Government has reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe and quality water for communities in Mungwi District.
District Commissioner, Muma Musonda, says the provision of clean and safe water is key to helping reduce water borne diseases in communities.
Mr Musonda notes that to address water challenges the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation has put up three water points in Mungwi from the 45 allocated to Northern Province.
Speaking to the media
in an interview today Mr Musonda said the three solar powered water reticulation systems points have since been installed.
He named Ndasa, Kapolyo, and Chibao as the areas that have benefited from the solar powered water reticulation system.
The District Commissioner has since urged institutions where water has been installed and Chibao community to maintain the water systems through existing grants, contributions, and not rely on the government for maintenance.
Mr Musonda explained that the community at Chibao has for a long time been drawing water from Malole or Mukosa areas and that the coming of the water reticulation will help address the water problems.
“I want to commend the government for the initiative which will go a long way in alleviating challenges people are facing in accessing safe drinking water in the three areas,” she said.
And community member from Chibao, Prudence Bwalya, expressed gratitude to the government for the piped water system which has also been connected to nearby homes.
Ms Bwalya explained that for many years, Chibao residents have had no water forcing people to trek about two kilometers to fetch for the commodity.
Meanwhile, Mary Lubemba, a trader, said the water system installed at the trading place is a huge milestone for the people of Chibao.
Ms Lubemba narrated that the development will go a long way in improving sanitation levels at the market.
She has since called on traders and community members to guard the infrastructure which has been installed at a huge cost.
