Chawama Catholic Church Priest Calls Out Deceitful Politicians and Urges Realism

21

Lusaka’s Chawama Catholic Church Parish Priest Fr. Anthony Kapambwe Salangeta has said sometimes politicians can be deceitful and detached from reality.

Fr. Salangeta said people on the ground are interested in issues that directly affect them as opposed to rhetoric by politicians.

In his homily during Mass attended by former President Edgar Lungu and several Patriotic Front (PF) officials, Fr. Salangeta said people should tell politicians to be realistic.

He said politicians should not behave like Men of Galilee, who stood looking into heaven when Jesus had ascended into heaven.

In his sermon, Fr. Salangeta preached on many issues that include preparing a succession plan, delegation of responsibilities and the need to move on after disappointments in life.

Before he started preaching, Fr. Salangeta had recognised and welcomed Mr. Lungu and his entourage to Chawama Catholic Church.

The Priest told Mr. Lungu that he was welcome to Chawama Catholic Church at any time.

“I would like to recognise the presence of the former President, His Excellence Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, abanensu ba lyonse aiini? Mwaiseni mukwai ne bumba lyenu lyonse. Twamipokelela kuno ku Chawama, kuti mwaisafye epo mulefwaila. Ifya kumfwa umfwa kulabakofye ifyo.Today we are celebrating the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, Jesus goes back to his Father. This is day number 40 after we celebrated the Feast of Easter. We celebrate events that happened in one day as we commemorate Easter, Ascension and Pentecost. These feasts are separated to help us understand very well. It is like a lesson in a classroom. The Church want us to learn what happened on Easter until 40 days that is when we celebrated Ascension and the coming week we will be celebrating Pentecost the descending of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Jesus Christ. This is another event that occurred on Easter. We are saying these events occurred on the same day,” Fr. Salangeta.

“We need move in life. We need to move bamunyinane. If we are not progressing in life it means we are not doing anything. Sometimes these politicians are full of lies. Sometimes ababene ba politician babufi ilingi aba. Baliba mu mulu aii? Mukasanga ifwe tatwaishiba nafilya balanda ati GDP (Gross Domestic Product), balelemba na ba graph. Millennium Development Goals, Zambia will reach SAP (Structural Adjustment Programme) shani…Zambia ya reaching’a ama SAP yanga. Nanomba ma graph, kwa Misisi graph? Kwa Misisi lutoshi lwa bwali aii. Kwa Misisi kuti afyumfwa, kwa Jack lutoshi lwa bwali luli pa table alelya umuntu. E kwisa panshi not iyoo graph. No no. Ngataukwete ubwali, ubunga mu Zambia ninshi tapali efyo uli aii? So mulebeba ababene,” he said.

Fr. Salangeta indirectly made reference to President Hakainde Hichilema’s use of digital graphs to explain Zambia’s economy.

During last week’s press conference in Lusaka, President Hichilema used a graph to show growth trends in real Gross Domestic Product from 1973 to 2023.

Meanwhile, Fr. Salangeta at the end of Mass told Mr. Lungu that losing elections was not the end of life.

He said there was a lot Mr. Lungu could do after losing elections.

Fr. Salangeta said the Sixth Republican President should continue interacting with others.

“Once again we want to thank our visitors, continue with the same spirit. Losing (elections) is not dying. There is more to life in the World. People are not supposed to just stay home like in cage. We are human beings, we are social beings, we have to associate with others. They have come to worship, to interact with others. Thank you Mr. President, today I won’t call you to deliver some remarks. I am avoiding to hear Edgar this. Thank you so much. God bless you,” he said.

Africans Are Dead To Their Wealth!

0

By Prince Bill M. Kaping’a Political/Social Analyst

At the height of the Patriotic Front (PF) sweep to power back in 2011, I found myself in the thriving Bulangililo township in the company of hardcore cadres desperately trying to ‘entice’ me to join PF so that I stopped “writing negative things about their beloved leader.” We were in the area to devour the mouth-watering goat meat the place is renowned for. A number of people were already milling around waiting to have their own fair share of the succulent dish.

“How come our order is taking long to be ready!” one of them snapped. “And you call yourselves investors…..”

“Sata is coming soon to sort out all this nonsense!” another one added, rather brusquely. “You can’t come all the way from West Africa to cook goat meat!”

