THE Kariba North Bank Power Station is still far from reaching its maximum power generation capacity because water levels are currently below the expected level, Mr Edward Simbaya says.

Kariba North Bank Power Station manager Edward Mr Simbaya said this yesterday at Kariba North Bank Hydro Power Station in Siavonga.

He said despite the power plant receiving a rise in water levels of about two centimetres per week, the station was only generating between 35 to 45 percent of its normal power generation capacity.

Mr Simbaya, however, said the water levels in the Kariba dam were expected to slightly increase in the next two months.
And station Engineer Mahaku Maloza said the station was currently using three machines to generate power, of which two were used during off peak and the other during peak hours.

Mr Maloza said the country had experienced some good rainfall though it came so late. As such, the water levels were still too low to enable the station generate power.

He said currently the water levels were at 379 metres when it’s supposed to be at 481 metres, of which the station needed about 100 metres to reach the maximum water levels.

Mr Maloza said the country was expected to start generating power to the most demanding areas such as Lusaka and the Copperbelt when Maamba Coal mines starts operating which was expected to supply about 300 megawatts.

ZESCO Limited invited 30 ordinary citizens and journalists to the Kariba dam for them to appreciate the messages the utility company was spreading that load shedding had something to do with low water levels and not turbines as alleged by some sections of society.

ZESCO spokesperson Henry Kapata encouraged the citizens to ask the engineers as many questions as possible so that they could share information with the general public.

Among several questions posed to Zesco Limited were the alleged sub-standard turbines suggesting that they permitted more water than the old ones and the assumptions that Kariba dam was full to capacity.

Mr Kapata noted that rumour mongering had put the company in a very awkward position hence stepping up with massive sensitization.

Felix Mutati’s MMD Faction pushes ahead with National Convention

The Felix Mutati faction has gone a step further in their quest for a national party convention with the inspection of the venue which has been slated for Kabwe Mulungushi Rock of Authority on May 20 to elect new office bearers.

‘Suspended’ MMD spokesperson Raphael Nakachinda yesterday led journalists to the venue while insisting that a convention would be held on May 20.

Mr Nakachinda said in an interview yesterday in Kabwe at the Mulungushi Rock of Authority after inspecting facilities at the institution that the holding of the Convention was in the best interest of not only party members but also Zambians to embrace intra-party democracy.

He said he had sent invitation letters to party president Dr Nevers Mumba and other political parties such as UPND, PF and FDD as well as the diplomatic corps. He further stressed that he had circulated a memo to the 1,655 party members.

“I am not a suspended member of the MMD. Those are manoeuvres by Dr Mumba. I am still a member of the party. We have sent invitation letters to other political parties and Dr Mumba too but it’s up to him to either attend or abscond,” he said.

He accused some MMD members of trying to stop Mulungushi University management to allow them hold a convention.

Mr Nakachinda said that he had got a quotation and expressed happiness with the facilities of the venue, stating that a convention would go ahead as scheduled as all the necessary logistics were in place.

“Our members have been contributing to the successful holding of the convention and from other well-wishers who want to see intra-party democracy, and beyond as we are the mother of democracy,” he said.

Mr Nakachinda said he was an original ‘true blue’ and stated that a convention would be held as all the ten provinces would be represented.
And MMD Central Province chairman Chileshe Kangwa said all preparations to hold a successful convention were in place and that it was the only sure way of advancing democracy.

On the other hand, Acting MMD spokesperson Reuben Sambo has always insisted that there would be no convention before the August 11 general elections.

Road safety education a priority for children – Total Zambia

Total Zambia unveiled a Children’s Road Safety Park at Cherise Kids Park to educate and sensitize children on road safety.
At a time when the country is tragically affected by numerous road accidents, Total Zambia wishes to contribute more to the fight against unsafe behaviours on the road.Total Zambia did this by establishing an appropriate tool aimed at raising awareness on Road safety and preventing, as much as possible, further accidents on our roads especially for school aged children through a children’s road safety awareness program at Cherise Kids’ Park.

The recent development of new roads and increase in motorists in Zambia calls for educating and sensitizing children with practical tools on safe road crossing, walking or cycling on busy roads will help create a safer road environment for the children using roads in the country.

Speaking in Lusaka at the unveiling of the Children Road Safety Park, Total Zambia managing director Damien Ricour-Dumas said Zambia’s improved road network and increase in motorists has underlined the need for broader awareness on road safety.

“As a committed stakeholder to road safety in Zambia, Total signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a Children Road Safety Park with Cherise Kids’ Park Management last year in December.” he said.

