Fashion Designer, painter and entrepreneur ,Karen Nakamba, is set to launch the Nakonde Fashion Week through her fashion house, Afrikawala, on the 20th of May at Central Park Lodge.

The fashion show, first of its kind in Nakonde, will feature different kinds of African wear for both men and women.

Nakonde is abuzz with the news of the upcoming show, other designers who have never had a chance to showcase their clothes at a fashion show are anxious to get exposure from the upcoming event.

The show, sponsored by African Drilling Limited will see Leo of Black Muntu perform new music at the event, marking his return to the spotlight after a hiatus.

Karen, who recently located her fashion business to Nakonde says she decided to move from Lusaka because the capital city is saturated with fashion houses. She felt Nakonde was the ideal place for her to take her business. It is also her place of birth .

“You know clearing and forwarding is the only viable business in Nakonde and now with Afrikawala setting up here I want to bring change so that people can see how it is done, beginning with this fashion show.” She says.

Karen engaged local Nakonde tailors to sew the clothes the models will showcase because she wants to empower them.

“They were very excited to sew the clothes because this is the first fashion show here and they are happy to be a part of it. It was a lot of work to get everything sewn on time, but we did and now just look forward to the 20th of May.”

Karen, who lost her mother at the age of 15, says fashion can empower people, especially women and help them earn a decent living. “My mother is the one inspired me to pursue my passion dream and thanks to her I am able to make a living off designing clothes and I believe other women can do the same too.”

Karen also does some charity work where she, through Afrikawala, helps widows and orphans by training them to make crafts and be self-reliant.

“I believe in giving people skills so that they can make a living on their own. You know prostitution and other vices is rife here in Nakonde because it is a border town so I started this initiative on my own so that we can save lives and give them what to do.”

Besides designing clothes, Karen also makes beads and other crafts. “I believe in not putting my eggs in one basket, so with my fashion thing going on I also make beads and do some painting as well.”

Kalaba features in Mazembe win

0

Midfielder Rainford Kalaba was the lone Zambian player in Confederation Cup action for TP Mazembe on Sunday.

The Zambia captain played the full 90 minutes of Mazembe’s 1-0 home win over Stade Gabesien of Tunisia in Lubambashi in a last 16, first leg match.

Gabesien eliminated Zanaco 4-1 on aggregate in the previous round to reach the pre-group phase where they were drawn against Mazembe following the 2015 Champions League winners elimination from the latter competition.

Midfielder Nathan Sinkala and defender Kabaso Chongo were unused substitutes in that match.

The return leg will be played on May 17 in Gebes with the winner advancing to the Confederation Cup group phase.

Other teams with Zambian interest in the competition are CF Mounana of Gabon who lost 2-0 to Etoile du Sahel in a match striker Alex Ngonga played the full 90 minutes on Friday in Sousse, Tunisia

Goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene was on the bench in Mamelodi Sundowns 3-1 home win over Medeama of Ghana on Saturday in Pretoria.

Weekend Scorecard: Zambia; beware of Bissau ball boys

0

Zambia’s next 2017 Africa Cup Group E opponents Guinea Bissau has been warned by CAF over the behaviour of their ball boys.

The Group E leaders have been handed a warning of sanctions by the CAF disciplinary committee after their ball boys invaded the pitch in the teams’ 1-0 home win over Kenya on March 23 in Bissau.

Guinea Bissau will host Zambia on June 4 in both sides penultimate Group E match.

Meanwhile, Guinea Bissau and Kenya are again the the receiving end of CAF’s disciplinary committee following crowd trouble in the return leg in Nairobi that the former also won 1-0.

Kenya has been fined US$10,000 by CAF after crowd trouble led to police using tear gas in the dying minutes of the match in Nairobi on March 27 and players from both sides’ constantly contesting refereeing decisions during the game.

Kenya, who will visit Zambia in their final Group E match in September, have been cautioned that should a similar situation occur again, they will play all their international home matches at a neutral venue.

Guinea Bissau lead Group E on 7 points, Congo-Brazzaville are second on 6, tied with third placed Zambia while Kenya have 1 point after four rounds of matches played.

