A 44-year-old man in Kasenengwa district has committed suicide after a marital dispute.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba has confirmed the suspected suicide case involving a 44-year-old man who was found dead in Musadane village.
Mr Mweemba identified the deceased as Geoffrey Miti of Musadane village under chief Mshoro in Kasenengwa district.
He said 37-year-old Loveness Phiri, who is the wife of the deceased, reported the matter to Chiparamba Police Post, which falls under Chipata Central Police Station, on July 8 at around 16:00 hours.
He told the media that preliminary investigations indicate that the couple had a domestic dispute on 4th July, 2026 over the use of groundnuts, which was later resolved with the assistance of a family friend.
“However, on the evening of July 7, the deceased allegedly raised the matter again after consuming alcohol before leaving the house carrying an axe and threatening anyone who attempted to stop him,” Mr Mweemba explained.
The Eastern Province Police Chief said the deceased’s wife later went out to look for him after he failed to return home.
“During the search, she found the axe beneath a mango tree before discovering her husband unresponsive nearby,” he said.
Mr Mweemba said Phiri later informed the deceased’s relatives, who assisted her in reporting the matter to police.
He said police officers visited the scene and conducted a physical inspection of the body, adding that no signs of foul play were observed and the family did not suspect any criminal involvement.
Mr Mweemba said the family was advised to proceed with the burial and mark the grave so that in an event that a postmortem examination becomes necessary at a later stage, the body could be exhumed.