I immediately took keen interest in the tall, gaunt bearded old man in the fading robes turning around generous portions of meat on the barbecue stand. Was it necessary to keep harassing or berating the man. I couldn’t stomach it any longer! I reminded the rascals that whereas we seem to be intent on pursuing white collar jobs and making fast money at the Black mountain or indeed as suppliers to the mines, our friends have no qualms getting dirty to generate income.

“Look at the goat he’s cooking for instance …..did he come with it from West Africa?” I challenged them. “What about the charcoal he’s using……did it come from outside the country? Negative! While you seem to be comfortable in white shirts and jeans while posing around in fancy cars; apparently, our friends have no problem making forays into the bush to secure materials to work with.”

This brings me to our so-called investors we have around. What do they possess that we don’t? Simply, tenacity and willingness to endure pain and suffering in the most severe environment!

Not so long ago, some of them came in laden with nothing but wheelbarrows, shovels and picks and settled amongst the villagers in the most of unlikely places. They wasted no time working the soil to either produce food, timber or unearthing the minerals God hid there. As we keep on languishing not sure where our next meal will come from; today, they are multi-millionaires laughing all the way to the Bank to remit money abroad!

Apart from this, we have another group that choose to stick around the city and rent or construct makeshift facilities. These are now stocking groceries from our very own Trade Kings or ZAMBEEF and we now have to queue-up and buy from them while we still have to frequent their restaurants to eat our own food at great cost for our pockets. As though this isn’t enough, the beds we sleep on and the chairs we use are crafted from our timber.

Africa is endowed with enormous natural resources and yet we still remain stuck in absolute poverty, not because our Almighty God created us inferior or less intelligent. The reason is simple! Most of those who have offered themselves as our leaders in the past be it as presidents, members of parliament or councilors have either been greedy or selfish, let alone devoid of vision and the inspiration to motivate our people to work their socks off!

Lately, some amongst have observed that there’s too much rhetoric coming from this president as opposed to action. They are dead wrong!

This country deserves a leader who is not only going to constantly remind us of our abundant resources, but equally motivate us and whip us out of our comfort zones so that for a change, we can start thinking of unlocking our wealth which is buried in the goldfields of Kasenseli, Mpika and Lundazi; begin populating the vast plains of Barotse and Lungevungu with cattle; embark on restocking our rivers with different species of fish; consider unearthing the rare Sugilite mineral in Luapula and of course, take keen interest in utilizing our fertile soils in different parts of country to produce enormous tons of maize so that we don’t have to dodge the police exporting the commodity to Congo DR under the cover of darkness!

USA Investment in Lobito Corridor Rail Line is a Positive Game Changer – Tayali

17

The United States of America’s investment in the Lobito Corridor rail line has been hailed as a significant development by Hon. Museba Frank Tayali, the Minister of Transport and Logistics in Zambia. The announcement was made by President Joe Biden during the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) Meeting held in Hiroshima, Japan.

President Biden revealed that the United States has already mobilized over $30 billion in investments and is committed to furthering its efforts. This declaration has been welcomed by the Zambian government, particularly the New Dawn Administration, as it aligns with their vision of unlocking the region’s business potential and stimulating economic growth through private sector involvement.

Hon. Tayali expressed his satisfaction with President Biden’s remarks, emphasizing that they demonstrate the high level of importance and confidence the G7 and its member states place in the Lobito Corridor. He believes that this investment will have far-reaching positive impacts across multiple sectors in the region.

President Biden outlined the United States’ plans to support the development of the Lobito Corridor through an initial investment in a rail expansion project. This railway is set to become the primary open-access transportation infrastructure connecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Zambia to global markets via Angola. The President also mentioned the PGII’s pursuit of additional opportunities to connect the initial Lobito Corridor investments to Tanzania and ultimately the Indian Ocean.

Describing the railway project, President Biden stated, “The rail line would extend from the western shores of Angola to the border of the DRC and Zambia, with the goal of ultimately reaching the Indian Ocean, connecting the continent east to west for the first time.” He emphasized the project’s potential to facilitate trade, create jobs, strengthen supply chains, incentivize investments in agriculture, promote food security, and enable access to clean energy and digital connectivity.

President Biden stressed the importance of investing in key economic corridors, highlighting their potential to provide long-term dividends. As part of the initial investments, the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) is conducting due diligence for a potential financing package of $250 million to finance the Lobito Atlantic Railway Corridor. This marks the DFC’s first investment in rail infrastructure on the continent and is expected to pave the way for increased trading and economic activity between Angola and the DRC, while also promoting investments in agriculture, digital infrastructure, and expanded access to electricity.

