FDD President Edith Nawakwi
FORUM for Democracy and Development (FDD) President Edith Nawakwi says that this year’s election should not be based on how rich some candidates are but about ideas and how leaders will help improve people’s living standards.
Speaking when she featured on Sun FM radio in Ndola on Thursday, Ms Nawakwi said there were some candidates that felt they had already won the general elections, adding that pulling large crowds at rallies was not a guarantee of victory.
She further appealed to other political players to prepare their members for the outcome of the elections.
“In a time like this when we are canvassing for votes everyone has a catch phrase and when the people give them the mandate they go underground saying that’s not what we promised you. Others are saying we will fix it, we will fix the economy but there is no specific discussion for what can be done for our brothers and sisters.
“This election should be about ideas and not who is mighty with money and violent. If crowds were everything, late Anderson Mazoka would have won when he stood. There are those of us in the race who feel they have won the race and I want to remind them of what happened in 2008 when late President Sata declared that he had won and would not accept defeat, violence erupted in Marapodi township.
“How you prepare your people for the outcome is important and I get concerned with some of our leaders who have made pronouncements that they will not accept the results,” she said.
Ms Nawakwi, who was accompanied by People’s Party president Mike Mulongoti, said it was wrong for some parties to assume that they had won elections and others must accept that.
She further explained that the misconception that she was attacking the United Party for National Development (UPND) was incorrect but stated that the party had been violent towards the FDD.
“I have repeatedly said that UPND has been very violent towards FDD, I have nothing against individuals but as a mother who knows the pain of giving birth, I have everything against someone who wants to shed blood.
“We cannot run a campaign based on violence and I don’t want to be a part of post-election violence. I know the pain of having to nurse a child in hospital and you want me to sit back and watch violence,” she said.
She called on political leaders to respect each other because they were all equal and urged people to commit their leaders in God’s hands.
President Edgar Lungu address a Rally at Kapiri Mposhi on Friday Picture by Eddie Mwanaleza/Statehouse
PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has charged that Zambians are not ready to experiment with leadership by voting for the opposition because they are already satisfied with his work.
Mr Lungu said he was a tested leader who had served in various ministerial positions before taking up the presidency where he has also demonstrated his capabilities within a short time.
Speaking when he addressed a public rally in Kapiri Mposhi, Mr Lungu wondered how someone who had never served as a councillor could be aspiring to be president.
“Zambians are not ready to experiment with leadership, I have been on probation, you were trying me and you can’t say I have failed, what you now need to do is to confirm me for five years.
“I have served as deputy minister, minister for Home Affairs, Justice and Defence before being elected president while others have been losing from 2006,” he said.
“I have served as deputy minister, minister for Home Affairs, Justice and Defence before being elected president while others have been losing from 2006,” he said.
Mr Lungu also called on the Patriotic Front members to resist provocation from the opposition UPND to avoid violence as the country draws closer to next month’s elections.
He reiterated that the opposition UPND members had resorted to violent acts because they had realised that the party was losing the August 11 polls.
Earlier, Local Government Minister Stephen Kampyongo said 40 boreholes would be sunk in Kapiri Mposhi to avert water shortages that had been caused by reduced rainfall.
Former vice-president Enoch Kavindele and former Kabwe Central MP Austin Chewe were among the people that addressed the rally.
And traditional leaders in Ngabwe District have told President Edgar Lungu that people in the area are geared to vote for him in the forthcoming general elections.
Meanwhile, the Head of State has assured people in the district that the Patriotic Front (PF) means well for the welfare of every Zambian.
Chiefs Mukubwe and Ngabwe of the Lenje and Lima-Lenje people, respectively, assured President Lungu of a resounding victory in the August 11 polls.
The duo said this yesterday when Mr Lungu, who was in the area for a working visit, called on them.
“Your Excellency, you are the first sitting Head of State to visit us and let me assure you that the people here are with you.
“PF has responded favourably to our call for Ngabwe to be designated as a district and this has led to rapid development,” Chief Mukubwe said.
