Lusaka Province Minister Bowman Lusambo says campaigning for Miles Sampa for the Lusaka Mayoral election is proving to be easy because he is a sellable candidate.

Mr Lusambo who is also Deputy Campaign Manager for Mr. Sampa said the PF candidate has a proven track record of active community work.

He said Mr. Sampa is the only one who was capable of delivering according to the expectations of Lusaka residents.

Mr Lusambo said the other eight candidates for the Mayoral position are just jokers.
He was speaking when he distributed some campaign flyers for Mr Sampa along the Great East road in Lusaka on Saturday.

“We have nine candidates participating in the Lusaka Mayoral elections but we have only one candidate who is capable of delivering on the expectations of the people of Lusaka,” Mr Lusambo said.

He said Lusaka is such an important city to be given to dramatists, actors and songstresses.

Mr Lusambo also castigated NDC candidate Saboi Imboela who has repeated her intentions to reintroduce street vending if she is elected Mayor.

The Lusaka Province Minister said Ms. Imboela is just a dreamer who is still dreaming about composing choruses for her music.

“People should not just come and say ‘I will reintroduce street vending’ because we as government have decided to ban street vending through an IS because we have the powers to remove all vendors from the streets as government). But because you just want to excite people and tell them what their ears want to hear, that is why she is talking about reintroducing street vending she doesn’t have the powers to do so. In the Council, there are 32 PF councilors and Imbolea does not have any councilor. So who does she think is going to support her proposal to bring back vendors?” Mr Lusambo asked.

Studens Raise K13,000 To Support Fellow Vulnerable Students

Zambian Open University Student Union (ZAOUSU) meeting in Kitwe
Zambian Open University Student Union (ZAOUSU) meeting in Kitwe

The Zambian Open University Student Union (ZAOUSU) meeting in Kitwe on Friday, 6 June, 2018, has established a student revolving fund that will support, by way of small interest free loans, fellow students who are vulnerable and need temporal relief to enable them take examinations by settling balances in tuition fees.

The Union members have collectively pledged an initial contribution of K13,000.00 towards actualization of the fund and resolved to encourage former and existing students to join the campaign to raise funds by contributing as low as K20 to support vulnerable students and students at the risk of not taking examinations for failure to pay the required 100 percent in school fees.

The Union noted that while Government has a responsibility of educating its citizens, students and Unions cannot sit and do nothing but provide leadership through making a contribution towards this responsibility.

As a Union, we believe time has come for students and Unions in our Universities to begin supporting each other and complement government efforts of educating the nation

The Union resolved to engage in fundraising and income generation activities whose proceeds shall go towards the Student Revolving Fund and has since called on well-wishers from within the country and abroad to provide assistance towards the Revolving Fund.

The Union has since constituted a 5-member Committee led by the Union Vice President, Maxwell Chisase, three Union members and one Member of Staff to be nominated by the University to develop the criteria for identifying students who need the support and all operational needs.

The Student Union of ZAOU was recently elected and has been on a working visit to Solwezi, Kabwe and Kitwe Regional Centers to interact with students, share concerns and find solutions to some of the problems facing the University and the Student populace. The Union intends to meet the Board of Directors, Management and the University Senate to discuss some of the problems in the regional centers and offer solutions.

CTPD expects better Maize price this year

2

The Centre for Trade Policy and Development says the year 2018 promises to be far much better in terms of the Maize price than the K60 that was offered to the farmers in 2017.

CTPD Head of Programmes and Research Brain Chiko Mwiinga said the injustices the small-scale farmers were subjected to last year when they were paid an amount way less than what was paid in 2016 is likely not to be the case this year.

Mr Mwiinga said it is most likely that the price will be above the paltry K60 they received as a reward for their hard work in 2017

“Our concern as CTPD is that the benefits that accrue to the Zambian farmer should not be left to chance. They should be planned for with active participation of the farmers themselves,” he stated.

Mr Mwiinga added that CTPD is also concerned with governments silence over the 2018 crop marketing season road map.

He said it is not yet clear how much and where government intends to purchase grain this year and at what price.

“Our appeal to small scale farmers is that they should exercise caution as they trade their grain in this marketing season, if they exercise patience, they stand to get a good for their produce, farmers should consider exploiting opportunities offered by trading platforms such as the Zambia Commodity Exchang, these would give the farmers the real market prices for their commodities and trading through the platform can actually be more profitable,” he said.

“Despite the projected low yields in terms of grain harvest for crops such as maize, we urge the government to maintain an open boarder policy on maize trade; this ensures trade predictability and can lead to investments inflows into the agriculture sector. The maize we expect to have plus carry over stock is still enough sitting mostly with the private sector is still enough to support both domestic and industrial consumption,” Mr Mwiinga observed.