The Zambian government and stakeholders in the region are optimistic about the transformative impact of the USA’s investment in the Lobito Corridor rail line. The project has the potential to spur economic growth, improve regional connectivity, and create opportunities for generations to come. With the support of international partners like the United States, the Lobito Corridor is poised to become a crucial trade route, connecting the African continent from east to west and opening doors for enhanced cooperation and development.

Zambia National Women’s Lobby Condemns Personal Attacks on Kitwe Mayor, Calls for Respect in Politics

15

The Zambia National Women’s Lobby (ZNWL) has expressed their disappointment over the personal attacks directed towards Kitwe Mayor, Ms. Mwaya Mpasa. The ZNWL referred specifically to comments made by Mr. Warren Hinyama, the United Party for National Development (UPND) Copperbelt Youth Chairperson.

According to reports, Mr. Hinyama told Ms. Mpasa to find a husband in order to change her behavior and cease frustrating the current government. The ZNWL criticized Mr. Hinyama’s comments as a form of character assassination, particularly highlighting that the party he represents claims to denounce any form of violence, whether physical or verbal.

The ZNWL called on Mr. Hinyama to focus his political discussions and debates on political matters alone and to refrain from extending personal attacks into Ms. Mpasa’s personal life. They emphasized that politics based on character assassination and violence, particularly targeting women, have no place in the country. Such actions only serve to hinder democracy by limiting women’s participation in governance processes.

The organization urged political leaders to discourage all forms of violence, whether verbal or physical, and instead promote tolerance of diverse opinions and the constructive resolution of disputes. They emphasized that both the Anti-GBV Act (2011) and the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act (2021) clearly address online and physical violence. Sections 65 and 69 of the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act explicitly criminalize hate speech, cyberbullying, and harassment. Perpetrators of such crimes can face prosecution and imprisonment if found guilty.

ZNWL expressed solidarity with all women in politics who are facing both online and physical violence. They encouraged these women to utilize the available legal avenues to seek redress for any injustices they face.

The press statement was signed by Ms. Daisy Nhkata Ng’ambi, the National Chairperson of ZNWL, who reiterated the organization’s commitment to promoting women’s rights and combating violence against women in politics.

The personal attacks on Kitwe Mayor Ms. Mwaya Mpasa have sparked a wider conversation about the treatment of women in politics and the need for greater gender equality and respect within political discourse. As the ZNWL continues to advocate for women’s rights and equality, it is hoped that political leaders and society as a whole will recognize the importance of respectful and inclusive political engagement.

Lusaka Mayor Chitangala Condemns Sexist Insult Directed at Kitwe Mayor, Calls for Support of Women in Politics

10

Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala has issued a strong statement in defense of Kitwe Mayor Mpasa Mwaya after the latter faced a sexist insult from a UPND cadre. The comment, suggesting that Mayor Mwaya should find a husband to improve her behavior, has been widely criticized as inappropriate and offensive.

Mayor Chitangala expressed her dismay at the comment, highlighting the lack of relevance between marital status and the ability to deliver on developmental goals. She called out the author of the comment for their ignorance, overzealousness, and immaturity, especially in the context of politics. The Lusaka Mayor expressed concern about such behavior from high-ranking leaders in the province, emphasizing the need to dismantle patriarchy in society.

In her statement, Mayor Chitangala questioned whether those who made such insulting remarks would accept similar treatment toward their own daughters and sisters in the future. She urged all well-meaning Zambians to focus their energy on developmental issues rather than engaging in pettiness.

The Lusaka Mayor extended her advice to the author and encouraged fellow women to rise above intimidation and contribute fully to improving the lives of people in their communities. She stressed the importance of supporting and respecting women in politics and decision-making positions, and called on women to resist being deterred by the behavior of ill-mannered individuals.

Mayor Chitangala expressed disappointment in the current state of women’s movements, stating that they should not be partisan. She urged women’s movements to rise and speak against such behavior, emphasizing the declining numbers of women in politics and decision-making positions. She called for unity in working towards a society where women are given the space, respect, and opportunities they rightfully deserve.

National Dialogue Held in Zambia to Combat Child Marriages: A Step Towards Ending the Cycle of Poverty

A national dialogue between the Parliamentary caucus on children (PPC) and the House of Chiefs has been held in Lusaka with the aim of ending child marriages in Zambia.

