Shepolopolo coach Beauty Mwamba is confident Zambia will excel at the 2018 African Women’s Cup in November despite finishing fourth at the COSAFA Cup in South Africa.
The Zambia Women’s Team on Friday finished fourth at the COSAFA Cup after losing to Uganda 1-0 in the third and fourth playoff match.
Mwamba told journalists in Port Elizabeth that injuries and the tight schedule of games negatively affected Shepolopolo’s performance.
Zambia made a perfect start with three straight wins – without conceding goal before tumbling in the semifinals when losing 1-0 to Cameroon on Thursday.
“My girls did their part. My team played well and created chances though we couldn’t convert the chances into goals,” Mwamba said.
Zambia played the third and fourth match on Friday despite playing the semifinal match against Cameroon on Thursday.
“But I think the organizers of the tournament should do better next time because you don’t play two consecutive matches in two days,” she said.
Mwamba is now looking ahead to the Africa Cup coming up in Ghana in November.
“At the Africa Cup we can do better than we have done at the COSAFA Cup. I have noted a few things we need to work on,” she said.

African Wild Dogs have vanished from Liuwa Plain National Park in unclear circumstances.
Liuwa Area Warden Gabriel Masaku said the wild dogs were last spotted in the park sometime in 2013 and that operations to establish their whereabouts have proved futile.
Addressing concerns raised by traditional leaders during Lewanika Community Resource Board (CRB) meeting held in Kalabo Council Chamber, Mr. Masaku said it was difficult to trace the wild dogs because they had not been fitted with satellite collars.
He noted that the wild dogs could have migrated to neighbouring countries or wiped out by rabies.
He however said the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) was seeking technical support from Zambian Carnivore Programme (ZCP) which has been partnering with African Parks in collaring predators and undertakes research in Liuwa.
The development has angered Area chiefs who have demanded that both African Parks and DNPW table a comprehensive chronicle of events and circumstances surrounding the specie’s disappearance from Liuwa’s ecosystem.
Chief Lioko of Likulundundu chiefdom wondered why traditional leaders and other key stakeholders had not been informed about the disappearance of the wild dogs, arguing that the specie was fitted with telemetry radio frequency collars.
And Chief Kakuya of Luoke Chiefdom said African wild dogs were one of Liuwa’s pride and wondered how all the packs could have migrated from an ecosystem where they lived for centuries.
Meanwhile, Chief Mwanamambo of Mushukula Chiefdom charged that ZCP should be made to account for the missing wild dogs despite fitting them with collars and monitoring their movement and behaviour patterns.
And Chief Akabati of Nyaala Chiefdom urged DNPW to expedite the search, wondering why the department has adopted the use of footing scouts instead of technological systems such as satellite and other aerial advancements.
Chief Likubi of Upangoma Chiefdom however urged DNPW to set up strategic check points around Liuwa Plain National Park in order to avert the possibility of wildlife trafficking.
The traditional leaders have since resolved to set mid-October as an ultimatum for African parks and DNPW to issue a comprehensive report regarding the disappearance of the African wild dogs.

President Lungu consults Minister of Guidance and Religious Affairs Hon. Godfridah Sumaili during the 70th Anniversary of the World Council of Churches (WCC).
President Edgar Lungu is on today expected to leave for New York for the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Foreign Affairs Minister, Joseph Malanji disclosed that while in New York, the President will deliver a statement during the General Assembly.
Mr Malanji says President Lungu, who is also Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, will further brief the Assembly on the security situation in the region.
Speaking at a Press briefing today, Mr. Malanji said the President will also hold various bilateral talks with World leaders. Mr Malanji said that the visit to New York is expected to strengthen and deepen Zambia’s interaction with the global community and promote Zambia’s national interests.
The President is expected to be back on Friday, 28th September, 2018.
Meanwhile, President Edgar Lungu says it is not necessary for the church and government to be hostile to each other as they both have a common purpose of serving the people.
The Head of State noted that the church and government have an enormous task to save the people hence the need to complement each other.
The President said this during the 70th Anniversary of the World Council of churches in Zambia and the 31st general conference of Council of Churches in Zambia held at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium in Ndola.
