South Africa’s biggest opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has said that it invited United Party for National Development(UPND) leader HAkainde Hichilema to South Africa to celebrate his release with the party.

Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane’s chief of staff, Geordin Hill-Lewis, said on Wednesday that Hichilema came to celebrate his release with the DA.

“We wanted to have a celebration on his release from prison, where he was treated disgustingly, and of which the details are only starting to emerge now,” Hill-Lewis said.

“We wanted to have a celebration with him but the impression we had was that we wouldn’t be allowed into Zambia, so we arranged for him to come here.”

Hill-Lewis said Hichilema would be attending and addressing the DA’s caucus meeting on Thursday morning, ahead of the sitting in Parliament.

He is also set to attend the DA’s federal executive meeting on Friday.

Zambian opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema is in South Africa for a three-day visit, during which he will be attending, amongst others, a question session addressed by President Jacob Zuma in Parliament on Thursday.

Mr. Hichelema arrived in Cape Town on Wednesday afternoon where he is set to be hosted by Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane, who was prevented from entering Zambia in May when he wanted to attend his court case.

Mr. Hichilema was recently released from prison after four months and seven days, where he was held on charges of treason because, it was alleged he obstructed Zambian President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade.

Mr. Hichilema’s United Party for National Development is part of a network of opposition parties in the region, organised under the Southern African Partnership for Democratic Change, of which Mr. Maimane is the chairperson.

The network is meant to give opposition parties a voice in the region, and it was also used in this instance to effect pressure on governing parties to respect human rights.

Mr. Maimane, together with Economic Freedom Front leader Julius Malema, were invited by Lungu for a meeting when he attended the recent Southern African Development Community summit in Pretoria to talk about their criticism against Hichilema’s arrest.

Both Mr. Maimane and Mr. Malema declined, with Mr. Maimane saying he would only agree to such a meeting when President Lungu committed to democracy.

The Association of Vendors, Traders and Marketeers of Zambia (AVTMZ) and Auto Phones Factory Limited have signed a trade agreement aimed at supplying goods to vendors through a vending machine .

AVTMZ president, Fredrick Tembo says the development will reduce on travelling expenditure which the vendors incurred when purchasing their products for re-sale.

ZANIS reports that during the signing ceremony in Kitwe on Tuesday night, AVTMZ president, Fredrick Tembo said the agreement will enable his members get various products at cheaper prices than travelling to other places to access the goods.

He added that the agreement will also help to reduce on the number of vendors that have engulfed many cities across the country thereby bringing sanity.

He urged his member to welcome the move as emphasizing that it is meant to benefit them.

Meanwhile, Kitwe District Commissioner, Binwell Mpundu expressed delight with the move which he said is timely as the country is slowly switching to a smart way of doing things.

The District Commissioner said the general public is happy with the decision of relocating street vendors from the Central Business District (CBD) adding that people have always wanted to be associated with a smart way of doing business.

He added that the vending machines will play a significant role of bringing sanity to many CBDs across the country as it will replace the old way of vending that was disorderly done.

And Auto Phones operations Manager, Lawrence Nyirenda said the vending machine will be operating 24/7 and can only consume about a kilowatt per day adding that the machines will be dis[played all over the night.

He stated that the machine will make selling of various goods easy and many people will afford as the products will be sold cheaply compared to what they pay to other suppliers.

Mr. Nyirenda said as regards to food items, the general public is assured of sanity as the machine will be 100percent sealed.

‘Wawa’ Chongo Jnr wants to follow father’s footsteps

20

The son of the late ex-Chipolopolo star defender Harrison “Wawa” Chongo has launched his football career with an audacious target of surpassing his father’s achievements in the game.

Wawa’s first born son Castro Chongo is currently attached to FAZ Division One side Young Green Buffaloes of Lusaka.

Defender Chongo, 22, said his late father, who played for Zambia and Mufulira Wanderers, inspired his decision to take up football.

“I have started football after being inspired by my late dad. I couldn’t watch him during his peak because was I a kid but after growing up I have been watching his videos. Furthermore, a lot of people say good things about him. They say he was a good player,” Chongo said.

“When he was coaching Mufulira Wanderers I used to follow him at the stadium and I remember, I also used to clean his souvenirs,” he said.

Wawa, who died in 2011, was a veteran of four Africa Cup finals in which he won a silver medal in 1994 and a bronze in 1996.

“I want to achieve a lot in football, looking at what dad did for the nation and our family. I want to exceed his level.”

He admits carrying the Wawa Chongo tag gives him pressure to impress.

“The name is too big in Zambian football so it gives me pressure whenever I am on the pitch. I know everyone expect a lot from me. Maybe if I make a mistake people would say you are not playing like your dad,” he said.