Finance Minister Dr Situmbeko Musokotwane, Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti, House of chiefs Chairperson Chief Chisunka and chairperson of the Parliamentary caucus on children Joseph Munsanje attended the national dialogue.

Dr. Musokotwane read the keynote speech on behalf of President Hakainde Hichilema which highlighted that child marriages remains a big social and developmental challenge.

He said child marriages have long term consequences such as denying children the opportunity to acquire academic and life skills to liberate themselves and their families from the inter-generational cycle of poverty.

“As you are all aware, child marriages and teenage pregnancies remain a social and developmental challenge that have a life-long impact on children particularly the Girl child. The vice has long term consequences such as denying children the opportunity to acquire academic and life skills to liberate themselves and their families from the inter-generational cycle of poverty. You may wish to note that ending child marriages is among the top priorities for my government, as it will ensure our young people’s equitable participation in the development of this country. I, therefore, would like to pledge my Government’s total support towards the fight against this worrying vice in our country. It is a great honour for me to be invited to grace the official opening of the national dialogue between the Parliamentary caucus on children and the house of chiefs on child, early and forced marriages,” President Hichilema said.

“Meeting very important. As you may wish to note that ending child marriages is among the top priorities for my government, as it will ensure our
Young people’s equitable participation in the development of this country. I, therefore, would like to pledge my Government’s total support towards the fight against this worrying vice in our country the vision of my government on child development and child welfare is “a society where children survive, thrive and reach their full potential.” therefore, my Government will, by all means, strive to create an enabling environment that protects and promotes the rights and obligations of children and foster their participation in the governance system,” he stated.

The Head of State said the New Dawn Government’s commitment to the development and welfare of children is demonstrated by the speed at which it actualised the legal framework for children was assented to.

“This is the children’s code Act no. 12 of 2022. As you may be aware, this act does not only realise Zambia’s obligations under international and regional children’s rights instruments, but, is also a comprehensive legislation in the sense that it spells out almost all stakeholders’ duties and responsibilities in realising children’s rights including the parents or guardians and the children. As the African Union champion on ending child marriages, I have used this privilege to fight the vice beyond Zambia’s am, therefore, delighted that the parliamentary caucus on children has come up with such a great initiative of having a dialogue with the house of chiefs on ending child marriages,” he said.

President Hichilema urged stakeholders to work together in order to ensure that child marriage is brought under control in Zambia.

“Traditional leaders continue to play a key role in averting the practice by raising awareness among their subjects on the consequences of child marriages. I am, therefore, very optimistic that the dialogue between these two very important institutions will result in meaningful resolutions that will help supplement government’s efforts in ending child marriage. Child development and child welfare cuts across all sectors. Therefore, let me call upon all duty bearers including chiefdoms, united nations agencies, civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, faith and community based organisations, as well as the private sector, to work together in order to ensure that child marriage is brought under control in Zambia,” he said.

Traditional Leader Applauds Government for Motivating Farmers with Higher Maize Price

6

Chief Sandwe of the Nsenga Speaking people of Lusangazi district in Eastern Province has praised Government for increasing the white maize buying price to K 280.00 per 50 Kilogram bag in the 2023 crop marketing season from the previous price of K180.00.

The Traditional leader told the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS in a telephone interview today that this year’s maize price was excellent and a motivation to most farmers.

The traditional leader however called on the government to be advising farmers in advance which crop to focus on during cultivation which would be bought by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to avoid a situation where farmers focused on a crop that would not be bought.

Chief Sandwe said it was because of the current situation where FRA was not going to buy Soya beans this season when most farmers in his Chiefdom had produced enough of the commodity but had no stable market for it.

He noted that the idea of FRA not to buy Soya beans this season would advantage the briefcase buyers to buy the produce at a very low price, adding that it was better if the agency announced the price for Soya beans despite not buying it.

“The price for maize for this year is excellent and motivating to our farmers but the idea of FRA not announcing the price of soya beans and not buying it this year is demotivating because the briefcase buyers will take advantage of the situation and buy Soya beans at a very low price.

I think the Government must be advising farmers in advance on which crops to focus on to avoid such situations,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Martin Mbewe, a farmer from Village 42 in Riverside area of Lusangazi district called on the government to consider finding an alternative market for Soya beans with a good price.

“The challenge is that most farmers have harvested plenty of Soya beans of which FRA said it will not buy and so, my appeal is that the government should find us another market for Soya beans,’’ he said.