He said the area had witnessed the development of infrastructure in sectors such as health and housing.
The traditional leader urged the President to ensure that contractors engaged on developmental projects did their work urgently and efficiently.
Chief Mukubwe thanked the President for increasing chiefs and retainers’ allowances as the move will ease the operations of traditional leaders.
He also condemned the political violence witnessed ahead of the elections.
Chief Ngabwe wished the Head of State well ahead of next month’s polls.
In response, President Lungu said the Government would seriously look into the social and economic challenges affecting the area.
“We have vigorous development programmes in all sectors among them health and education and your royal highnesses let me assure you that we are doing everything possible to uplift the living standards of our people in Ngabwe,” the President said.
Mr Lungu, who was accompanied by his campaign manager Samuel Mukupa, deputy Frank Bwalya and party deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri, also toured selected developmental projects.
Among, the facilities visited was the site which will house the new Ngabwe police station and camp.
He also toured the site designated for the new district administration block, council and post office.
After the tour, Mr Lungu urged provincial ministers and permanent secretaries to collaborate with the Ministry of Finance in facilitating timely project completion.
This follows reports of dragging construction projects in some parts of the country on the pretext that Zambian contractors in particular were incompetent.
“Well, we can’t criticise everyone because there are some Zambian contractors who are doing a good job elsewhere. So I urge people responsible for projects; the ministers and permanent secretaries to work closely with the Treasury which deals with a lot of competing needs,” the Head of State said.
Meanwhile, addressing a campaign rally at Mumba Chala Secondary School, the Head of State said the people should vote for leaders who stood for peace.
The President said some politicians did not respect the electorate as they had been found in the possession of offensive weapons while refusing to sign peace accords and attending national prayers.
“Such people do not mean well at all. So, please vote for peace, vote for PF, vote on the boat,” President Lungu told the jubilant crowd. Mr Lungu pledged to complete all developmental projects earmarked for the area as the people of Ngabwe deserved access to quality social services.
“If you want development, vote for PF, vote on the boat. PF will complete all the developmental projects including those left by late president Michael Sata because we do not promise the people lies, we cannot insult your intelligence,” he said.
He urged the people to vote for PF aspiring Lufubu Constituency Member of Parliament Gift Chiyalika and his counterparts contesting for ward and council chairperson positions.

The template of the Referendum ballot paper for the referendum voting in the August 2016 elections.
THE Ministry of Justice has urged citizens to avoid politicising the Referendum as it is an important national document that concerns the law.
All citizens who have the National Registration Cards will be voting for the Referendum on August 11 this year.
The gazetted Referendum question is: Do you agree to the amendment to the Constitution to enhance the Bill of rights contained in Part III of the Constitution of Zambia and to repeal and replace Article 79 of the Constitution of Zambia?
Ministry of Justice Governance department acting director Davis Chikalanga said the Referendum was not a political document but an important national document and hence it should not be politicised.
Mr Chikalanga said a YES vote on the Referendum was not a YES vote to a political party or political candidate as insinuated by some citizens.
He was speaking in Livingstone today when he featured on Musitunya Radio radio alongside other experts from the Ministry to discuss the Referendum subject.
“Citizens should stop polititicising the Referendum because it is not a political document. Citizen should read the Referendum documents instead of being cheated that a YES vote will favour the ruling party,” Mr Chikalanga said.
He said a Yes Vote to the Referendum Question was aimed at enhancing the Bill of Rights and protecting the rights of citizens.
“In an election, you will be voting for political parties or political candidates while you will be voting for an important national issue in a Referendum,” he said.
Mr Chikalanga also dismissed claims that a YES vote to the Referendum would bring about homosexuality in the country.
Some political stakeholders have been telling their supporters not to participate in the referendum process.
They have argued that they would only participate in the referendum if it was conducted as a stand-alone and not alongside the general elections.
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has postponed elections of chairpersons in the newly created districts of Kalumbila and Mushindamo in North-western province to a later date.
Solwezi District Electoral Officer, Venture Kafula, said the postponement is as a result of the formal separation of the two districts from Solwezi district which calls for the two to have chairpersons elected independently.