“Football is a sport where people will cheer you when you impress and also insult you when you falter.”

Castro added “But one thing that makes me feel better is that I have got too much support. People would come in numbers just to watch and support me as they remember dad. I have actually taken up his jersey number two.

Castro’s father spent a decade at Al Tawun in Saudi Arabia.

Striker Fashion Sakala has completed the Zambia roll ahead of Saturday’s 2018 FIFA World Cup Group B qualifier showdown against Algeria in Lusaka.

Fashion joined camp on Tuesday evening and took part in his first training session with the team on Wednesday morning at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

The striker from Russian club Spartak Moscow was the last player Zambia coach Wedson Nyirenda was awaiting from the first leg clash against Algeria to be played at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka on September 1.

“I am looking forward to the Algeria game but I will not be in a position to promise anything but will leave it to God,”Fashion said.

“-But I will try by all means to put in my level best if I am named in the final squad.”

And joining Fashion at Wednesday’s training was controversial Lusaka Dynamos striker Fwayo Tembo.

Fwayo popped up at training three days after Zambia camp commenced.

This is after Fwayo earlier snubbed his call-up for the Algeria game.

“Well there is nothing to comment on Fwayo,” Nyirenda told reporters at Nkoloma.

“He joined the squad and trained with us this (Wednesday) morning.

“If he makes the team, he does it, if he does not, it’s like that.”

However,Nyirenda will be without Under-20 midfielder Edward Chilufya who failed to get his Algerian visa for the final away leg on September 5 in Constantine.

Chilufya is based at Swedish club Djurgarden.

Zambia creates a Railway Development Agency

Transport Minister Brian Mushimba

Government says it has created a Railway Development Agency ( RDA) to facilitate the separation of railway infrastructure and maintenance from railway operations.

Minister of Transport and Communications Brian Mushimba says this is aimed at allowing Zambia Railways Limited ( ZRL ) to focus on running its business operations competitively and in a sustainable manner being bogged down into costly maintenance of the permanent way.

Mr. Mushimba says this part of government’s reforms of the railway transport including the introduction of the quota system for bulk cargo which he said will compel bulk transporter of various categories of cargo to transport a minimum of 30 percent of cargo by railway.

He added that government has also under the reforms come up with promotion of Public Private partnership between the Zambia Railways Limited and other Railway operators in the SADC region such as Trans-net.

Mr. Mushimba said the initiative was also aimed at promoting private Railway Operators to ply on the ZRL permanent way at an access fee.

” These reforms are aimed at transforming the ZRL into a viable competitive, reliable and safe railway operator, ” he said.

The Minister said this at the inauguration session of the new board of Directors of Zambia Railways Limited ( ZRL ) held at the railway firm’s corporate office in Lusaka, this morning.

Mr. Mushimba said as principal body responsible for corporate governance of the ZRL, he will expect the new board to represent the government and stakeholders interest in the transformation process of the railway firm.

He also noted that following the nullification of the concession with the Railway System of Zambia ( RSZ) five years ago in 2012, government has seen an eighteen percent growth in the traffic of the ZRL.

Mr. Mushimba said this was as a result of government’s strategic focus of the railway sector which he said was bearing fruit adding that arising from recapitalization efforts by the railway company, the operation network has also grown by 44 percent after the commencement of operation on the Nacala Corridor and the revival of its operation in the inter-mine region on the Copperbelt province.

He also noted that in the section where full track rehabilitation has been undertaken by the ZRL, freight trains are now able to run at an average speed of 50 kilometers per hour.

” There is however a lot more ground to be covered especially in relation to the transformation of the Zambia Railways. The major task is the implementation of a full rehabilitation and upgrade of the railway infrastructure to reach our ( government’s ) desired speed of 80 kilometers per hour for freight trains and , 120 kilometers per hour for passenger trains, ” he said.

Mr. Mushimba said to achieve this, there was need to come up with result based performance management contract with the new ZRL Board for the purposes measuring the contribution of the Board of Directors towards the attainment of the company’s strategic goals and objectives.

The new board is led by Lawyer Mr. Linyama Lubinda, Dr Getrude Akapelwa, Dr Evans Chabala, Mr Robert Mutonga, Mr. Nicholas Chinkwenya and a Mr C. Musonda.

And Mr. Lubinda later said his Board will work hard to ensure that the national railway company operates and delivers to the expectations of government and the people of Zambia.

He said his board would ensure that ZRL management and staff operate in set standards adding that their performance would be reviewed as regularly as possible to ensure the viability of the railway company.