Another farmer, Sarah Phiri, from Village 65 in Ukwimi area explained that a lot of farmers who grew soya beans had plans that after selling the produce, they would use part of the money to buy maize for consumption.

“We had to grow enough Soya beans last rainy season because we had plans to sell it at a good price and buy maize. So, the government must consider our cry,’’ she said.

Liya Mwanza another farmer from Village 62 said she was happy with the K 280-00 per 50 Kilogram bag of maize, adding that, the price of Soya beans must also improve further if farmers were to realize the much-needed profit from their hard earned labour.

Ms Mwanza said most of the maize harvested this year was not promising in the area due to calamities such as floods and farmers relied on Soya beans to give them enough money after selling the crop.

“The price of maize is just okay but the maize from farmers this season is not enough because we had floods and fields were swept away. Our only hope was to sell the Soya beans which performed well so that the money can assist us in buying more maize and other stufF,’’ she said.

The Food Reserve Agency announced the 2023 buying price for two crops produced which are white maize at K 280-00 per 50 Kilogram bag and paddy rice at K 200-00 per 40 Kilogram bag.

Wemba still on song as Jerling bags Peugeot

By BENEDICT TEMBO

South African golfer Luke Jerling has won a Peugeot after shooting a hole-in-one at the on going Zanaco Masters Golf tournament at the Lusaka Golf Club.
Meanwhile, Zambia’s pride at the Zanaco tournament Sydney Wemba has remained on course towards a decent finish after pulling six under par on Saturday.
The score was a marked improvement from the three under par on Friday.
Wemba shot two under par in the front nine but had two drops in the back nine for one eagle and two birdies to get three under par, which pushed him to six under par.
“This week my performance has been amazing. My scores have been consistent. I have not had one over par over three days. My bad score was level par,” Wemba said.
He expects to continue scoring five under going upwards on the final day of the 72 holes tournament on Sunday.
“I am praying to God to give me a good round and put my country Zambia on the map,” Wemba said.
Jerling hammered a hole in one on number six to win himself the 2008 Peugeot worth US$47,500 staked by Hazida and Motors and Insurance Partner.
And Wemba, who should have been at nine over par had he not dropped three on Friday, is up against formidable opponents ahead of the tournament closing on Sunday.
English man David Winks is leading the pack on 15 under par followed by South African Shaun Bradley with 14 under par while Robson Chinhoi is third at 13 under par.
The K2.2 million rich tournament enters the final leg on Sunday when the winner will be decided.

The Lion Attack

2

By Mwizenge S. Tembo, Ph. D. Emeritus Professor of Sociology

Zibalwe was a sprawling village of 500 people on the banks of the Lundazi River in the Eastern Province of Zambia in Southern Africa. Hundreds of villages at the time were located in the middle of the African savannah wilderness amidst wild animals such as Thomson gazelles, mbabala or elands, impalas, lions, leopards, elephants, hyenas, cape buffaloes and many more. Prides of lions frequently roamed and migrated from the Luangwa Valley over the plateau to Malawi. Zibalwe Village was located in the lion migrated zone.

One early evening, Headman Zibalwe addressed all the village residents. Lions were in the area and had already attacked and killed cattle in neighboring villages. He told everyone that they should not venture out at night for any reason and to stay in their huts. He explained that the lion modus operandi (m.o) was to for one lion to harass one hut household and they then attack anyone who comes out of their huts to help the potential victim. The Headman emphasized that that’s how lions hunt in the wild. Everyone went to bed securely bolting the hut doors the best they could.

In the middle of the night, a woman everyone in the village knew was a widow began to scream for help.

“Help!!! A lion is bashing at my door!!! Please help me!!!!”

No one was coming out as the woman continued to scream. Headman Zibalwe could not stand it anymore. He grabbed his muzzle loader and carefully emerged out of his hut. He stood on the edge of his hut chiwundo corridor to load his gun as his eyes were adjusting to the pitch darkness of the night. Suddenly a lion pounced on him violently grabbing his upper thigh and lower abdomen. He yelled for help. Knowing the headman’s voice all the men rushed out of their huts armed with spears hollering as the lion was trying to drag him into the bush. The lion was scared off escaping into the bush, dropping him.

The men carried the wounded Headman Zibalwe on a tree branch made stretcher 21 miles to the small hospital in Lundazi where he died. His wounds were fatal. A lion mauled Headman Zibalwe Tembo to death in 1942. Legend has it that all the men of the village hunted the lion that had mauled him until they killed it. It was believed that once a lion had tasted human flesh, it ate nothing else as human flesh has salt. It is believed this is how humans as a group survived lion attacks for over 150,000 years of evolution.