Mr. Ricour-Dumas noted that the initiative is aimed at creating a safe environment where children can be educated and sensitized on practical safe road crossing, walking or cycling along busy roads in the cities with single or dual carriage way- a road safety environment with a real urban road simulation.

“Children can use bicycles to try out the mock roadway, which duplicates road conditions children are likely to encounter when riding their bicycle on the street.”

Dumas added that the park is fully equipped with pedestrian crossings, a roundabout and numerous different traffic signs to observe. The creation of the Park also enhances the use of the Road Safety Cubes, provided by Total Zambia, last year, to Cherise Park as a supporting tool for the initiative which will undoubtedly improve awareness of road safety among school aged children.

“This is very important to us as Total because of the emphasis we place on road safety and the lives of motorists, pedestrians and cyclists sharing the use of Zambia’s roads,” he says.

And Minister of Transport and Communication Honourable Kapembwa Simbao said the facility and programme is an example of how if government and the private sector put their efforts together, they will not only achieve their targets but also achieve them quicker through initiatives and partnerships such as the one demonstrated by Total Zambia and Cherise Kids’ Park.

“The merging of two road safety initiatives -the Total ‘road safety cube’ initiative and the Cherise kids Park ‘children’s road safety awareness program’- into the children’s road safety facility and program has the capacity to help us realise our goal of making our roads safer for children.”

With more than 1,500 children under the age of 16 years involved in road accidents in 2014, the need for educating and sensitizing children on road safety remains a priority for all.

Whatever happened to the spirit of Ubuntu?

7

Ubuntu

Africa oh Africa. Africa our motherland; the land of natural beauty and unity. Where everything belonged to everyone and children to the community, all in the spirit of Ubuntu. ‘Ubuntu’ – an African Bantu word, is a philosophy that reflects the human in us. It gives an understanding of who we are as human beings and how we relate to the rest of the universe. Humanity, unity, compassion, love, peace and harmony in the African culture are everything that makes this continent so unique. As South Africa’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu passionately speaks of Ubuntu, “My humanity is caught up, is inextricably bound up, in yours. We belong in a bundle of life. We say, “A person is a person through other persons.”

The picture in my mind now is one of a heavenly place on earth. Where we are all connected as one, where we all care for one another and have empathy towards others’ sufferings. Yet, as some of you will agree, this is a farfetched image, one that no longer exists apart from in the bonfire night stories. The spirit of Ubuntu has since left our traditions. It has been overtaken by greed, selfishness, individualism, hatred, ethnicity and dirty politics. Even as Africa strives to enter the economic semi-periphery or perhaps even the core, the gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen. A 2014 report by Christian Aid and Tax Justice Network-Africa shows that despite buoyant growth rates, there is a broad consensus that progress in human development has been limited given the volume of wealth created.

So then, if the African culture, religion and the general way of living is so inherent in Ubuntu, why is the script so different from what we would all expect? The political conflicts in Africa have become the norm. As a result, the number of refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Africa continue to increase overwhelmingly. According to the Norwegian Refugee Council, one third of the world’s internally displaced persons live in sub-Saharan Africa. It goes on to state that at the end of 2013, 12.5 million people were displaced within their own countries in this region, an increase of about two million from the previous year.

Where have we gone wrong Africa? Why are children going to bed hungry while their neighbors have more than enough to share? Why do we no longer care who lives next door? Why have we become suspicious of people who genuinely mean well to us? The questions are endless and the truth is we, for reasons I seldom understand, are tearing into pieces the Ubuntu fabric that has for decades held us together. The damage is such that not only are we bearing the burden, but our heritors as well.

But the light can be rekindled before it completely extinguishes. Despite the drawbacks, Africa remains a resilient continent. The envy of many for its amazingly beautiful nature. The smiles of the African people that contagiously leave most of those who encounter Africa yearning to return. The hope is alive to restore that natural beauty not only of our tourist destinations and heritage sites but most importantly, of this spirited fragment of the African renaissance.

“I have always known that deep down in every human heart, there is mercy and generosity. No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than the opposite,” (Nelson Mandela, 1994: 542).

I too believe it’s not too late to correct the wrongs already done by the past and present generations. If not for us, for the coming generations to once again experience the love, care, gentleness, kindness and unity of Ubuntu, the African Spirit.

The ruling Patriotic Front has appealed to political players to allow the Electoral Commission of Zambia to independently pick a firm to print ballot papers for the August elections.

In an interview, Mrs Phiri said politicians should desist from putting undue influence on autonomous institutions such as the ECZ.

She said the controversial over the awarding of the tender to print ballot papers is unnecessary.

Mrs Phiri said the ECZ is a credible institution which should be allowed to execute its own mandate independently.

