Zambia has received 580,000 Euros about K6 million for the construction of a modern bus station in Southern Province’s provincial capital Choma.

Choma District Commissioner Sheena Muleya said the construction project had been financed under the Government to Government partnership.

Ms Muleya said the construction project was expected to begin immediately because the funds were already in the country.

The station which would be the first of its kind in the new provincial capital would be situated off Masuku Road near Makalakungunzu area.

Commercial farmers offered government to buy their land at exorbitant prices.

“Choma will soon have a bus terminus, we have been given funds by Germany under the government to government partnership.

“The funds have already been received and we are just working out some logistics before the construction process,” Ms Muleya said.

She said the surveyors visited the site and have also collected the soil samples to test the suitability. She said plans to build an airport and university were still there but they were hindered due to shortage of land in the district.

As for the airport three sites have already been secured but they were still waiting for the Department of Civil Aviation to check the sites
before they could decide to embark on the construction.

“Our biggest challenge is lack of adequate land here but government has a lot of projects for the people of Choma.

“The construction of a University was supposed to begin but we are still searching for land,” she said.

Last year two Chiefs Mapanza and Singani both of Choma and a commercial farmer offered part of their land to government to consider
for the construction of an airport.

Government had been looking for land to construct an airport and a university after Choma was upgraded into a provincial capital of Southern Province.

The land surrounding Choma District was owned by Commercial farmers and others offered government to buy at exorbitant prices.

    • A bus station? This is another example of poor leadership in Zambia. A wise man would have used this aid from Germany to : construct a hospital, sanitation, electricity, water, schools, universities, roads! Germany has some of the best engineers in the world. What a waste of resources to construct a bus station. That is not a priority! That should be at the bottom of the list when allocating what aid will be used for around the country! Uganda is manufacturing cars. Rwanda is manufacturing computers. Zambian is still on the path of dependence on aid from foreign countries.

    • Aid money can’t be redirected to other projects like hospitals etc any longer. In the 70s and 80s govts used to do that but it was seen as a loophole for theft of donor funds.

  1. It only takes foreigners to consider the importance of and fund such projects. For us Zambians, we dont care. It is ubwina nama (Animal culture), as long as we can catch that bus, no problem even if we are boarding from the toilet

    • Civilization has never reached a black man… he still has to be helped even to build a toilet.

  2. That’s what Zambia knows best handouts…If no one donates then we plunder and embezzle resources…What are we failing to build a station that costs less than $500,000?

  3. Constructions to start soon? Where are the designs first? Has a consultant and Architect been involved to design the station first?

  4. That means then that, Mazyandu busses will come back again and dominate the roads and the new bus terminal. What’s happening to Railway transport please somebody tell me? A Morden railway line is what we need. Instead of driving to the copperbelt via Lusaka, we could build a railway line from Choma to Mumbwa direct and to Solwezi from there. Awe mwandi bwafya pa Zed

  5. I wouldn’t support receiving all the time why can’t you have your own ! Very discouraging indeed our leaders must learn to sustain their nations development.
If these people stop feeding you what will you do. Shedding tears perplexed in this generation ! No wonder you are receiving insults from those who feed you Africa wakeup .
You can fend for your self if only you are serious all developed nations just took the problems head on without fear .

  6. So it is borrowed funds again!! We cannot raise that kind of money from our own local resources? I hope we won’t give a foreigner to design the bus station.Let’s empower our own people to design the station.

  7. This is good development news, but the problem with us is that we don’t build for the future. I bet you this station will be small. It’s right in the middle of UPND strong hold so let’s hear from them now.

    • Lombe: I agree with you. This is really a huge problem. Instead of this bus station to carter for projected growth it will only go built for the current bus count. Then we have a similar situation like the flooded Lusaka city center. Then we start borrowing more money to redesign and build another bigger station.

  8. By the time land is found, the money would have been shared as allowances during committee meetings discussing land allocation. Job done Zambian style.

  9. Livingstones bus station is complete except for the parking area that is still to be tarred, pretty flash but sitting empty for 5 yrs now. what a waste, choma will be a waste as well.

  10. This is good gesture from cooperating donor country German but the problem is with us here in Zambia. This money will end up in the pocket of Edgar lungu and his ministers. Shame! Look at all the developmental projects that were started by the late president Mr Michael Sata all have stalled. Paramount chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni speaking people in Eastern province is not happy with the stalled projects especially Vubwi road. Useless president!

  11. I remember the shock of going to INTERCITY/ZR TRAIN STATION just 2 days after passing through HAUPT-BAHNHOFF Train Station in Berlin. Guys, we need are still in Stone age!!!!

We need to pull up our socks & work extra hard.

    Just GOOGLE the photos.

  12. Surely Kitwe should also go with a begging bowl to Germany, this is the worst town in Zambia in terms of infrastructure especially in town centre, bus stations are dotted on main town roads causing dogs and cat kind of driving and even walking.

  13. The money is there so lets put up the state of the art bus station not a katemba please.Money should also be found for KMB and Chisokone market in Kitwe.Twasebana pafula.Look at what they are putting up at
inter city bus station in Lusaka. It is crap.Surely do we have leaders with standards in this country?