Lions are attacking 330 million Americans today in form of gun deaths from mass shootings, suicides and other gun related-deaths. There are a total of 433.9 millions guns in America. There are 120.5 guns for every 100,000 residents. There are 81 million gun owners of 330 million Americans. The next country is the small country of Yemen which has a per capita of 52.8 guns per 100,000 people.

In 2021, 48,830 people died from gun injuries. There have been over 200 mass shootings so far this year. If you are already yawning at this with your standard about a dozen responses, may be that is just the problem; everyone needs guns for self-defense against violent criminals, mental illness, the second amendment, it is the fault of Democrats or Republicans, violent gun crimes in urban democrat controlled cities especially in black South Chicago, guns don’t kill people it is people who use guns that kill people, violent gun videos and movies have nothing to do with mass shootings and gun violence, we can’t have any gun control because of the slippery slope, etc. etc. None of these justification will solve or reduce the epidemic. America has faced existential threats. One of them was the Second World war during which the country led the allies to defeat NAZI Germany and Japan. Americans realized the existential threat to the nation and acted in unison to defeat the threat in spite of internal social divisions.

If all the 330 million Americans do not come out of their huts in the middle of the dark night as the lion that is gun violence is attacking many of our fellow citizens, many Americans will continue to tragically needlessly die. The residents of the Zibalwe Village could have responded by saying someone else was going to chase the lion or they could have employed a dozen excuses not to act.

This means that gun manufacturers, the National Rifle Association (NRA), Republicans, Democrats, Maga members, all citizens must unite to defeat the epidemic of gun violence. Gun violence does not discriminate. We are all either gun victims today or tomorrow.

Lusambo Warns of Massive Protests if Mining Challenges Remain Unresolved

13

Former Kabushi Member of Parliament, Bowman Lusambo, has issued a stern warning to the Zambian government, stating that if the challenges surrounding operations at Mopani and Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) are not resolved by June this year, the people in the affected region will organize massive protests against the government. Lusambo expressed his concern over the lack of progress in addressing the issues faced by these mines, wondering where the solutions promised by President Hichilema during his time in opposition have gone.

Lusambo highlighted the significant suffering endured by the people in the region due to the non-operation of Mopani and KCM. He emphasized that this dire situation has led to growing discontent among the locals, a sentiment he discovered through his interactions with the affected community.

In addition to his warning, Lusambo announced that he intends to instruct his lawyers to appeal for the removal of certain benefits granted to the president from the constitution, deeming them overly restrictive. This move suggests his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs and his determination to address perceived imbalances.

Furthermore, Lusambo called on President Hichilema to appoint former President Edgar Lungu as a special envoy to China, aiming to restore the strained relations between the two nations. Lusambo argued that despite the government’s reluctance to admit it, Zambia’s relations with China have deteriorated since the Patriotic Front (PF) regime. By suggesting Lungu as a capable envoy, Lusambo believes that his predecessor’s experience and previous interactions with China make him the most suitable candidate for this crucial role.

The former Kabushi MP stressed the urgency of reestablishing strong ties with China, emphasizing its significance in addressing Zambia’s current debt restructuring efforts. Lusambo expressed concerns that without a special envoy, President Hichilema’s visit to China might not be taken seriously, especially given his previous visits to Western countries.

Additionally, Lusambo highlighted the importance of prioritizing governance over politics for the benefit of the majority of Zambians. He suggested that President Hichilema can learn from the governance practices of former President Edgar Lungu, who had significant experience in government before assuming the presidency.

Indian Pharmaceutical Companies Show Interest in Setting up Manufacturing Plants in Zambia

9

The Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency (ZAMMSA) has welcomed the interest expressed by globally renowned Indian pharmaceutical companies in establishing manufacturing plants in Zambia. This development could be a significant step towards addressing drug shortages in the country on both short and long-term bases. A team comprising Members of Parliament from the Parliamentary Committee on Health, ZAMMSA, and the Ministry of Health recently visited India to witness the packing of the first consignment of health center kits and engage with major producers and suppliers of drugs.