Only one team from each group qualifies with two best overall runners-up in the qualifiers going through to January’s finals in Gabon.

UPND cadres are dressing in PF regalia and causing violence

Frank Bwalya addressing the news briefing
Frank Bwalya addressing the news briefing

The ruling PF has accused the UPND of buying PF regalia and sending its cadres to cause violence in PF strongholds.

Addressing a media briefing at the PF secretariat in Lusaka, PF Deputy Spokesman Frank Bwalya said this is one of the tactics that the UPND is using in order to make the PF unpopular.

Mr Bwalya was commenting on yesterday’s violence in Lusaka’s Matero area which saw UPND cadres ransacked PF offices after [police tear gassed a peaceful UPND youth rally.

He said the PF has intelligence reports that the UPND top leadership is behind this scheme of dressing up their cadres in PF uniforms and unleashing them on innocent citizens.

Mr Bwalya said the cadres that descended on PF offices in Matero yesterday were not from the ruling party but that they were sent by the UPND and dressed them in PF uniforms.

And there was confusion at the PF secretariat this morning after a named PF cadre was savagely beaten up after he was accused of belonging to the UPND.

The youth was identified to be a UPND member and accused of having been part of the group that attacked the PF offices in the area.

The victim was only rescued by Mr Bwalya and other senior PF officials moments before the press conference started.

Meanwhile, Mr Bwalya says yesterday’s attack on the PF office was well planned and calculated by people within the UPND who have plans of causing havoc and terror.

“We have heard leaders in UPND, specifically Mr Hakainde Hichilema and those who have chosen to support him such as former Republican Vice President Dr Guy Scott and Mr Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba using words such as Armageddon which don’t promote peace,” Mr Bwalya said.

Below is Mr Bwalya’s full statement released this morning

PRESS STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE PF DEPUTY SPOKESPERSON AT THE PF SECRETARIAT, LUSAKA, ZAMBIA.
MONDAY, MAY 9, 2016.

INTRODUCTION

We have called this press conference to update our members and all patriotic Zambians on two issues. The first issue relates to our unwavering commitment to uphold the outcome of the Peace Indaba that was called by the three church mother bodies at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Lusaka on March 29, 2016. The second issue is about the ongoing membership mobilisation in our party as well as important meetings which are part of our 2016 General Election programme.

PF AGAINST POLITICAL VIOLENCE

Many people in Zambia today have heard the leadership of the United Party for National Development (UPND) accusing our party of flouting what political parties that participated in the Peace Indaba agreed upon as outlined in the communique that emanated from the same Indaba at the Anglican Cathedral. Specifically, the UPND has been accusing PF of causing political violence. However, we are happy to note that Zambians are seeing for themselves how UPND has continued with their violent ways.

Allow me to cite two examples of UPND violence that Zambians have witnessed recently. On Friday, April 29, 2016 we held a Youth Mobilisation Rally at Manungu ground in Monze town. Known UPND cadres dressed in their party regalia came to our meeting and attempted to disrupt the rally. As a party committed to ending political violence we restrained ourselves and all our cadres. It is the police who saved the situation. The police arrested two UPND cadres and kept vigil until our meeting ended. A number of our members were threatened with violence.

Yesterday, Sunday, May 8, 2016 UPND cadres descended on our constituency office in Matero, Lusaka after their meeting in the area and maliciously damaged our office leaving it ransacked. This was done on a Sunday which is the day of worship for many Zambians and it was done without any form of provocation. As such, we believe that the attack on our office was well planned and calculated by people within the UPND who have plans of causing havoc and terror in our peaceful country. We have heard leaders in UPND, specifically Mr Hakainde Hichilema and those who have chosen to support him such as former Republican Vice President Dr Guy Scott and Mr Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba   using words such as Armageddon which don’t promote peace.

The Communique that came out of the Cathedral Peace Indaba was categorical about the need for us to stop using insulting language against one another. Again the UPND which has been accusing us of not following what we agreed in the Cathedral Peace Indaba Communique are the ones whose leader was quoted by a local tabloid using insulting language against the leader of our party Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu. Mr Hichilema used provocative and highly defamatory language that I can’t even repeat here.

