The Ministry of Defence has handed over 190 newly constructed housing units to the Zambia Army at Kenneth David Kaunda Barracks in Chongwe District.
The development marks another milestone in the government’s efforts to improve the welfare of military personnel.
The furnished housing units, comprising 10 high-cost, 62 medium-cost and 118 low-cost houses, were officially handed over yesterday at the barracks, commonly known as Mikango Barracks.
According to a statement issued by Ministry of Defence Principal Public Relations Officer Paul Shalala, the houses were constructed by Zhongmei Engineering Group under a contract awarded by the Ministry of Defence.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu said the houses are ready for occupation by officers and non-commissioned officers.
In a speech read on his behalf by Ministry of Defence Director of Finance Muzyamba Mudukula, Mr Haamaundu said the project is intended to reduce the housing deficit affecting military personnel and improve their living conditions.
He disclosed that more than 600 additional housing units are nearing completion at Buffalo Park Barracks in Lusaka’s Chalala area.
Mr Haamaundu said the ongoing installation of water and sewerage infrastructure at Buffalo Park Barracks will also benefit residents of Chalala, Chilenje and surrounding communities.
He added that the government’s broader objective is to improve the welfare of men and women in uniform by providing modern accommodation across all defence services.
Mr Haamaundu said the provision of decent housing would motivate military personnel as they continue safeguarding Zambia’s territorial integrity and upholding the country’s sovereignty.
Meanwhile, Zambia Army Commander Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele commended the government for investing in improved accommodation for service personnel.
In a speech read on his behalf by Brigadier General Maybin Muyanga, Lt Gen Zyeele said the new housing units are in line with the Army Command’s vision of building a modern and professional military.
He said quality housing is a significant morale booster that will enhance the wellbeing and operational effectiveness of service personnel.
Meanwhile, Zhongmei Engineering Group Project Manager Ye Xinjin said the project was completed on schedule due to strong collaboration between the contractor, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, and the Ministry of Defence.
Mr Ye pledged that Zhongmei Engineering Group will continue maintaining the houses despite the project’s formal handover to the Zambia Army.