During their visit, the team held meetings with three prominent Indian companies: Torrent Group, Pathkits, and Akums Healthcare Limited. ZAMMSA Director General Billy Mweetwa expressed satisfaction with the discussions, stating that the companies’ interest aligns with the government’s agenda of localizing production for essential medicines. In addition to addressing immediate supply concerns, this collaboration has the potential to bring jobs into the Zambian economy and broaden the revenue base, contributing to the country’s long-term resilience.

“The impression we got is that they are willing to work with us to establish a base in Zambia and beyond, which is a big thing for us because this is aligned to the national agenda of building resilience in the supply chain through localizing the production of these essential medicines,” said Mr. Mweetwa.

Zambia’s Acting High Commissioner to India, Mrs. Deliwe Mumbi, welcomed the delegation and highlighted the challenges faced by the mission, including the need to establish a facility in Zambia with the help of one of India’s multispecialty hospitals. Mrs. Mumbi expressed gratitude for the opening of the Office of the Counsellor (Health), which has facilitated engagement with health institutions in India.

The establishment of manufacturing plants by these Indian pharmaceutical companies in Zambia has the potential to significantly address the country’s drug shortage. The presence of a dedicated health office within the High Commission in India has played a crucial role in fostering meaningful engagements with health institutions. Counsellor (Health), Professor Victor Mukonka, acknowledged the positive impact of Vice President Mrs. Mutale Nalumango’s previous visit to India and her engagements with pharmaceutical companies and hospitals.

“We are determined to facilitate whatever efforts are being done by our leadership back in Zambia through the Ministry of Health,” stated Prof. Mukonka.

This initiative to attract Indian pharmaceutical companies not only ensures a sustained, regular, and predictable supply of drugs but also positions Zambia as a hub for the whole Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. By establishing manufacturing industries, these companies can not only serve Zambia’s needs but also become a channel for supplying essential medicines throughout the region.

The Zambian government’s efforts, in collaboration with Indian pharmaceutical companies, are a significant stride towards resolving the drug shortage issue. The Ministry of Health remains committed to creating an enabling environment for investment and promoting local production of essential medicines.

Youth Alliance Zambia calls for UNZA students to wear manditory uniforms

An urgent appeal has been made to the Dean of Students at the University of Zamia, in conjunction with the Ministry of Higher Education, to introduce obligatory uniforms for all students on the Great East Road Campus. An email written by the Mukuka Kampamba the youth ambassador at the Youth Alliance Zambia stated that this proposal aims to tackle the concerning behavior of female students dressing inappropriately.

Dressing Concerns and Implications:

Mukuka Kampamba claims that approximately 80% of students at the University of Zambia have expressed their genuine complaints regarding the prevalent issue of female students walking around the campus in revealing attire. He said this has become a significant distraction for male students, hindering their ability to focus on their studies. Mukuka said it has been observed that the lack of proper attire, both among male and female students, leads to social jealousy, which further impacts the overall academic environment and students’ grades.

Reviving the University’s Reputation:

The Youth ambassador said the decline in the University of Zambia’s ranking as one of the top universities in Africa has raised concerns among stakeholders. In light of this, he proposes the implementation of mandatory uniforms as a potential solution to address the underlying issues affecting the institution’s academic environment. By establishing a dress code policy, the university will create a more conducive atmosphere for learning and foster a sense of unity and equality among the student body.

One Zambia, One Nation, Two Realities?

“How dare he speak ill of the President? Stay in your lane! Aba nabo!” That’s the tone I expect as feedback from this article; largely because the country is incredibly polarised and quite heavily politicised. This is actually quite fair, seeing as most of the country’s leadership is either by politicians or people close to politicians. As a consequence, supporters of said people tend to defend their own, and passionately so.

This will certainly not stop my article. I was fortunate to be one of the people that attended President Hakainde Hichilema’s presser at State House on the 18th of May, 2023. But no, I must add that I have actually attended all of President HH’s (as I like to call him) briefings. I have had the further privilege of being given the chance to ask him some questions, alongside other journalists.

At all his briefings, President HH seems to spend a decent amount of time registering his successes – which like anything else are quite arguable, but he can have that. Dare not ask him about his predecessor! Unfortunately, this incredibly reduces the chance for the press to ask their critical questions as there’s little time, but even if they did, it’s not like the President will give definite answers. With decades of experience, President HH has very solid experience as a politician and this tends to work well for him in evading questions with rather very general responses that for some reason seem to impress his supporters.
While this is the case, it might appear that President HH is living a different reality. It is important to mention that unlike what the President may believe, Zambia is certainly not a utopia, after he assumed office. Quite the contrary if we’re keeping it a hundred (pardon my slang, I’m trying to keep my young friends in the loop – like the President often does).

