Police officers in riot gear this evening stormed the privately run Muvi TV and forced the station to switch off its transmission 15 minutes into the evening news bulletin.
The News Caster Mutolo Mwamba calmly made a farewell message to the viewers that the station is going off air without going into details.
Earlier today, the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) suspended broadcast licenses for Muvi TV, Komboni and Itezhi Tezhi Radio for what it said was unprofessional conduct before, during and after elections.
And IBA Director General Josephine Mapoma has refuted reports that the suspension of licences is politically motivated.
“The suspension of Muvi TV, Komboni Radio and Itezhi Tezhi is not politically motivated, we don’t know whether these media houses are against PF or not but the decision has been made by board of directors at IBA,” says Mrs Mapoma.

Freedom of the press is a vital ingredient of democracy. It should not matter whether a radio or television station supports or opposes the ruling party. The Board of the IBA Board has erred badly here because it will come back to haunt them and whoever directed the move. Only a sensitive and insecure leader can feel threatened by the press. Let people talk and express their views as it is the best way for them to vent their anger, rather than wait for an eruption of violence. This just goes to show that the Post was shut down in order to stop its opposing views from being published. If Muvi TV is professional and independent, it needs to retract a story that falsely accused ECZ of deducting 8,000 votes from President – Elect Lungu. There was not a shred of evidence that ECZ has done what they are being accused of and the whole premise of this news item is based on unsubstantiated HH claims. If Muvi TV does not have the courage to retract this libellous and factually incorrect story, then they don’t deserve a broadcasting license. Secondly, the Concourt should swiftly pass judgement bearing in mind the consequences of favouring a candidate that lost the election. Majority of Zambians voted against being ruled by a tonga.
Brothers and sisters, I can assure you that the next five years under PF will be hell. For the country to move forward we need flow of information like the bible says “people will perish for lack of knowledge”. In this case our decision must be based on the information we have, so silencing information providers will negatively affect development in the country. The timing of the closure is so wrong. Democracy is foreign to us. Most people think that democracy is only for the people in public offices. Democracy comes with responsibility by all including the media, as well as the opposition party leaders. Democracy ends where your nose ends. The moment you start insulting someone or falsely accusing someone you have over stepped your democracy. The media has a responsibility to report factually and fairly when these tenets of democracy are over looked then the media must be brought to order.
