Kabushi PF Parliamentary Candidate Bowman Lusambo has been summoned by the Ndola District Elections Conflict Management Committee after the UPND complained over what it says are provocative campaign messages.

The UPND in the District has written to the Ndola District Elections Conflict Management Committee complaining over Mr Lusambo’s campaigns messages targeted at its leader Hakainde Hichilema.
The party says Mr Lusambo is behind the three mock coffins that were draped in UPND chitenges that have been going round the district.

The party also claims that Mr Lusambo has been distributing posters with the words R.I.P HH which it says is provocative.

And Ndola District Elections Conflict Management Committee Chairman Roy Kuseka has confirmed that Mr Lusambo has been summoned to appear before the Committee at 14:30 Hours today.

Mr Kuseka said the Committee wants to establish some facts behind the reports regarding the nature of campaigns that Mr Lusambo and his team are engaging in.

According to the Electoral Process Act No. 35 2016, one of the mandates of the Electoral Commission of Zambia is to manage electoral conflicts and resolve disputes.

These committees are composed of a Chairperson appointed by the Commission; a Vice Chairperson; One representative from each registered political party; representatives of civil society organizations and representatives of such Government ministries and institutions as determined by the Commission, such as the Zambia Police, Anti-Corruption Commission and the Drug Enforcement Commission; and the secretariat.

The National and District Conflict Management Committees have powers to mediate electoral conflicts, advise the conflicting party in an election conflict, report the matter to the police for further action where a crime is committed during elections and recommend the revocation of accreditation of any monitor or observer to the Commission.

The Committee does not however have judicial powers or powers to disqualify the candidature of any person participating in the elections.

Meanwhile UPND Cadres also displayed a mock coffin of PF President Edgar Lungu at a rally address by UPND President Hakainde Hichilema.

Chief Kasoma Lunga of the Ushi speaking people of Lunga district of Luapula Province has praised President Edgar Lungu for the on-going developmental projects in the district.

Chief Kasoma Lunga says President Lungu has demonstrated a great humanitarian zeal of ensuring that Lunga attains its full district status after being declared a district by late President, Micheal Sata, few years ago.

The traditional leader said the on-going construction of social infrastructures, such as schools, hospital, health posts and houses shows government’s commitment of improving the welfare of the people of Lunga.

Chief Kasoma Lunga said this at his palace when Rural Electrification Authority (REA) Chief Executive Officer, Geoffrey Musonda, paid a courtesy call on him.

The traditional leader also praised government through REA for choosing Lunga district as the area to implement the K3.3 Million Sola Mini Grid Project.

He said once completed the project will be of great economic value not only to the people of Lunga but the surrounding areas.

And REA Chief Executive Officer, Geoffrey Musonda, said the authority is committed to ensuring that people in Lunga district have access to electricity.

Mr Musonda said improving people’s access to electricity will help to accelerate other social needs of the communities, such as health and education among others.

Meanwhile, Chief Kasoma Lunga said he is ready to offer land for the construction of facilities aimed at improving the lives of the people of Lunga district.

The Ushi chief said he has already demonstrated this by offering land for the construction of the new district administration block and the Solar Mini Grid project among others.

Construction of Lunga solar mini grid halted

The contractor constructing physical structures for the K3.3 Million Solar Mini Grid Project in Lunga district of Luapula Province has been ordered to discontinue with the works for alleged use of substandard blocks.

Rural Electrification Authority (REA) Chief Executive Officer, Geoffrey Musonda, ordered Aston Investments Limited to discontinue with the works until a team of engineers urgently assesses the quality of the materials.

Mr Musonda expressed concern that the materials being used will not be able to withstand or accommodate the high value materials for the solar project.

He issued the directives yesterday in Lunga district shortly after touring the construction project.

Musonda, however, noted some of the challenges the contractor may be facing in transporting building materials to Lunga district.

Meanwhile, Aston Investments Limited Northern Region Manager Tommy Cau obliged to Mr Musonda’s directive.

Among the structures being constructed are the power house, administration block, three staff houses and the solar power plant yard.

It sad and sickening that Dr Mumba wants to use deceit and lies to advance his interest-Nakacinda

MMD National Secretary Rapheal Nakacinda has called on Zambians and party members not to allow what he termed as a “master deceiver” to deceive them as former Party President Nevers Mumba has not been restored as Party President.

Reacting to a statement by the Nevers Mumba camp who insinuated that the embattled former leader has been restored by the Supreme Court, Mr Nakacinda who was elected as Party National Secretary at the convention last May said it was sad and sickening to see Dr Mumba and his stooges continue to use deceit and lies in their quest to advance their political interest and remain relevant to the UPND.