Mr Kafula, who is also Solwezi Town Clerk, was speaking in Solwezi during a briefing with members of various political parties, civil society and the media organisations.
He said the ECZ will advise when fresh nominations and elections will be held in the two districts.
Mr Kafula called on political players to concentrate on soliciting votes for Presidential, Parliamentary and local government candidates in the two districts.
President Edgar Lungu last year declared Solwezi East Constituency as Mushindamo district while Solwezi West is Kalumbila district.
Tasila’s desire to try and protect her old man from being exposed during a live TV debate with UPND presidential candidate Mr. Hakainde Hichilema is touching indeed. She has clearly recognised he has no capacity to participate in a presidential debate, as he is not exactly known for his coherence or willingness to answer serious questions about his record in office or plans for the future. However, after 18 months in office we hoped he would have warmed up a bit by now.
Anyone who hopes to represent our country and its people should be more than ready for such a debate. So President Lungu please leave your comfy chair for one evening and come and explain to the people who are struggling in the current economic climate why nothing bad that has happened in the past 18 months is your fault and how you intend to turn the situation around.
Tasila, of course you wish to shield your father from what could be an embarrassing situation, but we ask you to kindly let your father come to the debate. Your own desire and readiness to debate is commendable and as there are councillor debates underway on various media outlets we are sure you will find an appropriate forum to demonstrate your skills.
Government has impounded over 200 metric tonnes of maize which were about to be exported to neighbouring countries illegally on goods trains at Chanda Weyaya TAZARA station in Northern Province.
Provincial Permanent Secretary, Hlobotha Nkunika, confirmed the development to ZANIS in Kasama after visiting the scene today.
Mr Nkunika explained that the scam was unearthed after the alert Zambia National Service (ZNS) officers pursued the goods train which was reported to have loaded the grain in question from Kasama’s TAZARA station en-route to Nakonde Border.
The PS said fortunately the vigilant officers managed to intercept the goods train which was carrying the illegal maize and impound the contraband at Chanda Weyaya TAZARA station yesterday.
He said when they opened the wagons they discovered the said number of bags which had neither importation nor exportation permit from relevant authorities.
The PS has since called on the security wing to continue being on the lookout for people importing and transporting maize without proper documents in the area.
He observed that if left unchecked the trend is likely to cause hunger in the country, hence the need to curb the scourge.
Heaps of maize yet to be rebadged for sale at Chipoka Satellite depot
Government has shut down operations of a maize exporting company in Chipata on suspicion that it is exporting government subsidised Food Reserve Agency (FRA) maize to neighbouring countries.
Chipata District Commissioner, Kalunga Zulu, who yesterday led the taskforce against the smuggling of maize and maize products, found over 1800 metric tonnes of maize allegedly being re-bagged at Afgri
storage shed in the district’s industrial area.
ZANIS reports that Mr Zulu found stacks of FRA-branded maize bags, some of which were empty, and some brand-new World Food Programme (WFP)-branded bags, leading to suspicions that FRA maize was being placed into WFP bags and that the company was planning to illegally export the grain.
“This maize is being packed into these brand new WFP-bags as you can see. It is also clear that these FRA bags have been opened by people in this shed because they are not damaged. One cannot claim that
these bags were damaged,” he said.
Mr Zulu observed that Afgri is an exporting company and that FRA maize is not meant for exports but is subsidised by government for local consumption, saying Afgri does not have any contract with FRA but
has been buying FRA maize from a company called Comuga which is on the list of millers that have contracts with the agency.
The DC noted that suspicions have been raised as to how the FRA maize was found at the premises that exports the grain when it is strictly for local consumption.
Mr Zulu stated that when he initially inspected the storage shed, the company manager, Victor Banda, only declared 1300 metric tonnes of maize but was shocked to find over 1800 bags.
He wondered why Mr Banda did not declare about 500 metric tonnes to the taskforce.
