Movement for Multiparty Democracy has commenced provincial party mobilisation tours with Southern province being the first to be visited by NEC members led by the two vice presidents of the party Ann Chungu and Mutolo Phiri.

The party through its Vice President in charge of politics Mutolo Phiri, said it has embarked on a nation wide mobilization tour of provinces so as to revamp the once vibrant party, ensure that it continues to guide the nation politically and thank the membership across the country for backing the National Executive Committee which they elected at the national convention in May 2016.

Mr Phiri expressed pride in the members of party who have continued to work hard for the party under difficult circumstances.

He said the party was a beacon of hope as regards reuniting the country which is has not healed from the divisions of the 2016 general elections as it has a national identity as reflected on the membership on the ground across the country.

He said members should guard the party jealously as its death would mean the end of multiparty democracy in the country increase the chances of regionalism saying “MMD is different from other political parties in the country as it was a movement of Zambians and not a party formed out of frustrations by individuals with personal ambitions.”

Mr Phiri also expressed happiness that the membership in Southern Province had chosen the most difficult thing to do of sticking with their party (MMD) in very difficult times even when the easier thing to do was to dump the former ruling party and join the most attractive party in the Province (UPND).

He said it is such convictions from the membership across the country which will help the party to rebuild and become the party of choice to the public.

And speaking earlier party national Secretary Raphael Nakacinda said MMD members should stop pre-occupying themselves with the 2021 general elections but instead concentrate on rebuilding the party.

He said with challenges faced in the party in the last few years which left the party with with unbearable wounds; party structures should be occupied with healing the wounds and rebuilding the party as opposed to thinking of future elections.

He said it important to realise that politics is a game of numbers which requires members to ensure that they do their home work before they rush into elections as they risked being embarrassed.

The NEC members on tour of Southern Province include Tobias Kamufukache who is chairperson for Energy, Geoffrey Mulenga the National Youth Treasure among others. Also accompanying the NEC are provincial officials.

Meetings have been held in Livingston where Kazungula and Livingstone Districts officials where addressed, in Kalomo and Choma where members anxiously waited to be addressed by NEC members up 19 hrs.

Energy and financial services firm Fenix International is working to deploy pay-to-own solar home systems in Zambia leveraging telecommunications giant MTN’s mobile money platform.

In partnership with the Swedish Embassy in Zambia, which committed nearly $3-million to the project up to 2020, Fenix is taking its first step in expanding its flagship product, ReadyPay Power, across Africa, after successful deployment in Uganda.

ReadyPay Power, which is also supported by aid of $750 000 from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), provides offgrid customers access to affordable, expandable solar home systems to power households and small businesses.

In a deal with MTN, Fenix customers with the installed system will make instalments of around $0.20 a day through MTN Mobile Money until they have paid for the system in full.

“Approximately 15-million Zambians live without access to the electrical grid, representing 80% of the total population and 95% of rural residents,” explained Fenix International CEO Lyndsay Handler.

With backing from the Swedish Embassy and USAID, Fenix expects to reach 850 000 rural Zambians by 2020.

“Our solar home systems not only provide light and energy, but our unique Fenix credit score makes upgrades and additional life-changing products accessible to committed customers as their needs and incomes grow,” Handler noted.

Fenix uses the continuous micropayments through MTN’s mobile money to generate a credit score, thereby enabling customers to access additional system upgrades or financial services.

“With MTN’s distribution networks, we’ll be able to reach unbanked and offgrid customers. Once power and credit are established, the possibilities to bring other life-changing products – from smart phones to financial services – are endless,”

“Over 90 per cent of rural Zambians lack access to electricity and have no options other than dangerous candles and kerosene lanterns to light their homes.

“This is the harsh reality of the situation which we are working to change. Our solar home systems not only provide light and energy, but our unique Fenix credit score makes upgrades and additional life-changing products accessible to committed customers as their needs and incomes grow.

“Ten years from now, we hope to eliminate the use of candles and be an important part of our customers’ lives across Zambia.”

Wane Ngambi, Head of Mobile Financial Services, MTN Zambia, adds: “The transformative relationship between MTN Mobile Money and off-grid energy has been an exceptional revelation.

“MTN Mobile Money now sits at the heart of many households, who use these simple and secure services daily to light up their lives. For us, this is all part of the mission to create mobile solutions which make a difference.” Handler concluded.

