The Health Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) has clarified that the introduction of licensure examination for health practitioners is meant to have competent and skilled health workers in the country.
HPCZ Senior Public Relations Officer Terry Musonda says the country needs skilled manpower which will serve the nation diligently.
Mr Musonda said this in an exclusive interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Lusaka today.
He called on health students in training institutions to fully apply themselves in the practical oriented courses so they may acquire more skill in order to obtain the professional license to effectively perform in the industry.
Mr. Musonda explained that the Council is on a transformative agenda of ensuring that the medical industry is served with qualified and skilled personnel as it is one industry which is delicate.
“As a council it is necessary to assess the competence of various practitioners before they are given practicing licenses”, he said.
He added that the licensure examinations were introduced last year and has since received overwhelming response.
Mr. Musonda disclosed that the Council is set for the May examinations and appealed to students to apply themselves and take the opportunity to obtain the licenses.
He stated that there has been calls from the general public for the various health practitioners to be well equipped and skilled in various fields.
The Impounded Government VehicleA joint operation by Government Transport Control Unit (GTCU), Road Transport Safety Agency and the Zambia Police Service in Solwezi district has impounded government vehicles for abrogating government regulations.
The operation that was mounted at different points around the district intercepted and impounded nine government vehicles due to driving without a weekend pass and failure to produce the competence certificate as required when driving a government vehicle.
Speaking to ZANIS, during the operation yesterday, North-western provincial GTCU inspector, Catherine Tembo said that operation that has been going on for over a month now has seen a reduction in such cases.
Ms Tembo said it is saddening to note that some government workers still do not want to comply with the regulations despite several reminders.
She said government officers should comply with the clear stipulated law on use of government vehicles to avoid misunderstanding with the unit.
“Government workers need to understand that the government is losing a lot of money because of abuse of government vehicles causing development to lag behind in the country”, Ms Tembo said.
Meanwhile, some local motorists commended the efforts by GTCU and encouraged the unit to extend operations to other districts in the province.
Musanya Musanya said such operations are very vital to help keep government officers in check because the abuses of government vehicles are a cost on tax payers.
And The Controller of Government Transport (CGT) unit in Muchinga Province yesterday swang into action impounding several Government vehicles and motorbikes for various offences.
The team lead by Head of CGT unit in Muchinga Province Saint Chisha impounded a total of 17 vehicles in Chinsali alone within two hours of a surprise operation mounted at Nambuluma police check point , about 15km from Chinsali Town.
The team in Isoka led by Christopher Katongo , CGT officer, also impounded three government vehicles for not following stipulated rules and regulations of Government motor vehicles.
In an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) shortly after a successful operation in Chinsali and Isoka districts, Mr. Chisha said from the 17 Government vehicles impounded yesterday in Chinsali, 10 drivers have been charged for various offences and they are expected to pay penalties of fines ranging from K350 to K750 at the Provincial administration accounts section on Monday morning.
Mr. Chisha warned that all the officers who have been charged will be followed up if they do not show up tomorrow to pay the fines.
Mr. Chisha has since warned Government officers to desist from misusing government vehicles adding that government was spending a lot of money to service and repair the vehicles using tax payers money.
Mr. Chisha also disclosed that similar surprise operations will be conducted to ensure that the rampant abuse of Government vehicles is controlled.
Mr. Chisha said among those charged, are drivers who were moving without weekend passes, un authorized log books and failure to produce their competence licenses.
He noted that most Government drivers in the district ignore the stipulated rules and regulations of driving a Government motor vehicle stressing that such kind of mentality portrays a bad picture towards Government.
Mr. Chisha who is also the Chief Human Resource Officer at Provincial administration, further said the team in the province will not spare anyone abusing Government motor vehicles.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia has issued a stern warning that it will be compelled to cancel and disqualify anyone found committing acts of violence in the by-elections slated for 5th June 2018.
ECZ Public Relations Manager Margaret Chimase says the commission is deeply concerned with rising levels of intolerance and political violence that have characterized the nominations on 3 may 2018 so far.
Ms. Chimase has stated that the electoral act and the electoral code of conduct both empowers the commission to suspend all campaigns and disqualify candidates that will be found wanting.