He also observed that Afgri has been selling maize to Zambia Breweries for the brewing of opaque beer yet FRA maize is strictly for the grinding of maize for mealie meal.
Mr Zulu expressed concern that despite government making efforts to curb the vice, the district has continued to record increased smuggling of maize and maize products due to the porosity of the
border and dubious business entities that diverted FRA maize to exports.
But Afgri Chipata Manager, Victor Banda, denied the allegation of re-bagging the grain into WFP bags, saying workers were restacking the maize to avoid spillage.
Mr Banda, however, disclosed that Afgri has been selling some of the maize to Zambia Breweries though government subsidised maize under the FRA for grinding of mealie meal.
Meanwhile, Zambia Breweries Chipata Branch Team Leader, Sydney Musonda, confirmed that his company was being supplied maize by Afgri for brewing of Chibuku.
Following an invitation from the Government of Zambia, the European Union has established a mission to observe the 11 August general elections, as well as the referendum on the Bill of Rights. The EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) is led by Chief Observer Cécile Kashetu Kyenge, a Member of the European Parliament from Italy, who arrived in Zambia on 20 July.
Over the last two days Ms Kyenge and her team of experts have met representatives of the Electoral Commission of Zambia, the judiciary, various political parties, civil society organizations, and diplomats of the European Union and its member states.
“I am honored to lead an election observation mission to Zambia, a country that can take pride in its record of democratic elections in the previous years” – Ms Kyenge said at a press conference in Lusaka. “The people of Zambia set a good example for the region in the past, and I trust that all stakeholders want to stay true to this heritage by having peaceful, transparent and credible elections. Our independent and impartial team of observers hopes to have a positive contribution in this democratic process.”
The EU EOM’s Core Team arrived in Lusaka on 29 June, and was joined by 24 Long-Term Observers on 11 July. Another 56 Short-Term Observers will be deployed closer to election day, along with a group of locally recruited observers from EU member states’ diplomatic representations in Lusaka, and a delegation from the European Parliament. This will bring the total number of EU observers beyond one hundred, from all 28 member states as well as from Norway.
The mandate of the mission is to observe all aspects of the electoral process and to assess the extent to which the elections comply with Zambian law, as well as regional and international standards for elections. The EU EOM will work independently to offer an impartial, balanced and informed analysis of the elections.
“Peaceful elections are very important, and our mission fully shares the hope echoed throughout Zambia that the process will be conducted without violence” – Chief Observer Kyenge said. “But let me reiterate that our job does not end with witnessing whether the elections are peaceful or not: we will look at all aspects of the electoral process, including the freedom of assembly, freedom of expression, the access to media, the campaign activities, voting, counting, tabulation, appeals, and all other elements relating to the conduct of the elections.”
The EU Election Observation Mission operates in accordance with the “Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation” adopted in 2005 at the United Nations. All observers adhere to a Code of Conduct that requires them to maintain strict neutrality in the course of their work.
The EU EOM will present its initial findings shortly after election day in a Preliminary Statement. A more comprehensive Final Report, including recommendations for future elections, will be published approximately two months after the end of the electoral process.

SHALAWAMBE, one of Zambia’s best-selling Kalindula bands, has released its first album in almost two decades.
The new album, its sixth that is titled ‘Kula Umone’, to be marketed by the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), comes 18 years after they released ‘Chupo’.
While many renowned kalindula bands of the 80s have gone into oblivion, Shalawambe, under the guidance of Emmanuel Dolenzy Kabwe and his younger brother Julius Chanda, has had the energy to continue. “The album was officially released last month and its marketing was initially done during the Trade Fair (Zambia International Trade Fair). It is being marketed by ZNBC which has also compiled all our songs from the old albums,” Dolenzy told the Weekend Mail in an interview.
Following the death of Ricky Chota (guitar/vocals), Claude Kabwe (bassist) and Gerald Bwalanda (keyboards and percussion), Shalawambe had challenges in moving on.
Dolenzy says it was difficult to find suitable replacements as the old members who died were experienced and knew what Shalawambe Band stood for.