Mr Nakacinda said it is trying to present falsehoods to the public as the only thing the Supreme Court has done is to refer the matter back to the High Court as opposed to his claims that he has been restored as President of the MMD.

“It is actually sad and sickening to see Dr Mumba and his stooges continue to use deceit and lies to try and advance their political interest in their quest to remain relevant to the UPND that they have joined under the disguise that they are taking MMD there.

“I think it is water under the bridge and it is public knowledge that a democratic process known of MMD was conducted in form of a convention of which Dr Mumba was given an opportunity to participate but he refused which is his Democratic right.

“Dr Mumba had thrown before our courts of law numerous cases attempting to stop the convention, now to try and challenge the holding of the convention and the result there of. He has lost all of them including the appeal which he is trying to manipulate to present a falsehood that he has been restored into office. The only thing the Supreme Court has done is to refer the matter back to the High Court and our view is that Dr Mumba, because of being litigious, is being given more opportunities to express his grievances but he is not the only who has the right to be heard before our Courts,” Mr Nakacinda said.

Mr Nakacinda also said Dr Mumba has no powers to change what has been a practice of holding conventions every 5 years in the party and that the judiciary can not be used to advance an individual’s interest.

“We have material facts that have proved not only by way of arguments presented before Court but by way of precedence by practice that is known of MMD in holding of conventions every 5 years and Dr Mumba as an individual cannot change that fact and neither is the judiciary going to be used to advance an individual’s interest.

“As far as we are concerned it’s all deceit. It is all lies. Manipulating the decision or guidance of the Court for personal interest and we want to urge all well meaning Zambians and members of the party not to allow the master deceiver to deceive you,” he said.

Al Ahly fire warning shot at Zesco United

6

Al Ahly on Wednesday night overturned the order in Group A after ending Wydad Casablanca’s 15 year old unbeaten home record in continental action to give their hosts in August’s Zesco United something to ponder about.

The record 8-time African champions beat Group A leaders Wydad 1-0 away in Rabat to collect their first win in the league phase of this years competition.

Rami Rabia headed in the games lone goal in the 46th minute to send ripples in Group A.

Wydad were unbeaten at home in continental cup action action since 2003 where they lost 1-0 to Etoile du Sahel in the defunct CAF Cup Winners Cup semifinals to see the Tunisians advance 3-0 on aggregate.

With that result, Al Ahly leave the basement of Group A for the first time to relegate ASEC Mimosa of Cote d’Ivoire from 3rd to bottom of the log tied on 4 points.

Al Ahly now hosts Zesco on August 12 in a make-or-break, penultimate Group A match at home in Egypt.

United Party for National Development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema has people to vote for UPND for jobs creation and lower food prices.

In A statement released to the media, the UPND leader said that if people vote for President Lungu, they voting for five more years of empty promises and visionless government.

Below is the full statement

UPND Continue To Take North Western By Storm

Another great day on the campaign trail here in North Western Province, moving from Zambezi East, to Mfumbwe and then on to Kabompo.

As we continue our tours we see the countless ways in which God has blessed us as a nation.

We have many of the ingredients for a productive and thriving community, including natural resources, from gemstones to copper, fertile land on which we can grow a range of crops, and hard working people.

Yet our people here are struggling. They are struggling to afford three meals a deal, struggling to find work and struggling to send their children to school.

What is missing for our people to be in this situation in a land of plenty and in a region with so much natural wealth? The answer is good quality leadership.

The opportunities here are waiting for us. From supporting local businesses to supply goods and services to the mines, to adding value by processing crops already grown in the region, such as the pineapples we are enjoying from Mwinilunga.

On 11th August you can vote UPND to grasp these opportunities, create jobs and lower food prices, or you can choose Lungu and five more years of empty promises and visionless government.

ZEIC urges Zambians to protect their vote and not sell it

Press statement by ZEIC

Your Vote is your Power, don’t sell it…

Lusaka, 27 July 2016:

The Zambia Elections Information Centre (ZEIC) is urging all citizens to value and protect the power of their vote by exercising their voting right on 11th August 2016.

With exactly two weeks before the polls, and as campaigns are going on, we encourage citizens to remember that voting is one of the single most powerful ways in which they participate in the governance of the country, by choosing their own leaders. No one has a right to take this power from them, through whatever means.

The ZEIC has received concerns from citizens participating in ZEIC platforms on SMS, email and social media that in some contexts, politicians are enticing voters with bribes to influence their decision-making. This kind of electoral corruption is not good for democracy and we encourage voters to resist and report to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), such kind of malpractices.

Importantly, we wish to encourage voters to come out in numbers and vote to ensure that they usher in leaders of their choice. Let us keep our tempers down, let us avoid violence and let us avoid any actions that may make the final results not to be fair and credible. If you decide to sell the power of your vote, you will not be helping anyone, even yourself because elections do not come everyday.