We know that UPND has a plan to escalate violence ahead of the forthcoming general election while accusing PF of instigating violence. As a matter of fact, the allegation that our party will rig the forthcoming elections is part of the plan to incite violence after voting.

Therefore, we wish to urge the Zambia Police Service and other law enforcement agencies to do more to stop the UPND from making our peaceful country ungovernable. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. The writings are on the wall.

On our part we wish to reiterate our unquestionable commitment to upholding what we agreed at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross Peace Indaba as contained in the Communiqué. Moreover, we are fully committed and determined to run an issue based election campaign devoid of violence. Therefore, we urge our members to do everything possible to promote peace during the election campaign period and beyond.

We are warning our members against retaliation when we are attacked. Our members should instead report to the police. We are also advising our members to avoid violence even under extreme provocation.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES

We wish to inform our members and all patriotic Zambians that we shall hold a rally in Kitwe at the Freedom Park to endorse our party leader Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu as PF presidential candidate in the 2016 presidential election. The meeting will take place on Saturday, May 14, 2016 starting at 14 hours. Senior members of our party including our Secretary General Mr Davis Chama, Hon Dr Chishimba Kambwili, Hon Jean Kapata will be among those who shall address the meeting.

On Sunday, May 15, 2016 we shall have a rally in Lusaka at Kalundu Basic School in Chilanga constituency starting at 14 hours. The rally will be addressed by His Excellency Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu and other senior members of our party.

And on Saturday, May 21, 2016 we shall officially launch our 2016 Election Campaign at a mega rally at Heroes Stadium in Lusaka. The mega rally will start at 10:00 hours. It will be addressed by His Excellency Mr Edgar Chagwa Lungu and other PF senior members. At the same mega rally, we shall launch our 2016-2021 Party Manifesto and unveil campaign material.

CONCLUSION

We wish to reiterate our call for a peaceful and issue-based election campaign. We should not allow the competition to serve break our peaceful country.

Finally, we urge our members to pray for the success of the outlined activities and make plans to attend them.

Security officers in Luangwa District have again intercepted 34 prohibited immigrants who were trying to use the Luangwa border to cross to South Africa.

Luangwa Police Officer In-Charge, Assistant Superintendent, Mataa Muleta and Immigration officers confirmed the interception of the 34 male Ethiopian immigrates who were suspected to cross the Zambezi river into Zimbabwe in route to South Africa.

Assistant Superintendent Mulata and the Immigration officers said the 34 Ethiopian Nationals entered Zambia through Nakonde border post from Tanzania and disembarked from the vehicle they were traveling in at Luangwa Bridge market in Rufunsa District as they were trying to avoid a police checkpoint which is mounted there.

They said the 34 immigrants who were arrested over the weekend were spotted by the alert community members who reported to the police and that when they realized that they been reported they went in different directions but where apprehended along the D145 Luangwa main road.

Assistant Superintendent Mulata further said one of the 34 was badly beaten by community members after they suspected him of being a ritual killer and is nursing wounds at Katondwe mission hospital.

He said the 33 were currently in police custody awaiting further instructions from Headquarters and efforts to get a comment from the Police and Immigration Spokespersons proved futile as their phones went unanswered.

Meanwhile Acting Luangwa District Commissioner, Jairos Simukoko also confirmed the arrest of the 34 prohibited immigrates and expressed that this should be a serious syndicate as this is the second time that another group of prohibited immigrants have been incepted by the Security wings.

Mr Simukoko said the first group comprising 16 Ethiopian Nationals was intercepted at Maozeka Council checkpoint by alert security wings last month in April and now it is the 34 who have again been intercepted.

He however commended the security wings and urged them to continue with their alertness so that human trafficking is reduced in the area.

Last month in April 16 prohibited Ethiopian Immigrants who were traveling in a Toyota Haice mini bus driven by two Zambian nationals were intercepted along the Luangwa D145 main road and appeared before the Luangwa Magistrate Court were they were fined K1000 each or six months imprisonment in default.

Ms Wina said politics should not divide Zambians and hence there was need to continue preaching messages of peace, love and unity.