“We look forward to seeing churches fostering unity among the people and that it should be in the forefront sowing seeds of love and not discord,” he added.
President Lungu observed that for a long time the country has continued to see the church thrive at the helm of promoting peace and unity across political divides, adding that this should continue.
On national dialogue, the President advised the church to present itself as a guiding institution in the dialogue process without choosing a side, as this will defeat the purpose of national dialogue.
And president Lungu had also commended CCZ for taking centre stage in shaping societies through the implementation of various programs in communities.
He noted that the commitment shown by the church towards the provision of quality health care services to the people, especially in rural areas and also in building capacity in disaster risk reduction and climate change management.
And Minister of National Guidance and Religious Affairs Godfridah Sumaili said that the theme for this year ‘s national day of prayer could not have come at a better time than now when the church and government is supposed to walk, pray and work together.
Ms Sumaili has also called on people countrywide to observe the day of national prayer which falls on the October 18th, and turn up in good numbers to worship God.
This year’s national day of prayer will be celebrated under the theme “facing the future as a reconciled, united and prosperous nation, under God’s guidance”
But Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) President Alfred Kalembo said the church mother body will continue partnering with government in promoting of peace and unity in the country.
Reverend Kalembo assured government that CCZ will remain committed to the delivery of social services to the people especially in rural parts of the country.

In Proverbs 29:18, the Bible tells us that where there is no vision, the people perish.
Indeed, this biblical teaching correctly illustrates the on-going public demonization of China.
In my view, Government is fully responsible for the Zambia-China fallout for two reasons. First, Government has demonstrated lack of vision to harness the Zambia-China trade relations for mutual benefit. Secondly, Government has exhibited lack transparency on the Zambia-China trade thereby unjustifiably offending the public.
It is a pity that the nation has found itself in this mess. No doubt about it, Zambia needs China. The fallout is fatal economically and socially because at the moment, Zambia’s main trading partner is China, followed by South Africa, and Congo-Kinshasa.
Of course, the trade between Zambia and China is driven by copper. Reduced overseas sales of copper in the last few months have driven the monthly decline in merchandise exports, and has been exacerbated further by lower copper prices which have been hit by the intensifying U.S.–China trade dispute. And as a nation, we are slowly but surely feeling the pinch.
What is comforting is that China is seeking to further expand trade with Africa as a way to reduce risk from the U.S. trade dispute, a strategy which was made loud and clear at a two-day summit hosted by China a fortnight ago in Beijing.
No doubt about it, expanding imports from Africa could help China to spread the risk presented by the U.S.-China trade war.
For this reason, China looks to Africa as one of the biggest trading partners. This is evidenced by value of trade with the continent for the January-July period which grew 20% year-on-year, with imports jumping 30% to $56.8 billion and exports to Africa climbing 10% to $59.3 billion.
The growth in China’s exports to Africa has been driven by several factors, including the increasing difficulty of selling to the U.S., as well as expanded exports of solar power equipment to the continent. In addition, China shipped more automobiles and auto parts to African countries as well.
What is comforting further is that at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, the two sides adopted a joint statement and a three-year action plan, laying out plans to deepen cooperation in various fields.
Priority areas of cooperation agreed upon at the summit include boosting trade, nurturing African industry, and strengthening security.
Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed the importance of opposing protectionism and supporting free trade. President Xi also called on African leaders to work together for both sides to develop and prosper together.
Against this background, it is imperative that Zambia abandons the status quo of simply exporting unprocessed copper and importing large amounts of factory-made goods from China.
Instead, Zambia should develop a Zambia-China trade strategy which promotes local production of finished copper and cobalt products in Zambia for the African and global market, such as solar power equipment, batteries for electric cars, and other products, thereby creating local jobs and wealth for the nation.
Secondly, Zambia imports a lot of trucks from China. Through a trade strategy, Zambia could emulate what other African governments have done, such as the Algerian Government, which wooed Chinese truck maker Shaanxi Automobile Group in May this year and has started up an Algerian truck assembly plant through a local joint venture.
Zambia could also emulate the South African Government strategy where State-owned Beijing Automotive Industry Corp., or BAIC, was wooed in July this year to open a passenger vehicle assembly plant in South Africa.