She has since appealed to all political parties to urge to refrain from acts of violence or risk disqualification.
Meanwhile ms. Chimase has revealed that the commission received reports of intimidation from their officers of an incident in Luangwa ward, Nyimba District that took place during nominations to which the commission is actually addressing.
She says the commission reaffirms the stakeholder expectations agreed upon by the church mother bodies and political parties on Monday 30th april 2018.
Ms. Chimase adds it is important that political parties honor their expectations which include the need for political parties to refrain from clashing and verbal disputes in an addition to provocation which can propel undesirable acts of violence.
Vice President Inonge Wina’s Senior Private Secretary Sheila Siwela
The Church says it is unchristian for society to abandon and fail to look after orphans and vulnerable children in the country.
Vice President Inonge Wina’s Senior Private Secretary Sheila Siwela says there is need for Christians in the country to abide and follow the commandments and teachings of Christ of coming to the aid of orphans and the underprivileged.
ZANIS reports that Mrs. Siwela said there is more that needs to be done by Christians to uplift the welfare of orphans and vulnerable children in society.
Mrs Siwela said society needs to follow the teachings of the church in order for it to reach out to orphans and the disadvantaged in society.
Mrs Siwela said this when she led the women fellowship from the St Columbus Presbyterian Church in Lusaka to donate assorted items and an undisclosed amount of Electricity units to Chilenje Transit Home.
Receiving the items on behalf of the Chilenje Transit Home, Esther Zulu thanked the St Columbus Women fellowship for the gesture as it will help in meeting the daily needs of the children at the centre.
Meanwhile, Vice President of the women fellowship Mary Muchai urged society to pray for people looking after orphans and vulnerable children so that God could bless them to care for the children and raise them into God fearing and productive citizens.
Mrs Muchai said society needs to embrace a spirit of giving and helping in order for it to reach out to vulnerable and underprivileged people in society especially orphans and the poor in villages.
Zambia Under 20 yesterday beat Malawi away in a junior international friendly played in Lilongwe.
Young Chipolopolo is in Malawi on a five-day training camp en route to Rwanda this weekend to play their 2019 U20 AFCON qualifier in Kigali.
Striker Francesco Mwepu scored the game’s lone goal in the 27th minute to continue showing promising signs he displayed during Zambia’s ill-fated campaign as 2017 COSAFA U20 Cup hosts last December.
Zambia will depart Malawi on Wednesday ahead of their May 11 first round first leg date against Rwanda.
The final leg will be played on May 18 in Lusaka with the winner advancing to the final qualifying stage in July to face Sudan or Burundi for a place at next year’s tournament in Niger.

A meeting of Chiefs in Lusaka Province chaired by Senior Chieftainess Nkomeshya Mukamambo II of the Soli people to discuss the draft National land policy reached a deadlock yesterday.
Most Chiefs from Luangwa, Rufunsa, and Chirundu argued that they cannot endorse resolutions from the Nkomeshya chiefdom before studying it and sitting down with their subjects in their own chiefdoms.
ZANIS reports that among the Traditional Leaders that objected to endorse the resolution were Senior Chief Mburuma, Chief Mphuka of Luangwa, Chieftainess Mpanshya, Chieftainess Shikabeta of Rufunsa and Chieftainess Chiyawa of Chirundu.
The five chiefs said the draft National land policy was a critical document which needs time to study and consult the subjects.
And Chieftainess Nkomeshya urged the traditional leaders to carefully study the policy document and consult their subjects so that they can come up with resolutions that will benefit them and Government.
The Chieftainess said development of a National Land Policy is a noble and basic requirement to enhance national development which needs to be transparent, accommodating and participatory so that the final
Product is acceptable to all Zambians. The Chiefs resolved to have the next meeting on May, 16th in Chongwe
District after consulting their subjects and stakeholders.
MINISTER of Works and Supply Honourable FELIX MUTATI is happy to note that the Zambezi Drifter Pontoon at Kazungula crossing point which had broken down has resumed operations.
MR MUTATI commended the ESCO staff for adhering to his one week ultimatum he issued last week.
The Minister said he is delighted with the quick response and commitment that ESCO management has demonstrated adding that the travelling public and business entities will be able to conduct business normally.