LCC procures equipment to counter noise pollution-Mayor

Lusaka Executive Mayor, Wilson Kalumba and Vodafone Zambia Retail Operations Head, Muleya Choopa interact.

Lusaka Mayor Wilson Kalumba has disclosed that the city council has procured equipment to measure the level of noise and counter noise pollution.

Mr Kalumba said Lusaka faces many challenges including beer drinking particularly drink and drive, underage drinking, noise pollution from bars and churches, bars operating outside permitted hours.

He was speaking on Tuesday during a consultative meeting between Lusaka City Council and bar operators, beer manufacturers and the Zambia Police Service.

The meeting was held to remind bar owners on their legal obligations and to also hear concerns from bar owners.

Mr Kalumba said the meeting was very interactive and many suggestions were made concerning measures to address proliferation of bars, protect businesses, protect jobs, counter underage drinking by demanding IDs.

“As Mayor of Lusaka I informed the meeting that my office has sourced USD 100,000 which will be used to buy breathalysers for traffic officers, other equipment and technical support. We need to make it clear to the residents that officers will be adequately equipped and the tools will act as a check on beer drinkers to ensure they moderate drinking,” Mr Kalumba said.

Let’s rename Livingstone town to Mosi-O-Tunya-Dr Phiri

Former Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Permanent Secretary Dr Sam Phiri has proposed the renaming of Livingstone City to Mosi-O-Tunya.

Dr Phiri said time has come for the city to be re-named Mosi-O-Tunya from Livingstone.

Dr Phiri who is also a lecturer at the University of Zambia further proposed the removal of explorer Dr David Livingstone’s statue from the edges of the Mosi-O-Tunya Falls.

He said the statue should be replaced with the statues of the people who led Dr Livingstone to the falls such as his slave Chuma.

According to history scholars, Chuma and Susi were natives from central African who attended and accompanied Dr Livingstone.

Chuma and Susi came to attention after their employer Dr Livingstone died at Chitambo’s village in modern day Zambia and they decided to carry his body all the way to Bagamoyo on the coast of modern day Tanzania where it was handed over to the British authorities and transported to London for burial.

Chuma was only a boy when Livingstone and Bishop Charles Mackenzie freed him from slavers in 1861 and from that day Livingstone became his only “family”.

And Dr Phiri has also proposed the renaming of Zambezi River to its proper name Liambai.

“We have done it before in the case of Fort Jameson, Abercorn, Feira, Broken Hill and Fort Roseberry and Northern Rhodesia. We can surely Africanise these things,” Dr Phiri said.

Stars give fans a glimpse of their upcoming albums at intimate listening party.

Dancehall supremo, Kaladoshas, and hip-hop rising star, Chanda Mbao performed for a crowd of music-loving guests at an exclusive listening party where they unveiled their upcoming projects under the auspices of Vodafone Music.

Kaladoshas and Chanda Mbao, the minds behind such hits as ‘Nipaseko Chance’ and ‘My Town’ respectively, displayed a high-end entertainment platform that showcased their soon-to-be-released albums, ‘My Time’ and ‘The Patriot.’ Both albums, upon their release, will be available exclusively on the Vodafone Music app for a week before other platforms.

Chanda Mbao was the star of the night. Accompanied on stage by frequent collaborator ,Scott, the ‘Zambian don doda’s’ energetic performance had the audience in a frenzy. His singles ‘Wave’ and ‘Understand’ were crowd favorites and had the exuberant audience on their feet.

Kaladoshas gave a background to his songs “Gentleman” and “So sorry”. The former being about a lady in a relationship who does not appreciate the efforts of her man, and the latter about a man who is not fully over a past relationship, and is apologizing for taking his current girlfriend for granted. He also gave a heartfelt performance of the touching song “Mothers tears

Both performances were reinforced by an extremely talented band know as “The Verdict”. The band featured an amazing saxophone player from Nigeria, named Michael, who mesmerized the rapturous spectators. Talented singers Ariel and Becky contributed backing vocals for the main acts .

The listening party came off the back of the recent launch of Vodafone Music – a music streaming mobile application which allows music lovers to access over 30 million local and international songs across multiple genres.

Speaking at the occasion, Vodafone Zambia Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Michael Horup expressed his delight at the steady growth of Zambian music. He noted that the industry would continue to see an upward trend within the context of digital distribution.

“Vodafone Music is designed to perfectly fit Zambia’s digital generation – it’s simple, immediate and unique. This service offers a large selection of music genres with incredible personalisation that enables people to enjoy and discover new music at the touch of a button,” said Mr Horup.

