Copperbelt Minister Bowman Lusambo has advised youths in Zambia to be innovative and take advantage of various economic empowerment programmes formulated by Government.

Mr. Lusambo who is also Kabushi Member of Parliament said Government through the Ministries of Youth, Sport and Child Development and Commerce, Trade and Industry has a number of youth targeted economic empowerment programmes.

He said as part of its economic diversification programme away from copper dependence, the Zambian government is now promoting investments in agriculture.

Mr. Lusambo said youths should now shift their attention to venturing into agriculture than depending on getting white collar jobs.

The Copperbelt Provincial Minister was speaking to Journalists in Ndola shortly after officiating at a wreath laying ceremony at the Cenotaph to commemorate Youth Day.

“My appeal is to the youths of this great country to embrace agriculture. His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu is focusing on diversifying this economy and young people should be driving that agenda,” Mr. Lusambo said.

He added, “Youths including Graduates should change the notion that agriculture is for retirees. We are promoting agriculture production even for young people because it a well-paying sector and can be a good foreign exchange earner if well harnessed.”

“The theme for this year’s Youth Day celebrations is Unity and Innovation for a Smart Zambia. My message to the youths of Zambia and particularly for those on the Copperbelt is that the time to seize the moment has come. Innovate and be part of the solution that Zambia requires,” he said.

Mr. Lusambo also appealed to the youths of Zambia to support President Lungu’s administration saying he is the only leader in the history of Zambia that has demonstrated his true love for the youths.

He said President Lungu has appointed youths into key portfolios in his administration which is a clear demonstration of his support towards youth development.

“Since 1964, this country has never had a leader like President Lungu who has appointed a lot of youths into key positions. Myself, I am a true example of President Lungu’s faith in young people. He appointed me to be in charge of a very strategic Province and he has always supported me,” he said.

“President Lungu fully understands that there is no country on this earth that can attain social and economic development when it leaves behind its youth. So the youths of Zambia should rally behind President Lungu administration in order to realise their full potential.”

Media crackdown in Zambia is unacceptable-NUMSA

39

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) says South Africa cannot remain silent over the media crackdown happening in Zambia.

NUMSA Spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi said South African’s voices should shout loud and clear over the situation in Zambia.
Ms. Hlubi said the situation in Zambia is unacceptable.

“During the darkest days of apartheid, Zambians played a critical role in providing a home base for South Africans fleeing oppression. The Zambian government of that time risked major repercussions from the diabolical South African regime. It hosted the leadership of the ANC, and the SACP as well as other liberation movements. It provided accommodation, military training and other crucial support. The people of Zambia opened their homes and hearts to South Africans in peril,” she said.

She added, “It is because of this history that the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) cannot ignore the situation facing media workers in that country. As a trade union we will not be silent when basic democratic principles are being violated, and workers are suffering.”

Ms. Hlubi who is also a Journalist said |as journalists and media workers in this country we have a duty to express solidarity with our comrades in Zambia and on the rest of the continent.”

“If we were unfortunate enough to find ourselves in the same position, who would speak for us? Who would rise to our defence? We have no choice. We must speak out on behalf of the Zambian people. If we truly believe in democratic values, we must be uncompromising in our condemnation of such heinous acts.”

Shoprite Zambia and Food Lovers Market protest Government ban on importation of fruits and vegetables

99

Shoprite Zambia and Food Lovers Market, the South African chain stores, have protested the move taken by the Government banning the importation of some fruits and vegetables and are seeking lifting of the ban.

Food Lovers Market has cited inconsistency in supply and compromised quality of produce by local farmers as some of the reasons it is agitated over the ban.

Food Lovers Market Levy Mall Junction manager Obrian Mangimela lamented the tendency by local farmers to supply once and thereafter go to ‘dance’.

“The challenge we have with local farmers is, today they supply us and tomorrow they gone to ‘dance’. As we speak, the shelf for eggs is empty because our local suppliers have not delivered. If as a supermarket we are inconsistent in stocking certain products, we risk losing customers,” he said.

Mr Mangimela has appealed to Government to pressurise local farmers to supply consistently good quality products.

Shoprite Zambia general manager Charles Bota said he would only comment if he was told who had availed the author the information on the matter.

