the late Michael Sata did in 2011. He had lost narrowly to Bwenzani Rupiah Banda in 2008. He did not give-up. Instead, he reset his game plan – re-strategized etc.. You know the rest of the story – It was a TKO – RB left the ring with a bloodied nose and Sata stepped in State House – after four grueling attempts!

Tongas seem to lack the capacity to grasp the reality you are talking about. They caused the tribal tag on themselves and are now not willing to let it go. This tribal tag never existed during Mazoka’s time. However, the Tonga mindset pre-existed Mazoka and has persisted since. Refusing to go away, it showed its ugly face once more when tumultuous Daniel Munkombwe spoke recently.
People vote the way they do, not because they hate Tongas. Rather, it is a demonstration against this Tonga mindset. We all saw how much fall-out took place within UPND when that “a Tonga must takeover from Mazoka” was put into effect. Many prominent non-Tonga members left the party in protest. One would have wished to see an abatement of this Tonga mindset. But no. It still persists.

When that fall-out from UPND was taking place, following the implementation of that infamous “Tonga must take-over from Mazoka” policy; many prominent Tonga politicians dismissed its impact and considered those who were leaving as “good riddance.” Time has proved them wrong.
Now, in retrospect, it can be argued that the best time to have corrected the impact of that unfortunate policy was right there and then – by way of a contradictory action. Had the party attacked that statement then by pushing instead for a non-Tonga to take-over from Mazoka, it would have provided an instant cure. The the matter to rest once and for all. To the contrary the statement was never repudiated publicly. It was, instead implemented. UPND is paying the price, a high price indeed!

It is only right to have HH in the next elections. One thing true is that HH has become a household name in Politics and without such people , then politics and its Democratic dispensetion is Null and Void. People have said now and then, even HH himself has said that to him politics is another Vocation. The man has already what he needs on the planet at personal level; he is a renowned commercial FARMER, A prosperous Businessman, A married man with a Happy Family, He belongs to a clan that is self sustaining, of late he has become a good “STATESMAN”.