Mr Horup further highlighted how the new service would help curb piracy: “A recent study shows a strong correlation between increased music streaming and a reduction in piracy. We believe that our music offering, tailored for the local market, will help to combat piracy, which is among the biggest challenges of the music industry; in addition to this, we believe we are giving local artists a platform and base upon which to gain revenue and widen their audience across the continent.”

And Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM) President Njoya Tembo acknowledged the need to integrate technology in the fight against piracy.

“We are grateful that Vodafone has chosen to engage the Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM). Being the only recognised music body in the country by the Government of the Republic of Zambia, we are excited with the company’s intentions especially in line of the fight against piracy,” said Mr Tembo.

More competition for Mweene at Sundowns

6

Kennedy Mweene is staying on at Mamelodi Sundowns but has received more competition for the number one shirt with the 10-time South African champions.

The Zambian number one has been with the CAF Champions League titleholders since June,2013 when he initially joined them on a three-year deal after six seasons at Free State Stars.

But Mweene has over the last two seasons struggled to hold down a spot in the starting XI that he has lost Uganda goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

And now, Mweene has added competition with the arrival of another high-profile African number one following the arrival of Ghana first choice Razak Brimah.

Brimah replaces South African Wayne Sandilands who was not offered a contract extension and has since left Pretoria and moved down the road to Johannesburg and joined Orlando Pirates.

“I have been number one for the Black Stars for four to five years now. You know the Black Stars, we are the best in Africa, and so it’s not easy to be number one in the national team,” Brimah told Kickoff.com.

“Here [at Sundowns] all the goalkeepers are in their national teams, so that’s good for the club and it’s good for the goalkeepers because there will be a lot of challenges. I am here so that I can play so that I can still be number one in the national side.”

MINISTER of Labour and Social Security Joyce Simukoko has threatened to invoke provisions of the law to prosecute and imprison employers who ill-treat workers.

And Mrs Simukoko says employers who have been defaulting National Pensions Scheme Authority (NAPSA) and Workers’ Compensation Fund Control Board (WCFCB) contributions will soon be taken to court.

Mrs Simukoko said this yesterday when she made an impromptu visit to AVIC International, Eva Products Zambia Limited and Oriental Quarries to check on work conditions and whether the companies remit statutory financial obligations.

Her delegation comprised labour inspectors from her ministry, officials from NAPSA, WCFCB and Zambia Institute of Human Resource Management.
Mrs Simukoko has vowed to strengthen inspections of companies to ensure that labour laws are adhered to.

“We have stopped informing you about our coming because you will be preparing yourselves. We have come as a big group because when we send a small group, there are issues of corruption,” Mrs Simukoko told AVIC International construction department manager Wang Zhiming.

The minister said she is interested in knowing if employees have contracts and if the contracts are in conformity with the labour laws and International Labour Organisation.

“We are not joking. We don’t want casualisation because we shall now be taking you to court and imprison you for six months,” Mrs Simukoko warned.

Mrs Simukoko said workers are crying on a daily basis because of poor working conditions and remuneration.

She directed NAPSA and WCFCB to immediately verify the figures if the companies inspected are remitting statutory financial obligations.

She said workers should be given transport, overtime and housing allowances and have the companies registered with the WCFCB as per labour laws.

Meanwhile, Mrs Simukoko blasted supervisors at Eva Products Zambia Limited when she discovered that the company has not been submitting NAPSA contributions and is not registered with the WCFCB.

Mrs Simukoko threatened to have their company closed and owners deported to South Korea if they do not adhere to the labour laws.

“We can imprison you for six months because workers in this country have been crying because of employers like yourselves,” she said.

Mrs Simukoko urged foreign investors to respect Zambians.

At the companies visited, Mrs Simukoko also took time to interact with workers and listen to their concerns.

She assured them of government support.

MINISTER of Higher Education Nkandu Luo has bemoaned the lack of private sector support to advancement of tertiary learning in the country.

Professor Luo said this in Lusaka on Tuesday during the launch of Barclays Bank Zambia’s K3.2 million scholarship programme which will enable over 50 underprivileged youths access higher education.

Prof Luo said private sector support to education is low in Zambia.

“I just received this beautiful letter from the managing director of Barclays Bank Zambia asking me to come and launch this bursary scheme to support education. What could a minister do other than jump on this undertaking? This is the way it should be,” she said.