Small-Scale Farmers Union president Frank Kayula said the restriction is good and long overdue.

Dr Kayula said the association had been advocating a ban to give preference to local farmers to supply the produce.

“In fact, we should have a Statutory Instrument (SI) that will give even up to 30 percent preference for local produce,” Dr Kayula said.

He has proposed that the Zambia Bureau of Standard (ZABS) develops a scale of standards that local farmers should meet in the production and distribution of various produce.

Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) executive secretary Samuel Simutanda welcomed the move and called for a co-ordinated system to enable farmers to supply produce consistently.

Government banned the importation of some fruits and vegetables to promote production and grow the market for local farmers.

Ministry of Agriculture permanent secretary Julius Shawa named the banned agricultural produce as tomatoes, onions, carrots, mangoes, potatoes, pineapples, lemons and watermelons.

Mr Shawa said in an exclusive interview with the Zambia Daily Mail that the ban follows numerous concerns by local farmers that the imported produce had a negative impact on their business.

“Just recently, we received complaints from farmers that some tomatoes from neighbouring Tanzania were being imported cheaply, hence under-cutting our farmers.

“Our concern as a ministry is that lets us encourage the sourcing and supply of these products within the country, so we have imposed an administrative restriction for now,” Mr Shawa.

He said the country has capacity to produce and constantly supply fruits and vegetables to satisfy local demand.

Mr Shawa added that most farmers in Chibombo, Chisamba and Mkushi, among other areas, are growing most of the fruits and vegetables that some foreign supermarkets are importing.

He said Government wants to promote local production and supply of agriculture produce to fill the shelves.

“The chain stores are being lazy to source from the local market. Those products that we have restricted are readily available locally,” he said.

The permanent secretary has challenged local farmers to take up the challenge by producing more and ensuring a constant supply of the agriculture produce in the chain stores.

“We are telling our farmers, ‘here is the market’. They should produce and supply all the requisites. We want to make our own farmers rich,” he said.

Mr Shawa has challenged Shoprite and Food Lovers Market to demonstrate the inability of local farmers to supply the produce whose importation has been banned.

“We have agreed as a ministry and together with our counterparts at Commerce to meet them to listen to their concerns.
“The two supermarkets need to demonstrate to us that the products are unavailable or they are inadequate locally,” he said.

Unbeaten Zambia triumph to lift U20 AFCON title

31

Zambia are the 2017 Under-20 AFCON champions after downing Senegal 2-0 in the final at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka.

Beston ‘Quicksilver’ Chambeshi’s side lifted the title with a one hundred percent record after winning all their four games and are also unbeaten 11 successive official matches since the team was constituted last August.

Goals from Patson Daka and Edward Chilufya added the Under-20 title to Zambia’s honours roll after the senior teams 2012 Africa Cup triumph in Gabon.

Daka put Zambia ahead in the 17th minute after benefitting from some poor goalkeeping my Lamine Sarr who spilt the ball into the striker’s path and the striker ruthlessly finished it off with ice cold precession.

Sarr was again at fault for the second goal in the 33rd minute after some poor communication with his defender when he rushed out of his area.

The goal was credited to Chilufya although replays show Sarr and the defender nearest to him may have conceded an own-goal.

Shenanigans then manifested just before the hour mark when African football’s darkest side stole the spotlight briefly when Ibrahima Niane and his colleagues seemingly planted juju in the Zambia goal.

Referee Thierry Nkurunziza defused the situation and also booked Ibrahima Ndiaye for his role at the scene of the crime but Zambia were in cruise control heading into the last 30 minutes despite Senegal push for a comeback.

Meanwhile, Zambia now become the 4th host country to win the Under-20 title after Egypt in 1991, Morocco in 1997 and Ghana in 1999.

Chambeshi and his charges now take a month off before regrouping in April ahead of their trip to Suwon for the 2017 FIFA U20 world Cup that South Korea will host from May 20 to June 11.

The draws will be made on May 15.

The President is extremely happy at the consistent and impressive performance that the young Chipolopolo have exhibited since the tournament commenced.

The First Lady of the Republic of Zambia Mrs Esther Lungu arrived in New York on Saturday, and expressed optimism that her high-profile engagements at the Sixty-First session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW61) will help Zambia mobilise resources for women and girls’ empowerment.

