DJ Roxy to co-host Lake of Stars

4

DJ-ROXY

DJ Roxy is set to co-host this year’s Lake of Stars Festival in Malawi’s lakeshore town of Mangochi, which is expected to have 95 acts on three stages across three days from today until Sunday.
First secretary for press at the Zambian High Commission in Malawi, Chansa Kabwela, confirmed in a statement that DJ Roxy (Chanda Kangwa), who hosts a programme with Luchi on Radio Phoenix dubbed ‘Breakfast with Luchi and Roxy’, will be at one of the most renowned festivals in Southern Africa.
“The Zambian High Commission in Malawi is pleased to have played a facilitative role in this engagement to ensure that the immense skills and talent that Zambians have shared and exposed on the international stage,” the statement reads.
“The Zambia High Commission remains committed to strengthening relations between Zambia and Malawi as well as promoting the creation of business linkages and partnerships among the people in the two countries.
“The mission is optimistic that many other Zambians will in future have an opportunity to participate and showcase the country’s rich art and culture through DJ Roxy’s involvement in the Lake of Stars international music festival this year.”
The Lake of Stars, now in its 11th year, promotes Malawian arts and tourism through international interaction and exposure. They organise festivals on the shores of Lake Malawi and run events in Europe and across Africa.
It was set up by Will Jameson in 2003 to encourage international tourism to Malawi, taking inspiration from events like WOMAD and Glastonbury.  The project uses cultural tourism to generate revenue and exposure for Malawi.
The project was born from a desire to raise money for a developing economy, help promote Malawi as a tourist destination and expose Malawian artistes to an international audience.
Will Jameson first visited Malawi in 1998 when he worked as a volunteer with the Wildlife Society for six months. During that time, he travelled to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique.
On returning to England, Will took with him a souvenir – an empty carton of Chibuku Shake Shake beer. Half way through university at Liverpool John Moores, he decided to start a clubnight with friends. They named the nightclub after the Malawian beer and went on to win Best UK Club in the Mixmag Awards in 2004.
It was in this same year that he launched the first Lake of Stars Festival, headlined by Chibuku favourite Andy Cato from Groove Armada.
The festival attracted dozens of people from Europe and hundreds attended from all over Malawi and Southern Africa. It won the Malawi Tourism Award in its first year and has grown to become one of the best known African festivals on the global circuit.
International headliners at Lake of Stars events have included Annie Mac, Beverley Knight, Bombay Bicycle Club, Eddy Temple-Morris, Freshlyground, Goldfish, Goldierocks, K’naan, The Maccabees, Mafikizolo, Oliver Mtukudzi and Sauti Sol, among others.
This year’s show is expected to be headlined by the likes of Young Fathers (Scotland), Uhuru (South Africa), Toya Delazy (South Africa), Menes (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Ric Hassani (Nigeria).

PF is making inroads in the strongholds previously held by the opposition-President Lungu

PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has said that the Patriotic Front (PF) is making inroads in the strongholds previously held by the opposition.

Mr Lungu, however, said the results of the Solwezi West and Lubanseshi by-elections were a sign of the growing democracy in Zambia.

Mr Lungu told journalists at New York Palace Hotel yesterday that the PF was not a loser but a winner in the recent two by-elections because it scooped the Lubanseshi seat which was previously held by an independent candidate.

President Lungu said that assertions by opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hichilema of closing up the gap was not correct because the PF got more votes in Solwezi West compared to the past.

“We won. Solwezi West was not our seat. Lubanseshi was not our seat but we won it. So what growth is he talking about unless he doesn’t know arithmetic,” Mr Lungu said.

The President said the PF had made strong and evident inroads in areas held by the opposition, saying in places like Western Province, PF had no seat but it now has some.

Mr Lungu further said the PF’s winning of local government seats in areas such as Mwinilunga, Sichili and Solwezi was a sign that the ruling party was gaining mileage in opposition strongholds.

“We are not the losers but winners,” Mr Lungu said before leaving the hotel to attend the General Assembly session where Pope Francis, who is also in attendance for the first time, addressed the more than 154 heads of State and Government.

Mr Lungu, however, hoped that the experiences that the party had gone through would be treasured for the future so that the democratic process was approached with more commitment to peace.

The Head of State said that there was no need to make violence become part of the country’s democracy.

Meanwhile, President Lungu will highlight to the General Assembly global problems such as climate change and issues affecting women.

Mr Lungu, who has been requested by the United Nations General Assembly to present some of the issues he raised in his speech when he opened Parliament last Friday, said the majority of mankind seemed to lag behind on how women could be treated as equal partners in developing the economy and well-being of people.

“So there are issues as I said which are global and Zambia is also affected. We will interact here and see how we can sort them out,” Mr Lungu said.

Mr Lungu said that Zambia would use the General Assembly to learn from the best practices of the region and global countries on how some of the issues affecting the country could be sorted out.

Acting President Inonge Wina has called for the involvement of adolescents in all programmes and activities that are aimed at promoting sexual and reproductive health among young people.

Speaking when she officiated at the Zambia Adolescent Activism Awards in Health, Mrs. Wina said positive impact in adolescent health can only be scored if government and civil society organisations ensure that adolescent health programmes are teenage driven.