She was speaking in Livingstone yesterday when she officiated at United Church of Zambia (UZC) Dambwa Central Congregation fundraising church service.

During the fundraising church service, which was aimed at raising money to complete the construction of a new church, Ms Wina donated a K20, 000 and pledged to contribute 50 bags of cement towards the project.

She said a union that was built on the love of God was built on a solid foundation.

She thanked UCZ for making valuable contributions to society as well as to the Government at large.

“UCZ has a number of secondary schools, College, clinic and a University among others.

“Many have benefited from UCZ and have gone ahead to distinguish themselves from Government and private sector. I am what I am today because of my UCZ background,” Ms Wina said.

She also said UCZ had mad positive strides in the response to HIV and in moulding youths to become responsible citizens in society.

UCZ Dambwa Central Congregation reverend Amos Mulenga Musonda urged church members to unite as they were raising money to build the temple of God.

In his sermon under the title “let’s turn together and build the temple of God’, Rev Musonda said there was need for church members to practice the love of God and get connected with the Lord.

Commonwealth to send an Election Observer Mission to Zambia

Commonwealth Deputy Secretary General (political and Human Rights) Dr. Josephine Ojiambo
Commonwealth Deputy Secretary General (political and Human Rights) Dr. Josephine Ojiambo

Commonwealth Deputy Secretary General (political and Human Rights) Dr. Josephine Ojiambo has said the Commonwealth Secretariat is ready to send an Election Observer Mission team to observe the August elections and experts to assist in strengthening the capacity of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) as requested by the Zambian Government.

And Dr. Ojiambo said that the Commonwealth Secretariat was following with keen interest President Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s leadership role in women empowerment and was happy with Zambia’s leadership in eliminating Child marriages.

During a meeting when she paid a courtesy call on Her Honour the Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, Mrs Inonge Wina in London last month, Dr. Ojiambo recalled the meeting between the then Secretary General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma and President Lungu on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 70) where the President requested the active participation of the Commonwealth in complementing government efforts in the Constitution Reform process, strengthening of the electoral system and support to the women empowerment agenda.

In the meeting, the Deputy Secretary-General acknowledged receipt of a letter from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Harry Kalaba, extending an invitation to the Commonwealth Secretariat to send an Election Observer Team for the August 11 elections.

Dr. Ojiambo said that the Commonwealth Secretariat was in the process of putting together a pre-election assessment visit to Zambia that will be followed by an election observer mission adding that the Commonwealth Secretariat was ready to help strengthen the capacity of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in order to ensure broader participation and dialogue among stakeholders.

And Mrs Wina said Zambia had maintained a reputable record of peaceful and democratic elections and its electoral system was among a few truly independent systems on the continent. She assured the Commonwealth that the August 11 general election will be free and fair, saying a credible and independent electoral system was firmly in place.

In the meeting, the Vice President said that the Zambian Government considered international elections observers as key to ensuring a credible electoral outcome that would be representative of the will of the people.

She informed Dr. Ojiambo that the preparations of the elections were progressing well and stated that any assistance offered to strengthen the ECZ was welcome adding that the Zambian Government was committed to ensuring transparency in the conduct of the elections and that the ECZ operated independently without any interference from Government.

“Sometimes when you hear people talk negative about Zambia’s electoral system you wonder which Zambia they are referring to. All political stakeholders, political parties, NGOs, the civil societies, security wings and all interest groups are fully involved at every stage of the electoral system. All political parties have representation in all stages of the electoral system starting from the polling station, counting of results, verification and signing of results before they are transmitted. We are calling on the Commonwealth to help bring all political stakeholders together and provide an opportunity for training and dialogue to gain consensus on electoral issues,” she said.

She said people casting doubt over the electoral system should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve.

And the Vice President further informed the Commonwealth Secretariat that President Lungu had demonstrated political will towards empowering women to fully participate in elections. She said that President Lungu had directed that at least 40 percent of people aspiring to be leaders at Local Government and Parliamentary level should be women.