She said the PF is comfortable with the manner in which the Commission has been undertaking its work.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- has set Monday, May 16, 2016, as the commencement of campaigns for the August 11 general elections.

ECZ has also set Monday, May 30 to Friday, June 3 2016 as nomination dates for the Presidential candidates.

On the same Monday, May 30, the ECZ will also receive nominations for the Mayoral and Council Chairpersons.

The ECZ has further set Tuesday, May 31, as date for receiving nomination papers for Parliamentary and Local Government elections.

ECZ Public Relations Manager, Cris Akufuna has confirmed this in a statement.

Mr Akufuna has also appealed to political party aspirants to observe and comply with the time-table and NOT engage in campaigns before the stated dates.

Today’s Message:He Orders Your Steps

10

bible

Today’s Scripture

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord…”
(Psalm 37:23, KJV)

He Orders Your Steps

When we encounter difficult situations, we can be tempted to wonder if we are on the right path for our lives. And yes, sometimes we make poor choices that get us off course. But if your heart is following after God, if you’re determined to stay in faith and put Him first in your life, you can be confident that you are right where you are supposed to be!

You might say, “That couldn’t be right. I’m uncomfortable. Somebody isn’t treating me right.” God will not allow a challenge to come into your life unless He has a divine purpose for it. Truly, nothing in life happens to us; it happens for us. In other words, God uses those difficult things to grow us and stretch us and take us to another level. Remember, He orders your steps. Stay in faith, keep a good attitude, and let Him lead you into the good plan He has for you!

A Prayer for Today

“Father, thank You for ordering my steps. I trust that You are at work in my life even during the times when I don’t understand. Give me the strength and courage to do what is right in Your sight. I bless You today and always in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Nkana humiliated by GBFC

1

Nkana’s unbeaten run ended on Saturday when they lost 3-1 away to Green Buffaloes in Lusaka while champions Zesco United drew again but the status quo was maintained in the FAZ Super Division top two.

Buffaloes dispatched Nkana to their first loss of the season thanks to goals by Sebastian Mwansa, Christopher Katongo and Diamond Chikwekwe in the 20th, 26th and 45th minutes respectively

However, both sides were reduced to ten when when Nkana goalkeeper Scott Ngokane walked first in the 32nd minute before Buffaloes defender Stephen Kabamba was red carded in the 45th minute.

Maybin Chishimba scored Nkana’s consolation in the 56th minute.

Buffaloes are 3rd on 14 points after their second successive big kill of a Kitwe giant just a week after they slayed Power Dynamos 2-1 at the same venue.

At Godfrey ‘Ucar’ Chitalu Stadium in Kabwe, Zesco rallied to snatch a point away to 11th placed Kabwe Warriors.

Josphat Kasusu put Warriors ahead from the penalty spot in the 50th minute but Kenyan forward Jesse Were equalised in the 60th minute to score his 9th goal of the season.

The draw came just three days after Zesco’s 100 percent league start was halted by Lumwana Radiants following a 1-1 home draw in Ndola.

Nkana stay top on 19 points, two more than Zesco from eight and seven games played respectively.

Police cancel next weekend’s UPND Freedom Park rally

31

The opposition UPND has announced that the rally which was set for next Saturday has been cancelled by police.

UPND Secretary Genera Stephen Kakuta revealed that the police in Kitwe and the Kitwe city Council have advised the party that it will not be allowed to hold the rally at Freedom Park on Saturday 14th May.

Mr Kakuta said this is despite giving more than one months notice to the authorities.

He said the police said they could not sanction the event because the ECZ has declared that the official campaign period only begins on 16th May.

“This is despite the fact that the PF has held a number of public rallies across the country in recent weeks, from Chipata to Mazabuka. It is clear that the PF have had a free reign from the police in recent months to travel round the country and campaign without obstruction,” Mr Kakuta said.

“Meanwhile, the UPND and fellow opposition parties have had their meetings forcefully and unlawfully disrupted and been prevented from appearing on radio and TV on several occasions. Just earlier this week police stormed Radio Luswepo in Mbala, Muchinga province, to stop a live interview with Matero MP and UDF party leader Miles Sampa.”

He added, “Moreover, the inconsistency with which the police act from town to town is creating a confusing landscape in which trust and clear understanding of the rules is all but impossible. This is the sort of ambiguity and selective application that creates the conditions for impunity and is mirrored in Government’s own flip-flop approach.”

He said, “To the police, who are supposed to be impartial and professional in their conduct, we suggest they spend less time obstructing opposition plans and more time tracking down the criminals responsible for the recent rise in violent attacks, including those who brutalised our members on Youth Day just weeks ago.”