In examining President HH’s tenure, it is important to acknowledge his achievements while recognizing that they alone are not the solution to Zambia’s challenges. One notable accomplishment is the commendable Napsa 20% partial withdrawal initiative. However, it is crucial to question whether this measure aligns with the President’s perception. Despite this withdrawal option, the majority of Zambians still struggle to afford housing even with their entire NAPSA pension, let alone with a mere 20%.

Meanwhile, as the President and his health minister focus on allegations of drug theft and engage in political battles, the non-functional state of the Cancer Diseases Hospital continues to claim lives. Since mid-last year, the hospital has been without a functioning Linear Accelerator. While the minister of health is occupied defending herself against criticism, people are losing their lives.

An overarching issue lies in the President’s inconsistency. His words often outweigh his actions. Last year, his administration promised to procure new linear accelerators by the year’s end, yet no progress has been made. Similarly, he assured the nation that the issues surrounding KCM would be resolved by the first quarter of 2023, yet the situation remains stagnant.

Mining plays a vital role in Zambia’s economy, and any disruptions in this sector have far-reaching consequences. Despite the President’s promises of a swift resolution to the challenges faced by the mining industry, several months have passed with no tangible progress made.

Furthermore, senior government officials are disregarding media freedoms by giving uninvited interviews, a matter the President has chosen to ignore completely.
While the President believes that the lives of Zambians have significantly improved, it is vital to question this narrative. As a journalist interacting with numerous individuals, their experiences don’t always align with the President’s assertions. It raises the question: Is the President residing in a different reality altogether?

At the first briefing, I raised a crucial question to the President regarding a leaked audio involving two high-ranking officers within his administration. The conversation revealed a plot to undermine the independence of an opposition political party, which has effectively been reduced to insignificance. The President assured that an investigation was underway, but to this day, no progress has been made. It appears that the matter has been conveniently forgotten, perhaps reflecting our collective tendency to have a short memory.

In the beginning of 2022, the President and his government pledged a seamless farming season with timely and sufficient delivery of agricultural inputs. Regrettably, this turned out to be a catastrophic failure. How can the President’s assurances of timely input delivery be trusted now, considering his past bold statement during a BBC interview, where he claimed his choice for the Bank of Zambia governor would astonish citizens, only to ultimately appoint Edgar Lungu’s former candidate?

Speaking of Edgar Lungu, it begs the question: When will President HH move beyond his feud with his predecessor? This ongoing rivalry serves no purpose for the nation and is rather tiresome. It is time for the President to focus on substantive issues and prioritize the needs and aspirations of the Zambian people over personal animosity.

In conclusion, while recognizing the President’s commendable achievements, it is essential to critically evaluate his actions and the realities experienced by the Zambian people.

Unaddressed concerns regarding the leaked audio, mining challenges, failed promises in the agricultural sector, and an incessant feud with his predecessor highlight the need for a more consistent and proactive approach from President HH. Only by confronting these issues head-on and aligning rhetoric with concrete actions can Zambia truly progress and achieve a brighter future for all its citizens.

Mozambican Airline to fly into Lusaka

Mozambican Airline (LAM) will on 30th June 2023 launch its inaugural direct flight between Maputo and Lusaka.

This came to light when a Mozambican airline head of marketing Eunice Adelina Matediane announced the development when she led a delegation that visited the Zambia High Commission in Maputo.

Ms Matediane said the airline will fly to and from Maputo and Lusaka three times a week.

Zambia’s Acting High Commissioner to Mozambique Lloyd Himaambo told ZANIS in a press statement that the development was one of the fruits of President Hqakainde Hichilema’s recent state visit to that country.

Mr. Himaambo explained that, when President Hichilema visited Mozambique in April this year, he instructed that the process of allowing Mozambican Airline to start operating the Lusaka route be expedited.

Ambassador Himaambo explained that it is President Hichilema’s view that countries in the region should intensify trade among themselves before they can even engage overseas partners.

Mr. Himaambo noted the launch of Maputo to Lusaka flights will lead to more trade between Zambia and Mozambiaque.

Presently, there are no direct flights between Lusaka and Maputo and travelers have to connect through Johannesburg or Addis Ababa.

On 8th May 2023, The Zambia Civil Aviation Authority granted Mozambican Airline permission to operate the Lusaka Maputo route