If you have questions and concerns, or if you would like to share reports on anything that you think may affect the credibility of next month’s elections, do not hesitate to report to the ZEIC platform by sending an SMS to 2323, and the people at the ZEIC situation room will get back to you.

To the politicians we say: do not manipulate citizens to vote in a certain way. To the citizens we say: your vote is your power and it is your right, do not sell it.

NGOCC urges political parties to educate their supporters on the referendum and Bill of Rights

THE Non-Governmental Organisation’s Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has urged political parties to educate their supporters on the referendum and Bill of Rights instead of just telling them to vote No or YES.

All citizens who have the National Registration Cards will be voting for the Referendum on August 11 this year.

The gazetted Referendum question is: Do you agree to the amendment to the Constitution to enhance the Bill of Rights contained in Part III of the Constitution of Zambia and to repeal and replace Article 79 of the Constitution of Zambia?

NGOCC Executive Director Engwase Mwale said there was need for political parties to sensitise citizens on the Referendum and Bill of Rights so that they make understand the documents and make informed decisions as they vote.

Ms Mwale noted that most political parties were currently either telling the electorates to vote for YES or No instead of sensitising them on the process of the referendum and the Bill of Rights.

She was speaking in Livingstone yesterday at Warm Harbour Hotel during a community sensitisation on the referendum and Bill of Rights.

NGOCC has embarked on community campaigns on the referendum and Bill of Rights in various parts of the country.

“We have noted that political parties are telling their electorates to either vote YES or No to the referendum question.

“This is not a political issue but a national issue and hence political parties should educate their members on the referendum process and Article 70 of the Constitution so that they make informed decisions,” she said.

Ms Mwale said the referendum and the Bill of Rights were progressive document but the sensitisation part was not adequate and left to few stakeholders.

She said there were technical issues which needed to be explained to citizens in both urban and rural areas before voting on the referendum.

A Livingstone-based community leader, Susiku Mwanangombe, said a Yes Vote to the referendum Question and the Bill of Rights would enable many vulnerable children to access education and enjoy other right.

Ms Mwanangombe, who is the coordinator for the Tutalike Life Begins organisation for disadvantaged children and old people in Ngwenya Township, however noted that the atmosphere in which the referendum vote would be conducted was not conducive to achieve its intended purpose.

Boxing promoter Anthony Mwamba has saluted the Samsung Young Boxing initiative

The Samsung Youth Boxing is part of the seasonal junior sports programme at the Olympic Youth development Centre that began in 2011 with an initial US$240,000 deal with South Korean electronics giant Samsung that also covers Judo, Table Tennis, Badminton and Handball.

Mwamba, who reached welterweight division quarterfinals at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, said the initiative was a boost for junior boxing in the Midlands Amateur Boxing Association (MABA) zone.

“My comment over this tournament, is that it is encouraging to see that Samsung is sponsoring this tournament in MABA.They are building amateur boxers,” Mwamba said.

“Actually we need this tournament nearly every weekend if we can produce boxers who will represent the nation at Olympic games.

“It is more encouraging that boxers are coming up every year.

“At Exodus, we have 36 boxers, so we need them and encourage them to train hard and also encourage the trainers to spend more time with the boxers to train them not just to bring boxers to come and be part of the tournament.”

ZESCO United Football Club
ZESCO United Football Club
Zesco United snatched a late but critical point away at ASEC Mimosa in Cote d’Ivoire on Wednesday to keep alive their 2016 CAF Champions League semifinal hopes.

Zesco rallied to draw 1-1 in Abidjan to remain second and pick up their first away point in Group A after losing 2-0 in Morocco against leaders Wydad Casablanca on June 29 in Rabat.

ASEC put Zesco under pressure in the opening ten minutes of of the match but goalkeeper Jacob Banda made some critical saves to ensure the hosts did not avenge the 3-1 loss they suffered in Ndola on July 16.

However, Banda was punished in the 75th minute when Nabi Kone beat the on-rushing Zesco goalkeeper to the ball to open scores off a Yannick Zakri free kick.

But AESC’s lead lasted just four minutes when Jackson Mwanza fired in the equalizer in the midst of a scrum in the box after AESC defenders failed to deal with Cletus Chama’s free kick.

Zesco stay second on 7 points, three more than ASEC after four games played heading into the penultimate round of matches in August.

Leaders Wydad (7 points) and bottom placed Al Ahly (1 point) meet in a late kickoff on Wednesday in Morocco to decided the points status in Group A after round four.

Zesco must now draw away at Al Ahly on August 12 and hope Wydad beat ASEC two days later in Rabat to ensure they become the first Zambian club to reach the CAF Champions League semifinals.