She said the participation of young people in sexual and reproductive health in Zambia resulted in girls having the legitimacy to talk about sex without the risk of being stigmatized as sexually promiscuous among other benefits.

The Acting President said government and other cooperating partners have the responsibility of ensuring that adolescents are empowered with the right information and life skills to allow for a safe transition as well as ensuring a safe and supportive environment in which adolescents survive and thrive in their journey to adulthood.

Mrs. Wina expressed sadness that adolescent girls and young women suffer from negative sexual and reproductive health outcomes which challenge their ability to fulfil their own potential and contribute to their communities’ and country’s development.

She disclosed that adolescents, especially those in rural areas face many social and economic barriers in accessing sexual and reproductive health information and services despite most of them being sexually active.

Mrs. Wina said this has led to high HIV incidences, maternal mortality as well as high cases of early marriages among adolescents including complications such as fistula.

She said addressing adolescent health matters was a huge task that government alone cannot manage to address hence the need to involve other cooperating partners who she thanked for supplementing government’s efforts in promoting adolescent health.

And speaking earlier United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Resident Coordinator Mary Otieno said adolescents need to understand their right in order for them to demand the provision of services such as quality education and health.

Dr. Otieno said government and other partners should take up the burden of providing information, skills and jobs to young people to protect them from early pregnancies and other sexual related risks.

She said taking care of the economic and social needs of adolescents will accelerate their development.

Meanwhile, Pride Community Health Organisation won the best adolescent activism award in the group category and bagged US$1,000 while Abraham Ngulube of Mbala pocketed US$500 in the individual category.

0

Chieftains Kawaza of the Chewa people in Katete district has warned traders in the area against exploiting consumers.

Speaking yesterday when she received a team from the Consumer Competition Protection Commission (CCPC), chieftainess Kawaza sad it was sad that people in villages have continued to be exploited by traders because of lack of information on rights that protect them.

She said rural areas have continued being used as dump sites for expired goods, a situation that has exposed unsuspecting persons to health risks.

The chieftainess noted that it was common to find shops in rural areas where owners refuse to return, exchange or refund customers once goods leave the shelves.

She added that there was need for government to extend sensitisation on consumer rights to rural areas.

She has since warned that she will not spare anyone in her chiefdom who will be found selling expired goods or abusing consumers.

And Consumer Competition Protection Commission (CCPC) Chief Investigator Moses Musantu said the commission has realised the danger consumers have been exposed to.

Mr. Musantu said because of this, the commission has embarked on a vigorous sensitisation programme in Eastern province where it is meeting chiefs and their subjects to educate them on their rights as consumers.

He said the commission felt that consumers, mostly in rural areas, are abused by business persons who have taken advantage of the little understanding that people have concerning their rights as consumers.

Mr. Musantu said the commission as a toll free number 5678 which members of the public can use to report any abuse by traders.

Meanwhile, Headman Kwelewere of chief Kathumba’s area has urged the commission to form neighbourhood watch groups that will help monitor traders in rural areas.

He however challenged the commission to conduct an inspection in the district noting that many traders were selling expired goods and subjecting consumers to bad practices.

Angela Nyirenda happy with her ‘Salary’

8

Angela-Nyirenda

Angela Nyirenda, who will be launching her fourth studio album Salary since her debut Malo Abwino on October 2 at the New Government Complex in Lusaka, is happy to be back to making music after a seven-year hiatus.
“As some of you may know, it has been seven years since my previous studio album project, Zambian Girls. In that period, I have had to take time out of the studio, firstly, because of motherhood. You may also be aware that my baby, Bongani was born with a cardio problem, which eventually took his young life,” she said at a briefing at Manda Hill in Lusaka.
“I take this opportunity to thank the people of Zambia here and abroad, who have held my hand through this grieving process. I thank God for the support that I have received from you, I thank God for the strength he has given me, I thank God for Bongani’s life, and I thank God for giving me the chance to come back to making music.
I would also like to thank my fans for their patience. I know that seven years in-between albums is a long time. I hope my fans will understand the circumstances, and I pray that they continue to support the music.
The traditional music of Zambia is the foundation of Makewane Music. We take the music that is flowing through our rich history and package it with professional and modern methods.”
Angela’s Salary album has 12 songs; Foni Na Nkholoko, Nabwinga, Salary, Achoseko Maganizo, Mwanalume Wangu, Zapakisha, Mwanisebanyisha, Nsongwalume, Nsongwe, Dondolo Sela, Mend Heart and Kabumba.
The title-track, composed by Moses Sakala, is about a wife admonishing her husband not to rely only on his salary while the first track Foni Na Nkholoko, also by Moses but whose chorus is traditional, is about a woman brushing away all advice about her husband’s infidelity.
Mend a Heart, another composition by Moses, is in loving memory of Bongani while Kabumba, composed by Kachasa Mulenga, is a Bemba gospel song praising the creator’s omnipotence and praying for his protection.
Angela has three compositions; Mwanisebanyisha, Mwanalume Wangu and Achoseko Maganizo. In their respective order. they talk about a young lady who is being courted by a man and believes in their relationship; celebrates the power of love and forgiveness; and the pain, frustrations and loneliness of a wife who does not receive affection and attention from her husband.
