Opposition UPND President Hakainde Hichilema has accused the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) Government of of giving very little attention to farmers.

In a statement released to the media today, Mr Hichilema said that despite the large number of Zambians engaged in agriculture sector and the importance of the work of farmers in not just providing food security, but also helping to keep food prices down, the agricultural sector has received little attention from the PF Government.

Below is the full statement

OFFICIAL STATEMENT

Supporting our farmers

As we undertake our party mobilisation activities across the country we are keeping our eyes firmly on the most important issues. Our people continue to push for greater support of farmers and agricultural activities in the country. Despite the large number of Zambians engaged in this sector and the importance of the work of farmers in not just providing food security, but also helping to keep food prices down, it receives little attention from the PF Government.

While we cannot blame the El Nino or such events on the PF, we can and should hold the Government to account for what they are, or are not, doing to help farmers through the drought and uncertain period. Suffice to mention that close to 40% of fresh water in Southern Africa is in Zambia and this can be utilized for irrigation. There is no reason why we always have to wait for the rain season to farm.

We continue to call for a bigger vision for the farming sector and in particular direct support for agribusiness and value-addition industries. These are essential for creating sustainable jobs and helping keep food prices down.

Government must help create an environment in which such ventures can start up, grow and flourish. This means making it easier and quicker to set up a business, supporting relevant knowledge transfer and skills training initiatives and marketing the opportunities to companies looking for suppliers, both within Zambia and beyond.

In the UPND we remain excited about the potential for agribusiness that can play a major part in uplifting the prosperity of our nation, as well as for each farmer and their dependents. The window of opportunity is there but we must grasp hold of it quickly and decisively.

The Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) fears that the holding the referendum on the Bill of Rights together with the tripartite elections will distract voters’ from realizing the importance of the referendum.

SACCORD Executive Director Boniface Cheembe says he therefore feels that holding a constitution referendum alongside the 2016 general election is a bad idea.

He says an undertaking of such magnitude as the referendum should not be held together with an equally important undertaking as the elections.

Mr. Cheembe has told Qfm News by telephone that holding the referendum alongside the general election will simply dilute the whole process of adopting the Bill of Rights as part of the Country’s constitution.

Mr. Cheembe says this is because people will be more focused on the elections.

Speaking during a retreat parade for the former IG Stella Libongani, IG kanganja states that as Inspector General, Ms. Libongani exhibited high levels of dedication, diligence, loyalty and commitment to duty in the Zambia police service.

He says the service will always cherish Ms. Libongani’s good deeds, integrity and massive contribution to the nation as a whole.

The newly appointed Zambia police service chief adds that his predecessor will go down in the history of the Zambia police service stating that the law enforcement agency’s history will never be complete without her name.

“One I know for sure is that it will be incomplete when the story of the Zambia police is rewritten without mentioning of this gallant woman Ms. Stella Libongani, in conclusion I will always think of Ms. Libongani as an authentic, humble and wise leader Zambia has ever had in the police service,” IG kakoma said

Meanwhile the former Inspector general of police Stella Libongani implored all men and women in uniform to remain loyal to the Government of the day and committed to duty in the spirit of unity, peace and hard work.

Businessmen can’t make good Presidents-Fr Frank Bwalya

Ruling PF Chairman for Media Fr Frank Bwalya has charged that UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema will never become republican President because people from the corporate world do not make good Presidents.

Fr Bwalya said Mr Hichilema should stop misleading Zambians that he will turn around the economy if he becomes President because businessmen cannot make good Presidents.

He said history shows that most people drawn from the corporate world struggle in politics and end up failing to become Presidents.

Fr Bwalya was speaking in Lusaka on Friday when he featured on a special radio programme on Hot FM in response to Mr Hichilema’s own radio appearance on the same station on Thursday.

“This man whom we call Mr Kalusa because he has always been losing elections was here on this station claiming that President Lungu has failed, I am here to tell the Zambians that they should not even pay attention to Mr Kalusa because he is a bitter man who is desperate for power,” Fr Bwalya said.

He added, “Mr Kalusa should forget about becoming President of this great country because the blood he shed after mismanaging the privatisation of this country’s assets will continue crying out to God and God will continue listening to those cries.”

Fr Bwalya said Mr Hichilema cannot make a good President because he is simply a dealer who is only good at selling things.

“This is why God will not allow a dealer to run this country because he will sell everything and give himself a cut, the same way he did with privatisation.”

The outspoken Fr Bwalya lashed out at Mr Hichilema for attacking President Lungu’s abilities to manage the country.

“On this same programme, Mr Kalusa was busy mocking President Lungu that he cannot manage the economy because he has never managed any business. You see, the programme with this man is that he is always motivated by profits. All he knows is to sell and earn a profit and this is why God doesn’t allow business men to rule nations because they are profit motivated,” he said.

“This is why God will not allow a dealer to run this country because he will sell everything and give himself a cut, the same way he did with privatisation.”

On the constitution amendments, Fr Bwalya said Mr Hichilema is being very ungrateful for stating that President Lungu has failed to give Zambians a people driven constitution.