Over 500 Congolese flee to Zambia in one day

Over 500 Congolese asylum-seekers have fled into Zambia within a day, the biggest single entry of new arrivals in three years.

The 500 Congolese asylum-seekers were received on Wednesday 30 August 2017 through Chiengi, Kamponge and other border entry points in the north. The new arrivals are in addition to a sporadic and continuous stream that has characterised refugee inflows from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) into Zambia over the past three years.

UNHCR Representative to Zambia, Ms Pierrine Aylara, confirmed the arrival of the over 500 arrivals, and believe that more are being hosted by local community and the agency, working with local authorities, is conducting a head-count to ascertain exact figures as the new arrivals are entering through different border entry points with some un-manned.

Working with the Government of Zambia through the Office of the Commissioner for Refugees (COR) in the Ministry of Home Affairs and, specifically, the District Joint Operations Committee (DJOC), as well as the Zambia Red Cross Society, UNHCR is providing basic humanitarian assistance to the new arrivals and who are currently relocated to Meheba Refugee Settlement in North Western Zambia.

“We have continuously been receiving a steady inflow of new arrivals from the DRC for some time now. UNHCR together with the host Government and the Zambia Red Cross Society, are doing everything possible in our limited capacity to protect and assist the new arrivals pending durable solutions. The limited resources available makes it challenging for us to effectively respond to the silent emergency. We call upon our generous donors to assist with additional funds to enable us address the basic humanitarian needs of new arrivals” said Ms Aylara.

From 1st January to 31st August 2017, over 3, 000 asylum-seekers from the DRC have been received in Zambia cumulatively, with August alone accounting for about a 1,000. In 2016, some 2, 893 Congolese asylum-seekers were recorded. Kaputa, Mpulungu, Nsumbu, in Northern Zambia, Kipushi, Kakoma, in Norther Western Province and Kasumbalesa, on the Copperbelt, have been the entry points.

As of 31 July 2017, the total population of Congolese in Zambia (asylum-seekers and refugees) was 25, 063.

Zambia currently hosts some 58,000 refugees and others of concern, mostly from Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia and Uganda. The vast majority reside in two refugee settlements – Mayukwayuka in Western Province and Meheba in North Western Province, while others live in urban areas or are self-settled in various locations.

A Charcoal trader has been picked up by police in Ndola in connection with the fire that ravaged Ndola’s Kapalala Market Wednesday morning.

Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga told Journalists in Ndola that the Charcoal trader has been arrested for criminal negligence over the gutting of Kapalala market.

Mrs. Katanga said police have withheld the suspect’s name to protect him from possible lynching from affected shop owners.

She said police investigations have concluded that the fire started after a brazier was left unattended to by the trader after he went to offload charcoal that was being brought to the Market.

“The suspect has been arrested and charged with criminal negligence contrary to section 372 chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia. The suspect was taken to the scene and six witnesses testified and will appear in court tomorrow for the subject offence,” she said.

Mrs. Katanga said the brazier exploded and the fire spread to other wooden makeshifts.

The Provincial Police Commissioner also revealed that 12 people have been arrested for looting while the market was burning.

“12 people were arrested in connection with looting and are detained in police custody, while the goods are recovered,” said Mrs. Katanga.

And the opposition UPND says it is alarmed and saddened about the Kapalala market fire.

“We sympathise with the marketeers and families who have lost their goods and businesses, and most likely their livelihoods in this fire. This tragedy comes just months after the much politicised City Market inferno, which up to now the report from the police service as to what caused the fire has still not been released,” party Spokesman Charles Kakoma said.

“We hope and pray for a thorough and professional investigation into this latest inferno at Masala market and demand the timely release of the cause of fire. We also wish to advise the Patriotic Front government not to politicise this unfortunate, but suspicious tragedy,” he said.

Mr Kakoma has since called upon government to assist the marketeers and their families during this difficult time to alleviate their loss of businesses and suffering.

Earlier, Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo has called for thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of fire that engulfed Kapalala market in Ndola last night.

Mr. Kampyongo has described the incident as regrettable noting that the nation had only started enjoying relative calmness.

“It is sad and regrettable when we have enjoyed relative calmness and peace that we have to yet record another disaster in an inferno that has gutted Kapalala market,” Mr Kampyongo said.

He asked police officers to reactivate themselves and remain active to ensure tranquility of the state.

“I appeal to people to remain calm and for our men in uniform it is time to reactivate ourselves and not relax thinking all is well,” Mr Kampyongo said.

He asked for citizens to remain calm and not speculate on the cause of fire allowing for investigations to conclude.

Ndola’s Kapalala Market gutted

27

The Ndola City Council is saddened by the fire which has engulfed almost the entire Kapalala Market in Masala.