“We also would like to advise the government around the perceived failures of the E Voucher, we are of the view that poor implementation of the initiative is what needs to be addressed, not reverting to conventional FISP which just breeds corruption and pilferage of public resources. We cannot as a country continues mishandling a sector which is a source of livelihood for the majority of the country’s population.”

Mr Mwiinga said it is regrettable that the nation does not seem to learn from mistakes especially when it comes to managing the agriculture sector.

Works and Supply Minister Felix Mutati has called on civil servants in the country to reduce on bureaucracy if the country is to woe more investors.

Mr. Mutati said bureaucracy resulting from paper work if not handled well has the potential to scare away investors who come to invest in the country.

The Works and Supply Minister noted that bureaucracy has become the biggest enemy of progress in the country but that government remains hopeful that the civil service can change and perform to the expected standards.

ZANIS reports that the Works and Supply Minister said this at the Provincial Administration in Mansa today when he addressed heads of government departments.

He observed that political leaders in the country are there to facilitate the developmental agenda and wondered how development will be implemented if civil servants take long to implement programs initiated by political leaders due to bureaucracy.

He warned that government will not tolerate the tendency by some civil servants to loose files deliberately once they have failed to perform saying it is now time for hard work that bring results.

Mr. Mutati applauded the provincial administration in Luapula Province for its efforts towards wooing investors in the province saying the efforts of the province are in line with government policy of diversifying the economy.

He added that the results of the efforts of the provincial Administration to woe investors have already started yielding results as has been witnessed by companies like Mansa Sugar that are already investing in the province.

Mr. Mutati is in Luapula Province to grace this year’s Provincial Agriculture and Commercial Show and while, in the Province, the Minister will tour MMRP Mining in Mansa, Mansa Sugar in Chembe, and tour developmental projects in Mwense district.

Minister of Foreign Affairs , Joseph Malanji has thanked Turkey for its support to Zambia’s development agenda in various sectors.

Mr Malanji who was flanked by Zambia’s Ambassador designate to the Republic of Turkey, Mr Joseph Chilengi, said Zambia appreciates Turkey’s support in the health, tourism, education and media sectors in its quest to achieve the Vision 2030 of becoming a prosperous middle income country.

The Minister said this during a bilateral meeting with Turkish Co-operation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) President, Dr Serdar Cam in Ankara yesterday.

“Some of the priority areas that Zambia would like TIKA to focus its support include tourism development; capacity building as well as mechanisation in agriculture and agro-processing, support to SMEs, power generation, especially renewable energy, construction and infrastructure development, value addition in manufacturing and investment in areas that have high backward and forward linkages such as steel production,” Mr Malanji said.

The minister also called on TIKA to help Zambia mechanise the agriculture sector to enhance food production through donation of tractors and provision of technical know-how for efficient agricultural production.

Mr Malanji expressed Zambia’s desire to host the TIKA regional office in Southern Africa.

“Zambia is strategically situated in the centre of southern Africa, with ease infrastructure interlinks, making it an ideal location for TIKA offices to cover other countries in the region. Attaching a TIKA officer in Lusaka would go a long way in boosting trade and investment and overall cooperation between Zambia and Turkey,” Mr Malanji said.

And Dr Cam said TIKA was ready to support projects in Zambia to further strengthen relations between Zambia and Turkey.

He said TIKA was ready to fund priority projects identified by Government in various sectors and provide capacity building including support to Small and Medium –sized Enterprises (SMEs)

Earlier, the Minister visited Integrated Waste Management (ITC), a waste management company, which transforms waste to energy.

Mr Malanji said the waste-to-energy project was important to Zambia because it is one of the strategic options in waste management , which would ultimately support Government’s efforts in combatting epidemics such as cholera, make the environment cleaner and generate power.

The Minister urged ITC to consider travelling to Zambia to explore the possibility of investing in waste-to-energy projects in the major cities such as Lusaka, Ndola, Kitwe and Livingstone

“For instance, Lusaka alone generates more than 600,000 tonnes of solid waste every year and other cities that produce substantial waste include Ndola, Kitwe, and Livingstone,” Mr Malanji said.

Today’s Message: Content Whatever the Circumstances

4

Today’s Scripture

“…I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”

(Philippians 4:11, NIV)

Content Whatever the Circumstances

It’s easy to get so focused on our dreams, our goals and what we want that it consumes us. We can get to the point where we’re not going to be happy until it happens. But I’ve found that if we have to have something in order to be happy, our lives are out of balance. When our goals and dreams start to frustrate us, when we lose our peace and are not enjoying life, that’s a sure sign that we’re holding on too tightly. What’s the solution? You’ve got to release it. Freedom comes when you say, “God, I’m turning it all over to You. You know my desires, and You know what’s best for me. I’m choosing to trust You and Your timing.”