“The President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu is a champion of women’s rights and he is committed to have 40 percent of parliamentary seats being held by women. The Zambian Government has taken the initiative to work with the civil societies, traditional leaders and other stakeholders to raise awareness about women and girls-women’s rights and the response is encouraging. We are inviting the commonwealth Secretariat to partner with the Government of the Republic of Zambia in the fight against vices such as early and forced marriages and gender-based violence, among other issues affecting women,” she said.

Kabundi Congregation in Chingola during a home empowerment service for the Church’s minister’s house where he donated Ten Thousand Kwacha towards the project.

Ambassador Malanji also contributed Three Thousand Kwacha towards the fundraising committee.

Reverend Siame urged congregants to vote wisely and elect leaders capable of improving people’s lives.

He also asked members to contribute towards the empowerment project to ensure that ministers are provided with decent accommodation and not live as destitutes.

Reverend SIAME noted that it is sad most ministers in the Church retire as destitute because members failed to provide for them after leaving ministry.

And PF member Bowman Lusambo has charged that the Copperbelt is the ruling party stronghold.

Mr Lusambo says the ruling party has done its home work and will ensure that the region gives President Lungu and the PF overwhelming support.

He says the Copperbelt will once again back President Lungu and the PF like it has always done in the past.

Violence broke out in Matero Sunday afternoon after police fired tear gas canisters to stop a UPND youth rally held at Matero Community Hall.

The rally which was attended by a huge crowd comprising mainly UPND and sympathisers of area MP Miles Sampa was peaceful until police stormed the venue and ordered that the event be stopped.

This was despite the police having issued the UPND with a permit two weeks ago to hold the rally.

The UND cadres and officials had to scamper in all directions after tear gas was fired with some sustaining minor injuries in the process.

UPND Vice President Canisius Banda was one of the key officials who was caught up the fracas.

The UPND cadres later reorganised themselves and descended the local PF party offices on Commonwealth and destroyed property in revenge attacks.

In an interview after the disturbances, Dr Banda said the UPND is disappointed with the unprofessional behaviour of the police.

“With the awareness of the police, today, in our thousands as concerned youths, we assembled in Matero so that we could confer as citizens. On instruction, the police threw teargas canisters at us, that is how with tears in our eyes, we left, our hearts heavy,” Dr Banda said.

Meanwhile, the ruling PF successfully held its own youth rally in Lusaka’s Bauleni area Sunday afternoon.

ECZ Director Michael Chilala says the institution is identifying numerous cases of forged certificates from some people during the verification exercise.

Dr. Chilala has advised people in a habit of forging documents to stop as it is a very serious offense.

He says his office that the institution is, however, reporting such cases to the police for onward prosecution of the culprits.

United Party for National Development(UPND) spokesperson, Charles Kakoma has said that his party is facing challenges obtaining letters of confirmation for Grade 12 certification from the Examination Council of Zambia(ECZ).

In a telephone interview from Kitwe with ZNBC, Mr Kakoma said that the challenges have delayed the opposition party’s adoption process.

Mr Kakoma said that said most of the applicants have spent over two weeks trying to obtain the letters of confirmation.

Mr Kakoma was speaking when he was asked about UPN’s progress in finalising the adoption process of people who will stand on the party ticket.

Most political parties participating in the August General elections have said that they will soon conclude their adoption processes.

Rainbow Party National Coordinator for Mobilisation, Robert Chikwelete said that his party will announce the successful applicants in the next two weeks. Mr. Chikwelete told ZNBC News in Lusaka today that his party will field candidates country-wide.

Meanwhile, Patriotic Front Deputy Spokesperson Frank Bwalya has said that says the UPND’s popularity will be tested in the next three months.

Mr. Bwalya has alleged that the UPND has released huge sums of money to pay people faking to be defecting to their party ahead of the August 11th General Elections.

Mr. Bwalya said that all the people who are paid to be faking the defections will not even vote for the UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema because they just want to eat his money and leave.

Mr. Bwalya said that it is should click in the minds of the UPND that the people who are defecting are going alone without being accompanied by anyone when in the actual sense they may have some followers.

Mr. Bwalya cited that when former Lusaka Province Minister Mulenga Sata went to file in his application for the executive mayor position, he went to the secretariat with a huge following but wondered why he was not accompanied by the same followers when he was joining the UPND.