Mrs. Lungu – who is a strong advocate for women empowerment, safe motherhood, protection of the girl child, promotion of rights for persons with disabilities and fight against Gender Based Violence (GBV) – was speaking to Zambian journalists covering the Commission on the Status of Women that will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 13 to 24 March 2017.

“Zambia’s participation at the 61st Session of the Commission on the Status of Women is of great importance in the sense that I take it to be an exchange programme of ideas springing from the international community where we shall have the involvement and participation of high profile personalities and people from countries from around the world,” Mrs. Lungu said.

She said CSW was significant to Zambia and that the country would utlise the platform to highlight the milestones it has achieved in the protection and promotion of the welfare of women.

“Our cooperating partners would also want to hear the challenges that we are facing in our quest to provide protection and promotion of our women and children’s welfare,” Mrs Lungu said. “As we are here, me as First Lady I should lobby and mobilise resources from our cooperating partners including the UN agencies that are already in good books with us, but upon receiving our report on how much we have done, it should encourage them to do much more.”

She said the Esther Lungu Foundation Trust act as one of the vehicles for the line ministries to use in delivering services to the people of Zambia, especially the less privileged.

“We want to make sure that our girl children receive empowerment – education, good health – and our women also need economic empowerment because they are the people who have a lot of responsibilities in these households,” said Mrs. Lungu. “Empowering women means the children will grow up in decent environment, they will receive the education that they need and in the end they will be independent citizens who are going to contribute towards the economic growth of our country.”

The First Lady will participate in the largest annual women’s gathering, which draws hundreds of participants from Government Ministers and officials, First Ladies, princesses, policy makers and implementers, heads of UN agencies and other international organizations, donor agencies, civil society organizations, corporate executives, women’s movement, celebrities, human rights activists and other stakeholders from across the world.

Gender Minister Honourable Victoria Kalima, MP for Kasenengwe, will lead the Zambian delegation to the Sixty-First session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

The priority theme for CSW61 is “Women’s economic empowerment in the changing world of work” and the Review theme is “Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls (agreed conclusions of the fifty-eighth session) while emerging issue and focus area will be “the empowerment of indigenous women”.

Zambia has won international respect for its advocacy and implementation of policies and programmes that protect and promote the wellbeing of women and girls.

“A TENDER I supposedly cancelled against Roan Patriotic Front (PF) member of Parliament Chishimba Kambwili is the cause of bad blood and altercation in Parliament on Friday,” Presidential Affairs Minister Freedom Sikazwe has revealed.

The grudge, he said, was the reason why Mr. Kambwili had taken every opportunity to attack and insult him publicly.

“I have now decided to write to the secretary general David Mwila to complain about his behavour towards me,” Mr. Sikazwe said.

In an interview with the Sunday Nation, Mr. Sikazwe confessed that there was actually a big problem between him and Mr. Kambwili following accusations of cancelling a contract.

“I received a text message from Kambwili accusing me of cancelling his contract,” Mr. Sikazwe has revealed.

And when asked whether it was true, Mr. Sikazwe denied cancelling Mr. Kambwili contract.

Mr. Sikazwe, who is Mpulungu Patriotic Front member of Parliament, said he was not aware of the contract which his Roan counterpart was accusing him of cancelling.

Mr. Sikazwe said he would be officially writing the secretariat to complain over the way Mr. Kambwili has been treating him.

“I will be writing to the secretary general Davis Mwila to complain about his behavour toward me.

“He has to tell the secretariat what wrong I have done to him because it is like I am becoming an injury to him where he thinks maybe I am against him to the extent that whatever I do he is against it,” he said.

Mr. Sikazwe said whatever words Mr. Kambwili used on him in Parliament on Friday was as a result of anger that his contract was cancelled.

“That outburst by Kambwili in Parliament on me is as a result of the same contract which he has been accusing me of cancelling but I have never cancelled his contract and do not know it,” Mr. Sikazwe said.

On Friday, there was an altercation between Mr. Kambwili and Mr. Sikazwe.

Mr. Kambwili, dismissed Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, branded Mr. Sikazwe a thief, saying he was stupid and threatened to sort him out.