It is folly to think that Zambia can completely cut off trade relations with China. It is no secret that Beijing continues to pour money into Africa, with foreign direct investment totalling about $40 billion cumulatively — close to America’s leading figure of $57 billion.
With the U.S. and Europe growing hesitant to make infrastructure loans to Africa, China’s more proactive lending has made it an even more valuable partner. The question is: on what terms?
At the summit, China tripled its offerings of grants and interest-free loans to Africa as Xi sought to dispel fears that borrowers would fall into so-called “debt traps” — as was the case with Sri Lanka, which was forced to hand Beijing control of a key port last year. Such assistance comprised $15 billion, or about a quarter of a $60 billion aid package Xi pledged to the continent, compared to $5 billion in another package of the same value China offered three years ago.
The offer of $60 billion aid package grants and interest-free loans could anchor Zambia’s strategy. Without a well-thought out strategy, Zambia stands to lose out on this package. This is my point of departure.
What I was expecting from Government leaders that went to attend the summit in China is a well-thought out explanation to the public on what transpired at the summit, and an elaboration on benefits that could accrue to the country.
Sadly, all I have seen is petty defence of Chinese loans without a clear-cut justification and strategy for the future trade relations. And herein lies our tragedy as a nation: where there is no vision, the people perish.
If only Government could develop a Zambia-China trade strategy to tap into the $60 billion package, as well as being transparent on the trade deals so far procured from China, this country is headed for even more economic and social decay.
Secondly, without winning back public confidence in Zambia-China trade relations, I foresee China looking more in the direction of South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe than Zambia. Believe you me, time will tell

Zesco United striker Jesse Were has been dropped by Kenya for October’s 2019 AFCON qualifier against Ethiopia.
The Zesco hit man has been a Harambee Stars mainstay despite his competitive drought for Kenya over the last three years.
Were has score 16 league goals for Zesco this season and is two behind leader Idris Mbombo of Nkana but exited the 2018 CAF Champions League without a goal.
But his Zesco club mate, midfielder Anthony Akumu, and Nkana defender Musa Mohammed have made the cut for the October 10 away date in Addis Ababa and home leg on October 14.
However, Zesco defender and Kenya captain David Owino will miss the qualifier due to injury that has also seen him sidelined with the defending FAZ Super Division champions for the last two months.
Kenya are second in a tight Group F where all four teams that include Sierra Leone and Ethiopia are all locked on 3 points heading into match- day three and four of October’s doubleheader fixtures.
Maamba coal open pit mine provides coal for the thermal plant operations and sells surplus to cement manufacturing companies. Above is the aerial view picture of the mine.
The Centre for Environment Justice has embarked on a programme that will enhance relationships between Nkaandabwe Collumn Coal Mine and surrounding communities with a focus on monitoring delivery of investment agreements and corporate accountability.
Centre for Environment Justice (CEJ) Executive Director Bornface Mumba said during a stakeholders sensitization meeting held at Kaluli Development Foundation (KDF) yesterday that his organization has designed a project called mining community voices as a platform through which the mine company and community will be able to build better understanding between each other.
He said this will be achieved through a Corporate Social and Environment Responsibility (CSER) community System.
Mr Mumba said the project will run for one year and the outcome will determine the possibility of scaling up to cover other communities.
He said the mining community voices project will embrace the multi-stakeholder engagement approach by working with government, Collumn Coal Mine, the community, Civil Society Organizations, faith based organizations and traditional leaders through consultation and training.
Mr Mumba said the project will be implemented within the organizations’ core mandate of promoting sustainable livelihoods through community voices, strategies and other workable approaches.
And CEJ Projects Technical Advisor Rodney Katongo said during his presentations at the same meeting that the project will be able to give a voice to the community around the mine over their priority needs under the company’s corporate social and environment responsibility (CSER).
Meanwhile Sinazongwe District Commissioner Protacial Mulenga has welcomed the project and called for smooth engagement of the community and stakeholders during the implementation process.
Mr.Mulenga said that he was happy that the project will enable communities around the mine to have a voice in the programs and projects the company will be delivering under its Corporate Social and Environment Responsibility.