When we learn to be content whatever the circumstances, it takes away the power of the enemy. It takes away his ability to frustrate us. Not only that, but by our actions, we show our faith in God. Choose to trust in His timing; choose to live in peace and joy, and find rest knowing that He has good things in store for your future.

A Prayer for Today

“Father, today I choose to trust in You. I release frustration over the dreams and desires in my heart, knowing that You know what’s best for me. I choose to trust in Your timing because You are faithful in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Inmates implored to take advantage of skill programmes

Government has pledged to continue working closely with the church in improving the welfare of inmates across the country.

Kasama District Commissioner (DC) Kelly Kashiwa said inmates need spiritual and material support to enable them to fully reform into responsible citizens.

Mr. Kashiwa said this in Kasama today during the commemoration of the International Day of Prayer and Action for inmates held at Kasama Boys Secondary School hall.

He has since challenged inmates to take advantage of various skills empowerment programmes taking in correctional facilities to acquire a trade to use after living prison.

The DC further stated that offering life skills to inmates has proved to be a success in the reformation process.

And Zambia Correctional Service Northern Province Commanding Officer Sekele Nyambe expressed happiness with the positive change of attitude among inmates in the region.

In a speech read on his behalf by his deputy, Reverend Happy Chileshe, Mr. Nyambe said the transformation of inmates is attributed to thorough training of Correctional Officers in areas such as psycho-social counseling and human rights, which has enabled them to promptly attend to the welfare of inmates while in custody.

He further disclosed that Correctional facilities in Northern Province are doing fine in agriculture production resulting in the sufficient availability of food rations for inmates.

Mr. Nyambe however, appealed to various stakeholders to continue providing support to correctional facilities in order for the inmates to fully reform into productive citizens.

Meanwhile, the inmates from Milima Correctional Facility in Kasama, who spoke through their representative Peter Chipasha, thanked government for equipping them various life skills such as carpentry, bricklaying and tailoring among others.

The inmates have since pledged to use their acquired skills to become better citizens and sustain their livelihood after leaving the correctional facility.

The commemoration of International Prayer Day and Action was held under the theme, ‘empowering of inmates is an investment in national development and public safety from a prisoner to a governor’.

Zambia U20 host South Africa U20 in Sunday friendly

2

Amajita South Africa U20 have jetted-in for Sunday’s junior international friendly against Zambia at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

The friendly is Zambia’s final warm-up match before they host Burundi on July 14 at the same venue in a 2019 U20 AFCON final round, first leg qualifier.

Zambia lost 1-0 at the same venue to Malawi on July 1 in their first friendly.

Malawi, incidentally, are South Africa’s opponents in their final round decider this coming weekend at home.

Amajita coach Thabo Senong said upon arrival on Friday night in Lusaka that he was hoping the 2017 U20 AFCON champions will give them a good test before getting down to business end of things this weekend.

“We have just come from the off -season so we are really unfit. So we just felt that it was important if we could play a friendly game so that we can bring our players to their best close to our game against Malawi,” Senong said.

“We chose Zambia as the best opponents because Zambia has the necessary quality players and they can actually give us an idea of what to expect against Malawi.

“Honestly the result of these friendly’s don’t reflect what will happen in the qualifiers.

“When you play friendly’s, you focus on the performance of the team, the implementation of the tactics and the process of your principles. Result’s don’t matter that much.”

Nkana, Power draw in fantastic derby

1

Power Dynamos battled from two-down at home on Saturday to finish 2-2 against Nkana at Arthur Davies Stadium in their Kitwe derby.

All four goals came in the second half of the Kitwe derby that saw Nkana take the game to their hosts but found defender Faustin Bodakila and Power’s third choice goalkeeper in inspired form.

The deadlock was broken in the 55th minute when Ronald Kapamba gave Nkana deserved lead and five minutes later Walter Bwalya sent Power reeling to the ropes with the second.

But Power regrouped and hit back in the 66th minute when Alex Ng’onga scored his first derby goal against Nkana since 2014.

Five minutes later, Larry Bwalya fired in a breathtaking long-range goal that befitted this riveting Kitwe derby to see the two sides share the spoils.

The result sees Power stay unbeaten in the derby for a second straight game after defeating Nkana 2-1away in the first leg last April across the road at Nkana Stadium.

However, the result does little for both sides’ causes with Power now 7th on 38th points while Nkana have 39 points and at number five.

Nkana are fifteen points behind leaders and their next opponents Zesco United who are in action on Sunday with 15 games left to play before the 2018 title is decided.