The incident happened when Mr. Kambwili wanted to find out from Vice President Inonge Wina what had happened to the PF government’s pro-poor policy of leaving casual jobs to Zambians and not the Chinese nationals.

The Roan MP was annoyed when Mr. Sikazwe interjected and appeared to suggest that Mr. Kambwili was anti-Government.

Mr. Kambwili retorted angrily, referring to the minister as “kabolala iwe”, meaning ‘‘you are a thief’’.

Mr. Kambwili told Mr. Sikazwe that the PF did not belong to his father and that he would suffer after he leaves Government.

Today’s Message: It’s About the Way You Finish

5

Today’s Scripture

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

(2 Timothy 4:7, KJV)

It’s About the Way You Finish

So often, when people make mistakes, they get down on themselves and think, “If only…” “I should have…” “What if…?” It’s easy to feel like you’ve missed the best plan for your life. That’s when people get discouraged and stop pursuing their God-given dreams. But understand today, just because you’ve made a mistake or failed in some way doesn’t cancel God’s plan. God never disqualifies you. He never says, “Go sit on the sidelines. You’ve blown it too many times. You’ve got too many weaknesses.” No, God always gives you another chance!

Some of the great people in the Bible made very poor choices. The apostle Paul started off as a murderer, yet his destiny was bigger than his mistakes. He ended up becoming a great leader and writing over half of the New Testament.

What am I saying? Our mistakes, our failures, our poor choices don’t have to keep us from our God-given destiny. With God, it’s not about the way you start in life, it’s about the way you finish. Receive His grace today and embrace the bright future He has in store for you!

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for Your grace and mercy to me. I trust that my days are ordered of You. I ask that You strengthen and empower me to fulfill Your call on my life. I love You and bless You today in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

THE Football Association of Zambia and First National Bank (FNB) Zambia have unveiled a three-year K1.5 million sponsorship deal for the Zambia U-20 Men’s National Football Team to run from 2017 to 2019.

Speaking at the Taj Pamodzi Hotel, FNB Chief Financial Officer Ackim Chalwe said the sponsorship deal was a long term commitment by the bank toward the support of the game of football in Zambia.

Chalwe revealed that the negotiations that had gone on for over five months had been catalyzed by the success of the U-20 at the on-going continental youth tournament being hosted in Zambia.

”We are proud to formally announce the official sponsorship of the U-20 team. The sponsorship is worth K1.5 million (USD 150,000.00) over a three year period,” Chalwe said.

“FNB being long term partners and friends of football, our sponsorship is guaranteed for three years and is not in any way tied to the results of any matches the team plays,” he said.

FNB Zambia Limited has 21 branches countrywide and over 60 automated teller machine (ATM) network, as well as FNB Zambia Online and Cellphone Banking ensuring that customers have access to their accounts around the clock.

And FAZ president Andrew Kamanga said the sponsorship to the U-20 will be fitted in the association’s blue print for promoting youth football.

The FAZ president said the sponsorship for the U-20 will help the team prepare for the FIFA World Cup in Korea but most importantly be spread across the country beyond the forthcoming tournament.

He said that the right investment in talent could unearth talents beyond Lusaka and the Copperbelt as seen by the rise of Edward Chilufya from Kasama’s Mpande Youth Academy.

“This money will help us take football development across the country. Like you know, one of the stars of this U-20 national team, Edward Chilufya, is from Kasama,” said the FAZ Chief.

Chilufya scored the goal which sent Zambia into the final of the 2017 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations where they will face Senegal at the National Heroes on Sunday, March 12.

Zanaco hold Young Africans to raise group stage hopes

6

Zanaco collected a valuable away goal in Tanzania on Saturday in their 2017 CAF Champions League clash against George Lwandamina’s Young Africans.

The 2016 FAZ Super Division champions rallied from one-down in the first half to hold Young Africans 1-1 in Dar-es-Salaam.

Simon Msvua put Young Africans ahead in the 40th minute.

Ghana-born striker Kwame Attram equalized for Zanaco in the 77th minute to ensure they take a precious goal for the return leg at Nkoloma Stadium on March 18.

A home draw for Zanaco next weekend should be enough to see them through to the Champions League group stage.

Defeat for Lwandamina will see Young Africans relegated to the CAF Confederation Cup where the potential last 36 draw with his former club Zesco United lies in store.