Prof Luo said with support from cooperating partners, Government would like to come up with a loan and bursary fund to educate Zambian children.
She urged cooperating partners to consider supporting tertiary education just like they have done to general education.

“There is no better gift a parent or a government can give to a child than education. I did not understand this when I was growing up because my parents always told us that they would rather die poor and without property as long as they educate us. My parents did everything possible to educate the eight of us,” Prof Luo said.

And speaking at the same function, Minister of Community Development and Social Services Emerine Kabanshi said her ministry cherishes the increased access to education, especially among the poor and vulnerable.

Ms Kabanshi said although 45 percent of women and 57 percent of men have attended secondary or higher education, initiatives aimed at increasing literacy levels in society still remain crucial.

Barclays Bank Zambia managing director Mizinga Melu said her institution’s scholarship programme will take into consideration both financial needs and academic merits.

Ms Melu said the bank will work with the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services to identify vulnerable young people who will benefit from the scholarship programme.

Farmers urged to store their maize with ZAMACE while they wait for price improvement

Farmers in Moyo chiefdom of Pemba district found knitting the 50 Kilogrammes bags of maize for sell at one of the Food Reserve Agency depots in the area.
FARMERS have been urged to utilise the Zambia Agricultural Commodities Exchange (ZAMACE) platform to stock their produce in secure warehouses and wait for prices to improve.

ZAMACE executive director Jacob Mwale said once a farmer deposits their grain with the exchange, they will be issued with a warehouse receipt that will be used as collateral to acquire finance and inputs.

Mr Mwale said when grains are deposited, a farmer is assured of safety and can negotiate for a better price for their produce with their preferred buyer.

“The important thing about ZAMACE is that farmers will secure their crops in the warehouse and be given a receipt, which entails that the farmer will not be in a panic mode to sell.

“The warehouse receipt is a document equivalent to title for land and, similarly, it can be used to borrow money and buying of inputs,” he said on the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation programme dubbed Sunday Interview.

Mr Mwale said currently, crops which can be deposited with ZAMACE are maize, soya beans, wheat, sunflower and sorghum.

“We will soon finalise the deposit of cowpeas and legumes,” he said.

Mr Mwale also said ZAMACE does not restrict farmers to come with a broker to participate but anyone can take part, either through a cooperative, individually, small and medium trader, as long as they are registered.

He said the exchange is also offering guidance and orientation skills to interested parties.

Mr Mwale said due to clear policy announcement in the agriculture sector by Government, registered warehouse space has increased from 425,000 tonnes to 750,000 tonnes and farmers from across the country will be engaged on how to benefit from the platform.

Recently, Government allowed exports of maize and has opened the market to allow factors of demand and supply to determine the price.

Unpatriotic Zambians are using international media platforms to discredit Zambia -Information Minister

MINISTER of Information and Broadcasting Services Kampamba Mulenga
MINISTER of Information and Broadcasting Services Kampamba Mulenga
MINISTER of Information and Broadcasting Services Kampamba Mulenga (right) is saddened by alarming levels of unpatriotism among some Zambians who are using international media platforms to discredit the country.

Ms Mulenga, who is chief government spokesperson, urged both the private and public media to help counter fabricated stories on international media platforms to protect the image of the country.

She was speaking in Lusaka yesterday when she toured 5FM radio station.

“It is scary how some Zambians discredit the image of the country through international media,” Ms Mulenga said.

She said the private media is free to write stories that may not be in favour of Government but should do so in a professional, factual and ethical manner.

Ms Mulenga said the private media has a duty to provide checks and balances on the Government but that it should do so with civility.

She said her office will in the next one and a half months hold a media indaba aimed at further enhancing the relationship between journalists and the Government.

And Ms Mulenga urged the media in Lusaka to emulate the high levels of coordination and unity among journalists under the Livingstone Press Club.

And 5fm radio director Joe Phiri told the minister that some government departments take too long to pay for the services they receive from the radio station.

In response, Ms Mulenga said the upcoming media indaba will be the best platform to table the challenges and possible solutions that private media houses are facing.

And speaking when she toured One Love radio station, the minister commended the station for embarking on programmes aimed at improving access to information on the love of God.

Radio manager Kaluwa Tembo said the station is distributing solar-powered radio cassettes in rural parts of the country. The radio cassettes have in-build audio bibles in vernacular.

“We want to give out these radio cassettes countrywide but our transmission coverage is limited,” Ms Tembo said.