“To the PF, we suggest if they are concerned that the comparison between our rally and theirs will be a great embarrassment for them then perhaps they should look to change their venue to somewhere other than Heroes Stadium. To our supporters and all well-meaning Zambians, while we regret to announce that our rally has been postponed for now we will advise you of the new details shortly,” said Mr Katuka.

The two teams clash in a 13h00 kickoff FAZ Super Division Week 9 match at Sunset Stadium.

In a pre-match interview, Bwembya said Wanderers must start winning after a spate of poor results.

Wanderers are 13th on the table with 8 points from 8 games played, while second placed Dynamos have 5 points from 8 matches.

“Our performance has been below average as a team. We are working on that to improve starting tomorrow when we face Lusaka Dynamos,” Bwembya said.

Wanderers are searching for only their second win as they face Dynamos.

“This is a must win game. Definitely we are going for 3 points because this is the time to start picking up points,” he said.

Power start post-Chilumba era with win

0

Power Dynamos on Saturday begun life after the dismissal of coach Tenant Chilumba with a 1-0 win over Nkwazi at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

Power fired Chilumba a day before this FAZ Super Division Week 9 match against Nkwazi.

Midfielder Larry Bwalya came off the bench to score the lone goal that helped Power recover from last weekends 2-1 loss at Green Buffaloes.

Substitute Bwalya only lasted 12 minutes on the pitch before heading in Kelvin Mubanga’s corner in the 60th minute.

The home side missed a chance to double the lead when striker Luka Lungu saw his header hit the post on 73 minutes.

Despite losing Nkwazi showed character in both halves and created some decent scoring opportunities.

The Police outfit were the first ones to create a real chance when Jeff Banda had his shot on target stopped by keeper Allan Chibwe after eight minutes.

Chibwe further stopped Steward Chikandiwa from putting Nkwazi ahead when he tipped the striker’s robust shot for a corner in the 18th minute.

President Edgar Lungu on Saturday commissioned construction works for the $1.2 billion solar power plants in Lusaka.

The two 100 MW are expected to be ready before end of the year and are located in the Lusaka South Multi Facility Economic Zone.

This is the country’s first solar photo-voltaic project and is part of the World Bank’s Scaling Solar Program which makes Zambia the first African country to implement the project.

It is funded by the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank and the US Government through the Obama Power Africa Initiative and will be implemented by the Industrial Development Corporation.

The project aims to accelerate the use of alternative and renewable energy sources.
In his speech, President Lungu said the PF government is committed to diversifying the country’s energy sources.

“Thanks to IFC of the World Bank Group and the US Government through the Obama Power Africa Initiative for complementing our efforts in diversifying our energy mix. This event is illustrating efforts my government is making in addressing severe energy deficit which has arisen mainly on account of low water levels in our generation stations,” President Lungu said.

He assured that government remains committed to achieving long term developments in the energy sector.

“Energy is a lifeline of any modern development, our country’s future economic prospects are closely tied to the development of this sector,” he said.

President Lungu regretted that the power deficit has affected job creation levels and government revenue.

“I am pleased that we are here today as testimony of PF government’s efforts to move Zambia forward decisively by adopting alternative approaches aimed at increasing renewable generation and access.”

He added, “With 365 days of sunshine days a year Zambia has great potential to raise investments in solar energy which will not only enable Zambia become a net exporter but will also reduce the country’s dependence on hydro power.”

In July 2015, President Lungu directed IDC to drive the urgent development and installation of at least 600 mega watts of solar power, in order to redress the current power deficit in Zambia and resultant national crisis.

Government says it is exploring ways of enhancing trade between Zambia and Angola in light of the opening of the Mongu-Kalabo road.

Vice President Inonge Wina said on her arrival at Mongu airport this morning, that government is eager to see the locals in Western Province get exposed and benefit from new markets through the entrepreneurship and empowerment programmes the state has initiated.

Ms. Wina said the newly constructed roads will not only provide transport and communication linkage to the locals but also promote new business opportunities and ventures to the whole country.

ZANIS reports that the Vice President stressed the need to harness the water resources from the abundant reservoirs in the province.

She pointed out that sinking of boreholes is a short term solution of addressing the water problems being experienced in Mongu, Sesheke, Senanga, Kalabo and Lukulu districts.

Ms Wina said plans are underway to tap water from the reservoirs to alleviate the water shortages being experienced in these areas.

She noted that government is still committed to providing relief food for all affected people in the areas that were mostly affected by the drought of last year.

Ms Wina stressed that government is working round the clock to ensure that no Zambian will starve in the country.

The Vice President is in Western Province to officially open a clinic in the West Bank at Siloloti and will later pay a courtesy call on the Litunga La Mboela in Nalolo District.
