The Cross Border Traders Association (CBTA) has called on governments of the Democratic of Congo and Zambia to scrap off visa fees to encourage cross border trading.
Secretary General, Tadeo Taruvinga said once these visa fees were scrapped off, free trade between DRC and Zambia would become a reality.
In an interview with ZANIS at Kasumbalesa border post today, Mr. Taruvinga expressed happiness that the Congolese government has secured an office at the border where Zambian traders would be taught French for easy communication with their Congolese counterparts and custom officials.
He said the meaning of the trade information desk would greatly benefit traders because they would be well informed on how to do business in Congo.
Mr. Taruvinga advised Zambian cross border traders not to fear the Congolese custom officials by cooperating with them and ensuring that trading was done in a normal way other than smuggling.
He commended the United Kingdom (UK) Department for International Development (DFID-UK) and Unites States Agency for International Development (USAID) for their support in cross border trading.

Its a brilliant idea for the Congolese authorities to introduce French classes for the Zambian immigration officers at the border. Its a step in the right direction.

Since 1994 the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DROC; formerly called Zaire) has been rent by ethnic strife and civil war, touched off by a massive inflow of refugees from the fighting in Rwanda and Burundi. Now one wonders if the Secretary General, Tadeo Taruvinga has made consultations with various and relevant stakeholders on the impact of such a move. Whilst it sounds very good, DRC still has to work on its home security which can threaten peace in Zambia and other outlying areas near DRC. I thus do not at this point support this move at all until measures to police these movements are put in place which USAID and DFID must fund for its viability.