Lusaka City to be zoned into municipalities next year

23

Vincent Mwale Sports Minister at Nkana Golf Club
Vincent Mwale
GOVERNMENT will soon issue a statutory instrument to outline the zoning of Lusaka city into municipalities by January 1 next year, Minister of Local Government Vincent Mwale has said.

Mr Mwale said in an interview that the move is aimed at improving service delivery to residents of the capital city.

He said Lusaka has grown tremendously and has become too big to be centrally managed by the council.

“We want anything to do with Matero to be done right in Matero, that to do with Chilenje to be done right in Chilenje. This is way, we will take services and development closer to the residents,” Mr Mwale said.

The minister said the zoning of the capital city is part of the decentralisation programme Government is implementing.

He said the Lusaka City Council is usually overwhelmed with service provision to people in various parts of the city because it is centrally located.

Some of the services the local authority offers include dog vaccination, solid waste management and city planning.

THE Patriotic Front (PF) says it will crack a whip on all divisive elements that will be found undermining its leadership.

Deputy spokesperson Frank Bwalya says people who engage in activities aimed at undermining the ruling party and its leadership will be dealt with accordingly.

Mr Bwalya says the party will not tolerate indiscipline by any member regardless of their position.

He said this when he featured on Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation live radio programme dubbed ‘The platform’ on Tuesday.

Mr Bwalya said former Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services Chishimba Kambwili and former Copperbelt Minister Mwenya Musenge were served with several warnings before being expelled.

“PF is not the first party in the world to discipline its members and people should stop politicising the decision,” he said.

Mr Bwalya said PF members who are claiming to have been unfairly treated should provide evidence.

He said some people tried to cause infighting in the party but failed because the central committee is equal to the task of ensuring that members remain united.

Mr Bwalya also said PF will continue with its equal distribution of development to different parts of the county.

He said President Lungu’s desire is to give all Zambians a fair share of development, regardless of their location or party affiliation.

“President Lungu is a President for all Zambians and he remains committed to ensuring that Zambians receive development equally,” Mr Bwalya said.

The PF central committee recently expelled Mr Kambwili and Mr Musenge from the party for alleged gross misconduct and bringing the name of the party into ridicule.

Massive infrastructural development projects have made President Lungu more popular-Lusambo

Copperbelt Province Minister, Bowman Lusambo (right) accompanied by Senior Chief Chiwala (in black cap) talks to stakeholders and investors upon flagging off the rehabilitaion of the Chiwala road
COPPERBELT Minister Bowman Lusambo says President Lungu has become more popular in the province following the massive infrastructural development projects being undertaken.

Mr Lusambo says developmental projects such as the construction of international airport, township roads and the installation of Kafulafuta water projects have earned President Lungu accolades from the residents in the province.

He was speaking when he featured on Radio Sun FM’s Breakfast Show in Ndola yesterday.

“Copperbelt Province is positioning itself to contribute significantly to the growth of the country’s economy. The future looks bright for the province as evidenced by the promotion of agriculture, manufacturing and mining sectors,” he said.

He assured all the 10 districts on the Copperbelt that they will benefit from the projects that President Lungu has continued initiating aimed at improving the socio-economic welfare of citizens.

Mr Lusambo said President Lungu wants to transform the province into an industrial zone.

He said the province is politically and economically stable and that the Patriotic Front (PF) provincial leadership is working as a team to protect and mobilise the ruling party.

Meanwhile, Chifubu member of Parliament (MP) Frank Ng’ambi has urged residents in his constituency to support impeding plans for a US$6 million FM’s shopping mall to be constructed by a named South African company.

Speaking on FM’s Between the Cover radio programme yesterday, Mr Ng’ambi said the project is already in the pipeline and investors are happy with the site and are only waiting for authorisation from the Ministry of Local Government.

“When Shoprite comes to the area, we expect more people to be employed and traders to have more business opportunities. I am surprised that people having grocery shops seem to be resisting that the chain stores will get their business,” he said.

President Lungu expected in Northern Province for a two day working visit

3

PRESIDENT Lungu is next week expected in Northern Province for a two-day working visit, one week after a tour of Luapula Province where he launched a provincial investment exhibition and other development projects.

Provincial minister Brian Mundubile said in an interview yesterday that President Lungu will launch the Tullow Oil Exploration project in Kasama on Friday before gracing the Ukusefya pa Ng’wena traditional ceremony in Mungwi on Saturday.