“If a parent promises a child a number of items before going to boarding school and when school opens, the parent manages to give the child 80 percent of the items promised due to hardships and when the child reaches schools, he starts speaking ill about the parent and when the school authorities call the parent to inform them that the child was insulting them because he didn’t receive 100 percent of the items promised, the parent would feel so betrayed, I guess this is how President Lungu is feeling when he reads such comments from Mr Kalusa about the constitution.”

Fr Bwalya continued, “Mr Kalusa’s altitude can be compared to Umwana wa ndoshi (Child of a witch) because Umwana wa ndoshi eushitasha (A child of a witch is the one who doesn’t appreciate). With Mr Kalusa, everything that President Lungu does is wrong and this is why he will continue losing elections.”

Lwandamina banking on Katongo and Chansa for CHAN glory

7

George Lwandamina says Christopher Katongo and Isaac Chansa should add some much-needed experience at the CAF African Nations Championship(CHAN) for Zambia.

Zanaco midfielder Chansa and Green Buffaloes striker Katongo return to the big stage of African football over ten months after they were axed from the Zambia fold by ex-coach Honour Janza.

The 2012 Africa Cup winning duo are expected to headline Zambia’s CHAN team at the tournament Rwanda will host from January 16 to February 7.

“They were roped in to bring in experience. They won the AFCON where Chris was the captain and moreover he is still actively playing with Green Buffaloes,” Lwandamina said.

“We thought they should bring in their experience and so far the interaction with the young players has been overwhelming.

“They have vast knowledge in terms of tournaments and they have been to four tournaments and have lots to share.”

Meanwhile, Zambia left for a four-day training camp in South Africa on Friday morning where they will play Angola on Sunday in a pre-CHAN friendly.

Zambia are in Group D at CHAN alongside Zimbabwe, Uganda and Mali whom they will play on January 19, 23 and 27 respectively.

Aunt narrates defilement ordeal

court

A 35-YEAR-OLD woman of Kitwe has testified before the magistrate’s court how her 13-year-old niece was allegedly defiledby her 56-year-old grandfather.
This is in a case in which Leonard Besa of house number 1067 Kawama township is facing one count of defilement.
Besa is alleged to have committed the offence on November 30 last year in Kitwe, by having unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16.
He appeared before magistrate Kampinda Chipamu on Tuesday where he pleaded not guilty to defiling his grandchild.
Sandra Muyembe testified that on the material day, her niece went to school and that she took long to return.
“My niece knocks off from school at 12:00 hours but she came back at 16:00 hours. When she returned, I noticed that she was not looking like herself and I noticed that there was also something wrong with her uniform.
“When I asked her what had happened, she told me that she went to her grandfather’s house, where he got hold of her and defiled her,” she said.
“She told me that Besa had grabbed her and made her lie on the chair and had sex with her, but his wife found him and ordered him to stop,” Ms Muyembe testified.
The court heard that the matter was then reported to the police where the victim and her guardian were issued with a medical report form.

It is primitive to categorize anyone on the basis of their tribe-Davies Chama

Davies Chama
Davies Chama

Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General (SG) Davis Chama has said that championing tribal hatred and politics is a primitive way of conducting politics.

Speaking during Pan African Radio’s OFF the CUFF programme anchored by Hermit Hachilonde, Mr. Chama said that it is utter backwardness to define anyone based on tribe, adding that even entertaining the idea of tribal voting is primitive.

He has however urged the electorate to cast aside sectarian interests and choose leaders who will develop Zambia regardless of tribe and region.

“It is primitive to categorize anyone on the basis of their tribe, because we are one Zambia one nation, in a case when God created this Earth, God only created two people Adam and eve, so we are all children of two parents, anyone is my relative because we are all interconnected, eee.. So this thing of categorizing each other on the basis of tribe is very primitive, even where people say voting on the basis of tribal is very primitive, we must be looking for leaders who will provide leadership who will develop our country, because when you elect a leader who is going to provide for each and every member of the society, you can have your tribes men in statehouse, but he will not pay school fees for you, he will not buy food for you, you can have your tribes men in statehouse, but he will not visit statehouse , your status will never change and you will remain poor, but you will just be proud to say I now have tribesmen in statehouse, so what will it benefit you and your family,” Mr Chama said

And the PF SG has urged all political parties to tone down on hate speech which has the potential to destabilize the country.

Mr Chama has also reaffirmed that in the New Year, it is imperative that everyone embraces and preaches peace and messages that will unite Zambia as opposed to divisive statements at the expense of national development.

‘Now we are in a new year, we don’t want this blame game to continue, we are saying please let’s preach peace, let’s peace decency in politics, let’s be mindful of words we use, let’s be mindful of the language that we use in politics so that we continue to be united party, united country, you know Zambia through one Zambia one nation motto that was promoted by Dr. Kaunda, and we give you Dr. Kaunda a massive credit because now you cannot tell by a name what tribe somebody is, in my house for instance, I have a lot of Bandas, my nephews but there are Chishingas because on my mother’s side am a Chishinga although we are called Bembas, am not a Bemba, am a Chishinga, from Luapula province. In Luapula province you don’t find Bembas, Bembas you only find them in Kasama, in Mungwi District, that is where you find Bembas, you see I have a Muliyokela in my house,, my nephew muliyokela,” Chama said