He also said the Zambia Revenue Authority will be able to collect the revenue they have been losing amounting to K35 million per day.
This came to light when ESCO Chief Executive Officer Engineer PATRICK LUTANGU NYIRENDA announced that the newly bought gears have been fitted and the pontoon resumed work at about 09:00 hours today.
Last week MR MUTATI directd ESCO management on Friday, April 27th 2018, to repair the broken down Zambezi Drifter pontoon without fail.
MR NYIRENDA yesterday announced that the spare parts that were being expected from South Africa had arrived.
He had assured the public that the repair works on the pontoon would be complete on Saturday 5th May 2018 and anticipated resumption of normal operations on Sunday, May 6th 2018.
“However, am glad to announce now that we managed to fix the gears and normal operations started this morning at about 09:00 hours. The general public can now be free to conduct their business on time,” he said.
He has since apologised to the public for the inconvenience caused by the non-operation of one of the pontoons.
And MR MUTATI said once the second pontoon was fixed, the revenue collected would be able to facilitate the upgrade of the district and bring it to acceptable standards.
Veterinary Authorities in Milenge District have warned people in the area to desist from consuming sick livestock.
Milenge District Assistant Veterinary Officer Beaurick Nyambe observed that some community members in the district have a tendency of slaughtering livestock when they discover that it is diseased.
Mr. Nyambe said the community members sell or eat the diseased animal which is dangerous to the health of the people.
ZANIS reports that the Veterinary Officer said this when he addressed farmers at Milenge Central Agricultural Camp.
Mr Nyambe said there is need for people who keep livestock to always ensure that their animals are checked by veterinary officers before slaughtering them to ensure that they are not diseased.
Mr. Nyambe further urged famers to have their chickens vaccinated against a new castle disease which affects chickens in the months of May, June and July.
He said the veterinary office in Milenge has since begun conducting the vaccination exercise and that farmers should take advantage to protect their chickens.
Minister of Community Development and Social Services Emerine Kabanshi
Community Development Minister Emerine Kabanshi says the Patriotic Front Government remains committed to empowering vulnerable groups with the means to conquer poverty by increasing the number of people benefiting from the social transfer initiative.
Ms. Kabanshi says Government has devised robust alleviating initiatives targeting vulnerable groups who include older persons, persons with disability, female headed households and the chronically ill.
She was speaking in Choma last night at the provincial administration grounds when she handed over a brand-new land cruiser, 93 bicycles and office equipment to the department of social welfare in the district for the enhancement of social cash transfer activities.
Ms. Kabanshi said government is committed to redoubling social protection efforts by expanding the social transfer coverage, scope and budgetary allocation.
She disclosed that in Choma alone, the programme has reached out to 5,636 households enabling government to effectively impact 33,816 people in the district.
The minister commended the community in Choma for exhibiting commitment to her ministry’s empowerment programmes by braving the evening cold in the open grounds to await her arrival last night to handover the motor vehicle, bicycles and office equipment.
She handed over the items around 20.00 hours.
Ms Kabanshi also distributed blankets to the vulnerable people to cushion them against the cold season.
Speaking earlier, southern province assistant secretary Abraham Kondomone said the social cash transfer programme has positively impacted on poverty alleviation among vulnerable households in the province.
District Commissioner Sheena Muleya also praised government for scaling up the programme to cover more households that are in need of social protection.
Two United Party for National Development (UPND) Councillors from Chilanga have refused to support the preferred party candidate Charmaine Mel Musonda on moral grounds.
The two Councillors, Arthur Moonde for Nakachenje Ward and Peter Mulubisha for Chinyanja Ward, told journalists at a media briefing held at Chrisma Hotel in Lusaka yesterday afternoon that the UPND erred on moral ground to settle for Charmaine Musonda and will find it difficult to campaign for a candidate who is morally bankrupt.
“Having thoroughly consulted our people in our Wards and Chilanga district at large on the adoption of Musonda Charmaine Mel, we came to conclusion that the UPND has erred on moral grounds to settle for a person whose morality is being questioned,” Councillor Moonde told journalists.
Although the party followed the preferred process of adopting Charmaine, Moonde explained, the UPND leadership never consulted key stakeholders in the party including Councillors.
