3

ECZ
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) says it has started training district electoral officers in Northern Province ahead of the August 11 general elections.

ECZ Provincial electoral officer, Abel Siwakwi who officially opened a five-day training workshop in Kasama District has since urged participants to take the training seriously.

Mr. Siwakwi said there are a number of changes to the new constitutions which requires proper understanding by the electoral officers.

He further pointed out the new system of electing a Mayor as one of the issues that need to be given particular attention during the training.

Mr. Siwakwi revealed that August 11 election will go side by side with a referendum exercise hence the need for the electoral officers to take advantage of the training workshop so as to have a correct understanding on the matter.

He said participants have been drawn from different districts of Northern Province and the workshop is likely to be concluded on Thursday this week.

Mr. Siwakwi said others who are participating in the ongoing workshop are returning officers, and their assistants.

My father’s body is turning in his grave-Mulenga Sata

Late President Michael Sata’s son Mulenga said his father’s body is turning in his grave looking at the way the PF has been hijacked.

Mulenga who today announced his defection to the UPND said his late father could never have imagined what is now happening to the party he founded.

He said the decision to leave the PF was a tough, emotional and difficult one to make but stated that it was the right thing to do.

He said morale among party members is now at an all-time low due to what he termed lack of vision.

Mulenga said the PF today is not what it was when late President Sata died in 2014 and that the current PF has been left to the hijackers.

He said the Lungu administration has completely quashed all the economic gains the country made and eroded the investor confidence.

Mulenga observed that the Lungu administration is yet to give a roadmap out of the current economic quagmire.

He also charged that President Lungu does not have a clear understanding of separation of power.

Mulenga said sadly, all what has now been erode by the rising cost of living which has led to increased poverty.

He charged that President Sata’s grand infrastructure programmes such as the Link Zambia, L 400 and Pave Zambia projects have all been mismanaged by the Lungu administration.

And welcoming Mulenga, UPND Vice President Geoffrey Mwamba Bwalya said there is nothing left of the PF since all founding members have already left.

Mulenga becomes the third members of President Lungu’s cabinet to dump the party after Obvious Mwaliteta and Keith Mukata.

Zambia National Student’s Union (ZANASU) has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to enact the Student’s Loans bill before parliament is dissolved.

In a statement made available to ZANIS in Ndola today ZANASU vice president Prince Ndoyi said his union has seen political will from President Edgar Lungu and called on the opposition MPs to make the matter a big issue before parliament closes.

Mr. Ndoyi said politicians must in the interest of the nation demonstrate their dynamic approach for the task of universities in an underdeveloped country like Zambia are fundamentally not different from what they are in developed societies.

He noted that financing still remains a big challenge and therefore the bill once enacted meal allowance riots will become a thing of the past.

Mr. Ndoyi said the student’s body demanded that the same amount of political will to the last enacted amendment bills received should be channelled towards the student’s Loan bill or they will continue to face unending hardships in student finances.

“Recently, the two public universities were embroiled in indefinite closures that were widely believed to have culminated from delayed meal allowances. It is only prudent that the interest of students is put first by closing the chapter of student’s loans facility that will see to it that the issue of student financing is adequately addressed,” Mr. Ndoyi said.

He added that students must begin to call for the same as this issue is long overdue and must not be another campaign item but be seen to its logical conclusion before the dissolution of parliament.

He also called on students to support this call as the facility will not only benefit students from Copperbelt University (CBU) and University of Zambia (UNZA) but will extend to other higher learning institutions which will widen the financing bases and encourage the private sector to participate as the framework will increase the resource envelop.

Lusaka Province Minister Mulenga Sata has defected to the opposition UPND.

Mr Sata announced his resignation at a UPND press briefing in Lusaka Tuesday.

But the Patriotic Front-PF- says the defection of Mr Sata to the UPND has no impact on the ruling party.

PF Lusaka Province Chairman Horace Longwe says Mr Sata’s defection is inconsequential because he was not factor in the PF.

Mr. Longwe stated that the PF is aware of Mr Sata’s plans and that he wanted to coerce other Lusaka councillors into defection but declined.

The PF Lusaka provincial chairman also commended two councillors, Robinson Kalota and Humfrey Kapapula who he said resisted attempts to force them to defect to UPND.

Mr Longwe was speaking at a press briefing held in Lusaka.

And Mr Kapapula revealed that Mr Sata had invited him to the home of UPND leader last night were he was informed that he should attend a press briefing this morning which he declined.

And Mr Kalota wondered how many people have been duped into joining the UPND in a similar manner.

In The Kitchen With Kanta: Greek Salad

In-The-Kitchen-With-Kanta-Logo (1)

Greek Salad

I’ve been feeling really uninspired and lazy this week, and so I haven’t really taken much time to actually cook a lot.  I have had a lot more light meals, because I simply haven’t had the time or energy.  So, I have been enjoying a variety of salad dishes and you would be surprised how much you can do with salads.  There are so many different types that you can make; potato salad, egg salad, Caesar salad, Mediterranean, the list is endless.  Lately I have been addicted to Greek salads, maybe it’s because we’ve had Feta cheese in the house, or maybe it’s because I enjoyed a lovely Greek Salad at Intercontinental hotel whilst in Zambia.  Either way Greek salad is really hitting the spot for me, so here’s one of my favourite Greek salad recipes.  You can enjoy it with any meat or poultry; from T-bone steak or lamb, to chicken or duck.  This salad is perfect for a healthy meal and great for summer BBQ’s and parties.  If anyone ever asks you to bring a dish to a party, you can simply toss together these simple ingredients, and you will be sure to impress.  Enjoy!!