The band was more or less a family affair of three brothers and a cousin. The brothers were Dolenzy, Claude and Julius while the cousin was Ricky and the non-family member was Gerald.
However, Shalawambe has since recruited new members: Clement Chilufya (lead vocals), Wise Mtonga (rhythm guitar) and Timothy Mwape (bass). “The new album is purely a kalindula music album and the message is about social issues which happen in society and people are able to connect with most of our new songs,” Dolenzy explains while naming some of the songs on the album as ‘Kula Umone’, ‘Mary Kwangabwe’, ‘Chancer’, ‘Matai’, ‘Bana Chomba’, ‘Kuwawaya’, ‘Ndekutolela We Lasa’ and a remix of ‘Chupo’.
The band’s first album was titled ‘Shalawambe’, released in 1988 by Teal Record Company. A breakaway from the Zambia National Service (ZNS) outfit Green Labels, they first released their single ‘Kamusisi’ under Teal Records.
At that time, they used to combine farming and music in Luanshya’s Fisenge area while rehearsing at Zambia After Six, a popular pub in Fisenge Farming Block and held shows at Kosapo Bar in Luanshya’s Mikomfwa.
Shalawambe is also known for the song Samora Machel, released under Mondeca, UK in 1989, a tribute to late Mozambique president who died at the height of the liberation struggle in Southern Africa
Zambia Under-17 have made a roaring start to their Cosafa U17 Cup title defence in Mauritius following a an opening day win over Kenya.
Zambia beat Kenya 4-0 to go top of Group B in Port Louis on Friday.
A brace from Zesco Victoria Falls FC striker Nicholas Mulilo in the first half handed Zambia their resounding victory.
Mulilo found the target in the opening quarter in the 4th and 13th minutes and could have added a third in the 30th minute but Kenya goalkeeper George Ouma reacted quickly to deny him a hat-trick.
The Young Zanaco duo of striker Damiano Kola and midfielder Kunda Nkandu completed the rout in the 37th and 42nd minutes respectively.
Zambia face second placed Malawi on July 24 in their penultimate Group B match.
Ten-man Malawi rallied to beat Madagascar 2-1 in the second Group B match on the same date when Henry Chiwaya was sent off in the 67th minute with the sides locked at 1-1 before Frank Chizuze stoppage time winner handed them the three points.
Striker Fwayo Tembo’s signing is paying off, the Power Dynamso bench has declared.
Fwayo arrived at Power in April as a free agent after a ten year career overseas with stints in Tunisia, Switzerland and Romania.
The 27-year-old Zambia striker last weekend scored a brace to inspire Power to their first away win in the FAZ Super Division this season.
His goals saw him replace Martin Phiri as Power’s top scorer this season on six and five goals respectively.
“Fwayo’s arrival has brought a lot of experience in attack he is almost there in terms of fitness he is helping the team and scoring goals,” Power assistant coach Anderson Phiri said.
“With six goals so far, it is a plus for Power Dynamos.”
Fwayo will have a chance to add to his tally this weekend when Power host Nchanga Rangers in a Week 19 game seeking revenge over the Chingola side.
Nchanga were the first team to beat Power this season following a 2-1 home win on March 26 at Nchanga Stadium in Chingola.

Bishop Joshua Banda
The Northmead Assembly of God has dispelled media reports suggesting that its Presiding Overseer Bishop Joshua Banda together with Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia Executive Director Reverend Pukuta Mwanza have received K500, 000 from state House.
And Northmead Assembly of God Executive Board Secretary Gibster Makangila said it is also not true that Bishop Banda is a leader of a group called Christians for Lungu.
In a statement obtained in Lusaka, Mr. Makangila said Bishop Banda is neither a Member nor leader of the said group or a Director at Indeni Oil Refinery as suggested.
He said the church is disappointed and dismayed by libelous misinformation and reports suggesting that Bishop Banda is aligned to one political party adding that he remains one sided in responding to issues affecting the nation.
Mr. Makangila has charged that the reports remain deliberate and calculated efforts by some interest groups to misalign Bishop Banda.
