Zesco United disconnect Mighty Mufulira Wanderers

Share

Legendary Mighty Mufulira Wanderers were handed a football lesson by an emerging superpower when they lost 4-1 away to Zesco United at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Sunday.

The defeat was 9-time champions Wanderers heaviest so far since they returned to the FAZ Super Division this year for the first time since 2005.

Goals from Cletus Chota, Winston Kalengo, Jack Mwanza and David Owino ended Mighty’s two-match fairy tale winning run that saw them flirt with a second placing on the log for the last one week.

Chota put the four-time champions ahead for the penalty spot in the 16th minute in what was one-way traffic for the defending league champions.

Winston Kalengo made it 2-0 with a header in the 27th before Jackson Mwanza capitalised on some sloppy defending by Mighty in the 38th minute to put Zesco 3-0 into the break.

Owino slotted in the fourth in the 62nd minute off a Chota corner.

Old guard Mighty’s consolation against the new order Zesco came from the penalty spot in stoppage time that was converted by Moses Lolozi.

The result sees Mighty drop from 2nd to 7th on 6 points from four games played, level with Zesco who rise from 12th to 4th with two games in hand.