He said that Government was there to provide an enabling environment for investors to implement their investment plans without interference by just providing guidance in order to ensure that communities around such investments also benefit through corporate social and environment responsibility.
The Zambia United National Freedom Fighters Association (ZUNFFA), has called for an increase in the budgetary allocation for women empowerment and programmes.
Association National Secretary for Women and Youth Affairs Bessie Chanda said there is need to prioritize women empowerment programmes as they are vital in reducing poverty levels in the country.
Mrs. Chanda explained that this is because women are a critical component to any country’s development agenda hence the need for them to be empowered.
She pointed out that women are also more powerful in driving the economy of the country despite most of them being marginalized and majority are in the informal sector.
Mrs. Chanda noted that even without being properly supported more women are engaging in various farming activities and businesses including street vending in order to sustain their lives and family members.
She said this is why there is need for government to increase funding to women empowerment activities so that more women can improve their living standards.
Mrs. Chanda suggested that government should put up plantations in all the provinces across the country where women can be encouraged to engage in established farming activities.
She noted that these activities can go a long way in improving their livelihood, adding that empowerment programmes should not be seen to be at macro levels only.
Mrs. Chanda further, advised government to also consider making education and health free for all Zambia’s in order to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor in society.

First Lady Esther Lungu says Moringa, a multi-purpose tropical tree has economic benefits.
Mrs. Lungu said the planting of Moringa can significantly empower women and youths in Zambia from the cycle of poverty.
ZANIS reports that the First Lady said this at State House today when she received 50,000 seedlings from the Moringa Creative Innovation Director and Founder Professor Chishimba Mowa.
She said seedlings will go towards the Esther Lungu Foundation Trust and will be grown and piloted in Luapula province to be used as a tool for rural industrialization and creation of wealth for poor farmers.
The First lady commended Prof. Mowa and Zambia Forestry and Forest Industries Corporation (ZAFFICO), for extending their corporate social responsibility to the Esther Lungu Foundation Trust.
“Moringa can be used for generating agricultural incomes, developing food processing industry, mitigating climate change, fight stunting, non-communicable diseases as well as improve household and national food security,” she said.
And Prof. Mowa said he decided to invest his energies in researching on Moringa despite him being in the diaspora.
He said moringa medicine is the best remedy and recipe for arresting 54 percent cases of people that die from malnutrition.

President Lungu speaking during the groundbreaking of kafulafuta dam
President Edgar Lungu has reaffirmed government’s commitment in ensuring that all citizens have access to clean and safe drinking water by the year 2030.
The Head of State said it is disheartening to see how women and girls particularly in the rural parts of the country move long distances with containers perched on their heads in search of water, a scenario he noted will be reversed by government, to ensure that the commodity to taken to people’s door steps.
President Lungu was speaking yesterday afternoon during the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the Kafulafuta Water Supply System project in Masaiti district.
The Head of State noted that the water project is timely, as it will improve water supply in Ndola and the surrounding towns of Luanshya, Masaiti and parts of Mpongwe on the Copperbelt Province.
He affirmed that water resource management and development is central to sustainable growth and poverty reduction.
And President Lungu has stated that the Kafulafuta water project which is wholly funded by the Zambian government will cost a total of 449 million United States dollars.
The Head of State noted that the project is intended to improve the quality and quantity of raw water for treatment and use in Ndola, Luanshya and Masaiti will also result in the construction of water collection infrastructure and transportation pipeline system.
President Lungu further highlighted that the project once complete, will produce 125 million cubic meters of water to its beneficiaries and see the creation of jobs in other industries.
“Other benefits to be accrued from this project include improved health outcomes and increased business opportunities for local suppliers of goods and services through the 20% policy,” President Lungu stressed.
And President Lungu has echoed government’s resolve to counter the adverse effects of climate change which has continued to threaten the water sector by aggressively improving water supply and sanitation services in the country.
The Head of State further affirmed that government will continue to expand and develop water infrastructures such as dams.
President Lungu has also thanked the government of the Republic of China and other co-operating partners supporting various water supply and sanitation projects for this gesture.
The Kafulafuta water supply system project is being undertaken by China National Complete Engineering Corporation.