“On the strength of this serious anomaly, we resolved never to campaign for Charmaine and even if we did, our people will never accept Charmaine for what she did.”
The two Councillors also accused Charmaine of harbouring acute hatred for the deposed area Member of Parliament after he was convicted and sentenced to death for murdering his security guard.
Moonde indicated that Charmaine did not speak to her conscience honestly before accepting the adoption to contest for the vacant Chilanga seat.
Mr Moonde alleged that it was an act of hatred that led Charmaine to accept the adoption otherwise she could not have accepted the adoption.
“To our surprise, Charmaine accepted the adoption…. this means, she had a hand in his conviction.”
Moonde observed that Mukata does not deserve the kind of betrayal he has received from a person who claim not only to be a partner but also a close ally.
“For those of us who appreciate the work Mukata did in Chilanga, we will find it hard to turn our backs against him and we will find it difficult to campaign for any person that betrays the man who has done so much for the Chilanga.
Meanwhile, Councillor Mulubisha told journalists at the same briefing that he agreed with his counterpart Moonde that Zambia as a Christian nation does not support immorality.
“It is for this reason we come to put records straight that, Charmaine is not our candidate because supporting her will be endorsing immortality which the UPND endorsed after adopting Charmaine.”
Mr Mulubisha said that he had doubts that the people of Chilanga will give Charmaine a vote after betraying Mukata who did a lot for the constituency during the time he served as an MP.
And Councillor Mulubisha ticked of calls by UPND election chairman Garry Nkombo’s advice to UPND members to use violence to win an election.
Mulubisha explained that violence has no room in a civilised society like Zambia.
“As Civic leaders, we condemn any form of violence because what comes out of violence is destruction.”
“The earth was formless and empty…and God said, ‘Let there be light’…”
(Genesis 1:2–3, NIV)
Something Out of Nothing
Do you need a miracle in your life for something that seems impossible? With man it may be, but we serve the all-powerful God, and He can create something out of nothing! He can make a way when there seems to be no way and open doors that seemed closed forever!
Genesis tells us that in the beginning, God created the heavens and earth, but before He spoke the world into existence, it was formless and void. If God can make the world out of nothing, He can take the empty places in your life and create something beautiful, too! He can speak light into your darkest hour. He can take your formless dreams and give them shape. He can resurrect your dormant gifts and talents! He can make your crooked places straight!
Remember, you are created in the image of almighty God. There’s power in your words, and there’s power when you’re in agreement with Him. Start saying what God says about your situation. Speak life to your broken dreams today. Speak hope into the hopeless places. Keep an attitude of faith and expectancy because He will turn things around for you and create something out of nothing!
A Prayer for Today
“Father, I trust that You are willing and able to make a way for me where there seems to be no way. Fill me with Your peace and hope. Give me a vision for all You have for me and thank You for making something out of nothing in Jesus’ name. Amen.”
Limulunga Maternal and Child Health Coordinator Nella Mwala says factors which contribute to maternal death should be addressed promptly.
Speaking at the first ever quarter maternal death review meeting for Limulunga district, Ms Mwale said the district recorded 3 maternal deaths in the first quarter of this year.
She noted that it was vital for every woman to delivery safely stating that any gaps in service delivery contributing to women dying whilst giving life should be curtailed to promote safe motherhood.
The Coordinator said it was pleasing that government noted the need for nurses to go through induction for the promotion of safe motherhood so that they are equipped with midwifery skills.
And chairing the meeting, District Administrative Officer Mubiana Ngenda sounded the need for all stakeholders to work in collaboration with the District Health Office to facilitate safe delivery.
Mr Ngenga appealed to residents of Limulunga to work amicably with medical personals to prevent complications which would arise in child labour.
Meanwhile, Limulunga District Health Director Dr Douglas Singini urged the committee to put forward recommendations which could aid the elimination of maternal death by improving service delivery.
He also disclosed that the district had received a number of medical staff in the last recruitment adding that the development would support the goal to save lives in child birth in the outskirts of Limulunga district.
The maternal death review committee was a requirement from the World Health Organisation (WHO) to promote competence and inform policy makers on any existing gap in service delivery.