Addressing the media today, Ndola City Council Town Clerk Wisdom Bwalya who was at the scene with His Worship the Mayor Mr. Amon Chisenga said it was unfortunate because hundreds of traders had lost their livelihoods.

“It pains us deeply to announce that almost the entire Kapalala market in Masala, Ndola has been gutted by a fire that swept through the trading place in the early hour of today,” Mr Bwalya said.

“The fire which is reported to have started around 01:00hrs was quenched by alert fire fighters with the help of local residents. I was at the scene from around 01:00hrs.”

He noted that hundres of traders have been affected by the inferno and many livelihoods curtailed.

He said the total cost of damaged goods and merchandise is yet to be ascertained and relevant authorities are on the ground to ascertain the cause.
“Relevant authorities are on the ground carrying out the necessary investigations to establish the exact cause of the inferno and updates will be given to the media and through media to the public,” Mr Bwalya said.

“Our hearts are with the hundreds of marketeers who have lost their livelihoods.”

Mr Bwalya has commended the efforts of the residents and fire fighters in trying to quench the fierce inferno and ensuring that no life was lost.

This is contained in a statement by Ndola council Public relations manager Tilyenji mwanza.

Meanwhile, Kabushi member of parliament Bowman Lusambo who is also Copperbelt Minister described the incident as saddening.

“Information gathered so far indicate that the fire started around 01:00 Hours. The cause of the fire has not yet been identified and the fire has since been put out by a brave team of fire fighters with the help of the local people. I would have visited the scene this morning but I am away in Lusaka attending to Cabinet duties but I wish to assure my people that I will visit the scene later today and empathise with the victims of this devastation,” Mr Lusambo wrote on his Facebook page.

Zambia Trains Hundreds of Teachers in the run-up to Africa Code Week 2017

4

Skilled Volunteers from SAP CSR EMEA successfully trained more than 350 local teachers over the weekend as part of the Train-the-Trainer sessions organized by SAP and Africa Code Week partners at Lusaka International Community School (LICS). Participants learnt coding with Scratch, a free programming language designed by the MIT Media Lab to teach coding to the young generation in a fun and interactive way. Everyone received 90 minutes of training, a USB with course notes and Scratch pre-loaded, together with a training certificate upon course completion.

Spearheaded by SAP in 2015 with over half-a-million young Africans introduced to coding so far, Africa Code Week officially returns to the continent from 18-25 October with a goal to empower another 500,000 across 35 countries. Actively supported by UNESCO YouthMobile, the Cape Town Science Centre, the Galway Education Centre, Google, 15 African governments and over 100 public and private partners, the award-winning initiative is on a mission to bridge the digital skills gap across the African continent by empowering its future workforce with coding skills. While 8-17 year olds learn how to program their own animations, quizzes and games using Scratch, older learners (18-24) get introduced to web technologies (HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP and SQL) and architecture.

“There is no transformation of education through ICT without proper training of teachers first; hence the importance of the Train-the-Trainer sessions organized every year in most participating countries,” says Claire Gillissen-Duval, Director of EMEA Corporate Social Responsibility at SAP and Africa Code Week Global Lead. “This is where the transfer of skills and knowledge takes place as SAP skilled volunteers equip teachers with the teaching materials they need to make coding a daily reality in the classroom,” Gillissen-Duval continues. Last year more than 5,600 adults were trained as part of the 25+ Train-the-Trainer sessions organized all over the continent.

“Throughout the weekend, Zambian teachers showcased sheer determination and commitment in supporting our efforts to bridge the digital divide and empower younger generations with job-relevant coding skills,” Gillissen-Duval adds. LICS teachers don’t just teach coding to their students already, but they are also actively engaged in an outreach program that allowed 22 teachers from other schools (Good Shepard Community School, Kalingalinga Community School, City of Hope School and Ngómbe Community School) to participate in the Africa Code Week training. More Zambian teachers eager to engage their pupils in Africa Code Week 2017 flew from all corners of the country (sometimes as far as Solwezi) to attend the training at LICS and share best-practices with fellow teachers and SAP Master Instructors. They are now getting ready to introduce coding to their own pupils and students during Africa Code Week Zambia – taking place from 9 to 15 October 2017, which is 10 days earlier than most countries in order to accommodate the local school calendar.

According to Charles Mwanza, CEO of Hackers Guild and Africa Code Week implementing partner in Zambia, “Africa Code Week is teaching more than coding: it is encouraging young people to ‘think like coders’, for more and more coders will be needed to overcome society’s most pressing, increasingly complex challenges. Africa Code Week is a fantastic opportunity for Zambia’s youth to learn the skills they need to thrive in the global knowledge economy,” he concludes.
