The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has indefinitely suspended all campaign activities of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) in Kaputa Constituency following acts of political violence that resulted in the death of a member of another political party.
In a press statement issued to the media, Chief Electoral Officer Brown Kasaro said the suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in force pending a full review by the Commission.
Kasaro said the Commission’s decision followed the party’s alleged involvement in violent incidents in the constituency that led to the fatality.
The ECZ also expressed concern over a separate incident of political violence in Chivuna Village, Magoye East Constituency in Mazabuka District, which claimed the life of Stanley Sakala.
The Commission said it is awaiting a comprehensive report from the Zambia Police Service before determining what action to take regarding the Mazabuka incident.
With the August 13 General Election drawing closer, the ECZ has urged all political parties, candidates and their supporters to uphold peace, maintain law and order, and strictly comply with the Electoral Code of Conduct.
The Commission further warned that it will not hesitate to invoke its powers under the Electoral Process (Amendment) Act No. 12 of 2026 against individuals or political parties found to have breached the law, stating that violations of the Electoral Code of Conduct will attract serious consequences.