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Serves: 4 people as a side dish and it can easily be double for more portions

Ingredients

  • 4 large tomatoes, cut into wedges
  • 1 cucumber, roughly chopped
  • ½ a red onion, thinly sliced
  • 16 black olives, sliced or whole
  • 1 tsp dried oregano (optional)
  • 85g feta cheese, cut into square cubes
  • 4 tbsp of olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

greek-salad.jpg 2

Method

Cut up your ingredients as instructed above. Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl, and season with salt and pepper.

Serving

Serve as a side with any main…although maybe not with nshima and Kapenta this time.  You can substitute your feta cheese with soft goat’s cheese, if you cannot find it in your local supermarkets.

PF must apologise for failure to enact information law-Chipenzi

8
FODEP Executive Director McDonald Chipenzi
FODEP Executive Director McDonald Chipenzi

Electoral Expert McDonald Chipenzi says the PF Government must apologize to Zambians for failing to enact the Access to Information Bill.

Last week, Information Minister Chishimba Kambwili announced that Government will not table the Access to Information Bill due to what he termed as unprofessional conduct of some media houses.

But Mr Chipenzi said the PF Government must apologise for wasting time and resources globetrotting and workshopping in the pretext of drawing lessons from other countries on the implementation of the Access to Information laws and yet officials were just enriching themselves.

He said Zambians should make access to information a campaign issue and ensure that the government to be birthed after the August 11, 2016 General Elections does not also offer promissory note but enact the law.

“The failure by the PF government to enact the Access to Information law in the last five years of its rein, punctuated with unfilled promises, is a demonstration of lack of commitment to accountability and transparency in the management and administration of national, public and electoral affairs,” Mr Chipenzi said.

He said the procrastination exhibited in the five years on the enactment of this law has further exposed government’s deceit and inconsistent on the bill which he said has just been gathering dust at the Ministry of Information.

“For five years, the PF government has been making promissory notes on the enactment of this law to the people of Zambia but no practicable steps were undertaken, a phenomenon synonymous to this government,” Mr Chipenzi said.

“This piece of legislation would have been very instrumental in curbing corruption not only in the public service but in the electoral process too which later lead to prudent management of public resources and effective crusade against corruption.”

Mr Chipenzi said “it is unfortunate that this failure comes when corruption is on the rise and Zambia joins the rest of the world commemorating World Freedom Day and one wonders what government will tell the nation and the media fraternity on why it has failed to enact this law.”

He said Zambians now should seriously reflect on the type of government they desire to have and the type of people to elect in national leadership to avoid deceit contaminate the political process in the country.

Guy Scott Challenged to resign from PF

47

Dr Guy Scott at his residence
Dr Guy Scott at his residence

PATRIOTIC Front (PF) youths have challenged former vice-president Guy Scott to resign from the party on moral grounds instead of constantly issuing attacks on President Edgar Lungu.

Dr Scott was quoted in The Post newspaper on Thursday last week pledging to continue causing havoc in the PF until President Lungu and the PF were removed from power.

While still in the PF, as the party’s member of Parliament for Lusaka Central, Dr Scott had persistently taken an opposition stance in the ruling party.

PF youth national chairperson Stephen Kampyongo said it was naive for Dr Scott to allegedly speak ill of President Lungu using the media.

Mr Kampyongo, who is Local Government and Housing Minister, told journalists in Lusaka yesterday that Dr Scott, being one of the senior party members, needed to lead by example in disseminating messages of goodwill to the people of Zambia, especially that he had served as a Republican vice-president.

“I want to express my disappointment with the sentiments attributed to the former vice-president (Dr Scott). We need to learn from elders how to progress in leadership, but the sentiments attributed to him are really discouraging and I think he needs an introspection on the opportunity the people of Zambia gave him,” Mr Kampyongo said.

He said Dr Scott should not bring about divisions but work towards helping to foster peace and unity in the country instead of turning against President Lungu.
Dr Scott was unreachable for a comment by Press time.

Meanwhile, PF deputy secretary general Mumbi Phiri said the ruling party was ready for the elections and that President Lungu would not be detracted by his critics in the quest to continue to develop the country.

Ms Phiri said the PF would continue to carry out issue-based campaigns.

She was speaking when she featured on Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC)’s Sunday Interview.

“Those that are attacking the ruling party have their own issues and those that have left PF have not been genuine members. I can assure you that the elections will be free and fair without any political violence,” Ms Phiri said.

She said the PF had done its best to warrant the people of Zambia to continue supporting Mr Lungu and dismissed claims from some sections of society that the ruling party wanted to rig the elections.
